Maria gave him a look; she knew by now when he was just trying to act tough, but she squeezed his hand anyways.

Another stitch, then another, and then it was done, finally. The doctor smiled at his handiwork, then carefully replaced the blanket.

"Congratulations," he said, rising to his feet. "We're all done! You'll come back in two weeks to have the stitches removed. In the meantime, I'll prescribe you some antibiotics. You can pick up the script as you walk out. It was nice to meet you both. Take care, now."

"...You can cry now, if you want," Maria joked once the doctor left the room.
