Shannen Doherty Is 'Open' to Finding Love Again: 'I'm Pretty Sure I'll Meet Somebody — Hopefully Soon' (Exclusive) "I don’t think I’m going to be single forever," the 'Beverly Hills, 90210' actress tells PEOPLE in its latest cover story By Danielle Bacher Published on November 29, 2023 12:52PM EST
At any given chance, Shannen Doherty finds a sense of hope and possibility.
During her PEOPLE cover shoot a few days before Thanksgiving, the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed alum, 52, says she recently realized that she's ready to find love again.
"I was not ready at all before three weeks ago," she admits candidly. "And something happens. There's always a trigger, just a moment that you have, somebody says something to you, your ex says one thing to you and you're like, 'Okay, yeah, I'm good. I'm good.' I have closure and I can move on in a really healthy way."
Asked what that future relationship looks like, Doherty admits she doesn't know.
“I have a best friend, a male best friend who we joke that we're married," she added. "I don’t know if it’s that or if it’s stumbling upon somebody and just feeling an instant connection. I'm open, and I wasn't [before].”
She continues, “I don’t think I’m going to be single forever. I have to love myself and reckon with the past, really, before I can move forward, and now I’m pretty sure I’ll meet somebody — hopefully soon.”
After 11 years of marriage, Doherty split from her third husband Kurt Iswarienko in April. (The couple separated in January and cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason in their divorce filing.)
Although she says she spent a lot of "good years" with him, Doherty — who was previously married to Rick Salomon from 2002 to 2003 and Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994 — is ready to move on from her past.
"Listen, Elizabeth Taylor still has me beat as far as husbands and divorces, so I'm good. I'm not there yet, so there's no reason to be negative about it. S--- happens," she says of her breakup.
The actress has spent the last few years undergoing treatment for Stage 4 breast cancer. She will be discussing her relationships — as well as her career and her cancer journey — in her upcoming live memoir-style podcast, Let's Be Clear with Shannen Doherty, premiering Dec. 6.
From the moment she was diagnosed in 2015, she admits it was terrifying for her. "It was definitely one of those moments where you wonder if you're going to make it at all, but it's also where you learn the most about yourself because you have to really dig deep and gather the strength to face it head on and keep marching forward," she says.
For her, that strength comes from her family and loved ones, and the star says she's also open to the idea of motherhood.
“I would love nothing more than to be a mom," she says. "I always wanted it, and I think if I did it with my best friend or a partner, then I don't know any amount of time..." She pauses a moment, then continues. "I look at kids who don’t have parents at all — any amount of time [with a parent] is better than nothing. I vacillate. I’m biding my time, but in the meantime, I’ve got my brother’s seven kids and my best friend’s kids, who I kind of view as my children.” Although Doherty acknowledges she's suffered some periods of feeling depressed, she remains hopeful for life and love. "Things have not been exactly easy and smooth. They've been really challenging at times, and it's hard to find yourself suddenly single in your 50s, and with Stage 4 cancer. That's a hard one," she admits. "And that was super depressing for a while now, but eventually you turn a corner."
Now Doherty is welcoming what may come with open arms. "I didn't want to jump into anything and not have it all sorted in my head because then I'm no good to another person at that point," she says. "Now I'm ready."

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

My favourite genre of gay people is "They didn't have bdsm sex onscreen but, bdsm elements are always lurking in the corner and haunting the narrative through thinly veiled visual metaphorical implication."

The 'Beverly Hills, 90210' alum is launching ‘Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty,’ which will look back on her life By Danielle Bacher and JP Mangalindan Updated on November 29, 2023 09:24AM EST
Shannen Doherty wants to be upfront about the eventful moments in her life — a life that has largely been lived in the spotlight.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 actress and cancer advocate is launching the podcast Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty on Dec. 6 as a way to “be clear about everything” in her life, Doherty exclusively tells PEOPLE.
The iHeartRadio podcast will cover a wide range of topics, from her decades-long career in Hollywood to her ongoing journey with breast cancer.
“I wanted to be clear about what it was like for me to work with Michael Landon on Little House [on the Prairie], what it was like to work with Wilford Brimley on Our House, to talk about the 90210 days. What was it like to be on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine when you're in your early twenties? Charmed to Heathers and Mallrats,” she explains.
Doherty, who announced her split from her third husband Kurt Iswarienko in April, also plans on discussing the lessons she's learned from her relationships.
“What are the relationships in my life that have really altered and changed me, from my very first serious boyfriend to my multitude of marriages and engagements, to divorces?" she continues.
But the actress also wants to be clear that the podcast will not be a “tell-all,” but rather a “memoir of the past, the present and future.”
“’Tell-all’ sort of sounds weird to me, because I always think of a tell-all is your only intention is basically to blame everybody else and to tell on them,” says Doherty, adding, “I take full responsibility for my own actions, and I hold myself very accountable, and I do it on the podcast as well. I admit to the mistakes that I have made.”
It's her hope that Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty will be an educational resource for cancer patients, their spouses and their family members, which is why she plans on having doctors on the podcast.
“We really explore all the different phases and stages of cancer, what it's like to lose your hair [a] multitude of times, how to stay authentic to yourself while also staying really authentic to the cancer movement,” she says. The actress also plans on interviewing guests that include recognizable names, best friends and loved ones. “My mom — listen, if I could interview my dog, I would — but she’ll probably be there with me at some points,” she muses. “It’s just an eclectic group of people who have meant a lot to me in my life, mixed with doctors … I admire.” Doherty, who continues to stay busy by raising breast cancer awareness through TV appearances, events and social media, as well as joining her Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed castmates at conventions, plans on recording several podcast episodes a day. “When I'm working and when I'm creative, there's no room for depression at all. It fuels me,” she explains. “Working makes me so happy. Even my podcast producers were like, ‘Really? You're going to do three episodes in one day? It's a lot.’ And I was like, ‘I could do five in a day.’ I just go … It's also invigorating. I love it. So that helps me for sure.”
