Jason is the anomaly, son of Jupiter but actually liked by Juno, a loyal Roman who’s 12 years of service get thrown away to live with the enemy, the son of the king but hates leadership, the younger brother to a Greek that will never truly know his sister until all of his memories get wiped.

Piper and Leo knew each other before the lost hero.

Frank and Hazel knew each other before son of Neptune.

Percy and Annabeth were dating before Heroes of Olympus.

I did not care for the Son of Neptune. didn't care for it. nope. it was boring and at points kind of painful to read.

and dumbing a goddess down to hippie is... um... kind... kind of...

okay listen. i know ricks portrayals of the gods sucks ass. hard. but he couldn't have TRIED with iris???

i preferred the lost hero. this is probably because im a lost trio lover, you think. no. at first little me was a hardcore piper AND jason hater, and i STILL thought the lost hero was better than the son of neptune. i loved leo though. i have since corrected my ways, dont worry.

I want to discuss Hazel's character, and how it was done really dirty by Rick:

• There were bits of shining potential, things which could’ve emerged as an actual arc for her, but they were never developed upon.

For eg. there was a part where she felt sorry for the Minotaur, and saw in Pasiphaë a hate for the for the former which mirrored her own mother’s. Maybe, she could’ve had an arc dealing with all that abuse, her conflicted feelings towards her mother; she harbours a twinge of a grudge deep down, it’s her burden to overcome. This could also set the stage for her fatal flaw- holding grudges.

We don't get any of it, yet the narrative would like us to believe she's received development when she hasn't.

• I personally wish that her personality had been actually well-written; I mean in canon it's low-key vanilla and fell flat for a main character.

• Her character also lacked a concrete arc, and the ball was dropped multiple times throughout the saga.

one of my fav scenes in the entire riordanverse has to be the one in SoN in which percy makes a 50/50 life or death bet knowing he will win bc he knows gaia has to keep him alive. denying the plot armor allegations is OUT, weaponinzing it is IN

Love how Percy just casually drops lore all throughout the Son of Neptune. Frank and Hazel are getting the encyclopedia knowledge on every monster they encounter plus some extra side stories from how he fought them in gym classes and "oh yea, I had a fist fight with Kronos in Manhatten."

And then they meet Annabeth and realize that behind every goofy looking powerful guy, there's an incredibly smart, capable and even more powerful woman who makes sure he doesn't die on a daily basis and are like, "oh. thats why he's still alive."

i feel like we gloss over the first few pages of SoN FAR too much. i mean, take percy’s name out and i would think it’s all about hercules. the book opens by dropping banger after banger regarding percy’s recent escapades, as if this is some epic greek myth.

like how did rick just casually slip in that percy strangled a sea monster with his bare hands (no biggie) and we as the readers were just like “sounds right, anyway—”

amnesiac!percy being super, super, super protective of hazel to a concerning degree but he brushes it off as maybe she reminds him of someone from his life before. when percy explains his plan of drinking gorgons blood, hazel offers herself up to drink the blood. she’s died once before, she can do it again. percy has something to do, he has people to find. he can’t risk his life for something like this. hazel can do it. chances are, with the doors of death open and thanatos locked up, she can find her way back as a child of pluto.

percy refuses. he won’t let her get a word out. she insists. he refuses. their argument crescendos into him calling her bianca. its draws them all up short. percy is confused, he has no idea whose name that is. he has no idea why his chest hurts so bad. hazel does. hazel knows. its her dead sister’s name. nico’s real sister. the one he lost years ago.

she knew that percy and nico knew each other, nico pretty much confirmed it but he refused to elaborate on any of the details. percy must’ve known bianca. that must be where percy and nico knew each other from. she has grown somewhat used to nico calling her bianca, she had been a substitute, a consolation prize from the underworld. nico couldn’t find his real sister so he settled for a shadow of her. she had thought percy, someone she had grown to think of as an older brother, would be different. yet here he is, with no memory, calling her the name of a ghost, someone she can never hope to live up to. someone she can’t compete with. someone who will always be better than her.
