This is far from my best work, but it's 1:30am, and I needed to get this down before I slept or lost my mind. So here, take a snippet of Rook seeing Zara again for the first time in 3 years.

Trying, and failing, to keep his voice from shaking, [Rook] said “Hello, Captain.” Mouth still open in surprise, [Zara] replied “Well, hello yourself.” The reality of what she was seeing seemed to hit her as she rounded the desk. “Rook, is that really you?” He nodded. “It’s me.” Zara ran towards him, stopping just short of touching him, and said “What did she do to you?” Rook’s heart stuttered and he had to brush his fingers together to confirm Sigmar’s ring was still in place. Could she possibly see through its illusion? But then he remembered what Lanny had said. She knew where you were. His throat clenched and he choked out “Two years.” A wave of grief swept across Zara’s face as she said “I’m so, so sorry.” Rook shook his head vigorously. “It’s not your fault.” Zara ignored him. “It is my fault. I failed you. As your captain, it’s my responsibility to keep you safe, and I failed you.” Rook wanted to say something, to reassure her, but she pushed on. “She sent me letters, told me all the terrible things she was doing to you. I… I let you down.” Those words hit Rook with the force of a dozen cannonballs. Lanny had said that Zara knew Wolf had him, but knowing that Zara had been aware of what Wolf was doing to him… somehow that was more painful than any wound Wolf had ever inflicted. He barely managed to force his next words out around the lump in his throat. “Where were you?” And why didn’t you come? “She said she’d kill you if I came to get you. Or if I hired anyone to get you. You’re standing here because I stopped sailing.”

Oh god not this theory again. I really truly try not to be mean to people for no good reason on this blog, but this theory is literally one of the stupidest fucking things I've ever seen in my entire life. I don't talk about this theory because to me it's like the walten files theory equivalent of that tubby custard mechanically separated chicken post.

Most of the time I genuinely don't even consider it worthy of my time, because it's nonsense, but this is a very nicely worded ask, and I really don't mean to dedicate any of the vitriol I hold towards this theory to You, poor anonymous person, so I will deconstruct it. I will go through the theory point-by-point and deconstruct why I disagree with it.

First up, this:

Showbear is not a character in The Walten Files anymore. Showbear was fully retconned and is never going to appear in the series again. He was effectively just a cameo of ThunderingStatic's (one of Martin's friends) OC, but when The Walten Files blew up and people started assuming Showbear was Martin's character, Static decided to withdraw his character from the series and focus putting him in other projects.

Martin talked about this on Twitter forever ago, but I wouldn't be able to find that tweet now. But here's a bit from the interview he did with KnowYourMeme back in 2021 where he talks about it:

This is just stupid to me? Like a complete logical incongruity? I barely even know how describe what is dumb about this because I can't even fathom how anyone draws this conclusion from this information. How is it strange for a man to say 'if my wife isn't home by the time she said she was going to be, let me know, in case something happened.'????? Why would Rosemary be out cheating on her husband with her fucking daughter with her??? If Rosemary was cheating on her husband why would her whole life collapse when he went missing? Whatever. This is maybe the most coherent part of the theory, to me. I definitely agree that Sha evokes a 'wolf in sheep's clothing' sort of aesthetic, but I do remember Martin saying something in a Twitter Q&A at one point about how that wasn't actually intentional, and that Bon was the character he actually meant to seem unusually predatory. I looked for a while and couldn't find a screenshot of that, but I did find this one where he says the thing about Bon:

yeah Rosemary is asking if she's still beautiful because she cheated on her husband and not because she was chopped up and stuffed inside a big animatronic sheep. I think this is correct and is the True Deep Lore.of the walten files. I'm sure this doesn't have anything to do with the recurring motif of the double-meaning behind the word Beautiful either.

I don't know why it's weird that the lost lingering spirit of a mother would be calling out to her only living child. I Don't know why that needs additional explanation involving this batshit infidelity conspiracy theory.

I guess I can't disprove this except that I think this is dumb. I think this is a really incredibly stupid logical leap to make. Y'know I really meant to go into this levelheadedly and very calmly go through every point and talk about why I think it's Decisively Disagreeable or whatever but I can't. I really can't. I just cannot keep my patience with this sort of thing.

You'd think if there was an infidelity aspect here it would've been lampshaded in some respect, at all, in the old /sophiewalten findjackwalten page text. Where it's literally Sophie talking to Jenny about what she remembers about her family.

Especially if the idea is that Sophie is meant to have been there. You'd think something like that would have come up here. Not 'she was nice and a good mom until my dad disappeared and her mental health started getting worse'

Ok but, Edwyn, the lovesick idiot that he is, attempts to bring Ingja back from the dead. He hoped to return back to Chorrol, with his wife back in his arms, to give Elyse her mother back, but he fucked up. He fucked up bad. He's a brilliant conjurer, and though conjuration has ties to necromancy, he's absolutely terrible at that. He causes major damage as his attempts at spells backfire, people get hurt in the process. He spends a good few years in prison as a result. He kept trying to get in contact with Elyse, to let her know that he fucked up, but his letters never get sent - and when he asks why they haven't, the guards simply shrug him off.

When he is finally released from prison? The only thing he cares about is finding Elyse. He had been so focused on Ingja's death, he had neglected his living daughter who had been grieving just as he had been, and that is what he had quickly realised after being locked up. But when he gets back to Chorrol, there are strangers in his home. Strangers who had lived there for years. All he hears is that Elyse had to sell up, move to Skyrim. So he takes off after her.

And he is so damn confused when he realises that a lot of people in Skyrim seemed to know of Elyse. That she is in Whiterun. He could find her in a place called Dragonsreach. So he goes there.

The first person he speaks to there, of anyone, is Balgruuf. His son-in-law, though he doesn't realise it at the time. He tells him that he's looking for his daughter, and almost gets told to speak to the guards until Balgruuf gets a better look at him - a frazzled and tired and panicked-looking Breton who looked remarkably similar to his wife. And in that exact same moment - a horrified gasp and a quiet whisper of "Dad...?" comes from Elyse, who had just emerged from elsewhere in the palace.

She wasn't happy to see him. And that was like a blade in his heart. His little girl, who he had taught magic to and would listen to him read with eyes filled with curiosity and awe, looked to be in pain in his mere presence. She looked to have seen a ghost. To her, he was a ghost.

So he has no choice but to give her some space. But he lets her know that he isn't going to disappear as he had done again. Unless she wanted him to. He could live with knowing that she was alive, that she had found a place for herself in the world where she felt safe and happy.

He'd dug his metaphorical grave. And he was more than willing to lay in it.
