What if Nathaniel’s flight lands in California. He used the last of his connections to pull Andrew’s records from foster care - he can’t be mad about the invasion of privacy if he’s been dead for seven years. The trip to Columbia could be delayed, Nathaniel figured.

He started with the family Andrew was placed in at seven. The story makes national news. Local man found with his throat slit. No witnesses. Investigators report finding a note that read “he said no” staked to the man’s chest. Nathanial continued working his way through the list until every monster from Andrew’s past had been executed. There were no more notes. He didn’t need a calling card, even though he’d never be caught. These killings were child’s play compared to what he did in Japan.

Once he worked through his list, Nathaniel headed to Columbia. He figured Nicky would be in Germany and Aaron finishing up medical school somewhere. The old house would either have been sold or sit vacant. Either way, provided nobody lived in it, he’d break in to see it. To sit in Andrew’s room, to honour the life taken. It wouldn’t wash the blood from his hands. Nothing would. But maybe it would chip away at the hole in his chest.

Andrew was in Columbia when he heard about the death of one of his former foster fathers. He’d been there a week, his stay prolonged by his car needing a trip to the shop to fix a faulty sensor. Andrew had assumed that the Moriyama’s connections to Japan had been severed when they came to America but he was quickly corrected. Two days of research later, he’d discovered that a series of deaths and deals over the past seven years had gradually dented the Moriyama’s power from overseas until their presence in America crumbled completely. Ichirou’s death played only a minor role.

The murder of his foster father only caught his attention because of the note. He said no. Had he harmed more children? He chalked it up to coincidence until other reports started making the news. Networks hadn’t made the connection that the sudden string of deaths were all linked to the foster system, but Andrew could never forget their names. Not when he could feel their hands in the shadows of his mind.

The chance that another person had the same string of families was impossible. It was also impossible that Andrew knew the person responsible; he had never shared the names of the families he was placed in with anyone. Whoever was doing the killing would have had to access his records. If it was connected to him at all. The intrigue was almost enough to motivate Andrew to reach out to Renee and discuss it with her, but he hadn’t spoken with her in over a year.

There was no car in the driveway and the lights were off when Nathaniel arrived at the cousin’s old house. He did a quick walk around the perimeter and decided the odds were good the house would be empty. Still, he picked the lock of the back door in case any late night joggers happened to pass the house.

Andrew was upstairs when he heard the back door creak open. When he was a teenager, he had rusted the hinges of all the doors in the house so he would never be taken by surprise when one opened. He grabbed his knives, not bothering to sheath them, and crept downstairs.

Nathaniel made his way to the kitchen and flicked a light on. At the same time, he heard movement in the hall. He slipped out his throwing knives and readied himself to throw. When he saw blond hair coming around the corner, he faltered. It was only on instinct he managed to dodge the knife thrown his way.

Andrew’s first knife was thrown before he rounded the corner. He heard it bounce of the wall and the sound of someone dodging its path. He whipped around the corner and froze when he saw who stood in the kitchen.

How am I supposed to be normal when I have to wait a whole week for Grover and Annabeth to learn Percy isn’t actually dead and they didn’t just loose another friend who sacrificed themselves to buy them more time and Annabeth didn’t just loose one of the only people who ever cared about her without making her earn it all because she wasn’t able to see he was tricking her and Grover didn’t break his promise to Sally and do you understand me? That after Percy fell Echidna and the chimera would have come after Annabeth and Grover which could only mean one thing and they had to leave the arch believing they failed? How long do you think they had to wait until Percy came out of the river? How long did they sit beside each other, not saying a word because they failed, they failed again and now they have to finish this quest alone?
