Okay okay catching up on Bleach because I was putting it off...

So the soul king has an actual name now and it's apparently Adnyeus(?*)[アドナイェウス] which at a glance I thought was some kind of weird mashup of Hebrew Adonai[אֲדֹנָי] and Latin deus as a kind of play on Yhwach's name being based on the tetragrammaton. But actually it's just the name Aidoneus[Ἀϊδωνεύς] which was an old epithet for the Greek Hades, supposedly meaning "The Unseen" which somewhat superficially fits for the Soul King as a king of the dead/underworld.

*(I have no idea where anyone is getting these romanizations I see flying around...)

It's actually not the first time the name has come up. some eagle eyed fans caught that what appears to be "ADNYEUS" was shown back in episode 6 of TYBW in Ryuuken's notes, above the illustration of the castle Silbern. And then at the end of the previous season the anime added a chant to Yhwach's Auswählen that ran:

Kakageyo Gin no Monshou, Haiiro no Sougen, Hikari ni Uzumoreta, Enkan no Michi, Menou no Gankyu, Ougon no Shita, Zugai no Sakazuki, ADNYEUS no Hitsugi. *notably in one of Uryuu's German chants, the Japanese word for a [杯]:"sake cup" was paired with the German word Gral:"Grail", and [盃] and [杯] are alternate kanji for the same word. At the most literal the chant in Japanese just uses the word for "sake cup" like the one he uses for the schrift eucharist, but I feel like the more implicitly western imagery evoked by "skull Grail" or maybe "...chalice" is more in line with the ongoing aesthetic of Quincy spells

I'm not actually in a position to go doing a real deep dive on this but it does seem like at a glance there are associations with that alternate title with a specific incongruous variation of the god of the underworld--that is to say: characterizations of him under this epithets are not consistent with other more common interpretstions-- where he's actually got a lot of strong sun iconography. This of course maps almost perfectly with a bunch of stuff I've ranted on about a few different times in my Bleach ramblings.

Incidentally it is also the scientific namesake of the Papilio aidoneus... a black butterfly... In the first place Bleach's hell-butterflies were already a play on the real world association of butterflies and death, often either as psychopomps or themselves the souls of the dead. That they tie back in to the Soul King himself isn't too big a stretch.

As for this "triplet world" thing... We were already told that Hueco Mundo isn't actually it's own formal realm, it's the interstitial realm that just naturally exists in the space between one world and the next. So it kinda annoys me that this feels like it's really only being acknowledged because after the fact it's just where a big chunk of Bleach's plot happened, rather than actually being cosmologically on par with the other two.

Anyway the translations going around I notice are a little sloppy, mostly in that a few are clearly just machine translated and so ignored the use of Bleach specific terminology, like "reishi" and "kishi" so here's my quick breakdown of it (thank god it's short...)

原初の海から分かたれた尸魂界,現世, 虚圏の三つの世界。 The Three Worlds of Soul Society, This (the mortal) World, Hueco Mundo divided* from the Sea of Origin. 遍く魂魄の流れを司る礎であり, かつ世界の楔たる存在によって, The universal flow of spirits is the foundation to control, as well as the lynchpin of the world which is due to existence, 霊子の世界,器子の世界,砂の楽土の三世界が分離され, the Three Worlds of The World of Reishi, The World of Kishi, The Paradise of Sand are detached*, 『生』と『死』が隔てられた。 "Life" and "Death" were isolated*.

*so interestingly all three of these different words could be translated into english as "separated" but seem to be fairly distinct contextual differences: the first means like cutting one big thing up into smaller things the "A came from B" dynamic being the focus, the second means to be separated out almost like being categorized, and the third is to be isolated or alienated.

So first it's saying the three worlds came from one sea of origin, and that the flow of spirits between those three worlds is the key to existence being what it is, which is to say three distinct realms where death and life are these things that can never coexist. All of which is stuff we really already knew.

Also we're supposed to have just completely forgotten about Hell since it's not the current plot line, I guess? I anything the Three Worlds should be Soul Society, the Material World, and Hell, with Hueco Mundo as the interstitial void/aether, like it was originally defined as. That would at least map more sensibly onto the buddhist 3 realms of Form(Humans & animals: those bound by their physicality), Formless(Deva & Asura: those who exist in a hightened mental/spiritual state), and Desire(Preta & those in Hell: those defined by their strong need for what they lack)

Maybe that only real point of interest is the reference to Hueco Mundo as suna no rakudo[砂の楽土], a "paradise of sand." In this voice I think the idea is that if life and death being separate realms is a bad thing that Yhwach seeks to rectify, then by being an inbetween realm, Hueco Mundo is a paradise, because it's a place of neither life nor death? But if it is a place of rest and comfort then I wonder if that doesn't validate my thoughts on the Vastolorde being the natural path of development for a soul in reincarnation afterall?

That aside, this mostly just lines up with existing Buddhist/Hindu parallels that were always pretty obviously implied but not so directly touched on. Once again things I've babbled about in some form or another already... I'm not about to go digging them all up right now.

Kanji: 果

The kanji for "fruit" is a handy little pictogram of a tree 木 with a big fat fruit drawn in on top.

Readings and vocabulary

果 is pronounced か in most compounds, and means either literal fruit or the result of something (aka the figurative fruits of your labor.) This is the most common reading/meaning since a lot of these words are used frequently:

果実（かじつ） fruit/nut/berry (実 fruit/berry)

果汁（かじゅう） fruit juice (汁 juice, broth)

果物（odd reading くだもの） fruit (物 thing)

結果（けっか） result, outcome (結 tie, bind)

効果（こうか）effect, efficacy (効 effective)

成果（せいか） accomplishment, achievement, good outcome (成 become/make/achieve)

It's also used for two verbs related to results/finishing, in which case it's read は with a た or て immediately after it:

果たす（はたす） finish, achieve, accomplish, carry out (transitive, like 目的を果たす to achieve a goal)

果てる（はてる）end, be finished, be exhausted, perish (intransitive)

果たして, the て form of 果たす (finish or achieve something) can be used like an adverb, and it means something like "Ultimately..." or "In the end..." or "As expected, the end result was..." It's very often used in rhetorical questions showing doubt, like 果たして真実なのだろうか "But is it really the truth (in the end)?"

Meanwhile 果てる likes to be in compound verbs, where it means "completely/utterly" or "to the extreme," usually with negative connotations:

疲れ果てる（つかれはてる）be utterly exhausted (疲れる be tired)

変わり果てる（かわりはてる）be completely transformed, change beyond recognition (a change for the worse - for example, a person's 変わり果てた姿 "utterly changed form" generally means their dead and possibly rotting body) (変わる change)

朽ち果てる（くちはてる）rot away, crumble to dust (朽ちる decay)

And finally 果て, the noun form of 果てる, means "end" or "extremity" or "limit," i.e. the point you reach when you've done the verb 果てる. It can be spelled 果て with the て or 果 without, and is pronounced はて either way. It also appears in the adjective 果てしない "endless, boundless, eternal" (literally "not ending/not having limits")

As a phonetic element

果 is also used as a component in other kanji, most of which share the Chinese-derived reading か, the most common one being 課:

課（カ） section, lesson, chapter (with the "words" radical 言)

菓（カ） candy, sweets, pretty much always in the word 菓子（かし sweets, confectionery, snacks) (with the "plant" radical)

裸（ラ、はだか） naked, nude (with the "clothes" radical; this one's the odd one out when it comes to pronunciation)

踝（カ、くるぶし） ankle, ankle bone (with the foot radical 足)

顆（カ、つぶ） grain of something, granule (head/face radical 頁)

I have a curious question about a voice line from Cater’s Bloom broom card. I have the card, but I have not groovied it. However, I have seen some of the voice lines due to him being on my home screen. When the card released about a year ago now in the Japanese version, I looked at a fan translation for his story and voice lines. I ended up looking at that fan translation for the voice lines again, since I am still working on groovying it. There is a line Cater says where his sisters sent him birthday wishes and wanting to treat him at a café. In the English line, he says that “it is a café his sisters recommend,” but with the fan translation, it says something more along the lines of, “a café they want Cater to recommend.” I wouldn’t have realized that if I hadn’t referred back to the fan translation. I am not doubting the fan who translated it, but I am curious to know which translation is correct, since there is a difference between the sentiments. Thank you very much!

I agree with the official EN translation!

Cater being less than thrilled about going to a cafe recommended by his sisters is likely meant to tie in to how they used to feed him sweet food to the point that he has formed an aversion to it (as we learn in his first birthday vignette).

It is possible that a cafe they recommend will involve sweet things that Cater does not want to eat, but he historically has issues with telling his sisters no so as not to disappoint them :<

Concerning the sentence itself: this is an easy mistake to make (and EN also struggles in this area sometimes) because a subject pronoun is not being specified. Literally translated this would sound something like, "Next time, take to a recommended cafe."

So how are we supposed to know that it is a cafe that Cater's sisters recommend and not one that they want him to choose? Because of the verb form!

If his sisters were asking him to take them somewhere that he himself recommends it would sound something like 連れて行ってもらう, etc., but they say 連れて行く, which is them stating what they are going to do, not them asking him to do something.

While EN has its fair share of translation curiosities, this is not one of them! ^^ This is also not the first time that I have been asked about curious fan translations (re: "the boy with silver hair" in the prefect's room), and it was a great catch!

After breaking up with you, he swore to himself that he would never see you again. Or at least he thought.

The mission at the bullet train finished, and he was waiting to take a nice shower, have japanese food and rest. It was that simple.

On the other hand, your boss wanted you to go after another assaisin (like always) in Japan. This man was suited in Tokyo, and his hotel wasn't far from the airport. You were there, waiting outside to meet him. You disguised yourself as a hostess, and your plan was to take him to bed and then, kill him.

He finally came, and took you by your waist. Nobody could recognize you (you were wearing a black wig, same as your dress and red bottoms). The music was loud, you could barely hear him talk to you.

" では、ご出身はどちらでしょうか？" ( So, were are you from?)

Your japanese was perfect, so you weren't nervous.

" 私はイギリスから来ました " (I'm from England)

You tried to make him shut up, so you stabbed him more, until he dies. His screams were so loud, probably some people already woke up and called the police. In other missions like this, you stay to clean up your mess, so no one suspects. You only called your boss telling him that the drivers that were waiting for you needed to go, you're going in your motorcycle.

The screams stops. He doesn't know where it came from, so he knocks on every door trying to figure out what happened.

"What the fuck is going on? " He murmurs to himself.

There's a door that's open. He grabs his weapon from his hip, and enters. A man he doesn't recognize, is dead. Police sirens are arriving from the streets. He can see the blue and red lights. A cat shaped knife is on the floor, covered in blood. He knows it owner, so he takes it. You promised him that you would never kill again, and look at this. He knew that you weren't a woman of your word, that's why you broke up.

The air is hitting in your face, you hoped for this feeling to never end. Probably because you didn't have anyone in your life who took care of you, so you searched for that feeling in killing other people. Bad people, not just anyone. Your boss promised you would have a vacation after this mission, so could go anywhere, being careful. He trusted you, and you trusted him too.

The only place you can think about is going to the beach. You don't know, why, but it relaxes you.

The police is on the case, and Tangerine is still deciding if going to search for your or not. He doesn't want to see you, but a part of him misses you. To see you. To tell you to stop doing this. So he thinks of going to the beach.

You change your dress covered in blood for another short dress, this time red. You also take off your wig, and let your hair be. The water feels cold in your feet, but refreshing to your body. You walk slowly, hoping nobody's seen you. The police would never know it's you, you were good at your job. Maybe too good.

He calls Lemon to tell him to not wait for him, because something came up. He starts his car and drives to the nearest beach with the GPS. His gut is telling him that she's there. His heart beats fast. It's been years since you broke up. He still wants to see you. If you die, he won't forgive himself for that. When he arrives, he sees a girl with a red dress. It's her. Her short, dark hair and slim figure. He walks fast and screams:

"I think you forgot this, love!" Showing you your cat shaped knife with his hand up.

You couldn't believe this. Was that Tangerine? Your only option is to run, so you do. He's faster than you catches you before you could even reach to your motorcycle.

Souma-san’s songs are as bewildering and open to interpretation as usual! However, this isn’t the first song in ‘Fictions’ to be about looking back on something (gestures to ‘Hiraeth’), and this song evokes SO MUCH nostalgia. I think it’s to do with looking back on something after it’s been lost, and just remembering that, along with the pains with it (hence the scream that SCARES ME EVERY TIME but works so well). The title and repeated ‘Ventura, ventura, space people’ tie the album off with a surreal, ‘Fictions’ feel. This song is looking back on the small things in life; glancing up at the sky, the cool night air (two of my favourite things)-- back to a simpler time.

The short, thorny, graceful hawthorn. The slender hawthorn trunk and branches twist as the years go by. In winter they are particularly beautiful, standing clinging to misty wildernesses and craggy rocky outcrops, or clustered on open ranges of hills that their appearance is spectacular. Leaves and flowers appear simultaneously in May, signalling the change of season from spring to summer. Hawthorn flowers bloom in clusters, so that at the height of spring, rows of white froth run across the fields and mountains, a scene aptly captured by the English writer H. E. Bates as 'the fluffy cream floating in May'.

In spring, when the hawthorn flowers are in full bloom, the air releases a musky, sweet, rich fragrance all around. Small round berries turn burgundy in autumn.

In Ireland, hawthorn is still cherished as a magical tree protected by the fairy kingdom. Tradition has it that if you cut down a single hawthorn tree standing alone in a field or burial mound, you will lose your livestock and household possessions.

Hawthorn trees protect wells and springs as fairy trees. The beautiful flowers of hawthorn are also said to deliver prayers to the heavens. Even today, many people tie rags and other items to hawthorn trees standing near wells and springs, wishing for good luck or that their love will reach the person they love.

Before Christianity, hawthorn was the supreme fertility symbol and at the May Festival, people confided their love, danced to their heart's content and made love in the woods. Among the Celts, spring was the season for marriage, and it was customary to bring a bouquet of hawthorn flowers to weddings to ensure that the couple would be blessed with children.

In Britain, the earliest known hawthorn goddess was Olwen ('white footprints'), a woman of courage, wit and beauty. The well-known mythological tale of Culhwch and Olwen, in which King Arthur's cousin, Culhwch, overcame 40 impossible tasks that seemed virtually unattainable set out by Olwen's father, the giant king, Yspaddaden, and marry his beloved Olwen.

As the beautiful, white hawthorn flowers opened, people celebrated the power of nature and love to bring new life into the world and marvelled at the miracles of sexual activity, pregnancy and childbirth. For the Celts, sexual activity, pregnancy and childbirth were not something to be ashamed of, but an essential part of life and a sacred expression that one could love.

背丈が低くとげをもった優雅なサンザシ。ほっそりとしたサンザシの幹や枝は、年が経つにつれてねじれていく。冬になるとその姿は特に美しく、霧の立ち込めた荒野や、ごつごつとした岩の露頭にしがみつくように立つ姿、また広々と連なる丘に群れをなしている様子は、見事というより他はない。葉と花は5月に同時に姿を現し、春から夏に季節が変わることを知らせている。サンザシの花は群れを成して咲くことから、春の盛り、白い泡立ちの列が野山を縦横に走り、その様子を英国人作家のH・E・ベイツは、「五月に浮かび上がるふわふわしたクリーム」と的確に表現している。

春、サンザシの花が満開になると、麝香 (じゃこう)のような甘く濃厚な香りがあたり一面に放たれる。小さな丸い実は、秋になるとワインレッドに変わる。

アイルランドでは今もなお、サンザシは妖精の国に守られた魔法の木として大切にされている。野原や埋葬塚に一本だけぽつんと立っているサンザシの木を切ると家畜を失うか家財を無くすという伝承もある。

サンザシは妖精の木として、井戸や泉を守っている。また、サンザシの美しい花は祈りを天まで届けてくれるという。現在でも井戸や泉のそばに立つサンザシには、幸運が訪れるますように、あるいは好きな人に思いが届きますようにと願う大勢の人々が、布きれや品物を結び付けている。

キリスト教以前は、サンザシは最高の豊穣のシンボルであり、5月祭には、人々は愛を打ち明け、心ゆくまで踊り明かし、森で愛を交わした。ケルト人の間で春は結婚の季節であり、夫婦が子宝に恵まれるように、結婚式にはサンザシの花束を持っていく習慣があった。

英国では、サンザシの女神として最も古くから知られているのが、勇気と機転と美貌の持ち主、オルェン (‘白い足跡’の意)。アーサー王の従兄弟であるキルフーフが、オルェンの父である巨人の王アスパザデンが課した事実上達成不可能と思われる40の無理難題を克服し、愛するオルウェンと結婚した神話『キルフーフとオルェン』がよく知られている。

美しく、そして白いサンザシの花が開くと、人々は、新しい命を宿す自然と愛の力を祝福し、性の営み、妊娠、出産という奇蹟に驚きの声を上げた。ケルト人にとって、性行為や妊娠、出産は恥ずべきことではなく、人生になくてはならない大切な一部であり、人は愛することができるということの神聖な表現であった。

Dark Matter: a profile

Aside from King Dedede, the most reoccuring antagonist in the Kirby franchise are members of the enigmatic Dark Matter tribe. The tradition of Kirby final bosses being grotesque compared to the rest of the series really started with them and Nightmare in Kirby's Adventure. Unlike Nightmare however, Dark Matter went on to become somewhat of a series staple and when I think of spooky Nintendo lore, they often spring to mind. As such, in this blog post I want to explore Dark Matter.

Dark Matter Trilogy

The first appearance of Dark Matter was in Kirby's Dream Land 2, where it is the true final boss of the game. According to the game's manual, it was responsible for shattering the rainbow bridges connecting the rainbow islands together. It also possesses King Dedede and plans to turn Dream Land into a dark world to inhabit (specifically according to the Japanese Digital 3DS manual). What exactly this means is left unclear in this game. It apparently does this because it is lonely and wants friends, according to an excerpt from the January 2019 issue of the Japanese magazine Nintendo DREAM (translation from Wikirby):

最初に登場したダークマターには、友達が欲しくてちょっと寂しがりやなのでは…という設定も『星のカービィ2』開発当時の社内にあったようですので、今回のフレンズとハートの物語と親和性があるのではとも考えましたが、さすがにダークマターには今はまだ悪役を貫いてほしく (It seems that, when Dark Matter first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land 2, the developers had the idea that he was lonely and wanted to have friends. I thought that this could tie into this game's themes of "friends" and "hearts", but I'd of course prefer for Dark Matter to remain a villain for now.)

When all Rainbow Drops are collected in Dream Land 2 and King Dedede is defeated, the drops turn into a Rainbow Sword and Dark Matter emerges from Dedede. Dark Matter is fought in two forms: one resembling a swordsman and one an eye surrounded by darkness. Of the two, the latter is considered its true form.

Dark Matter returns in Kirby's Dream Land 3, but with heavier guns. The plan is much the same as in Dream Land 2, but this time the stakes are raised. A ball of darkness with a red eye in the center emerges from the depths of space and shatters the rings of Pop Star.

After arriving, the dark cloud spreads five tendrils to five corners of the planet and possesses six beings: Whispy Woods, Acro, Pon/Con, Ado and King Dedede. Kirby and his friend Gooey, who first appeared in Dream Land 2 captured by Dark Matter, set out to face this crisis. During it, they collect heart stars by helping the people of Pop Star and cleanse the darkness from each area by defeating one of the primary possessed beings. All of this culminates in a fight with King Dedede, who probably gets the worst deal out of the possession: a mouth and a Dark Matter eye in his stomach.

If all Heart Stars are gathered, they become the Love-Love Stick after Dedede's defeat. In a similar scenario to Dream Land 2, Kirby follows up Dark Matter to the heart of the black clouds, the Hyper Zone, and defeats Dark Matter. After Dark Matter is gone, a new being called 0 appears. It is a red eye in a larger white body, from which it can spawn smaller Dark Matters. Once 0 is defeated, the Hyper Zone and the black clouds around it collapse. It is thus implied 0 is the source of Dark Matter and may have been behind the events of Dream Land 2 as well.

Another thing that Dream Land 3 adds to the Dark Matter lore has to do with Gooey. According to the manual of the game, he is made of "the same stuff" as Dark Matter but he doesn't have an evil spirit. He also takes on a form similar to Dark Matter during the final battle, which later games have dubbed Mock Matter. Beings can thus be made of the same dark substance as Dark Matter while not being evil. This also adds an additional layer to Gooey in Dream Land 2, as he was captured in that game. Perhaps Dark Matter put him on Pop Star in the first place as a captive.

The final game in the so-called Dark Matter Trilogy is Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and it involves a plot similar to that of Dream Land 3. Instead, this time the Dark Matter beings target a different planet: Ripple Star, where Fairies live. One of the Fairies escapes with the planet's precious Crystal and three Dark Matters give chase, leading them to Pop Star. This is how Kirby gets involved and the three Dark Matters do their possession shtick: on a Waddle Dee, Adeleine and King Dedede.

After Pop Star, the first world of the game, Dark Matter beings do not play a large role until the end of the game. But the game does introduce a whole slew of new Dark Matter beings. The first is Miracle Matter, who controls the black clouds covering Ripple Star. It has the appearance of a many-sided die, some sides covered in red eyes, and it can take on copy ability-esque forms: Bomb, Burn, Cutter, Ice, Needle, Spark and Stone. The black clouds controlled by Miracle Matter also spit out N-Z enemies, indicating they are made of darkness as well.

The final major Dark Matter being in Kirby 64 is 0², who possessed the Queen of Ripple Star. If Kirby and his friends manage to repair the Fairies' Crystal, the darkness possessing the Queen is dispelled and forms the Dark Star. Inside lurks 0², who resembles 0 but also has an angel motif. This might indicate he is 0 resurrected from the dead, though the relation between the two has thus far been kept vague. Both 0² and Miracle Matter appear to be sources of Dark Matter and dark clouds, similar to 0 at least. When 0² is defeated, the Dark Star collapses similarly to the Hyper Zone and the threat of Dark Matter is dispelled once more.

The final game to introduce a Dark Matter being without much ambiguity is Kirby Squeak Squad. A lot of the game revolves around collecting a particular treasure chest. When it is opened by antagonist Daroach, he is enveloped in a black smoke and turns dark. After his defeat, it is revealed he was possessed by Dark Nebula, a being with an eye similar to both incarnations of 0. It has hallmarks of a Dark Matter being, such as possession, a red eye and even has elemental powers similar to Miracle Matter. It also seemingly creates a black hole near Pop Star after it is released. This all makes sense, as its Japanese name is ダークゼロ or Dark Zero. In addition, it is also not called Ruler of the Underworld in Japanese but 暗黒の支配者/あんこくのしはいしゃ (Ruler of Darkness).

It is interesting to note that this Dark Matter being was not roaming around freely in space, trying to create dark worlds or wanting for friends. Instead, it is sealed in a chest and Meta Knight seemingly knows this, as he tried to keep the chest out of the hands of Kirby and Daroach's Squeaks. This potentially suggests there is a history of Dark Matter invasions that goes back futher than just Dream Land 2.

Origins of Darkness

Starting with Kirby's Return to Dream Land for the Wii and under the directorship of Shinya Kumazaki, the Kirby series became more lore focused. Of this new era of Kirby, Star Allies goes the most in-depth about Dark Matter through the being of Void Termina, the final boss of the game.

Void Termina itself is not a Dark Matter being, but more of an empty creature that is influenced by the energy that surrounds it. This is explained in an interview with Kumazaki. Due to this, during the final battle, he takes on the appearance of Kirby and Dark Matter. Kirby because it is the first thing he sees when being unsealed and Dark Matter due to the darkness gathered by the people trying to revive him.

The people trying to revive Void Termina are a cult who worship him as a God of Destruction. According to their leader Hyness, they also worship "matters most dark" and they revive Void Termina by assembling a vessel he is contained in. This is the Jamba Heart, which consists of smaller Dark Hearts, and it is this darkness that Hyness and his minions gather. The Dark Hearts possess and twist the people that grab them, similar to Dark Matter possession. Due to this darkness, Void Termina takes on the appearance of Dark Matter during the final battle.

There is more background to Void and his relation with darkness however. According to the Japanese description of Void Termina, True Destroyer of Worlds (Phase 2), he is the originator of four types of matter: Soul, Heart, Dream and Dark:

夢ドリームが、闇ダークが、魂ソウルが、心ハートが… その物質に 混沌と可能性が全て集い、淵源の祖となり 生誕する。 (When the matters of dream, dark, soul, and heart gather... and combine with chaos and infinite possibilities, the ancestor from the origin is born.)

And according to the description of Hyness in the The Ultimate Choice mode, Void produced darkness at some point in the distant past before being sealed in the Jamba Heart by four heroes:

"All that was written about Void Termina in the ancient scrolls was the progenitor of darkness was vanquished by four heroes of yore, using four spears of the heart."

Void producing darkness may be the ultimate origin of the "Dark Matter" substance in the universe, which in turn may have given rise to 0, 0² and Dark Nebula and the rest of the Dark Matter beings produced by them. The "Dark Matter" substance is likely what is seen in Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64 forming Hyper Zone and Dark Star. Of note is that upon the collapsing, many Dark Matter eyes can be seen in Dark Star, similar to the red eye in the Hyper Zone.

Other appearances

In the Kirby series, there are several other beings that might be made of or are connected to Dark Matter, though it is a lot more loose:

Dark Matter Clone: a clone of Dark Matter's Dream Land 2 incarnation made by the supercomputer Star Dream. It appears in the Meta Knightmare Returns mode of Planet Robobot, which is set in a world parallel to the main Kirby one. It only appears in its swordsman form and wields the Rainbow Sword, based on its memories of his defeat at the hands of Kirby.

Dark Mind: a being inhabiting the world that lays in the Dimension Mirror. Its true form looks like a fiery version of 0 and it formed from evil minds gathering and being born in the mirror according to Kumazaki. These "evil minds" may be a form of darkness/Dark Matter substance. Of note is that Shadow Dedede, another being spawned by the Dimension Mirror, has similar attacks to Dedede's possessed form in Dream Land 3. A mix between Dark Mind and Shadow Dedede, King D-Mind, appears in the two Kirby Clash games.

Dark Crafter: a single-eyed smoke being that drained Dream Land of all its color in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. It operates by possessing Claycia and during its fight, it is revealed that under its colorful appearance, it looks like it is made of darkness.

Conclusion

That is most of what there is to say about Dark Matter lore-wise. A persistent enemy in the Kirby canon that is made of pure darkness and can twist the minds and appearances of those it possesses, with a potential origin that goes back to a being worshiped as a God of Destruction. In short, a black of darkness spot in a series that is otherwise mostly cute and wholesome.

初めてルナティックを見た時はその異質さに驚きました。他のヒーローたちと比べて全く系統が違うという印象です。最初は怖かったです（笑）、特に目が。しかしその生い立ちやユーリ���人物像を知るにつれ、この姿がピッタリだと思うようになりました。顔の手形については桂先生が触れられるかと思いますが、あの怒りとも妖しさとも哀しみとも取れる表情は秀逸だと思います。全体に施されたラインの模様も気に入っています。鋭角的なデザインが好きなので。デザインとは関係ないですが、スーツの性能はやはり手作りという感じですね（笑）。斎藤さんが作ってくれたらあんなことにはならなかったのになぁと個人的にはちょっと残念に思います。まぁ、そこは実力でカバー。

僕にとってはヒーローたちに負けない、まぎれもない "ヒーロー”です。

When I saw Lunatic for the first time, I was surprised at the different quality (of his design). I had the impression that his lineage was completely different compared to the other heroes. I was scared at first (laughs), especially of the eyes. However, as I learned about Yuri's upbringing and personality, I grew to think that his appearance was perfect. Katsura-Sensei added the handprint of his face (to his mask), which is excellent because I think that the expressions (Lunatic's) can be taken as angry, mysterious and sad. I also like the pattern of the lines applied to the whole because I like sharp design. While it has nothing to do with the design (concepts), the performance of the suit is still handmade (laughs). Personally, I'm a little disappointed that Mr. Saito had not made it, but his (Lunatic's) abilities covered up for it.

For me, he's unmistakably a "hero" who can't lose to the heroes.

The necktie is the same as Kotetsu's tie, with a stripe in the middle. In Yuri's case, it is a jagged design. It's white and black with the centre grey to indicate his stance, shown from his character in the previous installment (S1).

ユーリは、「The Rising」では、新規デザインがなかったので、自分も楽しみでした。とはいえ職業柄、スーツ姿には変わりないので、遊べるところが少ないのですが、探は、ゲーム「ASTRAL CHAIN』で探いた四角いデザインを取り入れて、探えて、ボタンも四角くしています。

I was looking forward to the "The Rising" because there was no new design for Yuri. However, because of his occupation, he doesn't change his suit, so there were few places to play. So I incorporated the square design used in the game "ASTRAL CHAIN", and also used it for his buttons.

千葉 僕もキャラクターではないのですが、ルナティックのボウガンが良いなと。必殺技で「炎」は定番だと思うんですけど、その炎をボウガンで撃ち出すというアイデアが画期的でめちゃくちゃカッコいいなと思いました。

Chiba: I'm not interested in characters either (TN: Morita says earlier that he's not interested in characters), but Lunatic's bowgun is good. I think "flames" are standard special moves, but the idea of shooting flames with a bow gun was ground-breaking and incredibly cool.

edit: Turns out Okumura isn't as bad as I thought, annoyingly since I still hate him very much. The localisation says that he's responsible for most of the mental shutdowns (which, ???).

This turns out to be a little inaccurate. Okumura is not responsible for most of the shutdowns, but for most of the "odd suspicious cases that aren't accidents or illnesses" that Sae was investigating—presumably things like the naked guy at Wild Duck Burger:
