Description: Devon is haunted by the realization that the Joker may still be alive.

Devon’s Abilities: Trained in hand-to-hand combat and is trained to use most weapons

     Everything is fuzzy. The sound. The touch. The taste. My vision starts to focus and I see a figure on the floor made of red, green, yellow, and black. I try to get up but I can’t move, my limbs are strapped down. A taste of metal becomes more evident in my mouth but I swallow it down as I realize I’ve been captured. 

A dark figure with a red head moves. I blink violently trying to tell who this figure is and assess the situation. Laughs and wheezes echo throughout the room. Oh no. Oh god.

The figure removes his helmet, revealing his green hair and pale face. I close my eyes trying to center myself and make a plan. The ropes won’t loosen with my force so I retaliate with screams of anger. 

He laughs and tilts his head; my eyes focus on a crowbar in his hand. He steps closer and I spit out the metallic taste, splattering red on his face. His pale hand wipes it across his face emphasizing his smile. Chuckles escape him as I attempt to release myself again. “Don’t you want to pull a joke on your old man?” He places a hand on my waist.

I resist the shutter that is fighting to release from my body. His ‘jokes’ aren’t quite to my taste. I was there to experience the aftermath of what happened to Babs. 

His cold, dry hands grab my throat firmly. I grit my teeth, trying to stop them from chattering. Two of the chair legs lift from the floor. “You’ll be a part of it either way.”

Strangulation isn’t the best for oxygen circulation. Trying to escape from my binds is of no use. Everything sharp has been taken from my suit and it’s tied so tightly that I can barely feel my hands. Breathing no longer becomes an option and everything is starting to go out of focus again. Black spots appear in my vision.

“HEY!” a new voice erupts. “What type of pussy hurts a girl when she can’t defend herself?” 

The clown’s laughs halt like he’s thinking of a comeback. My head feels like a cloud. He turns, letting me go. The chair slams into the concrete, rocking me back and forth. Coughing erupts as I attempt to breathe again. The Joker walks away from me to the form that’s growing clear to me as the black spots in my vision fade. 

“That isn’t funny…” his voice has grown deep, “… but do you wanna know what is?” His smile grows unnaturally wide. The Joker lifts his crowbar. I scream when I hear a crack.

 “Devon,” Kara’s voice breaks through my thoughts.

“He’s after me,” my voice is firm, too firm. I have to keep myself together. I turn to her.

Her face is full of confusion. “What?” she breathes.

     “I saw him, on a rooftop,” I allow a heavy pause as I gather my thoughts. “The Joker,” I force out.

Clark steps out of his office. His face turns serious as he looks at me then Kara.

     “He was wearing what he wore when he captured Jason and me,” I explain. “I know what I saw.” I wish I didn’t. 

     Clark frowns. “We need to get to the cave and tell them.” He breathes out harshly. “Kara, pick them up.” Before I can say a word wind is blowing in my face. Instinctually I turn into her chest, the feeling of weightlessness makes me nauseous. The sound of the wind echoing tells me we’re almost there and so do the blaring alarms.  

     “What the hell Superman?” Batman growls. He furiously types at the computer trying to silence the alarms. Tim butts in and turns them off. “What was the purpose of that, it takes two seconds to turn that shit off now I have to alert everyone everything is alright. You should know better than to show up una..” 

     “Bruce,” Clark’s voice booms and echoes through the cave. The Kryptonian turns to me, everyone else follows suit.

“He’s back,” I inhale. “The Joker.”

   The energy in the room changes distinctly. It was once full of frustration and maybe even confusion but now… The blood vanishes from my father’s face as he looks to Clark for confirmation. His face hardens. Tim pauses then stops typing entirely and stares at me. Fear is written all over his face.

     Jason’s death was not the last time we had all seen the Joker but Damian has never had the “pleasure” to be face to face with him in the year he’s been Robin. We all thought he was dead. We thought he went out with a bang and laugh, killing several hundred people in the process. Except for Bruce. He was convinced for months that he was still alive. He searched during that time but once Damian came around he stopped.

     “Are you sure?” Damian’s voice pierces, like a spear through the head. Painful, surprisingly quick. 

    The Batman snaps his head around and gives Damian an unapproving look. Damian is still the master at trying to undermine everyone. He questions everyone’s judgment and everyone’s skills, especially mine. Since in his mind I’m the first born.

     Nightwing’s face appears on the screen. His domino eyes are squinting. “Batman, report in, is there a breach?” 

 The bat turns to the screen.“False alarm, Nightwing. Code Green, I need you to come in. I’ll explain everything when you arrive.” Nightwing’s white eyes widen. His mouth opens to say something but instead, he nods and the screen goes black. “Drake, connect to all who were alerted to a breach.”

     Tim nods, presses a few buttons, and looks to Batman. The bat presses his finger to his ear. “Anyone and everyone listening, this is a Code Green. Report immediately on the secure channel, you know where to meet.” He removes his finger from the side of his head and turns, telling Tim to turn off Batman’s comm and listen for responses. “I appreciate you for bringing in Black Bat and keeping them safe but we have work to do.” 

     I never understood, why he was so particular about which heroes operated on Gotham-related missions. He refused their help even when he was looking for The Joker after Jason’s death. The one and only exception he’s ever made was when he arrived at the recently exploded warehouse that Jason died in. But that wasn’t even in Gotham.

     Kara turns to me, putting her hand on my face. I raise my hand to it. “I’ll be ok. I promise,” I smile. We both know I’m lying, nothing about this is going to be ok. “Go. I’ll keep you updated.”

    Her eyebrows tense like when she’s determined to do something but then she breathes out. “Say the word and I’ll be there,” there’s something in her voice that kills me. She gives me a worried look as I remove her hand from my face. Then she peeks around me and makes eye contact with Drake. He’s speaking to Batwoman on comms but nods in response and she nods back like they’ve made a deal. They’ve probably talked about the potential of this situation and the best way to deal with me. Or at the very least Tim promised to keep Kara updated. I hold her hand and kiss her before she lets go and flies away.

     I’ve taken a seat at the kitchen table in the upper part of the cave, just trying to get my thoughts together. I’ve already changed into my suit and am just waiting for the others to arrive. Damian looms in his usual spot not too far from me. The Batman is pacing around trying to come up with a plan. Tim is sitting next to me eating a poptart and drinking his usual coffee. He raises the second pop tart, offering it to me but I decline. I know if I eat it I might as well hover over the trash can waiting for it to return. 

     Damian’s had to have been silently standing there for fifteen minutes. Couldn’t he be a human being for fifteen minutes? He’s just standing and staring at our father waiting for orders. “Damian, I swear to god if you don’t take a seat,” I finally snap.  He glares at me for a moment then walks over. He grabs my chair and pulls it back causing two of the legs to hover for a split second then slam back down. My breath hitches. He then pulls up a chair but before he can even sit down I’m standing and slamming my hands on the table.

     “What the fuck is wrong with you?” I can hear the laughter start to flood my senses but I know it’s not real. I blink hard. Doesn’t he understand what this means? Doesn’t he of all people understand what it’s like to have to live your worst nightmare? I look at Damian and see an all-too-familiar costume. I have to remind myself that I’m in the cave. “I have been nothing but kind and caring towards you and you’re choosing to be a brat when I can’t fucking…” My voice cracks, and I can feel my body start to shake. I put my weight on my prosthetic leg, afraid that I am going to buckle to the floor.  Blood is dripping down Damian’s face. His eyes are dead. I lean on the table for more support, almost as if it’s going to save me from him. Cold hands grasp around my throat and the sound of metal hitting bone and flesh loops in my head.

      A hand is placed on my shoulder. I flinch but the touch is safe and warm. I can feel my hands are on a table and I feel my brother's thumb rubbing my face.

“Dev,” he says. “You need to take a breath.” He grabs one of my hands and puts it on his chest and takes a large breath. I follow his actions and attempt to breathe myself. I’m safe. I’m in the cave, with my brothers. Jason is long dead but the rest of us are safe.

A groan escaped him as she moved against his growing bulge, and before he knew it he'd grabbed her legs, tightly clutching her thighs as he moved them around his waist. "Being a tease could get you in some real trouble, princess. Lucky you have me keeping an eye on you," he spoke, his darkened eyes pinned on hers. Bending his head down, he captured her lips with his own, but couldn't help nipping at them as he did.

DC Pride 2022's 2023 reprint is great.

Surprisingly, and surprising in a good way, it retconned that god awful Superman story by known !ncest shipper, and writer of Nightwing's r@pe, Devon Grayson.

Now, rather than bringing weapons to a Pride parade to 'disperse rioters', Damian Wayne is bringing all those weapons in case he has to protect Pride-goers. This actually fits the character and makes sense for Damian, which isn't surprising considering Devon Grayson wrote the original.

Also got rid of that god awful 'Pride has been a party for decades 🎉🎉' bullshit.

ok, I love that at least one person out there thinks that I am an authority on this topic.

no, there was not one issue that drew his ass so incredibly that it suddenly became iconic. over the years, Dick grew up from being a platonic boy hero to a sexual adult, then sex isol, then bearer of an (at times) voluptuous ass. this video has a good recap!

(sidebar—I need to make a correction to the video, which is a bit of misinformation I see floating around all the time, which is the idea that Devon Grayson did not admit or know that what she wrote in Nightwing #93 was sexual assault. she just didn't call it rape at the time, but said it was nonconsensual, and depicted it as sexually traumatizing for Dick. 2004)

ANYWAY,

I would say his fat ass became a meme recently. and. gonna be honest with you. except for a few depictions, it is not that big of an ass. he is way too skinny to have a truly fat ass. It's still nice! but let's not kid ourselves.

last year, the Harley Quinn tv show changed Dick's model to have a larger ass for an important plot point. which is how we got... the ass casket. cassket.

I won't get into the whole history of Dick Grayson being sexualized in general because that is a huge, huge topic. he's been sexualized since the NTT at least, and superheroes in general are a site of body image politic, bla bla. so I'm sticking to his butt in particular.

around this time, some DC writers and artists are purposefully trying to make Dick's ass prominent on the page. or at least Simone is. "I am writing it, of course there’s Nightwing ass!" Gail Simone, 2014, referring to Nighting/Oracle convergence. did the comic deliver on the ass? sadly no.

a little earlier, Nightwing (2011) #40, from 2013, has a some notable art. I've seen lots of people reference it as some kind of "female gaze" thing, which. I get what that's trying to say but you can't just invert the theory of the male gaze. sorry.

so I think it was the mid 2010s where this idea that he has a great ass starts to influence canon writers and artists, which reached a boiling point 2019 and 20s. now, artists had drawn Dick in a sexual manner before, and had drawn him with a gorgeous ass. I think it's both fan culture and some work of inspired artists that got us to this point of having a canon history of Nightwing Ass. its also important to note that in the later 2010's, the idealized body included a fat ass, which was really not the case in, say, the 90s.

if anyone has earlier issues or instances of Dick Grayson ass-centrism, please send it my way. I've only read like. a quarter of all of Dick Grayson's appearances lol.

Okay I went a bit wild and did the whole challenge for Devon's family. This was really fun and I highly encourage doing this one!

Devon Grace (the influencer + cousin who's getting married) - The reality star, social media influencer and adult entertainer we all know and love! She's also getting married to her new boo, unbeknownst to him.

Stavros Pantazis (the new bae) - Literally new new, they met less than a sim-week ago and are now expecting a little terror of their own. No one will bother remembering his name and Grandma keeps calling him "Vlad".

Briar Rose Grace (the quiet judgmental youngin') - Devon's daughter. What can i say, she's a saucy little shit lol.

Brianna Grace (the competitive sibling) - Devon's younger sister and a bit of a brat in her own right.

Mary-Jacqueline Grace (the instigator) - Devon and Brianna's mother. She's a chainsmoking, hard-drinking hot mess of a broad. She's been known to get into fist-fights with grown men (and win, of course).

Catherine Grace-De la Roca (the cool aunt) - Mary-Jacqueline's twin sister and the only reason Devon and Brianna turned out half-sensible. Art teacher and travel enthusiast.

Rodrigo De la Roca (the world's most interesting uncle) - Catherine's husband and walking encyclopedia of weird and random knowledge. Has some kind of bizarre story for every occasion. Don't ask him to tell the thumb story.

Gabi De la Roca (the holier-than-thou student) - Teenage terror with brains to burn. She's banking on a full scholarship to Britechester to get away from her unhinged family.

Enid Grace (the family recipe gatekeeper) - The matriarch of the Grace family. Rules the kitchen with an iron fist. Whatever you do, don't ask for her rhubarb pie recipe.

Tony Grace (the overly-supportive grandparent) - Enid's husband and family patriarch. Wanna join the circus? Drop out of college? Kill someone? Grandpa's got your back (and probably the shovel).

Ronnie Grace (the bitcoin uncle) - Tech nerd and the lamest guy you will ever meet. Somehow his family hasn't left him for his constant rants about blockchains. May or may not have lost half his savings from investing in Llamacoin. Mary-Jacqueline and Catherine's younger brother.

Keisha Grace (the nosy relative) - Somehow still married to Ronnie (but doesn't know about the Llamacoin yet). Actually loves family gatherings because she gets all the dirt to gossip about with her friends later.

Niko Grace (the peacemaker) - Ronnie's son from his first marriage, at 31 he's still "finding himself" (ie: unemployed musician living in his parents' basement). You can probably find him outside of a family gathering trying to push weed on his younger cousins.

Grayson Grace (the golden child) - It's really not hard to be the golden boy when your older brother sells weed to children.

Tabitha Loveless (the passive-aggressive auntie) - A widower, Tony's older sister and Devon's great-aunt. Tabitha may or may not have flown to the gathering on her broom.

Karen Loveless (the live-laugh-love mom) - Tabitha's daughter. Cheerful to a fault, but please don't ruffle her couch cushions or you will face the wrath of God. Has been in a 17-year old standoff with Aunt Enid over that goddamn pie recipe.

Eddie and Jason Loveless (the d.i.n.k.w.a.d's) - Karen's son and son-in-law. They just got back from a cruise and can't wait to tell you all about it. They're really living their double-income-no-kids-with-a-dog life to the fullest. They considered leaving because their precious pooch, Tangerine, was not given her own place setting.

Kurt Loveless and Monica Song (the anxious new parents) - Eddie's twin brother and his fiancée. Just welcomed a bouncing baby boy, Chevron Fritz Loveless. Baby Chevron is so special that he spends 18.5 of 24 hours a day screaming his sweet little head off. If it weren't for his mother Karen, Eddie is convinced he would kill his twin brother and take over his life. Monica showed up to the reunion with baby shit on her shirt and is unfazed.

Kelly Loveless-Strong (the wino soccer mom) - Tabitha's other daughter and Karen's younger sister. She's convinced her precious boy is going to make it to the World Cup (that is if he can get tf off of Twitch). Fun fact: there's definitely wine in that coffee cup. Curious why you'll hunt devon grayson for sport? I'm a follower via your sex ed posts but you've made me curious about batman, and I found one of your older posts about how you like Bruce's character in the Fugitive comics so I started there. It was a little bit ago but I've considered exploring more comics. since grayson was one of the authors I figured I'd look into more work written by her. anyway I guess just for a sampler I'd hunt Devin Grayson down for retconning Dick to be Romani in the most grody stereotyping and fetishistic way possible; the novel where Oliver Queen is, like, way too into talking about how people think him and Batman are fucking their sidekicks and definitely seems like he does in fact want to fuck sidekicks; the time Dick was raped (I know Devin Grayson has since apologized for claiming it wasn't rape, still hate that she wrote it); weird and bad Helena writing in Nightwing/Huntress miniseries and also Barbara implying that Dick is into Helena because she reminds him of Bruce (SCREAM); and also the time in the 2022 pride issue where Damian had to have it explained to him that he shouldn't tear gas people at a pride parade.

Some Alice Context In The AU Part I

-Is 16 years olds as I wanted to keep the AU date accurate as I do like the idea of 2021 than 2017 as it made morse sense than S2 doing a complete 180.

-Is a main character alongside with the trio being the “big sister” of the group who plays the role of being both the Andy and Kyle to the three.

-As I mention on my previous AU as a result of having been no longer possessed by the splinters, she’s connected to the essence of Chucky’s fragmented shards of his soul from the spell resulting in her being connected to him and having visions of her possessed aunt that I’m might write them out again in concept within the AU

-Is on the hunt for Chucky and to find her aunt with her hoping if she’s the visions are confirmed that she’s still in there and not some meat puppet with no soul with a serial killer in it.

-Is living with a family friend to Andy and Kyle being “Mrs Grayson” who acts as her “legal guardian” while in Hacksensack

-Goes to the high school the trio goes to in the AU (I didn’t them being in 8th grade switch that with 9-10th grade then I would buy it more but maybe it’s because I grew up on an island with middle schoolers partying) with her also Junior’s math tutor hence I mention she was shocked to find out him and Jake were related

-Okay I mention that the trio have character arcs in each season but with Alice’s one even if smaller is to let those around in her life not shut them out even if she’s older then the Jake, Devon, and Lexy.

-Has mixed feelings for her Barb as while she loves her she often questions of her loved her or her dad with her also wondering was her mom gonna leave him (I can’t remember much since I haven’t watched Curse mainly it’s too painful to watch it especially with I don’t want to accept that Nica’s that character who was likely “doomed from the start”)

'Ashes of Victory' --A Review

The ninth novel in the Honorverse series serves as a conclusion to a three-book arc in the series that begins with In Enemy Hands, continues with Echoes of Honor, and concludes here. Honor Harrington is alive, and well and has returned home with half a million prisoners from the Havenite Prison Planet known as Hell.

Ashes of Victory is the story of her triumphant return home. I would say the first third of the book or so is centered around just Honor coming to grips with having been declared/believed to be dead. She has an emotional reunion with her parents (her mother had given birth to twins, which satisfied the requirement Grayson had for an heir to her Steading) and her cousin Devon has inherited her Manticoran title (Honor is amused by this, as she can imagine his horror at the news-- while we don't meet him, he's described as a bookish/Professorial type who would very much not interested in things like a title.) She also has to face the facts: the extent of her injuries is going to keep her from active naval duty for at least a couple of years since she'll need reconstructive surgery.

There's a heart-wrenching moment for Nimitz as well-- as the extent of his injuries becomes clear and the humans realize he has lost his ability to communicate with his fellow Treecats, though his bond with Honor remains intact and as strong as ever. It's unclear if he recovers some ability to communicate with his fellow Treecats, but what Honor does is manage to help prove that Treecats are as intelligent as humans and full communication starts to become possible thanks to sign language systems.

Honor gets her battlefield promotion confirmed (and becomes Admiral) and, since she's out of the fighting for a bit, starts teaching at the Saganami Island Naval Academy to shape the minds of future generations of naval officers-- not just from Manticore, but from Grayson as well.

Hey, remember Steadholder Mueller? He was sort of kind of involved in a plot to overthrow Protector Benjamin that got somebody else beheaded and he frantically threw everyone he possibly could under the bus to avoid being implicated himself? (Flag In Exile, fifth book of the series.) Well, he's back and he's been biding his time and martialling his power and he's emerged as the leader of the Opposition on Grayson. He doesn't know it, but he's also under investigation but before that can come to fruition, his conspirators are revealed to be agents of Masada. There is unease on Grayson- especially when rumors start flying that annexation into the Star Kingdom is being discussed. (It's not precisely that: the famously independent San Martin has joined, but it's... kind of a commonwealth situation? They maintain their autonomy but also have representation of some kind in Manticore's Parliament?) Poor Mueller is in over his head and doesn't realize until it's too late.

Meanwhile, on Haven, things are going great, and by great I mean that Rob Pierre is dead. Admiral McQueen tries to launch a coup. Oscar Saint-Just detonates a hidden nuke underneath the Octagon and decimates McQueen, her forces, and a hefty amount of the military leadership to boot. Admiral Theisman is recalled to take charge of the Capital Fleet. Admirals Tourville and Giscard are believed to be next on the list of Admirals to go (i.e. be shot) and the military situation collapses on them. They are on the verge of utter defeat thanks to Manticore's new offensive and technologies to boot.

But, a surprise assassination attempt on the combined leadership of Manticore and Grayson fails- but kills Manticore's Prime Minister which leads to a change of government. The opposition comes in and demands a halt to the fighting, believing Haven to be defeated. Queen Elizabeth is fucking pissed about it but has no choice. A ceasefire follows along with negotiations and Admiral Theisman launches a coup of his own, killing Oscar Saint-Just.

Y'all...

I am not sure how to feel about this book. The first third to half of it is just about perfect. Pays off so many plot lines laid down in the previous two books of this arc. There are great character moments as Honor returns home and is reunited with friends and family and faces up to the cost of her injuries and time on Planet Hell. (The weird awkward romance between her and White Haven is touched upon, but we don't get back around to that-- I'm thinking we will at some point though.)

But the ending to this one leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's... awkward. To his credit, Weber acknowledges that he had to make a mild retcon in an afterword. Basically, eagle-eyed readers noted that in an earlier book, the Prime Minister of Manticore must command a majority in the Commons. Weber tweaked that here to make it the House of Lords. That change is small, but significant and explains how the Opposition was able to force a change in government-- and, it turns out that Monarchs of Manticore are required to marry a commoner. I am assuming that this will be paid off in future volumes... somehow. But a political short-circuit on Manticore's part also covers up for the fact that Haven is a hot mess.

How can any polity survive such instability? It's all coups and counter-coups and counter-counter-coups and nukes going off and just randomly killed a million people or so. I don't see how you can have that instability without some kind of popular unrest breaking out.

I mean, on the one hand, I get it: the Honorverse train keeps on rolling. But on the other hand: this is kind of a wet fart noise of an ending to a really excellent three-book arc to this series. (Also, there's a lot of really technical exposition in this one-- maybe more than in previous novels, I don't know. And yes, it's military sci-fi, so what did I expect, but it slows this book down in parts in ways I did not like.)

Overall: Starts strong, but the ending is not particularly satisfying-- however, these three book-arc have sold me on keeping on keeping on when it comes to the Honorverse, so I guess we'll see what's next. My Grade: *** out of ****
