...I feel like I am the only person who skips actions scenes a lot of the time. I just don't care. If you're not stabbing someone, causing a character to almost die, which is relevant for the plot, I just wanna get on with the story

As much as this Cat Lady missed the point of DE.... I think a Disco Elysium-like that is "about" a young witch searching for her neighbor's lost cat in the Alps could go hard... but only if it's not really about that.

It's about leaving the comfort of a sanitized, idyllic surface level community on what's supposed to be an errand for a friend.

It's about peeling back the veneer of "civilized" society to find the ever-deepening grime of reality underneath, navigating layer upon layer of the most banal, everyday evils and cruelties that make your comfort possible.

It's about the slow, unrelenting loss of ignorance, and with it, innocence, and being irreparably changed by the journey, and deciding who you want to be in the face of it all.

Where Harry DuBois starts Disco Elysium at or near the lowest of lows and has to piece himself together, this little witch is starting whole and soft in the higher heights, and she has so very, very far to fall.

Will she shatter all at once?

Will she chip away, piece by piece, picking up new ones to fit in the gaps?

Will she give up entirely and try to go back to her life of comfort, hoping in vain to reclaim her lost ignorance?

Will the cat still be a cat by the time she finds it?

Will she still be the young witch who went looking for it?

Regardless of how most of these questions are answered, I think that last one will have to be "No."

Otherwise, it wouldn't be much like Disco Elysium.

I hope the "What if Disco Elysium was about a witch finding her cat in the mountains" post never leaves the gaming discourse vernacular. It will never not be funny to me bc it's got all the Gamer Entitlement™ levels of CoD bros throwing hissy fits about "woke" shit but instead of being couched in far right reactionism it's the exact kind of "Kingdom of Conscience" style liberal outrage at anything with conviction and beliefs that DE waxed on about. Like even chuds who get mad that the game calls you out for being racist interact with the themes of DE better and understand them more than Cat Lady did.

yes, doctors suck, but also "the medical ethics and patient interaction training doctors receive reinforces ableism" and "the hyper competitive medical school application process roots out the poor, the disabled, and those who would diversify the field" and "anti-establishment sentiment gets applications rejected and promotions requests denied, weeding out the doctors on our side" and "the gruesome nature of the job and the complete lack of mental health support for medical practitioners breeds apathy towards patients" and "insurance companies often define treatment solely on a cost-analysis basis" and "doctors take on such overwhelming student loan debt they have no choice but to pursue high paying jobs at the expense of their morals" are all also true

none of this absolves doctors of the truly horrendous things they say and do to patients, but it's important to acknowledge that rather than every doctor being coincidentally a bad person, there is something specific about this field and career path that gives rise to such high prevalence of ableist attitudes
