The thing about Mu Qing is that a lot of the time we see him, he doesn't have much but he offers all he has and beyond.
All he had were the few cherries he picked at the cost of being beaten and humiliated and called a thief (as the only poor disciple among many rich kids who could have bought those cherries any time they wanted) to give to his mother and yet when the poor children surrounded him he gave those cherries to them.
He had a cursed shackle and yet he was the only one who offered to accompany Xie Lian, Hua Cheng & and Mei Nianqing to Mt. Tonglu. (even though Jun Wu had told him that his friends would assume that he was a traitor and leave him to die and MNQ & Hua Cheng obviously hated him and he thought that XL & FX hated him, too.) He not only had a cursed shackle but burnt hands and feet and injured legs and yet he threw himself in the lava to fight and buy time for XL. He could barely walk but attacked Jun Wu head-on with his Zhanmaodo. The shackle tightened around his hand and it was draining his blood and his spiritual powers were sealed and his injuries and burns weren't healing and he was dangling from a freaking cliff and his hair had nearly touched the lava and yet! Right when MNQ wanted to help him up he asked him to send him further down so he could retrieve XL's sword for him!!
When XL had just saved Mu Qing and Bai Wuxiang dragged him down Ruoye, which earlier was explained wouldn't do pointless things (and when asked by XL to grab onto something firm and reliable grabbed onto FX & MQ after HC) made a lunge for Mu Qing, because it knew that Mu Qing would grab it and maybe could do something to save Xie Lian. And Mu Qing, having just been saved, balancing on a sword on burnt legs in the middle of running lava grabbed onto Ruoye with burnt hands and didn't let go even when he was overpowered and dragged along with Xie Lian.
And for all of these, he never expects anything in return! No gratitude, no credit, no friendship, and no affection. He just does these things because that's the kind of person he is.
He's the kind of person who refuses to recruit child soldiers, he's the kind of person who sees a random lady going through forced abortion and tries to save her and the baby, he's the kind of person who even when he's chased out of the house by a broom by his friends, leaves the rice he brought with them, he's the kind of person who even if he assumes XL threw the clock on him & pretended not to know him on purpose disguises himself and goes to XL's help, he's the kind of person who tries to save FX even when he has a cursed shackle, he's the kind of person who not only doesn't abandon his friends under Jun Wu's threats but goes after them knowing that at every step Jun Wu will try to frame him and as far as he knows, his friends don't trust him or like him and he doesn't even think they're friends. he's the kind of person who couldn't bring himself to steal one golden leaf from the prince who had hundreds of them in the depths of his poverty to help his mother yet doesn't blame XL for trying to steal that one time because he understands, he's the kind of person who claims that "truly, there's no point in being a good person" but still helps every time everywhere he can. He's the one who when he can't do anything, when he's lost his attacking powers after going for Jun Wu all he can think about is XL who is grabbed by Jun Wu and calls out for XL to run even as he throws up blood. He's the god who when he ascends what we hear of his followers are: "General Xuan Zhen is generous and kind!"
Just...Mu Qing and his unfailing kindness!

*THIS IS NOT HUALIAN X READER!!! THESE ARE PARENTAL HEADCANONS
Sorry if it took a minute, and no this doesn't count😙 because you aren't asking me to ship them with a kid. Just parental Headcanons so you're fine🖤🖤
Takes place after book ends
I don't quite remember but I could've sworn Shi Qingxuan was in the human realm by the end of the book because of cough cough beefleaf
Ignore grammar mistakes
____________________________________
When Xie Lian and Hua Cheng find you they immediately take you in.
Well Xie Lian immediately takes you in
He holds you up like a stray cat and asks "Can we please keep him!?"
Hua Cheng can't say no to Xie Lian so he says yes
Hua Cheng quickly warms up to you as well.
He can't not like you. You're a ball of love and all you want is affection and praise
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng try to look into where or what happened to your parents but find nothing
That's fine they'll take care of you!
You're still a human child though so you definitely have some growing to do
Because of this Hua Cheng has started making food
As much as he loves Xie Lian and would eat his food any day, you cannot
Xie Lian loves his domestic male wife though so it's fine.
They love on you a lot
Xie Lian likes to dress you up in fancy clothes and hairpins
He loves taking care of you, brushing your hair and putting you to bed
Xie Lian has never been able to ignore children especially children who remind him of himself or Hua Cheng
Xie Lian takes you up to the heavens sometimes
You've made friends with Feng Xin, and Mu Qing
Feng Xin tries to teach you how to fight and martial arts but Mu Qing won't have it.
He says you're too little to deal with that yet.
Mu Qing didn't have the best childhood so even if your parent is Hua Cheng he absolutely spoils you
In the human realm you've made friends with Shi Qingxuan
You hang around Shi Qingxuan a lot actually
Xie Lian hasn't seen the man happy in such a long time so whenever you need babysat he leaves you with Shi Qingxuan
For your human life and Shi Qingxuan's human life you two will be very close
Hua Cheng will take you around ghost city sometimes
Also sicks you on He Xuan sometimes.
He Xuan pretends to be absolutely tired of you but he does like you
Carries you around and lets you play around in his waters or with the ghost fishies
The ghosts love you, if not more then their Chengzhu
They've taken a liking to calling you Little Chengzhu
While Xie Lian loves you very much, Hua Cheng absolutely spoils you rotten
He'll give you anything you want, and he continues to do so
Even with anything at your fingertips you remain a ball of love and stay humble so Hua Cheng can't help it
You've gained many friends but you've also gained some enemies
You're the adopted kid of the two most powerful men of course you're going to be a target.
Not that you have to worry. Xie Lian or Hua Cheng are always by your side
Hua Cheng will kill for you and has killed for you
🤷
Adopting you has also given them many cute moments
For instance, when you were trying to get Xie Lian's attention once. You had been patting on his legs and tugging softly on his robes
Xie Lian was going to answer you in a moment he really was but he was trying to do something
Immediately pays attention to you when you had called him 'Baba'
Tears up
Is so happy, he picks you up and runs to Hua Cheng.
"Listen San Lang! Tell San Lang what you called me!"
"Baba"
Grins from ear to ear. Xie Lian is so happy with this and even happier when you take up calling Hua Cheng 'Baba' too.
Another cute moment is when you pick up drawing.
You tend to copy your parents and you recently have decided to copy Hua Cheng's artistic practices
You draw them a lot of pictures and they get hung up on the walls of Paradise Manor
They weren't expecting you to have so many of their traits because well- technically you aren't theirs but you've picked up their traits anyways
Like Hua Cheng's bad writing.
Xie Lian immediately puts you in calligraphy lesson with your baba. No way is he going to let that bad writing be a habit
You've taken up Xie Lian's bad cooking.
You like to make "food" with mud, rocks, and twigs.
They find you cute anyways.
You ended up with the best parents
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng love you so much and the plan to be the best parents they can be.

An important part of who Hua Cheng is as a person is that he is all about having people solve their own problems.
He largely just acts as a sort of mediator to create an environment where that's possible. He assists young children that suffered like he did that wish for his help in the revision, but otherwise he is very 'do it yourself.'
Other ghosts like him because he offers them safety and the stories the cultivators tell seems to revolve around just giving safe harbor to ghosts and laughing off what the ghosts do to enact their revenge. And there's typically a give and take; Yin Yu is given a safe place to stay but is his servant. He Xuan is bankrolled by Hua Cheng but also functions as his spy in the heavens. He assisted the chicken and boar spirits and they became his cooks. Even in terms of the gambling den, and the fact Ghost City is nestled on the river that connects the spirit and human worlds. He holds an idea that 'there just needs to be someone to watch over things.' After all, all of this stuff would happen with or without him; he can just provide an environment best suited for maximum safety and peace instead of complete chaos - as long as they don't expect more without providing something back. You need to have something worth obtaining to be able to place a bet, after all.
And this is probably directly from watching Xie Lian; Xie Lian is kind, and is constantly hurt by people because he is selfless to a fault. He gives and gives and gives and people only take, and when he has nothing more to give they abandon or assault or belittle him. Witnessing this so many times over is Hua Cheng's largest trauma. And so he refuses; if people want his assistance, they typically must give something in return. This is why devotees consider him finnicky, and claim he is just as likely to help you as he is to hurt you.
But also. This calls into question the act he did on Mount Tonglu; Risking his own life to save mortals who are doomed to die isn't something that fits into this give and take, just-watch-over-it attitude he has. It feels out of character.
But...
One: The place where Wuming dies is the same area that Xie Lian would visit to let up Yong'an's drought. It is stated that it's the same place. The people there see Xie Lian's face and think that he looks like the Xianle Crown Prince. But they excuse it - they believe Xie Lian went back up to the heavens and wouldn't be here. IE they believe he is still a god. There is a flower in one of his run-down temples that Wuming insists was not left by him. Of all places in Yong'an, this place above all else would be the most likely to still have followers of Xie Lian. People who remember who saved them from dying of thirst.
Two: The one ghost who doesn't seem to have a give-and-take relationship with Hua Cheng is Jian Lan. Jian Lan resides in Ghost City and thanks Hua Cheng for giving her safe harbor. He is not surprised by her change in demeanor when her identity is revealed, and he clearly knows she is the one to take the fetus spirit, and doesn't even get angry about it. He stops Xie Lian from harming her and instead restricts the golden belt that keeps her tethered to this world until she gives up Cuocuo.
And also, when she says 'who else could it be' when Xie Lian asks about the father - it seems that she expects Xie Lian to know, probably because Hua Cheng knows. Because at that point, Jian Lan didn't realize who Xie Lian was; not until they went up to the heavens and Mu Qing called him 'His Highness' did she seem to realize. So Hua Cheng knows who she was and what happened to her and her baby this whole time and was actively sheltering her and didn't even get mad about the 'theft.'
...Jian Lan kept one of His Highness' talismans in Cuocuo's baby clothes. And this isn't just because Feng Xin gave it to her. Jian Lan, when she knows who Xie Lian is, speaks to him with utmost respect. When they speak at the end, she refers to him even more respectfully than anyone else, calling him Your Royal Highness rather than simply Your Highness. She takes the charm he gives her and thanks him. She never once seems to hold animosity toward him. She was a follower. And she, above all else, was the one Jun Wu targeted. And that could very well be why Hua Cheng gave her more leniency; specifically because she's one of Xie Lian's followers, likely the only one other than himself.
Three: Jun Wu is directly theorized by Hua Cheng and the State Preceptor to have brought the fishermen into the ocean during Shi Wudu's tribulations. He can move great amounts of people with ease magically because he is the emperor of the heavens and worshiped across the land. Mount Tonglu is his domain. And the State Preceptor even says it is strange, that all those humans that Wuming protected were there; that they seemed to appear randomly.
So I really think...
That Hua Cheng did not save those mortals out of uncharacteristic selflessness, even after witnessing Xie Lian get torn apart again and again by people who take but don't give.
That instead, Jun Wu was trying to exterminate all of the remaining followers Xie Lian had. He shoveled those from Yong'an, the barely-clinging-to-life Wuming included, into Mount Tonglu to be devoured by ghosts. He continued this trend elsewhere, such as picking a prostitute that worshiped Xie Lian to kill in a ritual to make her unborn fetus his thrall.
Hua Cheng wasn't simply being selfless. He was stubbornly refusing to let the last of Xie Lian's followers be slaughtered.

Finding home
This can be read as a part 2 to this ficlet and the fic for this poll
Flute song echoed through Ghost City, a delicate melody weaving through the hustle and bustle of the restless spirit dwelling. The song carried something soft with it, soft and aching, a longing in unspoken lyrics and languid notes, calling onto something lost before it had ever come to exist.
For little over a decade, the ghosts inhabiting the city had become used to the song carrying through the streets, calling onto them in a strange, melancholic way - and it was that pull, that gentle calling, that had even the master of the city, the feared Crimson Rain Sought Flower, wanting to find its source.
Thirteen years ago, Hua Cheng had found Wei Wuxian gazing into the dark, distant mountains as he played his flute atop an obsidian rock, the lights of the city casting soft shadows on his pale face. The song flowed out smoothly through the ghostly flute, betraying skill, and the half-lidded, distant gaze of its musician spoke of a longing that Hua Cheng had become too familiar of.
They hadn't talked that day, but Hua Cheng had Yin Yu find out who the mysterious new visitor to his city was - and so he learned of the tale of the Yiling Patriarch, of his death but most importantly, of his life.
Not too long after, Hua Cheng had also learned of what Wei Wuxian had left behind - or, rather, who, a man in mourning robes, red seeping from hastily tied bandages on his back and a question Hua Cheng hadn't been permitted to answer honestly.
But, despite the tragic manner that he had passed, Wei Wuxian had adjusted to life in the ghost realm easily - worryingly so. But he had told Hua Cheng, in a light, casual tone, that he had grown more comfortable being around the dead than the living, that he himself had been dead long before his soul separated from his body.
(It was rather uncanny how some people could drop such things casually in conversation - one would think Hua Cheng would grow used to it, as Xie Lian also used to do it, casually relaying the most shocking tidbits of information that had Hua Cheng's soul shiver with pain and revolt...
He had thought, as he heard Wei Wuxian's words, that he and Xie Lian would get along swimmingly - and they did, however Hua Cheng could not listen to their conversations sometimes, not as they were telling their life stories to each other in traumatic detail, sharing experiences over tea like it was the most natural thing).
Yet, Hua Cheng had found it peculiar how, despite Wei Wuxian's history, he carried no resentment or hate, his spirit calm and gentle as a summer's breeze. Whispers in Ghost City spoke of the man clad in red and black with a flute hanging to his waist, of how he played with the ghost children and sang them songs, how he haggled with vendors for items in the markets or how he calmed the restless with his song, played on an imitation of the one he used while he was living.
It had become a common sight to see Wei Wuxian carry little ghosts on his shoulders or teach riddles to the child spirits, telling them outlandish stories of his life and weaving them little dolls from straws - so much so that many called him Uncle Wei and followed him around, asking to be taught to play the flute, wield the sword or even control ghosts.
Sometimes he visited the Gambler's Den as well, but, though his luck was decent (not as bad as one would have expected considering the circumstances of his life), his victories came more often from annoying his opponents into making silly mistakes rather than his own skill. Surely, this could be argued as a skill in itself, and when he took the game more seriously (sometimes playing on behalf of those that were about to lose precious things), he was cunning and ruthless, to the point that many refused to play with him at all.
(Hua Cheng had wanted to, but Xie Lian had not let him, no matter how sweetly he had tried to talk him into it, and how much Wei Wuxian himself had asked. It would not have ended well, and so the two had to listen to his highness, though grumbling like children about it).
But when he was not playing uncle to ghost children, terrorizing the vendors in the markets or trying his luck in the Gambler's Den, Wei Wuxian was playing his mysterious song, perched atop the obsidian rock, eyes distant, searching for something he did not even know in the darkness of moonless nights.
It had been during one such evening that Xie Lian had joined him. It was often Hua Cheng that did, something in his ghostly nature pulling him towards the song - or, at least, that was what he said happened. (In truth, it was the message of it, the yearning etched in every note that reminded him of centuries of waiting, of praying, of searching for the one that he had loved beyond the laws of reincarnation.)
Xie Lian listened quietly, his hand idly reaching to play with the diamond ring hanging around his neck. Hua Cheng had told him - of the man dressed in white that came looking for Wei Wuxian, of Wei Wuxian's refusal to see him, of the devastated look on the other's face when Hua Cheng had to lie to him.
It seemed like there was much Wei Wuxian had not known when he was alive. Xie Lian could not judge him, as he had not known either, and his heart had gone through much unnecessary torment before he realized it. Still, he could not help but feel sorry for Wei Wuxian, for the way his fate had played out and even more so for the fact that his good heart remained intact in spite of everything that had happened.
They were a lot alike in that regard, if he thought about it.
Wei Wuxian's song neared its end, the notes slowly ebbing into silence as he withdrew the flute from his lips, breathing more by force of habit than need.
Ghosts do not breathe.
"What's the name of this song, Wei-xiong?" Xie Lian asked him, his voice soft, "You always play it."
Wei Wuxian stared at his hand as he idly twirled the flute around his fingers, the grey of his eyes storming with emotion. "...I do not know, Your Highness. It isn't my song. I don't even remember where I heard it..."
Xie Lian's gaze softened further, much like a father looking fondly at his young child discovering the novelties of the world.
"But then again..." Wei Wuxian sighed, a small, though slightly bitter, smile on his lips, "...I don't remember much these days anyway."
"Sometimes it's better that way." Xie Lian added, an attempt at comfort. Wei Wuxian did not reply, instead staring up at the sky.
Onto the pitch black canvas of midnight, there appeared a small, glittering red flame, slithering up towards the heavens, carried by gentle winds. Another followed it, and another, and another...
"I wonder how many lanterns Hua Chengzhu will light for you this year." Wei Wuxian spoke as the many golden lights raised to the sky by the hundreds. "What was it last year, five thousand?"
"Six." Xie Lian corrected, eyes lovingly gazing at the sky. "Before long, I think he will light me ten thousand. There will be more lanterns than stars in the sky..."
Wei Wuxian watched the sky awash with fire and devotion, and for a moment, there was a name on his lips, a figure before his eyes, somebody he would have liked to share the beautiful sight with.
But it disappeared as soon as it had taken shape, and Wei Wuxian felt compelled to play that song again.
--
Somewhere in the Cloud Recesses, a lantern was lit.

Day 6
Curses
De aged
For Yin Yu Appreciation Week
Sorry this is late!
_____________________
Yin Yu is sure he is dreaming. He blinks, once, twice then pinches his arm.
No. Not a dream. Xie Lian is a child. Hua Chengzhu is a child.
The two were walking arm in arm along one of the walkways that lined the lake that Paradise Manor dwelled alongside. Yin Yu had needed Hua Chengzhu's input on a time sensitive request so he had approached them, offered the usual greetings to the pair, then with a poof they were enveloped in smoke that smelled strongly of incense.
When the smoke cleared where two adult men stood were now two children.
Xie Lian raised his arm to observe his little fingers when he wriggled them. “Oh, dear.” He sighed. His voice had the higher pitch of a child's. Ruoye snaked its way out of the now too many folds of robes enveloping them and tilted an end of itself inquisitively towards Xie Lian who smiled in confusion at the silk. “San Lang?” He asked his husband, turning towards him.
When he came face to face with child Hua Cheng, Yin Yu observed Xie Lian go through a myriad of emotions: surprise, confusion, concern, elation, affection, adoration; love.
“This one is fine, Gege.” Hua Cheng replied to the unasked question.
Xie Lian stumbled over his loose robes and held Hua Cheng's face between his hands. “San Lang in this form is always adorable!” He cooed.
“Gege as a child is the cutest,” Hua Cheng corrected.
Yin Yu coughed lightly to get the attention of the two. Xie Lian seemed surprised that they had an audience, while Hua Cheng glared at the interruption.
Yin Yu had to admit, the effect was not as frightening as Hua Cheng’s adult version.
He cleared his throat. “This is unexpected,” he deadpanned. “Chengzhu, Taizi Dianxia, is this one correct in assuming that despite your size your minds are still your own?”
Xie Lian smiled and Hua Cheng rolled his eye, “Obviously.”
“While I can't speak for San Lang,” Xie Lian said. “My mind has not reverted to that of a child's.” Ignoring Hua Cheng’s whined “Gege” Xie Lian continued, deep in thought. “I returned two days ago after going on a short trip collecting scraps, and while most of my finds were delightful little treasures, none of them would be considered unique. And neither could I say that I came across anything untoward or unusual during my travels.”
“Before you turned, well, small, you were both covered in a cloud of smoke smelling strongly of incense,” Yin Yu offered. “Something that smells of orchids and cassia.”
Hua Cheng unfolded his arms with a look of realisation. He took one of Xie Lian’s hands in his. “There was something usual that Gege brought back with him,” he said. “That strange little incense burner. We used it last night when we went to sleep.”
“Of course!” Xie Lian exclaimed. “What did the nice old lady tell me, again? ‘When you burn incense in this censer you will dream childish dreams filled with laughter and fun’. She wasn't malicious so I let my guard down.” He said apologetically.
Yin Yu immediately offered his services to track her down.
“Taizi Dianxia, Chengzhu, please allow this one to find her, to find out if there is a way to reverse what has been done to you and Chengzhu.” He cupped his hands in front of himself and bowed.
Xie Lian acquiesced and told Yin Yu of the village from where he received the incense burner. As he turned away from them, Yin Yu overheard Hua Cheng whisper to Xie Lian, “This is a rare opportunity for me Gege, and I plan to take full advantage.” Xie Lian giggled in response.
Yin Yu couldn't get away quick enough.
His journey to the village called Whispering Pines was uneventful.
He found the old lady, a bent backed, sleepy eyed, wrinkly skinned, twisted fingered old thing, who, as His Highness described, was easy to let your guard down while around her. When he told her of what had transpired her eyes widened.
“Oh dear!” she exclaimed. “Now that won't do! The censer was only meant to make them children in their dream worlds. But if that pleasant young man was a god, that might explain why dream became reality.”
“Are you saying that His Highness did this, by accident?” Yin Yu frowned.
The old lady nodded. “The censer reacts to the sleepers' childish desires, and usually manifests them into dreams. For normal, mundane people that is. He must have desired, so strongly in his subconscious, to be a child with his husband in the waking world, that the censer consumed some of his power to make it a reality.”
“Hn,” Yin Yu allowed a small sigh to escape, relieved that it was nothing untoward, or malicious. “Do you know how long this will last?”
The old lady tapped her chin thoughtfully with a gnarled finger. “I do not,” she said slowly. “As this has never happened before, I can only guess that, so long as they don't use the censer, the effects should fade over time.” She held up a crooked finger, hand shaking. “As long as they stop using it,” she warned.
Yin Yu bought her a bowl of congee as thanks before journeying back to Ghost City with the news.
When he arrived at Paradise Manor looking for Hua Cheng and Xie Lian, some servants pointed him to the eastern garden. Speaking through their giggles and too wide smiles they informed him that “Chengzhu and his beloved husband have had the most delightful time playing together. You shall find them at the swing, my lord.”
Sure enough childish laughter could be heard as Yin Yu reached the garden. Cries of “Higher! Higher, San Lang!” made its way across the grounds. He followed the noise to see two children at play.
The one dressed richly in red and black was standing behind a swing upon which sat the source of all the laughter. The young prince of Xianle garbed in only the finest of clothing, in shades of pinks, creams and golds, held on tightly to the ropes of the swing while the one behind him pushed him even higher.
It was a sweet sight. And Yin Yu wanted to observe from the shadows while the children played. But the job came first. He approached with heavy footfalls to announce his approach.
Xie Lian spotted him first when he was at the highest point of his swing. With a cry of “Yin Yu is back!” He pushed himself from the seat, launching himself into the air laughing in delight as he did so. Yin Yu involuntarily took a step forward, arms raised to catch the child as gravity took effect and Xie Lian fell back to earth.
With feet firmly on the ground once more, Xie Lian thanked Yin Yu for catching him while he straightened his rumpled clothing.
“Well?” Hua Chengzhu asked brusquely as he approached crossing his small arms.
Yin Yu bowed and gave his report. When he was finished Xie Lian sighed in relief. "Well, that's good,” he said. “Though it has been very fun playing with San Lang these past few days.” He sighed whimsically. “I'll almost be sad when it's all over.”
“Don't be, Gege,” Hua Cheng reassured him. “We know how it works now, so if we wish to indulge ourselves similarly in the future we can.”
“Yes,” Yin Yu offered dryly, “the servants seemed to enjoy themselves immensely at Chengzhu and His Highness’s expense.”
Hua Cheng narrowed his eye at Yin Yu. “You are dismissed Waning Moon Officer,” he said curtly.
Yin Yu bowed again at the pair taking his leave. He wondered how long it would take for them to revert to their adult selves. It has already been eight days since they turned, after all.
Two days later he got his answer when he nearly walked in on the pair during their love making, their very adult moans making him about face and walk very quickly back the way he had come.
Three days after that Yin Yu had childish dreams. He was climbing trees, and swimming, and learning Martial Arts, and eating yummy foods. He was laughing and smiling. He could smell incense burning.
When he woke up the following morning the first thing he saw was the censer on the table in the middle of his room. It was shaped like a strange beast, with big ears like an elephant, antlers like a deer, a face like a stoat, and legs tucked under it like a cat.
He had thought that it was safely tucked away in storage. He sighed, got dressed for the day then put the censer back into storage. Only Chengzhu could sneak into his room without alerting him.
He hoped he didn't change into a child like Chengzhu and His Highness did.
Yin Yu's wish was denied however, when with a poof of sound and smoke he found himself looking up at Hua Chengzhu's suddenly taller figure. He raised his arms and found that he was practically swimming in his clothes. He lowered them and sighed. “Oh dear,” he said with a higher pitched voice, echoing Xie Lian’s words. He noticed Hua Cheng’s unsurprised, satisfied, smile. “Chengzhu, did you feed the censer spiritual powers with the intention of turning me into a child? If I may ask, to what purpose?”
“Oh, there's no purpose,” came the reply. “Not really. It may have been suggested to me by someone who was curious to see you as a child. And I obliged. That is all.”
“Oh.”
This was going to be a long ten days for Yin Yu.

A cavalcade of secrets are revealed in the aftermath, and three battered hearts have to choose who to give their trust, their loyalty and their love.
(They've already give it. All of them. They just need to realise how much so).
once more with feeling by sometimesiship
(explicit)
Twilight has two simple rules: No unnecessary touching and no unnecessary lying. They've gotten him through the cognitive dissonance that playing house creates, and finally, after four years, peace between Ostania and Westalis is within reach. He just has to kill one man—a man guarded by none other than Thorn Princess.
But when identities are revealed and loyalties come to light, the rules no longer apply. As all three Forgers navigate the minefield that their home life has become, the line between Twilight and Loid begins to blur, begging the question: if your fake wife is the final boss and your pretend daughter knows your every thought, is peace even an option?
Oh, and don't forget about the damn dog.

He doesn’t let He Xuan change forms, but he does allow him to wear a mask as they make their way around town. But Hua Cheng knows.

+ He Xuan!!
Pei Ming allows himself to be pulled around by these strange ghosts, watching as the red-clad ghost - fine, Hua Cheng - builds his own city and makes a name for himself. He, unfortunately, finds himself actually enjoying the young ghost's company, guiding him along and teaching him to fight (he doesn't think he has much to teach him, until he watches him fight. Oh, and that atrocious handwriting must be sorted).
He helps look after the children that refused to leave, learning not to make a scene when one of them curls into his bed at night - too scared to go to Hua Cheng, but desperate for comfort after a nightmare. He listens to Hua Cheng speak of the Crown Prince with reverence in his tone, the love so obvious in his tone that it makes Pei Ming feel as if he is third wheeling despite there not even being a couple there.
He still visits Yushi Huang, listening to her speak of love of her own, smiling the whole time and wondering if he could ever feel a feeling that beautiful. He doubts it. Instead, he throws himself into helping out the young Ghost King, comforting and yet strong as people fade or choose to go. When Shuo loses his brother, Pei Ming holds him close, refusing to let him suffer alone when Hua Cheng goes utterly feral at the news.
He likes the young ghost. He's intelligent and cocky - much like another ghost that Shuo looks up to, but Pei Ming learns not to point that out. When Hua Cheng decides to fight thirty three gods for some reason or another, Pei Ming doesn't question it, nor is he concerned. Let the boy vent his anger, it's good for him to get out and make a name for himself.
He doesn't admit it, but he begins to see the feared Ghost King as a son. He can't explain why. Maybe it's the way Hua Cheng begrudgingly comes to him for help when there are things that even he doesn't understand. Maybe it's the comfort the ghost seeks at his most vulnerable. Hell, maybe it's the way Hua Cheng is so close to taking him down that he's almost desperate for it to happen.
And then Mount Tonglu opens again. He refuses to be around the others when it is opening, isolating himself in his home until he can't ignore the urge to go. He finds Hua Cheng is already there, and he watches. Again. He has gotten quite good at it, over the centuries of his existence. When he is called back to the kiln, he doesn't even complain; he's intrigued by this ravenous ghost, and Hua Cheng seems to know more than he should about him.
When he learns...he is hit with that familiar feeling of sympathy. Watching Hua Cheng's memories again remind him of his hatred for the emperor, but the drowned ghost reminds him how evil and cruel humans themselves can be. He finds himself feeling most weary of the ghost - intelligent people are a threat, but intelligent people with nothing to lose are downright deadly. Despite this, he watches the ghost manage to consume Zhao Beitong, despite his prior opinion that it wouldn't happen.
It's irritating, because He Xuan is so focused on gaining revenge that Pei Ming should find him irritable at best, but...the water ghost can play a good game of cards. Better than Hua Cheng - there's no fun in playing with someone who has incredible luck. He admires how He Xuan cares for the memory of his family; he knew the feeling of watching one's family die. Fuck, he shouldn't have taught Hua Cheng, because now, when he watches He Xuan struggle to get a hold of his breathing, he feels the need to teach him how to live as a ghost. Along with fighting skills that go beyond biting, scratching and hacking, no matter how effective they are.
He swears to god that he doesn't even realise he's started seeing He Xuan as his son until he finds himself thinking about what the ghost would like for his birthday. Not until he has already bought He Xuan a pet. It's embarrassing, honestly. Pei Ming needs to get a hobby that goes beyond adopting grown men as sons.
TCGF/NPAB AU where Pei Ming actually dies in his final fight as a mortal. Not against Rong Guang, but against Jun Wu, just after his ascension. In my personal headcanon, a god is a bit weaker and not fully immortal after they've just ascended, considering that this is a completely new form and they're caught off guard, so Jun Wu - trying to eliminate a threat before it becomes an issue - gets him while he's down. So, Pei Ming dies.
Of course, he comes back. Dead and kicking, like a vicious little ghost. Instead of Hua Cheng being the next Ghost King after the White Clothed Calamity, Pei Ming takes on that role (haven't decided a fancy title yet). Zhao Beitong may see a son in him, but she sees a warrior. He is the first ghost who refuses to forget her. He stares her dead in the eyes and downright refuses to be consumed so that he cannot forget her. Even if he forgets her name, he will not forget her. She is such a brave warrior, the only martial god he would ever respect. He is a general, and he kneels to her.
He's not really all about that Revenge Lifestyle™ and ends up hanging around Gusu, the site of his ascension, listening to the tales spun of the General who never wanted to be a God, the one who spurned his Godhood and now wanders, looking for someone worthy enough to fight him.
After Mount Tonglu, he just kinda hangs around, reconnecting with Yushi Huang earlier on because, welp, he's dead, the worst she can do is kill him again. He has no idea what the hell happened to his ashes (Jun Wu thought he scattered to them, but a certain Heavenly Official watched this mess occur and caused a massive distraction that allowed her to replace the body with a duplicate) and frankly, he doesn't really care. He's just waiting for something interesting to happen (preferably for the Heavens to crash to the ground, but he's not picky).
Because he ascended before death, he can still receive prayers after death. People speak of the General who spurned godhood, but one who still helps out those who beg for it, becoming a terror to those within his own realm. Ghosts fear him just as much as the gods who hunt them, and he is perfectly content with that. He never touches a sword after his death. He lives peacefully, learning to fight with other weapons, making his own armour and practicing just...living. Ironic that he had to die to learn how to do such a thing. He doesn't get involved with anything.
He listens to the rumours of the God-Pleasing Crown Prince from Xianle, sympathy seeping through him as everyone talks of the awe-inspiring legend, being one of the only people to see it as it really is: a soon to be tragedy. That doesn't stop the sympathy from crawling through him at the tales of how Xianle has been hit with a terrible plague along with a war, how the Crown Prince descends from the heavens to help his country, and the eventual demise of his kingdom. The tales of the White Clothed Calamity. The Crown Prince being banished from the heavens without his sight.
It all makes him feel sympathy for the Crown Prince, especially when less-savoury rumours begin to emerge. He doesn't think about them much. He stops paying attention to any sorts of rumours or stories after that.
Until Mount Tonglu. He, of course, has to go to it, because of the literal everything that goes on. When he watches Zhao Beitong coach a red-clad ghost, watching at a distance and not getting involved until she notices him. They share a look, and he just nods, beginning his journey into the kiln - one that he took before, but accidentally. He does allow himself to farm a few of the wandering souls, because he's allowed a treat sometimes, but he just sits by the doors, waiting for them to open.
He waits for a while. He speaks to Zhao Beitong occasionally. She seems pleased that he has reconnected with Yushi Huang. Apart from that, he doesn't really do much, just kills particularly irritating ghosts. When the kiln opens, he darts inside, not going out of his way to fight the ghost, mainly just watching. Even when the young man notices him, he just watches. Until they fall into memories.
There's no real surprise that the ghost manages to consume Zhao Beitong, but not before she makes him promise to make Pei Ming teach him anything she can't (surprisingly, there are things). When they exit the kiln, Pei Ming is surprised to find a group of child spirits waiting for the red-clad ghost to return. When they notice Pei Ming, he doesn't make any attempt to appear scary - he is quite intimidating as it is. The red ghost looking for his god turns and asks for him to teach him everything.
Pei Ming disagrees.
So, of course, he is absolutely fucking pestered by the ghost (who, despite being strong, cannot really fight against someone at least two hundred years older than him), until he is actually charmed into agreeing - by the child spirit with multicoloured eyes, not by the ghost.
(This was not supposed to be this adapted, just wait 'till He Xuan comes along)

If I had a job in the MXTX universe, it would be going around telling different characters that what happened to them was not their fault. I can't believe I'm saying this but even fucking Qi Rong. "Child, it's not your fault no one loved you, but at least you had Guzi." Because love is correction and no one dared correct Qi Rong. Even Hua Cheng had his moments where he was really strict with Xie Lian, making him promise not to hurt himself anymore and also not letting him interrupt when Lang Qianqiu was learning the truth.
Yeah, Xie Lian might have, should have, treated Qi Rong more like a person and less like a chore but the kid was what? 17? We can't all be Lan Xichen who started father duties at age 9. Raising children is hard. Especially violent angry children like Qi Rong. It was not Xie Lian's job to raise that child, but someone definitely should have stepped in to raise Qi Rong.

... You know, I was just thinking about Hua Mulan ChengQing AU. Hahah, ha. This movie is SOMETHING. Handkerchiefs are necessary.
oh I HEARD? but idk if i wanna see it. I’ve seen other things Liu Yifei (Mulan) was in and i don’t really like her?
NOTE: OKAY so there were some confusion!!! Before ppl get offended, anon and I are taking about two different movies. The one that anon is saying is good is Mulan (2009) an original Chinese movie BC I had been asking ppl where to watch it and received many inbox msgs about it. The Disney film is what I won't be watching for so many reasons, including bc I know the actress's work and is just unimpressed by her in general on top of all the other reasons.
Oh boy, but like...what IF it’s reverse!Mulan, aka matriarchal society. Where Jiang Cheng is the “sneak into the army for my family c”!Mulan and Wen Qing is the “I wanted to be a doctor but then the Fire Nation exploded in on itself”!Shang. And I worldbuilded for no reason...

WEN QING
Wen Ruohan was never supposed to be the Emperor, Wen Qing’s mother once told her, but the imperial court had allowed him to inherit because his late Empress Mother had no daughters to inherit the throne. As long as WRH promised to father daughters and pass on through them, then the Wen dynasty legacy would be preserved.
“What did his wife say, that her children must take his last name?” Wen Qing had asked her mother, wide eyed and curious. Her mother had shrugged and said, “Well some women don’t mind, I guess, especially if it meant her children would be heiress of the throne.”
Wen Qing had frowned at that. What’s so bad about children taking their father’s name, she wondered. Men may not be allowed the same liberties as women, may not attend public school or join the army or hold court with the Empress, but they were still children’s parents. Not all women agreed on this of course, but that was the way of their world.
Her father died of consumption some years after Wen Ning was born, but Mother never took a second husband or a concubine. Wen Qing liked that about her mother. Brave, loyal, true.
Wen Qing’s mother, Dafan-junwang, a distant relation to the throne, was a renowned marshal, hailing from a proud line of generals and marshals, trusted by the Wen imperial family as protectors of the realm, without fear of usurpation. The people whispered that Wen Qing had much to live up to, if she were to inherit her mother’s duchy and hold a command of her own.
Wen Qing never had much interest in war or martial arts, but she learned, trained, practiced and perfected her skills because she could never bear the thought of letting her mother down. In her heart (and in her free time), she learned the science and art known by father. He was a quiet man, a physician (quite skilled too), before he married her mother. He wasn’t what her grandparents would have wanted for their daughter, but Mother had been adamant.
Wen Qing’s mother hadn’t been good at expressing her love, but she did love her husband. Very much. Mother was only ever soft around Father, and Wen Qing only knew this because shed seen them hold hands when they thought no one was watching.
Wen Ning, being the son of a wealthy aristocratic family, was destined to marry well when he came of age. Unlike girls, boys weren’t allowed to attend publicly funded scholarly schools or martial academies. Wealthy and noble families however were able to afford private tutors for their sons, so that they would know the four arts (play the qin, weiqi, literature, and art) and be elegant, competent husbands for their wives. If Wen Ning was competent enough, charming enough, and gave his wife daughters (because everyone knew it’s the men who control the sex of the baby), then she would be faithful to him -> at least that’s what their nanny said.
“How did they know, that men determined the sex of the baby?” Wen Qing asked her mother one evening when she turned thirteen and was given The Talk.
Her mother tilted her head and said as if it was the most obvious answer in the world. “My dear, women are the earth, we grow and birth life. Men are like the seeds. If you plant an apricot tree, the earth will nourish it and let it flourish, but the fruit will always be apricots, you will never have peaches.”
Once, Wen Qing had asked her mother if she could be a physician instead, if Wen Ning could take her place as general. Her mother had given her a very stern look and said, “No only is your brother of a sickly disposition, but you are my daughter. The duchy and my command can only be inherited by you. For your country, you do not have a choice.”
Wen Qing conceded, because she was good.
The days dragged on, and slowly it was becoming clear Wen Ruohan would have no daughters. Not only so, the sons he fathered were ill-mannered and haughty, unfit to rule. Wen Ruohan’s mind, too, was slowly leaving him, due to unknown reasons. The ministers of the court and notabilities of the peerage urged Wen Ruohan to take on the daughter of his cousin born of his maternal aunt, and to groom her as heir. This brought on much discontent from Wen Roohan’s two princes, who aligned themselves with lurking enemies from the north, and before anyone could mitigate the situation, the country was thrust into a full blown civil war.
Every bit her mother’s daughter, Wen Qing did not hesitate to mount her horse and ride off into battle. She had her duties and she would serve until her death.
Jiang Wanyin had a very pretty face - she would reflect in retrospect. Perhaps that was why she believed him when he showed up at her camp with a conscription missive claiming to be his older sister Jiang Yanli.
JIANG CHENG
The Jiang family was a wealthy merchant family situated southeast of the capital, in the province of Yunmeng. The current head of family is Jiang Ziyuan, known for her sharp business mind and sharp ways with her sword.
(the only reason i’m switching Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan’s last name is because it’s a matriarchal society, and Yu Cheng and Yu Yanli sounds way too awful as names, but Yu Fengmian and Jiang Ziyuan are actually not bad.)
There was a rumour that her husband Yu Fengmian of a Meishan Yu clan, had betrayed her with a wandering traveler from the pugilist world named Cangse...something something, and that he had fathered a son with her out of wedlock. If it were true, then by the conventions of the land, Jiang Ziyuan would have every legal right to divorce Yu Fengmian and send him back to his family to live out the rest of his days in seclusion, shame and repentance.
But when Yu Fengmian came to her with the little Wei Ying, freshly orphaned, Yu Ziyuan turned the boy this way and that, examined him for “abnormalities” and nodded. Then she summoned her son, and said to him, “Our manor purchased some new indentured servants. This boys is yours from now on, he is your responsibility. Keep him in line, find some uses for him, or get rid of him.”
Jiang Cheng looked to his big sister, but his sister just shook her head. Not quite understanding what was happening, or why his father was bowed down on the floor, Jiang Cheng took his new “servant” and left.
Watching them go, Jiang Yanli then turned to her mother and said, “Muqin, if I may be so bold, I have an idea.”
Jiang Yanli was not the heiress that Jiang Ziyuan had hoped for. Though incredibly intelligent, Jiang Yanli was of poor health and not suited for martial training. Jiang Ziyuan had been quite troubled by this for some time, fearing others would cause trouble once Jiang Yanli inherits. However, she was also hesitant to train her son Jiang Cheng, even though he showed both interest and aptitude. It was not often that well to do families would want to take on a too “rambunctious” boy as groom for their daughters. Yet to leave Jiang Yanli without close protection...
“Are you thinking that boy...”
Jiang Yanli nodded. “Father denies being Wei Ying’s paternal parent, but surely tongues will waggle regardless. Mother, you are within your right to dismiss father, but he is still my father, and if not for me, think of A-Cheng. One day he will marry, and what family would want a son with a disgraced sire. Wei Ying looks healthy and strong; as I am unfortunately unable to train with the sword, mother may yet train him. Surely you’re not worried about his future marriage prospects. Perhaps it is better yet that he never marries, for he will remain close to Lotus Pier and serve at my side.”
Jiang Ziyuan listened to Jiang Yanli’s words and decided that her daughter made very valid points. Her relationship with her husband could never be repaired but she had her children’s future to consider.
And yet happiness would not last for long. Two months after Jiang Yanli’s sixteenth’s birthday, she received news that her mother’s private boat, which she used to inspect her properties, had capsized in a terrible monsoon storm, killing everyone on board.
After the news reached Lotus Pier, Yu Fengmian took his own life in the dead of night, leaving a letter stating that he had owed Jiang Ziyuan too much to repay, that though Wei Ying was not his son, he had kept secrets from her that he swore he would not reveal in this life. Now that she’s gone, he would keep her company in her journey to the beyond.
The Jiangs mourned, but they survived.
Then when the boys turned seventeen, war broke out over the lands, and the conscription missives arrived demanding one female from every household. Jiang Cheng panicked. Wei Wuxian had been sent to Gusu on business and would not return for some time. The military missive was time sensitive, so Jiang Cheng didn’t have another choice...besides it’s not like A-Jie’s matchmaking attempts for him had been all that successful...he was next to blacklisted anyway after his last debacle with the Qin girl.
Jiang Cheng decided that he could pass as a woman if he dressed properly and redid his hair, but his voice...he'd just have to pretend he could not speak. That way, no one would know.
WQ: “Who are you?”
JC *hands her his letter*
WQ: “Jiang Yanli? The Yunmeng Jiangs? Of Lotus Pier?”
JC: *nods*
Her subordinate, “I didn’t know Jiang Ziyuan’s daughter was mute, they only said she was of poor health.”
-
Luo “Mianmian” Qingyang finds out first.
Mianmian: *GASP and points* You’re a man!
JC: *covers his body* SHH!!! Turn around! Don’t look at me! *turns to look away*
Mianmian: *naked by the river ready for a bath but too shocked to move* but, but, but, how?? How did we not know????
JC: Mianmian - no- Lt. Luo, please don’t tell the Young Marshal! Please, I only came so my sister wouldn’t have to -
MM: Cowardice! It is every woman’s sworn duty to -
JC: My sister is of very delicate health. She won’t survive! She’s my late mother’s only daughter, if she dies... I’m expendable. I don’t mind being cannon fodder, please don’t report me.
-
JC shivering in the snow. “You said you trust Yanli! Why should Wanyin be any different?!”
WQ stood impassively over him with a sword at his neck. Then, she closed her eyes and turned away. “A life for a life. My debt is paid.”
---
JYL: *Proud* “A-Cheng helped secure the future of our nation. The adopted young crown princess was too young to rule without a loyal regent, and Wen Ruohan’s sons colluded with outside forces...it would have been chaos. Millions would have died.”
WWX *teasing* “Sure he brought home a sword, if you ask me he should’ve brought home a wife!”
---
JC, “W-would you like to stay for dinner - ”
WWX: WOULD YOU LIKE TO STAY FOREVER?
JC: Wei Wuxian! She’s regent now, be respectful!”
WQ: Dinner...sounds lovely.

Episode 11
XIAOGE HAHA. He has become a mud monster too. Love Wu Xie’s “ARGH WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN” energy. Though he’s accepted that the disappearing act is part of Xiaoge’s nature, it doesn’t make him any less stressed out every time he derps off. Sometimes you gotta let some of that anxious energy out.
@jaecomments waait this xiaoge really does have such big cat energy!! He disappears despite everyone wanting him to stick around, then when he does show up, he’s like “feed me please” hahaha. classic cat.
Xiaoge really has come a long way. It’s an interesting little thing with him and food - he doesn’t eat much, doesn’t seek food out much, and doesn’t ask for it either. But Wu Xie didn’t forget to leave him some food in his pack! But also, see how this man really is not as stoic as he lets on haha. He dares just lift his hand and ask for food after Wu Xie flipped out haha. I loved Wu Xie’s hands grasping air, like “I wanna wring your neck but not really you know how much I worry about you!! D:<”.
Anyways, back to Pangzi and Panzi’s conversation in the medical tent. Nooo, Panzi, stop raising death flags for yourself omg. Now you know something bad is going to happen to him after that speech (…and I’m still not over Ah Ning). But also interesting point about his character - he throws himself in dangerous situations and is too willing to throw his life away indeed. There’s a lot to unpack there.
This Xiaoge has very nice fingers (and i’m not talking about the weird fake fingers they use for his pointer and middle fingers). Well, that’s like one of the criteria to play Xiaoge aside from the pretty face and ability to do all the stunts isn’t it lol.
Ah, yes, Xiaoge’s tendency to not tell his companions what he’s planning and just throw them off cliffs or into mud in this case. Remember that time he pushed Pangzi off the cliff in TLT2 without saying a word (in the Qinling Sacred Tree arc)? He’s always act first, explain later (...or never). That very gentle face slap though xD.
Now Wu Xie’s like a kid playing in the mud haha.
WU XIE. You complain about Xiaoge not telling you before throwing you in the mud, then proceed to do the same to Pangzi. They are all such CHILDREN lol.
“Xiaoge, why didn’t you tell me earlier” is just their whole life at this point.
XIAOGE SMILED. Still won’t high five, but Wu Xie is happy enough with that in the end haha.
The blind man and the pretty boy lol.
Does this mud really work. Of course, because Xiaoge said it does.
Wu Xie will listen to anything Xiaoge says haha. He trusts him implicitly and always has after all.
Who is Wu Sanxing? Indeed, this man is like the series’ biggest mystery lol.
Wait, Ba Ye was still around back when Wu Xie was little? I don’t think it’s ever revealed what happened to him, or what became of him.
Yeah, Xiao Hua definitely keeps out of trouble and doesn’t need to be rescued as much as Wu Xie haha. You can see why everyone wants to protect Wu Xie, it’s just that he’s as stubborn as his uncle and won’t stop as long as there’s a mystery in front of him to chase.
Look at these two, chilling in the dark with sunglasses on haha.
Hei Yan Jing is great as always lol. Also, Liu Yuning is doing a great job as him. I totally did not expect to see him here, and had no clue what he would be like acting but he’s great.
Uh-oh, Wu Xie lost his vision? Why does this stuff always happen to him lol??
What is going on lol. Why can’t anyone see? Oh, poisonous gas! Of course!
Xiaoge actually got bitten by a snake? Wow. Ha, love Wu Xie’s “wait, Xiaoge’s hurt??” He’ll always latch onto that even if he’s half out of his mind and panic-stricken.
Ah, that’s what the sunglasses were for. Playing dead I see.
I’M ALWAYS LUCKY?? How about the exact opposite?? But it’s ok, we know you’re concerned about Xiaoge. Also, I guess Xiaoge’s magic blood doesn’t work against this venom?
HEY. It’s the first shirtless Xiaoge scene of the drama! It happens every time, except in TLT2 which was a SHAME. Cheng Yi even mentioned it in an interview lol.
Xiaoge, stop staring so intently at Wu Xie lol. He’s so obvious about it.
Oh! Pangzi guessed right with the imposter thing in all his rambling. Xiaoge obviously knows but hasn’t told anyone…
HAHA they’re just using this as an excuse to tease Xiaoge and pinch his cheeks. The fact he’s fine with that (and showering with them) shows you just how far they’ve all come as friends.

moon swings back and forth (but my feelings never change)
“Isn’t the moon beautiful tonight, San Lang?” Xie Lian swings back and forth, back and forth, his hair waving smoothly behind him, his hands holding tightly on the swing to not fall. He looks at Hua Cheng, who stopped swinging only to watch the man next to him. And he smiles, melting Hua Cheng’s heart; it’s always the same, a routine Hua Cheng would never trade for anything in the world.
“It is.” Hua Cheng pushes himself gently with his feet, enjoying the smooth feeling of flying simply through the air. He releases some of his butterflies, and they circle him and Xie Lian, and his husband giggles. “They are so beautiful, San Lang. Every time, I see them, I remember of the first time we met. I remember how I don’t want to forget the feeling of seeing them for the first time.”
The town is quiet, there are no cars passing by, no children playing outside. Just the starry sky and two swinging silhouettes whispering nothings to each other, afraid for the world to hear and steal their story.
“Gege”, says Hua Cheng, leaning back and taking everything in. It’s like it’s always been. A night full of stars and hope and love, full of Xie Lian’s soft voice and beautiful eyes and calloused hands and full just of him. It’s been over 1000 years since they have been married. It’s been 1000 years that Hua Cheng would have for the man standing next to him. “Gege, do you still remember the first time we met.” His voice is small, breathy, almost scared somehow that if he’s too loud, Xie Lian’s memory of him would break and shatter to the ground, a reflection of the stars above.
Xie Lian gives a small laugh and turns in the swing so that he can face Hua Cheng. His hair is pulled up in a ponytail that Hua Cheng insisted on braiding, his featured better highlighted like this. The white light of the night sinks into his skin and Hua Cheng can’t understand how he is so lucky. He died three times for this man, and, however, it still feels like he hasn’t done enough.
“Do you think I could ever forget?” Xie Lian scoots closer looking carefully for any sign of sadness on Hua Cheng’s face. He knows that Hua Cheng sometimes gets like this, nostalgic, but Xie Lian is always there to help him through. He has been for 1000 years and he is going to be for 1000 years more, and forever if Hua Cheng needs it.
“San Lang.” Hua Cheng rises his head and they look into each other’s eyes for the millionth time. There is still so much to discover, so much love left unexplored, love they don’t have time to express. They have forever, but it’s still not enough. “San Lang, I remember everything we did together, I remember how I saved you once and how you saved me then multiple times, I remember how we devoted our lives to each other.” Xie Lian raises his hand and the red string gleams in the moon’s light.
“I would do it again and again for you,” Hua Cheng answers and the prince giggles at the classic response he had already heard so many times. Xie Lian never gets tired of it and neither does Hua Cheng.
Suddenly, Xie Lian gets up and goes over to Hua Cheng, passing through the small cloud of butterflies that gathered around them. “Don’t cry, San Lang,” Xie Lian whispers and reaches his hand out to wipe the tears pooled at Hua Cheng’s eye. Hua Cheng sobs and kisses Xie Lian’s hand gently.
“We’ve been through so much, Gege.” Xie Lian nods. He sometimes feels like this, too. Scared that their relationship will get boring, scared that they will let go of each other at some point and go and live separate lives. Xie Lian knows.
“We have, San Lang. And there are still so many things for us to do. Don’t you worry.”
The moon witnesses their confession again and again. It is just like a guardian that watched over them since the beginning. The moon saw everything. The moon saw Xie Lian’s pain, Hua Cheng’s pain and how they’ve healed each other. She then told the stars. Everyone knows the story of the Crown Prince of Xianle and Crimson Rain Sought Flower.
The stars wait for the two to join them in their glowing eternity.
Xie Lian kisses Hua Cheng, something impregnated in his senses, something so natural to him. Their lips are soft against each other; the stars giggle above them and shine brightly, drowning the two in blue light.
“I am never going to forget you, San Lang, never going to forget a thing about you. How I met you, how you waited for me, how you kiss me, how I kiss you back, never going to forget your love for me and the flame burning inside me.”
Words, words, words, they are not enough. Neither are actions. Xie Lian Can’t show Hua Cheng how much he loves him, there is no way that if he let all of his love out, the world would still survive.
It’s after midnight and the wind blows gently. Hua Cheng and Xie Lian rediscover each other with every breath they share, with every laugh, with every word said quiet enough to keep some secrets away from the moon. Their love blooms and radiates like the stars and it’s going to last forever, they will never get bored.
“San Lang, look.” Xie Lian scoops his lover in his arms and settles on the ground, the swing creaking lightly. “Do you ever get bored of watching the sky?”
Hua Cheng laughs. “Not when I am with you, Gege.”
“It doesn’t matter, San Lang, how much you’ve studied the sky. It’s always changing and also, somehow, still the same. I can see the sky in your eyes. I love it. I love you. I will never get tired of watching over you and finding out new things.” Xie Lian kisses a tear that accidentally escaped Hua Cheng. “Forever until the stars collapse. Let’s meet each other again and again and rediscover just how simply it is to be happy.”
“Forever with you doesn’t sound so long, Gege.”

Since I’m obsessed with babies for my fave couples: let’s discuss babies!
Hualian Edition:
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng start floating around the idea about having children, not in any serious way (they are still pretty early in their marriage and kinda want a bit more time alone together, making up for lost time) just “maybe in the future” kind of talk. XL mentions this to other gods and gets a lot of “you can’t. and even if you could, you shouldn’t” (especially “A ghost can’t create life” and “who knows what it would be!”)
He’s upset by their condemnation and tells Hua Cheng, who is not pleased and suggests they have a child out of spite (and love and desire to have a living example of their love to cherish and care for! But also spite) Xie Lian kinda laughs at first (because it’s so like his husband to do that) but in the end he decided “okay lets try some methods and see what works” because the worst that could happen is that they can’t have children no matter what.
They do.
And there is a bit of disagreement on what surname their child should have, but by the time their daughter is born they have decided her name is San Ming (Three like in San Lang, and Ming as in “life” making it “three lives” referencing XL’s three ascensions, and how HC is on his third life since he died for the second time, but now there are also three of them. Three lives.) It isn’t long before they discover something that actually kinda shocked them...
San Ming is human.
Due to this they put a lot of emphasis on her cultivating, as they don’t want to have to see her grow old and die.
From the instant she’s born she becomes known as Gui Gong Zhu, and that name follows her for the rest of her life. Even into her forays into the human world! (NGL that nickname, coupled with who her father is makes me really tempted to have her pick up demonic cultivation and choose her father’s path, over Papa Xie Lian’s, however atm my idea for her is that she feels like she’s riding on her parents coattails and wants to make a name for herself, and if she became a demonic cultivator...that would only cause her to be forever compared to her father. And while she ADORES him, she doesn’t want to be in his shadow)
#hua cheng#san lang#hualian#xie lian#mpreg#also she is SO SPOILED#HC gives her EVERYTHING#you know those ''buying my pet everything they touch'' videos? that's him as a dad#but it's okay because XL is there to teach her humility#so she's unlikely to be a spoiled brat#...she's got a bit of a haughty streak though#also: now I'm imagining her starting out as a regular cultivator and then something happens#and she starts on the demonic cultivation path#and eventually comes home to Paradise Manor a full fledged demonic cultivator and just...hugs her father#something happened out there in the world and Hua Cheng regrets not knowing what#btw: she's super close to both of them but she was born in Paradise Manor and only rarely left it#she's more familiar with the various shrines and temples than with the Heavenly City#to the shock of no one considering how they reacted to the idea of her#so she's with HC most because XL is BUSY

evidence of a lost past part 2
prev
cw: body image
Drawing in a deep breath, Xie Lian slowly lifts his gaze from his toes up to meet his eyes in the mirror. Jun Wu always said that the foundation of art came from knowing yourself. Knowing what you could or could not do, what would be real and what would be artifice when it moved through you.
He’d turn it into a game, almost, a pop quiz: how many freckles did Xie Lian have, which of his arches was higher than the other, which finger always dipped lower than the rest when he extended his arms. When Xie Lian answered too quickly or made an error, he’d raise one eyebrow in silent question and Xie Lian would always flush, embarrassed by his own mistake. Now, he looks in the mirror and tries to make sense of what he sees.
He’s grown since he left the company, just an inch or so in height, but his shoulders are broader and chest thicker than when he was a seventeen-year-old standing at the barre. His hair’s longer, too, bundled up in messy bun at his nape that will fall out the moment he tries a pirouette. After leaving, after his parents, he’d cut off all his hair one night in a fit of pique. If he was done dancing, then let all of it be done, he’d thought. He’d wanted to scrub away every notion of the life he’d lost out of his identity, remake himself into some new mask and character. In the eight years since then, it’s grown long again and brushes the middle of his back when it’s loose. He rocks back into his heels and then forward onto the balls of his feet, flexing his toes so that the polka dots on the soles peek out. His old head teacher had rules about warm-ups; Jun Wu had guidance. At the school, warm-ups were permitted until pliés as long as they were not overly baggy or distracting. For the girls, they’d been allowed to put on legwarmers in pointe but only for the first three exercises. If you needed warm-ups past that, Master Mei had always said, it meant you were injured and shouldn’t be dancing at all but sitting by the front and resting. Years removed from the studio, Xie Lian could now see that rule for the protection it was: chiding students to check in with their bodies and recognize when they needed to stop pushing and let them rest. Back then, it had seemed the worst kind of weakness to sit by the mirrors at the front of the studio and watch everyone else dance. He can still remember passing by the student lounge between classes one Saturday and catching Jian Lan tucked into a corner of a couch, clutching her ankle like she was holding it together with her hands alone. Once he’d joined the company, when Jun Wu took him under his wing, he’d learned a new side to those rules. “At this level, someone is always watching,” Jun Wu had confided during lunch once. “It’s important to present the best version of yourself.” He hadn’t ever said Xie Lian shouldn’t wear soft socks and ripstop pants, but there had been a quiet disappointment to his expression when Xie Lian mentioned it. It felt less like a reprimand and more like he’d offered Xie Lian something special and lofty, advice a gift chosen specifically for Xie Lian—and Xie Lian had been too young and naïve to appreciate it. He’d stuck with his leggings and tailored white jacket with the gold trim after that. Now, he rolls his shoulders under a t-shirt he got for volunteering a hundred hours one summer and the flannel he’d considered a victory at a dollar fifty. Probably, he should shed them both and face himself fully. Even Master Mei would scold him for trying to dance in such baggy clothing. It was too easy to cheat, to relax his abs and sway his back and hide all sorts of sins. His stomach rolls at the thought, choking up high in his throat. He can’t remember the last time he’d taken his shirt off in front of anyone, and he shies away from doing it now where he’d have to see himself. It’s fine. He’s only messing around. The thought is a foreign one, but he clings to it. He’s not really dancing, not really trying to do anything. He knows he’s not a dancer anymore, that he turned his back on that life eight years ago. He’s just—he’s just fooling around in an empty studio with no one watching. Exhaling, he turns his back to the mirror. There’s a stereo system built into a cabinet, and it only takes a few minutes of fumbling before he gets his phone hooked up and the Spotify commercial blares through the speakers in each corner. Wincing, he spins the volume knob down till it’s almost silent and hunts around for some playlist. “It’s just dancing,” he mumbles to himself as he walks away to the opening strains of some delicate instrumental melody. Just—play. In the center of the room, he settles into a parallel second and closes his eyes, listening. The piano tiptoes through the harmony, delicate soprano notes like tiny silver bells, but over and through it, the strings ache and murmur. He sways to it at first, rolling through the pads of his toes and shifting languidly on his hips. His right arm lifts with the strings, elbow first, and unfurls to the quiet plea of the cello. Collapsing to the left, he brings his body around in a low arc to swing up his left leg to devant, foot flexed. The music is loud enough to wash away thoughts of the past or of anyone walking in. It sweeps around him, cradles his limbs and pulls his body into motion. He thinks fleetingly of Hua Cheng, of the easy way he caught on to each combination and stretched and bent it to his own shapes. Spinning through a pencil turn, he freezes to the side and draws into a balance at the top of his demi-pointe, a precarious perch suspended only by the counterbalance of his extended leg. The last time he danced was in a posh little studio where all the windows looked out over the city. It had mostly catered to children with a few advanced students who were set to fly off to new companies any day. His skin had itched under their curious, disdainful eyes, and his ears had filled with imaginary whispers of what they might think of a him. A failure, Icarus floundering in the sea and thinking he could still kiss the sky with his sodden, melted wings. There is no one watching here. Alone in the studio, he skates across the grey floor and leaps without thinking of falling. When he falls out of a shoulder roll he saw Shi Qingxuan do effortlessly in their class the other week, he drops to his back and laughs, breathless, up at the ceiling. He doesn’t know how many songs have played, but sweat prickles his hairline and sticks his shirt to his back. There’s a pleasant burn in his hips and in the skin of his feet after he kicked his socks off to better feel the floor. Breathing in, he lets the laughter bubble through his chest as he sinks into the familiar marley panel. “Fuck,” he says and then laughs at the sound of it in his voice. Rolling up, he drops his elbows to his knees and leans forward to rake a hand back through his hair and draw out the tie still clinging desperately to the ends it. This time, he braids it back tight against his skull and secures the ends with the ponytail. There was a phrase somewhere in the middle there—a low lunge with weight shifts into a turn—he wants to tease out, play with. He ties off the braid and shrugs out of the flannel that’s starting to get over-warm across his back. Grinning, he pulls himself up and starts again.

count to seventeen and close your eyes
Whumptober 2020 Theme 1: let’s hang out sometime; prompt 2: shackled (loosely)
More specific CW: a small child stabs a guy with the help of his father, pov character gets stabbed a lot, graphic depictions of violence, torture, body horror, major character death, White No-Face’s general creepiness, it’s That Scene from book four except Worse, minor dissociation
Glossary for ppl like my mom who have no idea what any of this is -Xie Lian/dianxia/gege -- the guy getting stabbed a bunch; he’s a disgraced god and the former Crown Prince of XianLe, a fallen kingdom -San Lang/Hua Cheng-- he is a ghost, and is the ghost flame; he’s in love with Xie Lian -White No-Face-- he is also a ghost, and he wears a white half smiling-half crying mask; he’s pretty creepy even when not in strange nightmare territory. -Human face disease-- a disease reminiscent of the chicken pox, but instead of red bumps, it is human faces, and it is deadly if not cured, but there is only one cure *cue croods dun dun dun sound effect* -A’die-- dad, informal -(xiao-)baobei-- (little) treasure; a nickname for small children -Dianxia-- your highness
The first half of this is a nightmare, which becomes progressively more obvious as it goes on, so strange body horror stuff is not editing errors. It is not a rewrite of the temple scene in book four; it is a nightmare about that scene. (though, to be fair, i only went through and edited for grammar, not narrative consistency or flow.)
—start—
Xie Lian sits in the decrepit shrine, avoiding looking at the toppled statue, even though it looks nothing like him.
Slowly, more people arrive. The scene feels familiar, the way dreams are familiar.
He blinks, and the room is full of people, farmers and families and merchants and performers. A little boy waves at him from the doorway. Xie Lian waves back, but his hand is caught by a freezing grip.
“Hello, dianxia,” White No-Face says from behind him. Xie Lian freezes.
There’s a crash outside the temple, followed by moaning. A ghost flame appears above White No-Face’s head. White No-Face catches it easily as he guides Xie Lian to the altar in front of the toppled statue. Xie Lian wants to struggle, but he can’t.
White No-Face speaks to the crowd as he ties Xie Lian to the altar. Xie Lian doesn’t come to his senses until it’s too late for him to struggle free. His breaths are coming too fast, short and panicky. White No-Face strokes a hand across his cheek in a gesture that is meant to be comforting, but it only serves to heighten Xie Lian’s fear.
White No-Face continues speaking to the crowd, telling them all about the Human Face Disease. “The cure is murder,” White No-Face says. Xie Lian’s panic grows again.
“Who are we supposed to kill!” a merchant shouts.
White No-Face tilts his head. Xie Lian can only see the smiling part of his mask from this angle. “After seeing dianxia’ s face, I should think it would be obvious who to kill.” Xie Lian gets the sense that White No-Face is smiling under his mask.
The little ghost fire caught in White No-Face’s hands flickers angrily, flashing between red and silver. Xie Lian realizes it wants to kill anyone who even considers what White No-Face is implying.
“Oh right!” a farmer cries. “He’s a god! He’ll come back!”
The crowd shoves forward eagerly. A family of three pushes their way to the front. “Our xiao-baobei has a face already! We should go first.”
The little boy from earlier takes up the sword White No-Face offers him. “ Dianxia will be okay, right a’die ?” he asks, struggling with the weight of the black blade.
“Of course, baobei ,” the father says, placing his hands over his son’s. Together, they stab into Xie Lian’s chest, through his heart.
It hurts.
More people take up the sword, stabbing through his heart and neck equally. White No-Face continues stroking his face through the whole thing, in a mockery of comfort.
“I tell you the truth,” a merchant says, stepping forward to take the sword. “There were rumors that he knew the cure long before XianLe fell. All those deaths from the Human Face Disease would be considered his fault.”
The crowd considers this. “Of course it would have to be his fault,” a performer calls.
The rest of the crowd agrees.
I didn’t want to turn my entire people into murderers, Xie Lian tries to say. The sword slices into his throat again.
It hurts.
White No-Face pauses in his caressing of Xie Lian’s face to say, “oh, but dianxia . They don’t really blame you.” White No-Face’s head turns, so that Xie Lian can only see the smiling half of the ghost’s mask. “You’re just convenient.”
Xie Lian can’t reply, his throat too mangled to speak. He’s not sure how he’s even able to hear right now; his ears are drenched in his blood. He can’t feel his legs, or his arms, or anything beyond pain.
It hurts.
The sword slides into his chest again.
It hurts.
Xie Lian’s eyes lock onto the little ghost fire trapped in White No-Face’s hands. It never told Xie Lian its name, but he knows it anyway.
Why does he know its name?
The flame flickers silver.
The sword slides in and out of his stomach. Another death.
It hurts.
San Lang, he tries to say. San Lang. San Lang, save me.
All that comes out is a garbled sound, muffled by the blood clotted in his mouth. He can’t breathe.
It hurts.
White No-Face laughs. “ Dianxia , your San Lang can’t save you.”
Xie Lian watches in horror as White No-Face reaches down with one hand. When did he get another hand? San Lang is still cupped in two of them. White No-Face’s mask has gotten bigger.
White No-Face trails a finger along Xie Lian’s face, dragging the tip through the blood and tears drying there. “So messy,” he chides. “Now, where’s your necklace.”
If Xie Lian’s heart hadn’t been stabbed through already, it would have stopped at those words.
No! He tries to shout. San Lang’s flame flickers silver again.
It hurts.
“Ah, here we are.” White No-Face’s mask is even bigger now. Another hand closes around the ring looped around Xie Lian’s neck. “I’ll take that.”
White No-Face gives the chain a single sharp tug, and it snaps. Xie Lian struggles to move, to do something to take it back, to take it out of White No-Face’s hands.
It hurts.
White No-Face tuts. “Now now, dianxia . You can’t go moving just yet. You’re injured.” He holds up the broken chain, fist closed around the ring. “Now, let’s see. This is a very pretty trinket. It would be such a shame if it were to… fall.” The chain slips through White No-Face’s fingers. Xie Lian watches it fall with growing horror, trying to move to catch it.
He can’t, tied too tightly. The sword slides in again.
It hurts.
There’s a distant crash.
It hurts.
The ghost flame in White No-Face’s hands flickers silver one last time, then explodes into silver butterflies.
Xie Lian tries to scream.
“Now it’s just us, Dianxia,” White No-Face says sweetly, palm still cradling Xie Lian’s face like a parent would to a child. “We’ll have so much fun together.” The hands that were holding San Lang have disappeared.
Xie Lian watches the last butterfly flicker out of existence and sobs.
The sword slides in again.
It hurts.
--
Xie Lian jerks awake in the quiet of Puqi Shrine, muffling a scream on his fist. His other hand scrabbles at his chest, searching for wounds that aren’t there, until it finds San Lang’s ashes looped around his neck. He closes his hand around the ring, hunching in on himself, and shudders, holding back sobs.
He wants San Lang here, but San Lang is in Ghost City right now, dealing with the new Supreme that’s risen up. Xie Lian can handle nightmares without bothering San Lang; he’s been doing it for over eight centuries now.
His fingers close around the dice anyway, and before he’s consciously aware of it, he’s already walked through the doors into Hua Cheng’s receiving hall.
Xie Lian is wearing a simple white outer robe; it had been cold recently, so he’d taken to sleeping with both an inner and an outer layer. He’s holding his bamboo hat in his hand, and he looks conspicuously out-of-place among the more grotesque fashions of the ghosts and ghouls watching Hua Cheng converse with the new supreme.
Hua Cheng’s eyes snap away from the supreme when Xie Lian appears, and Xie Lian regrets coming, because this was silly, he can deal with nightmares on his own, and San Lang is clearly busy, but then San Lang is right next to him and the citizens of Ghost City are grumbling but leaving, and one of San Lang’s servants is leading the Supreme to a guest room and Xie Lian is wrapped into a hug.
“Dianxia, gege, what’s wrong?” San Lang murmurs into his hair, and all Xie Lian can do in response is clutch San Lang closer, pressing his face into San Lang’s maple-red tunic, and let out the sobs he’s been holding in since he woke up.
San Lang holds him tightly, humming a song into Xie Lian’s hair. Xie Lian lets San Lang’s song wash over him, washing away the taint his nightmare left on him.
--
Xie Lian comes to himself in Hua Cheng’s private chambers, curled up on San Lang’s lap while San Lang cards his fingers through Xie Lian’s hair. San Lang is humming quietly.
Xie Lian shifts to sit up, and San Lang’s arms tighten momentarily before releasing him. “Is gege alright now?” San Lang asks, gentle.
Xie Lian hums in acquiesce, pressing a kiss to San Lang’s cheek, before gingerly moving off of San Lang’s lap to sit next to him. “I’m sorry for disturbing San Lang’s meeting,” he murmurs. “I know it was important.”
Hua Cheng huffs. “Not nearly as important as dianxia.”
Xie Lian buries his face back into San Lang’s shoulder to hide the redness of his cheeks. “San Lang is too good to me, truly,” he protests.
“Nonsense. Gege deserves everything good, and more,” San Lang declares. “Nothing this San Lang does could be too good for gege.”

Author Notes
Title is from the My Chemical Romance song S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W, which is *technically* a post-apocalyptic lullaby set last year. *Looks outside.* Well, they weren't too far off. if you look at the lyrics closely, it fits v well with hualian and also it's one of my fav my chem songs and i am but a humble emo. Also, i just really like that line in the song bc it's so odd and strangely comforting.
I toyed with using the phrase "It hurts" bc I used said phrase eleven (11) times in the nightmare portion of this fic. I counted. (With the find and replace function on google docs bc i'm lazy) Make of that what you will.
the Ao3 link is on the reblog to my main
Personal-ish notes that are skippable past here (TL:DR is VOTE, goddammit, for my USA peeps.)
Anyway, this note is brought to you by me ignoring my parents "discussing" black lives matter. I swear to god, I can't wait until I can move out because guess whose parents are probably going to be voting for trump again this year. I am Not Pleased. In fact, I'm pissed, bc I am a queer white girl in a small white town, and right now, I'm not as disproportionately affected by trump as some people, but there are people who will not survive another trump term. there are people who didn't survive this trump term. anyway, repeating the tldr bc its important. tldr is VOTE, goddammit, and I swear, if you support trump in any way, you might as well just leave.

Scrapbook 2021 | Part I
For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!
It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
