The most wonderful time of the year is here - Yuletide Fic Exchange is open for nominations until 9am UTC 20 September!

Yuletide is an annual fic (1000+ words) exchange for rare and obscure fandoms run through this community and through the Archive of Our Own. Many Chinese dramas are eligible to be nominated for Yuletide, so go forth and start by nominating your favourite dramas for Yuletide. Who knows...someone might write a fic for it!

Yuletide 2024 Nominations!

Hello, my dears!

It's the time of year again to nominate the 7KPP characters for Yuletide! For those who are unfamiliar, Yuletide is a yearly fanfiction gift exchange for small fandoms (fewer than 1000 works in English) on AO3, where the fandoms and characters that can be requested are nominated by users. You can find more information about it on the AO3 collection or on their Dreamwidth.

Nominations are currently open, for both fandoms and for characters. 7KPP will definitely be nominated but individual characters to request will also need to be nominated, so we're putting together a list to keep track of which characters have already been nominated, and who we have yet to nominate!

Note that you do not have to participate in the gift exchange itself to nominate, though you do have to have an AO3 account! You also do not have to nominate to participate, so if you're interested in the future, please feel free to hop in and join the fun!

Nominations are open through September 20 at 9 am UTC!

Please reply/reblog this post/message me to let me know who you are nominating and I will update the post accordingly so we can keep as careful track as we can! Also, people who don't have AO3 accounts who want to suggest additional characters to add to the list who I may have forgotten are welcome to!

But for real if the Olympic Spirit knight and the Assassin's Creed/Phantom of the Opera parkor specialist aren't in the Yuletide fic requests this year I'm going to worry 'bout y'all.

No photos of my Yuletide celebration this year. That feels like an accurate representation of my year as a whole since I am normally much better about recording my craft than I have been this year. But also, unlike in past years, what I did yesterday was much more private.

This is the first time (other than 2020) in ten years that I've had a chance to do private things on Yule - in the past, my tiny coven always got together to do a few things and then we all gathered to do a larger Yule bonfire with the greater friend group. For multiple reasons, this didn't happen this year. Although I was bummed to miss people, I was also excited to have time to myself.

I love my group of witchy friends but find that I spend so much time running things and re-explaining or directing that it leaves less time to focus on my own magic. Now that we are past the Solstice, the rest of the year is going to be spent cleaning and decluttering in advance of the new year. Today this begins with a simmer pot that I will then use as the basis for a floor wash. Then, I will work systematically from room to room in my house putting things back into order. This is what works for me to recenter myself and my space.

TLDR: Current Yuletide 2024 card I'm working on. Card idea based on the tale of the Oak & Holly King. The card will be a standard 5x7" and the top illustration panel is for the oak king with a deer loosely based on Red Deer (Cervus elaphus).

The long (rambley version): I've been working on a Yuletide card for this holiday season (2024) that I've had in mind for a few years now - been fighting the anxiety/brain gremlins that love to chant 'you're not ever going to be good enough' despite having more than enough logical evidence to suggest otherwise. But brains - ya know? So just going to give it my best!

I've gotten the blocking for basic illustration done - as seen above.

I also went full ham & created a short verse piece (in iambic pentameter!) based off the tale of the pagan tale of the oak & holly king aka the establishment of the solstices. Which I'm /currently/ pleased with, but I do want to step away from it to see if there are any other tweaks that catch my eye when I look at it next - as there were some lines I wasn't quite pleased with.

Currently I've been working on the front of the card, and fleshing out the top Oak King illustration panel. The imagery is to elicit the feel of the oaken king - greens, golds, warm, solar, oak. I chose to /loosely/ base my illustration off a Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) but have added elements (mainly the tail) from the White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) for floof-factor. :P Hence 'loosely based'. I've included the customary green man in oaken leaves, the sun/solar rays to signify the warmer part of the year. I've already changed the background of this from yellow to red to really warm it up & also bring more of the standard 'seasonal' feel to the piece.

My secondary pannel for the Holly King will feature a Reindeer/Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) - as I feel like many other deer hold the visual significance within western culture as they do when thinking about winter/cold seasons of the year. But I've only gotten the basics blocked in on him atm.
