currently, spotify does not pay any royalties to any song that reaches less than 1,000 streams a year.
according to some sources, the new deal they've reached with Universal Music Group will attempt to push forward the plan to withhold all royalties from any artist who reaches less than 1,000 listeners a month.
that's right. Universal and Spotify, reportedly, want to stop paying any musician who doesn't have 1,000 monthly listeners.
stop using Spotify. Spotify is not a music platform. it’s a tech platform designed to extract labor and earnings from musicians and place it into the pockets of executives. they aren't even hiding it anymore. it's worse than piracy.

i love when they remix this in the club
Because someone is on the ball, Turner Classic is playing (among other WWII films) The Great Dictator today.
If you haven't seen it, please do. It was produced by Charlie Chaplin in the late 1930s, when it became clear that the war was going to happen, and came out in 1940 after it had started. Essentially, Chaplin realized that his famous mustache was about to be usurped forever by a fascist, and that fascist was going to kill a lot more people in the future than he had already.
It's a parody, made before the worst horrors of the Nazi regime were known to the general public, so there is discomfort here (if you've seen Disney's Der Fuhrer's Face, you'll get the idea), but the movie ends with Chaplin essentially saying "fuck it, no one else seems to be speaking out about this and I'm going to use my platform to do that."
For context, this character is a Jew who has been mistaken for the dictator (for obvious mustache-related reasons), and has been sent onstage at a rally to give a speech. Instead of trying to impersonate Hitler, he says what he really thinks. And keep in mind, Chaplin was coming out of semi-retirement for this. It was the first time most people had ever heard him speak, and this is what he said:

The healthcare strike in Portland, Oregon is in its third week with no clear end in sight. Front-line caregivers with the Providence Healthcare System negotiating union contracts at multiple hospitals that would improve employee working conditions and protect legally-mandated nurse:patient ratios so nurses don't get assigned an unmanageable and unsafe number of patients per shift. There's been some progress with negotiations, and the governor of the state is putting pressure on both sides to end the strike soon, but Providence continues to hold out on key issues.
As a float pool nurse, every shift I go to whatever floor is understaffed. In nearly every unit I've been to, there have been patients who still be in the ICU, getting one to one care. But because we don't have enough critical care staff, we transfer This is not safe for patients or staff. And it's not just medical safety. It takes time to talk out a problem instead of calling security, or to help someone with severe mobility issues go to the bathroom, or to sit with someone crying. The kind of care that makes you feel like a person, not just a patient, takes time. The more patients I have per shift, the less time I have for each of them.
A strike is our strongest negotiating tactic. And as long as we're on strike, we're not getting paid. The longer you don't get paid, the harder it is to not cross the picket line. We're already out two paychecks so far. A lot of people cannot afford to lose that much income. As the primary income earner for our household: GOD I would love to make money again. That is what Providence is banking on. They're losing a TON of money during this strike, but they've got deeper pockets than their workers. They are betting that they can survive the strike longer than the union can.
You can support the strike by donating to the Oregon Nurses Association's hardship fund which provides money to caregivers so they don't have to scab. (I'll put a link in a reblog I'll make right after posting this.) There's also a public petition you can sign that I'll also link. And if you're in the Portland area, we've got picket lines at like nine different places at any given point. Even just awareness is helpful. Providence wants people to be angry at the striking healthcare workers, not them.

we often talk about puritan thought crime culture in fan spaces in a short-handed or dismissive way, but I actually need to take a moment to talk about it in a deep way. the idea that there are good and bad people, and the bad people are dangerous and need to be punished and exiled, and we can and should identify and exile the bad people from our in group—that is a pervasive idea in mainstream culture.
this Christian, Imperial idea is generating massive profits to the prison industrial and security complex on institutionalized slavery, rape, and murder—especially trans women of color. it is a Power Idea that is everywhere. it governs how we talk about safety, harm, and health. it convinces us to be shitbags to each other and ourselves. it is not just an anti thing. we are all doing this shit in almost every space I have existed in.
when a group has firmly labeled you as an evil enemy, you can't convince them to see things differently by combatting them on this flawed premise. you have to change the terms of the conversation. and you're not going to get far by using the exact same Power Idea to vilify them. I have never seen that work.
what you can do is actually learn about this Power Idea via the wealth of history and academia on the subject, not just treating them as trending terms you can win argument with. then you discard this idea from your own life as much as you can, and find new ways of acting and relating. you have to work with other people to disarm this idea. this is hard to do when you are attacked and hurt, but if you stick to the fundamental values of collective human rights, it's easier to navigate.
this is a dire problem that should be taken seriously by us all, and I don't mean that this fan culture toxicity is especially bad or the people doing this are bad people. it's important because this problem is everywhere, and it's especially affecting young people and getting in the way of leftist solidarity organizing. "antis", like most people in our society, are deeply disenfranchised from sexual health and safety, especially as children, because we have very little recourse to address sexual harm, and don't widely support healthy sex. THATS the fucking problem we need to work together to address.
and we can't do that by fucking harassing each other online.

yeah, so much power exchange is about emotional and physical vulnerability and caretaking. you purposefully put someone into a raw place, sometimes with big emotions, and help them through it. which is absolutely a hot fetish of mine because wow do I have power over you when you're vulnerable! show me your soft underbelly etc.
most of my experience with "vanilla" sex also involves emotional vulnerability and comfort. sex can be very very intimate and emotional. I think it's a vast terrain for fantasies.
I’m not sure how many people realize that there’s a way in which hurt/comfort is actually very kinky, because at its core you’ve got this emotional power exchange fantasy where one character is vulnerable and helpless and the other takes care of them. In the case of stories involving grievous injuries, where someone is bedridden for a long time, you often end up with two characters in a 24/7 total power exchange relationship without a safeword. It just doesn’t involve as many whips and dog collars.
