Thinking about a concept where Juno swaps Annabeth and Reyna instead.

Annabeth and Reyna are fine, because they’ve always been able to handle just about anything the gods threw at them. Piper accidentally has her gay awakening via fake memories of a relationship with Reyna and is really confused why her girlfriend is acting so weird. Reyna and Leo bicker non-stop because even without her memories Reyna knows what she’s doing and she’s very used to getting people to listen to her but Leo will not be serious for even one second.

Percy would start fist fighting the gods in the first week. Jason has never been more stressed in his life because he never even wanted to be praetor but it was manageable while he was doing it with Reyna and now he’s alone. What the hell is he supposed to do.

By the time Annabeth shows up at Camp Jupiter, Jason is so relieved someone knows what they’re doing that he immediately asks her to be praetor, now if she’ll excuse him he needs to go have an anxiety meltdown in a corner somewhere

like every time I see a high-note text post about the percy/frank/hazel dynamic it's about "WOW frank and hazel think percy is so cool hazel literally thought he was a god he is so powerful." like yeah. did you guys know that they're also friends and they love each other!!!! did you know that percy admires frank and frequently praises him and encourages him to build up his self-worth and confidence! did you know that hazel comforted percy when he was emotional and scared at the neptune altar in camp jupiter and he gets angry when phineas insults and degrades hazel for being undead! did you know that frank and hazel saved him when he was so frightened and disturbed by evil centaurs and cyclopes that he was paralyzed and couldn't move!

did you know that frank and hazel also just have their own things going on divorced from percy because they're heroes of olympus too! did you know that they aren't just decorations for percy's character they are their own people! idk something to keep in mind (I'm a SON stan if u can't tell)

I haven't read HoO so idk I could be wrong/maybe they talk about it in the series but let me just lay out for you what I know: 1) there's a Roman demigod camp called Camp Jupiter 2) It's run like the Roman military 3) there's also a city/complex for adults/families within/attached to it(?)

Anyway the point is that I think it's super interesting that the Roman counterpart to Camp Half Blood (named after the kids it supports/shelters/teaches) is named Camp Jupiter? Like first of all I feel like "camp" in a military setting makes me feel like it's transitory but they've clearly made something pretty permanent so why go with "camp" instead of say "fort" or "base"? And the fact that it's named after the King of the Gods sounds to me like it's indicative of their values; where the Greek camp (lol) values the heroes they're training, the Roman camp appears (again, without reading) to value the gods over the participants of their programming/organization?

i read lady midnight right when it came out, then i didn't read the rest of the trilogy til 2022. so it took me a minute to start enjoying kit as a character (which i do!). and i remember going into lady midnight like "oh a trilogy without a herondale main character, this will be interesting!" and then i got to the end reveal and rolled my eyes so fucking hard

one of the things i’ve noticed that changes between this series and the last is the newfound emphasis on diplomacy & decorum. i do understand why, both in how the narrative changes w the introduction of new ideas and frameworks as well as how it might want to adapt to have its own voice, themes, etc. but gone are the days of yes-anding oneself into strange situations and in are those of yet another scene highlighting the importance of a letter of introduction—and that was personally a huge reason why i liked the original series so much. i don’t even mind like diplomacy as a narrative device when it’s equipped in interesting ways but when it’s constant introductions to new characters that go relatively similarly every time & a very clear narrative voice insisting that original solution wouldn’t work when it’s 1. more interesting to me personally and 2. not even working any better practically, then that starts to get super boring

Lumine is kind, brave, strong and pretty. When you chose to see her story, you arleady expected that many may fell in love with her. And because of that, you become 'blind' to boys feelings towards you. Xiao still has to learn more about his own feelings towards you. After all he never experienced something like this before. But you can always count on him. If you call him, he will appear before you as fast as he can, if he joins to travel a bit with you he will make sure that no harm comes your way. So why? You started to leave him alone more and more with Lumine. The blonde traveler was confused by this too… Did he do something wrong? Was he too harsh with his words lately? Even when he brought crystalfly, you would give them to Lumine with saying "Don't worry! I will bring them to her!" But...it was for you? Are you not happy with this type of gift anymore? Finally it happened that the two of you are alone. He asked if he did something wrong but you with confusion on your face said "No? Why do you think so?" but before he could respond you started talking about your thoughts that Lumine likes his presents and when he helps her fight. When he asked why you talk about Traveler you said "Well... aren't you in love with her?" ... He didn't know what to say for a moment, then he simply stated that he only admires Lumine as warrior but he doesn't hold such feelings towards her. "Oh really?" He finally got hope that this misunderstanding is cleared but then you continued with big smile "You know... you don't have to be shy! I will gladly help you win her heart!" Xiao can't understand humans and their way of thinking at all...

Childe is sure his attraction towards you is so obvious! After all he doesn't shower anyone with so many presents and trying to invite you for dates all the time or making sure to bring you all monster drops that you need by himself. Of course he always bothers Lumine for sparing but anyone with eyes can tell that he has feelings towards you... and yet... "Childe, this doesn't work, Lumine is not a jealous person! You have to change your approach!" Approach? What do you mean by that? "I know you want to make Lumine jealous by giving me so many gifts but you only make her hurt by this!" Childe was smiling, not showing how confused he is. When he asked you what do you mean by that you smiled and showed thumbs up "Don't worry! I will help you win Lumine's heart!!" Well it seems everyone except you can tell that he has feelings for you. At first he played it off, whatever you told him to do for Lumine he did it for you. And yet you still refused to 'see' what his heart really yearns for. But even when he still continues doing that you finally started to get angry at him for not taking it seriously so he had to stop. Childe had enough and told you that he loves you "Hm? I love you too!!" you respond and he smiled "You're my best friend!" you added and his smile immediately faded. If you weren't here he would tear his hair out in frustration. But he won't give up. He will continue showering you with his love till you acknowledge it.

Venti may write poems and songs about love but this is his first time experiencing romantic feelings himself and he wasn't shy about his love towards you. Whenever you two meet he would sing or recite new poems to you that are basically confessions. And yet you never really responded to them. You would say you like them but never tell whenever you feel the same or not. He thought maybe you're shy or still wondering who you really love. Till the day when you asked if he told Lumine about the poems he wrote. He was a bit surprised but he said that no, he wanted to add that they are meant only for you but you stopped him and said. "Oh… then you should quickly tell her! I'm sure she will love them!! You know… there are many guys fighting for her heart! So don't waste time!" Ah... you're so adorable in his eyes! Even your oblivouses is so cute!! And you're so kind! Want to help him get Lumine (even if he is not interested in her!!!) He wants to hug you and kiss you! So please stop being so blind to his affections!! The good thing is that you think other guys are into Lumine as well. Sometimes he would help you while you help other guys 'get Lumine', he hopes that you will see he doesn't feel love towards Traveler. You can expect him to be more touchy now. Holding your hand if you go somewhere, when you all rest he will place his head on your lap. This only makes you even more confused. If he likes Lumine why is he behaving like this? Venti will keep doing that till you realize his affections towards you.

Wriothesley would often invite you for tea, even after your group left Fortress of Meropide. He may be too busy to take some free days from work but whenever he can he will join your group or try to invite you for some little dates. This is why he was really surprised when you started to talk more about Lumine when alone with him. And even more surprised when he learned you think he is attracted to Traveler and those alone moments were for him to learn more about her. It was amusing, after all he doesn't remember if he even said anything that would imply that he prefers Lumine over you. But he wasn't disheartened by this. Even if you try to talk about Lumine he will change the subject to be about you, he wants to learn more about you after all. No matter how hard you try 'push' him towards Lumine, he won't be moved at all. You started to be confused by this whole thing and one day when you two were drinking tea, the subject already being about you, you gasped. Wriothesley thought that finally you realized. "Why didn't you told me it's not Lumine you like?" he smiled wile sipping on his tea, finally his feelings reached you. "It's Clorinde, right!?" He choked on his drink. The worst thing is you thought his reaction means you're right. After making sure he is alright it was even harder for you to accept that you are the one he likes, thinking he is just shy to talk about his love life. "Aww I never expect that Duke to be such a shy person when it comes to love~" He could only sigh at this… but he won't give up on you.

Lyney whenever he knows you will be watching his magic show, he always prepares something special just for you. But this time he wanted the bouquet of flowers to appear on your lap at the end of show. After the show, your group came to Lyney and Lynette to tell them how much enjoyed it, but.... For some reason Lumine was the one holding the bouquet, not you. After your group thanked the twins for tickets for the show you came to Lyney and whispered to his ear "Oh Lyney! Next time you have to pay more attention where Lumine sits, somehow the flowers ended on my lap."And with that you left. Lyney, dumbfounded, looked at Traveler, who only gave him an apologetic smile and went after you. The magician could see how his sister tried not to smile, probably amused by this situation. Lyney was a bit devastated by this. He was sure you would see his feelings towards you! So why?! Why do you think he likes Lumine?! After that you would see Lyney more often, he would come to TeaPot or while traveling in Fontaine your group would 'accidentally' meet him. But this didn't work for Lyney in the end because you thought he wants to help and spend more time with Lumine. Lyney was devastated and his other siblings noticed it too, when they learned about their brother's problem, they wanted to help him. Heloir came with a poison potion that will help you fall in love with Lyney. After that Lyney had to stop his siblings from 'helping' him… But he won't give up easily, he will do anything so you will finally notice his feelings.

Freminet already had troubles how to approach you with his feelings. Not only there are many other guys interested in you, but even his brother Lyney. But he won't give up easily, he is determined to tell you how he feels about you. Yet there was something he never expected to be standing between his love towards you… "Aww, Fremi, this place is amazing!" He took you to an underwater cave he found, many colorful fishes swimming around made the place look magical. He was happy you enjoy it until... "So… when are you planning to take Lumine here?" Huh? This took him off guard. Before he could ask why'd you ask about Lumine you continued. "Oh I have some ideas to make it a surprise date for her!!" He didn't say anything, too shocked with what you said. And that was a moment he realize that you think he loves Traveler. Freminet read many books, but even in the books he never saw anything about someone thinking that the one who loves them actually loves another one. He was ready to 'fight' for your heart but now, he is not sure how to approach this problem. The only thing he came up was to just confess his feelings but… just thinking about it made his whole face look like tomato and heart beating too fast for his liking. At least he heard from his other siblings that Lyney has the same problems as him…

I love the detail of characters like Will still saying "dear God" and not by the angel or something. it's relatively minor but it's such a good little reminder that he grew up as a mundane & not a shadowhunter

I think anyone who’s read chot and finished feeling disappointed or uneasy with the lack of moral nuance should read this. This is IT.

The lack of good/bad nuance was one of THE biggest letdowns of chot, and I think seen most clearly in the scene where Grace confesses to Jesse. When I tell you I had to skip it because I hated Jesse so much in that moment 🤡 like that’s your sister, who you, more than anyone know was abused her whole life, who gave herself up to try do one thing right after a lifetime of being used as a demonic tool for her mother’s sick agenda (can I repeat, HER MOTHER’S SICK AGENDA) — who unlike James (and I’m not justifying what he went through or saying it wasn’t bad) has no support system at all. I’m not saying what grace did wasn’t terrible, but if there was ANYONE who could have shown her one semblance of understanding, just one bare fraction of it, it should have been jesse. it should have been jesse. and he didn’t. not one ounce of it. it was just awful to read. like reading an oversimplified children’s book where the Good Guys Are All Good and the Villain is 100% Bad In Every Way.

No — what Jesse does, when his sister tells him the way she was used by their mother whom he knows to be abusive and sick, from the prison cell that she gave herself up to, is immediately forget any of that and feel nothing but repulsion. Where is the consistency? Where is the loyalty? Where is the basic empathy for your sister, and if not that then for a tortured and hopeless girl who all her life had only experienced a toxic and cruel excuse of ‘love’? Grace was the tool for TATIANA’S sick desires. But he did not give one damn. I never saw Jesse the same after that.

I find it necessary to say that I am not excusing what Grace did or saying what James went through wasn’t horrible, it was, but the fact that non-graces (and in a way that’s how it’s portrayed) are treated like 100% total saints, always the victims, always done wrong and grace herself is seen as 100% a morally wicked villain who inflicted harm on purpose all the time, none of which is true, when we could’ve had some acknowledgment of the moral mid-ground where both exist was such a disappointment.

not jesse saying this quote at the beginning of CHOT just to absolutely relentlessly crucify and ostracize his little sister grace, who this quote applies to a thousand times better. it’s the hypocrisy for me.

Thinking about the lost trio’s mortal parents

Thinking about Esperanza and Beryl both being clear-sighted (it’s said that Beryl knew who Zeus was, both times, and Esperanza specifically talked to Leo about his powers and seemed to know who Hera was).

Thinking about Beryl, who was famous and had so much and who did everything to stay in the public eye. Who would have given it all, including sacrificing her own kids, to get Zeus’ attention back. Who only ever wanted Zeus for herself and never for her children. Who named Jason to placate Juno’s anger and ultimately gave up Jason to her. Who even in death remained bitter and blamed Thalia running away for her own choices and her death, saying she left when Beryl needed her the most, despite the fact that Thalia was nine and severely neglected and thought Beryl had killed her brother and an adult’s choices should never have been her responsibility to begin with. Beryl blamed it all on Olympus and showed no regret for her actions. Who thought she could just neglect both of her children and abandon her two year old with no consequences and that Jason would still join her. Who only cared about Jason once he was a hero and a warrior, and even then only cared for him as a tool of revenge she could use against the gods.

Thinking about Esperanza, who had nothing. Who was smart and skilled and barely scraping by despite her degree. Who would have given everything to keep her son safe. Who had a son prophecied to be a hero and tried to look the Fates in the eye and say no, because he was her son first and destined for bigger things second. Who banned Hera, the queen of the gods, from their apartment because the gods couldn’t have Leo, not yet, not when he was still so young. Who still tried to prepare Leo, with everything she had, because she knew she couldn’t keep him from his fate in the long run, but also knew there were at least tools she could give him that would help. Who, despite knowing that a god had once loved her, only wanted Hephaestus as a father for Leo, never as a partner for herself. Who only ever worried about the ways she could fail Leo, never about him failing her. Who was happiest around her son and loved him more than her own life. Who, even in death, never could have blamed Leo.

Thinking about Tristan, who is in some ways a mirror to both Beryl and Esperanza. Tristan grew up with nothing and eventually, as an adult, he suddenly had everything, except the things that really mattered to him. He couldn’t keep Aphrodite and never fell in love again after her. Tristan can’t see through the Mist, but he had his heart shattered by the mythological world anyway, even without seeing. He couldn’t save his father because at the time he didn’t have the money to pay for the treatment, he only became famous after.

His relationship with his daughter is really strained. He’s probably terrified of losing Piper like he lost his dad and Piper’s mom. Tristan works and works and works because he thinks if they just have enough he can keep Piper safe (because even if he couldn’t have kept her mom that way, enough money absolutely could have saved his dad), but that makes him unable to give Piper his attention, which is what she needs the most. Hell, he thinks he’s protecting her by keeping her away from his celebrity nonsense, and in a way he sort of is, but it’s not what Piper wants.

Thinking about Tristan seeing through the Mist in TLH and breaking. Thinking about Tristan finally seeing Piper, and her having to give up the one thing she’s wanted all this time and make him look away again because it shatters him.

Esperanza and Beryl could both see their children for who they were, one for the better, the other for the worse. Tristan can never see Piper for who she truly is. We’ve seen how it would destroy him if he did.

Thinking about Tristan losing everything until the only thing he has left to give Piper is his attention—and that’s enough. (I still wish that had been a choice on his part after realizing that’s what Piper wants and needs instead of being forced on him, but I digress.)

Tristan could have been more like Beryl. Their stories are decently similar. But even though he can never fully see Piper for who she is, and even though it took him longer than it should have, when his daughter needed him most, he turned around and learned to be more like Esperanza.

Every change in the new flower card book

Because I think about this series a normal amount, I went through my old copy of "An Illustrated History of Notable Shadowhunters and Denizens of Downworld" from 2016 and my new kickstarter edition that arrived yesterday, and took notes on every change. Some characters were added, some were given new art or facts, some had their information updated, and some are the same as they ever were. I split all these changes into categories, so you can look up what interests you. Full spoilery details below the cut.

First off, the general formatting was changed slightly. Instead of characters being split into categories based on series (TID, TLH, TMI, TFSA, TDA) and alphabatized by first name within those categories, they're all in one cohesive list that's alphabatized by surname.

So, to start with, there were a couple overall changes. In my old edition, characters had their common names listed above their flower card (ex: Alec Lightwood), and their full names on the page to the left that held their facts and stuff (ex: Alexander Gideon Lightwood). Some characters also have their maiden name on their flower card but their married name on the fact page, or vice versa (Celine Montclaire and Celine Herondale, or Helen Blackthorn and Helen Penhallow-Blackthorn). In the new edition, everyone is referred to by only one name, the common name that was already on the flower card. The section in the personal information for married/maiden name was also removed for all characters except Sophie Collins, Jocelyn Fray, Tessa Gray, Cecily Herondale, Imogen Herondale, Maryse Lightwood, and Jessamine Lovelace Gray. Characters with alterations to their personal information: Magnus Bane's birth year was changed from "unknown" to "early 1600s" Arthur Blackthorn's birth year was changed from 1973 to 1964, though 1973 still makes more sense with the timeline and I believe that 1964 is a mistake.
