White Gold S02E05-06 (2019)
Roland Setra my beloved. 💗💗💗 SO MANY screencaps here my darlings, you deserve all the Roland Setra I can give you (so long as tumblr’s prude bots don’t intervene again)
Again, this is one I watched and responded to already, but also thoroughly deserves its own screencaps. White Gold is about double glazing salesmen in Essex in the 1980s and it revels in its setting - it’s on Netflix in the UK at the moment, 12 half hour episodes total. I never was a fan of The Inbetweeners, but at least two of them are involved in this, if that’s the kind of thing that sells it for you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr Setra is a deliciously fruity money-launderer friend of the Essex gangster who owns Vincent’s double-gazing company (keep up). He likes to drop French words into conversation. He wears crisp white suits. He owns a yacht. He has that moustache. Absolute pinnacle of humanity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hhhhhh
Tumblr media
Vincent (iconic tbh): “I’m more offended when people don’t want to sleep with me.” But his wife would be pissed off if he left her out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Permission to walk your plank, Mr Setra?”
“You know you always have my permission, Vincent...”
Tumblr media
WERK
(did I do that right?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He asks Vincent to join him and his business partner in the time-share selling business, and he really enjoys Vincent’s complaints about the double-glazing selling scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But there’s the matter of Vincent’s ‘dangerously psychopathic’ boss, Ronnie...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 6 involves less screentime and a little wait for it, but it turns out that while everyone assumes Mr Setra has had Ronnie killed....Ronnie was just enjoying Roland’s hospitality:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rating
Dead? No!!
Evil? NO (shush)
Affects the plot? Sure does!
500/5 perfect. Ear nibbles.
Tumblr media
And I do recommend the show as a whole, though with reservations because the main actor is apparently a sex pest even worse than Vincent often is - it’s not clear whether they’re interested in making a third season, but my money would be against it given the lawsuit and the fact that season 2 wraps up so well. However, a (not-so-)tiny bit of me wishes we lived in a world where season 3 was desirable and would give the charming Mr Setra a recurring role.

whats your favourite narnia book if you have one
Since I grew up as an autistic christian, I have many Narnia Opinions!
So, my favorite book for it's own reasons is probably The Magician's Nephew. I'm always a slut for worldbuilding and backstory and that novel is basically just only that. Some guy we know from another book goes on an adventure and in the process gets to be involved with the creation of one world and the destruction of another? kick-ass.
Best book to adapt? The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. 1988 BBC version, 1979 Cartoon version, 2005 theatrical? All good, in their own ways. The BBC version is just perfectly 80s and the costumes are amazing (because they are costumes! they did all the monsters by sticking a guy in a big costume and I love it), the cartoon version captures the fucking whimsy of a story where SANTA SHOWS UP AND GIVES EVERYONE PRESENTS and the first person to offer any serious lore about the situation is named MR BEAVER. And the 2005 film has the big battles and CGI and Tilda Swinton as the White Witch which is... so much. I love them all.
But the best book adaptation is the 1990 BBC The Silver Chair. Hands down. It's got Tom Baker's Puddleglum, Warwick Davis playing an owl, 0£ BBC budget greenscreened giants (MULTIPLE TIMES), a group of people discovering IT'S A COOKBOOK and one of them being offended by the cookbook saying they don't taste very good, the bad guy turning into a giant rubber snake. a witch trying to gaslight some humans into believing the sun is a myth, and the ultimate salvation of Eustace Scrubb: a boy who almost deserved being named that.
And since I can't not list basically everything Narnia ever made, BBC's 1989 Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is pretty good too. It's a fun "road movie", in that it's an odyssey into a fictional Mysterious Ocean of Here There Be Dragons.
Lotta hits in that one. It's also got a "collect the macguffins!" plot where they're trying to collect the Seven Lost Lords.
But yeah, it's like... the first Island gets them a lord and they get to end slavery. Next up, Dragon TF island (The dragon is Greed... but it's also just a literal fucking dragon). Next, Gold TF island. Gold, it turns out, makes you go insane in your lust for wealth, even if you're already a Prince of a whole country. The gold is Greed, but it will also just fucking kill you because you'll be turned into gold.
Then it's the island of the ugly invisible one-foot guys and it turns out they cast a spell to turn invisible so no one could see how they're ugly but they're not ugly, they just think they are? and then it goes "HEY LUCY COMPARE YOURSELF TO YOUR OLDER SISTER" and she's like "I'm ugly.... unlike her. Maybe I should use magic to STEAL HER BEAUTY?!" and it's like, wow. Is there maybe a theme here about self-esteem in your appearance? and Clive Officemax Lewis is over there going I'LL NEVER TELL.
Anyway it's got the good line about how the Wizard in charge of the ugly invisible one-footed pogo-idiots is that how he eagerly awaits the day that they can be ruled by wisdom, instead of magic. It's a fun approach to magic: it's something that is a shortcut, a crutch, and it's a poor replacement for Wisdom, even when used by "the good guys". Tell me, Mr. FedexKinkos-Lewis, do you have any opinions on the complicated relationship between Christianity and magic? oh, you do? I never would have guessed!
They also find The Island Where Dreams Come True. They don't land there, they just fish a screaming man out of the ocean who is trying to escape it. The sailors hear it's The Island Where Dreams Come True and are like "wow, I could have my own ship!" and he yells no, you fools, not dreams like your wishes and imaginations, your actual dreams come true on this island.
and everyone agrees: Get us the fuck away from this island and lets never return.
Anyway I'm not gonna talk about THE ENTIRE MOVIE/BOOK but it's got a great weirdness at the end where they reach the end of the world (which is flat. It's okay, this is Narnia, a completely different world with different physical rules than Earth), and it's a waterfall, but a waterfall going up?
It turns out Heaven is on the other side of it. They turn around, but the anthropomorphic mouse is like "ehh, I'll take that journey" and becomes the Elijah of Aslan's Country, their equivalent of heaven.
Narnia, won't you?

[Read by Catherine Tate.]
"Just take a look at this view!" Donna cried. The Doctor joined her at the window. "I mean what a view," Donna exclaimed. "I've never seen anything like it!"
"I have," replied the Doctor softly. "And so have you."
"The sun, flaming red and gold, across white mountain peaks and crystal valleys? I don't think so!" said Donna.
"And down there?" he asked, pointing.
"What?"
"Down there."
"Where down there?" she asked.
"There down there," he snapped.
"Well, that's– Oh my God!" she said.
"Chiswick?" he suggested.
"That's Chiswick!" she squawked. "What is Chiswick doing down there?"
"In a crystal valley below white mountain peaks above which the sun is flaming red and gold, you mean?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Well, that's the real question," the Doctor replied.
He opened the window latches, slid the pane aside, and reached out. His fingers touched something invisible and the view, mountains and Chiswick alike, rippled like water.
"It's a telesensual holocunation," he said as he closed the window.
"A what? You're just getting me back for the plywood thing, aren't you?" said Donna.
"It's feeding off our thoughts," he said. "It's bleeding our memories. And replicating a composite view to make us both feel at home."
"'It'? Who's 'it'?"
"This building," the Doctor said.
Donna looked at him. "Wait, I'm checking... nope, I don't understand what you're saying."
"Neither do I," he replied with a fragile grin. "It's just a hunch."
"How is it making us both feel at home?" she asked.
The Doctor pointed down at Chiswick. "That's you, Donna Noble," he said. He raised his hand and pointed at the mountains. "And that's me."
"You?"
"That's Gallifrey."
Donna opened her mouth. "That's what it looked like?"
"Yes," he said.
"It's so beautiful!"
"Yes, it was," he replied. "It really was."

Memes and fun bracelets
And then we got to some of the last bracelets in my collection for now. This is a mix of memes, general words like Phandom, and the lone bracelets that doesn't really go into any specific sets.
Tumblr media
Starting out with a fun one is a few rings! I made more but have given them away to friends. The black one says PINOF in morse code!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there's PHAN and PHANDOM made with rainbow pattern! These I would like to make more of in the future.
Tumblr media
Golden Pig is the first one I made before I got pig charms, so this is just fully gold beads of different kinds.
Tumblr media
Legalise Catboys is made with pony beads, where the white ones are glow-in-the-dark. And the cat beads i got from my friend Percy.
Tumblr media
Phaby is silver because i wanted it to be. Whoever gets this bracelets also get a loose baby, cuz i couldn't get them to be charms.
Some Nostalgia bracelets:
Tumblr media
Placenta is a remake of one I made for the Danish show, and I chose dark red glass beads because a placenta is bloody.
Tumblr media
BBC Radio 1 is red cuz that's the colour I think of when I head BBC1, prolly because of the BBC Play logo when I watched Doctor Who.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Square Hair is meming on Phil's hair on that gameshow. I had square wooden beads in matching colour to Phil's dyed hair and Dans mop of hair. The pattern in the beads here is taken from Dans shirt:
Tumblr media
Vegas Vlog is based on the non existing Las Vegas Vlog, and the colours are taking from the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.
Tumblr media
Emo Hair is just black beads because of the emo hair both of them had.
Tumblr media
The Hand is cream because its close to a pale skin colour. I made this one because I spitted the hand charm on a random pair of thrifted earrings.
Tumblr media
Top Dan Memes is black for Dan's branding, with a few red beads because that's usually the colour people use when doing top of something lists.
Tumblr media
Ranch is white in different sizes with two shades of green mixed in to look like ranch dressing. I'm very proud of this one.
Tumblr media
Slit is glassy silver all around with stars on because like phaby, i just thought it fitted.
Tumblr media
Rat Boy Summer is based on the shirt Phil wore last summer. I added a colourful bow for a little flare, as well as an ice cream to really hit home that it's a summer themed one. The Hello Kitty beads are for Dan, and the normal small beads are just chosen at random to be colourful.
Tumblr media
Superglue is white in different sizes and shades, which I copied off of a bracelet I traded to at the Danish show, but they had used heart shaped letter beads.
Tumblr media
Dip & Pip is just a bracelet for the new nick names they have gotten. I used the turquoise beads I had because it paired nicely with the green i used too.
Tumblr media
Lastly, here's one based on the Dan And Phil Beats logo. The colours pulled from the logo got used in the letter beads and the hearts the rest of the beads are pure white to make the colours stand out.

Tom Daley models jumper he's been knitting at Paris Olympics
Tumblr media
Tom Daley isn’t just an Olympic champion. The gay British diver is also a talented knitter.
When he hasn’t been up on the board going for medals at Paris, Tom Daley has spent his downtime in the stands with his needles and wool.
The Olympics aren’t even finished yet but Tom has revealed that he’s already finished knitting his latest creation – a special Paris Olympics commemorative jumper.
Tom’s jumper is in the shades of red, white, and blue to match both Tom’s UK flag and the Paris flag, with the intricate Eiffel Tower Paris 2024 logo across the front.
Tom knitted his initials “TD” on one sleeve and the number 5 on the other to represent the Olympians’s fifth time competing in the Olympics.
He showed off his work – which you can see more on Tom’s separate knitting Instagram account – in new videos on social media.

Tom Daley won silver medal at Paris Olympics
Last week, Tom Daley and his British diving partner Noah Williams won silver in the men’s synchronised dive at the Paris Olympics.
His first silver medal is his fifth, completing Tom’s set alongside his three bronze and the gold medal he picked up in Tokyo.
After winning gold, Tom took a long break from the sport.
But the British star said he returned for one reason – to impress his six-year-old son Robbie.
“Robbie was like, ‘Papa, I want to see you dive in the Olympics’. And that was that,” Tom told BBC Sport last week.
“When your kid asks you to do something, you do it.”

Tom Daley’s husband Dustin Lance Black and their two sons Robbie and Phoenix cheered Tom on at the Paris Aquatics Centre.
“Doing it in front of my son who asked me to come back is so special. He’s six years old now and I think he might remember some of this,” Tom told BBC Sport.
“I now have [medals] of every colour, I’ve completed the set.”

Weekly Roundup: 20th January - 26th January
Ngl, I'm feeling particularly proud this week. I managed to post 5 fics this week, with a combined word count of 23,297 of my 15,000 word a week goal. Im also at 53,357 words of my monthly 60,000 word goal!
As always, recs first and then my own fics.
Haven - EyesUpMarksman - The Witcher (TV) [Archive of Our Own] (Geralt/Jaskier, AWAU)
Summary: It was a very neat arrangement; the kings of the Continent and the Witchers of Kaer Morhen had a set agreement that they wouldn’t be at each others’ throats in the coming years, and Alfred Pankratz got rid of his eldest son and heir-apparent. The latter could have been seen as a great loss. It was seen as a great loss by anyone who didn’t know the truth, which just happened to be most of the Continent. Only a select few knew why the Viscount de Lettenhove was so eager to get rid of his eldest, and only, son.
Jaskier is settled into his new life in Kaer Morhen, married to the feared White Wolf, Geralt of Rivia, and an unexpected gift is presented to the couple in the first few months of their marriage.
The Blessing of a Long Life - thinksleep - Wiedźmin | The Witcher - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own] (Geralt/Jaskier)
Summary: Five times someone accidentally extended Jaskier’s life (and one time someone did it on purpose)
Care and Rehabilitation of a Bard - theblobfishwrites - Wiedźmin | The Witcher - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own] (Gerat/Jaskier, Aiden/Lambert)
Summry: After the dragon hunt, Jaskier thought he was done with Witchers. But when life (or rather Nilfgaard) throws you into neighbouring prison cells, you're kind of bound to become friends. Which is why Jaskier would do anything to protect Aiden. Even if that means going to Kaer Morhen, home of the man that broke his heart.
Kill Me Slowly - safiraneo - Wiedźmin | The Witcher - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own]
Summary: Jaskier isn't exactly happy to dig himself out of his own grave. In fact, he'd very much like to go back in it. Unfortunately, Destiny has other plans.
who is this bard? - Sunfl0wer78 - Wiedźmin | The Witcher - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own]
Summary: No one knows what’s going on.
Eskel, Lambert, Vesemir, Ciri…. They all wonder just who is this bard Geralt keeps finding company with?
FlooFlirt (TM) - Iwritemynameinallcaps - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own] (Texting au in the wizarding world)
Summary: There's a new available feature on the very succesfull wizarding communication device PocketFloo (TM). Let the FlooFlirting begin.
So, mostly Geralt/Jaskier with suprise Drarry at the bottom lol. Have a wonderful week <3
Now to my own fics
A Party Full of Love (Bilbo/Thorin and little Frodo, written for my wonderful friends at the Bagginshield Book Club (BBC)
Summary: Frodo loves his Uncle Bilbo and his uncle Thorin and so has decided to give them a party. A party he has painstackingy crafted the invitations too. Now all that is left is to deliver them.
Please Mahal, Don't take the hobbit! (Bilbo/Thorin, inspired by the song "Don't take the irl," by Tim McGraw)
Summary: Thorin's adad was taking him fishing when he was a young dwarf.
It starts with Thorin and hi sadad and ends with Frodo and his own adad.
Snippets of Bilbo and Thorin's lives as they grow and love and live for one another.
All Shall Fade, All Shall Fade! (Pippin Took - centric)
Summary: Pippin is a young hobbit, not even an adult, alone in the world of men with orcs at Gondor's walls.
He watches as brave oy. ung Farmir marches out hoping ot earn his father's love as he is ordered to sing. To sing for this man when those he loves most are fighting against evil.
He has never felt as small as he does in that moment and all he wants is to go home, Merry, Frodo and Sam in tow.
His gaze is blinded by the gold (Bilbo/Thorin, unhappy ending, written for @flashfictionfridayofficial)
Summary: Bilbo is running from Smaug, the dragon that wants to burn him alive when he is suddenly stopped by Thorin's sword pointing right at his chest.
Thorin - Sword - Bilbo.
It doesnt make sense, none of it, including why his partner is pointing his sword at Bilbo
Of Witcher's and Songbirds and their wings (Geralt/Jaskier, wrote the final two chapters for this long fic and I'm so glad it is now complete)
Summary: The continent is changeing. After his bard left him and died on the way down the Killer, Geralt is left reeling, trying to survive day by day.
5 Years after tat fateful day, Geralt and the other witchers learn about "The Sick" and the way it is changing the fate of their world.
What are witchers if not monster killers, and nothing is more monstrous then murdering children for being born different and this time the witchers will not sit back and accept it.

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

Afterlife exists in BBC Merlin and we all know that since we've seen a lot of ghosts, raised corpses, spirits etc etc.
But it is interesting how those souls look like in the real world. How does afterlife affect them? Because they are all different, I believe that real life events shape their forms. Their past affect them after death.
One of the first souls we see is Ygraine, summoned by Morgause. She died before the show but it is known that everyone loved her. She was kind, careful and, as she said, she would give up her life again for Arthur.
Tumblr media
Here she is. She looks almost alive. She's in gold colors, glowing in light of all those candles. She can even touch Arthur as she hugged him earlier. She was pure. Her soul was pure.
She was summoned by magic and died because of magic.
_____________________________
And this is how Uther looks like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He looks like a ghost. Like a deadman in black clothes. He is there to kill people. To make their lives worse. There is no warmth from him, there is no light around him. All the candles were off the moment he appeared. If Ygraine was ready to die again for Arthur, Uther was ready to kill Arthur if that helped him regain 'Camelot's honor'.
He died in the castle and appeared in the castle.
What if he looks so creepy because of that blue-ish white filter?
____________________________
Well, this is how Balinor looks like.
Tumblr media
He also has this blue-ish filter. But that's all. He looks pretty much alive or if it was a nighttime. Nothing has changed in him after his death (only the colors). And he is glowing.
We see him in the Crystal Cave, surrounded by magic light. Because, after all, he was a sorcerer himself.
Even his clothes. Nothing changed in him. Despite having such a cold colors he looks somehow warm. He is there to help Merlin, his son. He is there to give hope.
So yes, after all of it, I believe that afterlife does affect the way the souls look like and how they appear.

SO, The Maccabees are my third favourite band of all time (and you know I take my music seriously so that's quite a compliment) but they announced they were breaking up in 2016 and were going to do a final farewell tour in 2016. This meant I never got to see them live.
They released their first full length LP back in 2007 titled 'Colour It In' and IT SLAPS. It first got big when the BBC DJ Steve Lamacq (Lammo) played the track 'Latchmere' on BBC Radio 1 and the band were noticed by the artist Jamie T who was the face of British Indie music back in the day. He invited them on tour and the band received the recognition they very well deserved. Later that year they toured America with another Brit-indie group called Bloc Party (WHO ARE SO FUCKING GOOD).
Then in 2009 the album 'Wall of Arms' was released and it just became hit after hit. Not a single skip on that album (or any of them imo). They followed with 'Given To The Wild' in 2012 (which became certified Gold) and 'Marks To Prove It' in 2015. This would be their last album and they toured it twice, once for release and once for the farewell. The support act for their final gig was the post-punk band IDLES from my home town (now my 5th fav band) and after they disbanded the lead singer Orlando Weeks went on to do the album art for them.
Orlando also released his own solo music and an illustrated book titled 'The Gritter Man' with an accompanying soundtrack and I'd recommend you listen to it over Christmas rather than any other seasonal music.
The frontman Felix White also went on to make his own music but he's now most well known for his cricket podcast 'Tailenders' which he hosts with the current face of BBC Radio 1 Greg James (who was also the guy who did the funeral for the duck).
I saw every member of the band play with their new acts over the summer and each of them played a Maccabees song and I thought they were just reminiscing or something, maybe because that hurt less than deluding myself into thinking that they'd reform.
BUT ANYWAY! i'm extremely happy and I'll be the first in line to buy tickets when they tour :3
chin in hands kicking my feet lotte this is so interesting i might have to listen to some of their music now. also IM SO GLAD THEY GOT BACK TOGETHER THATS HUGE ACTUALLY

Trying out a new digital art style with a self-portrait (I heard a rumour tumblr is gonna allow gif pfps and went a little crazy 😅)
ID under cut!
[ID: A shoulder-up portrait of the artist. They're a white nonbinary person with short brown hair, dark blue glasses, and a white-and-green striped t-shirt. They're standing in front of a dark blue background with rainbow stars.
There's a speech bubble coming from their mouth. Inside cycles several doodles: A trans flag, a rainbow flag, Castiel from Supernatural, a black fluffy cat, the USS Enterprise from Star Trek, a sewing needle with blue thread, the gold dragon Pendragon crest from BBC Merlin, and the AO3 logo.
The artist's signature, '@aerialworms' is written on the right side of the image in blue. /End ID]

HAPPY 60 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO EVERYONE! I've got into Doctor Who since May 2022. And since I got into Arts Bachillerato, I found my favourite incarnation of the Doctor: Number Three, the talented, snazzy and 725 year old wonder Jon Pertwee. Thanks to him, the TARDIS was painted blue and so was everything around him, and some of his timelord anatomy was brought to light. Althought he was exiled to earth, his stories were very memorable, he had a silky, melodic voice along with frilly snow-white sleeves popping out of his velvety jacket which housed the iconic two tiny drums tapping either side of his chest, and those factions. Neither young nor old. Beautiful, absolutely precious. Snowy hair with hints of gold, forever sparkling eyes of the color of gallium melted under the sun, and a very pointy, very mighty nose top off the face of the third incarnation of Doctor Who, all over a 1,93m stature with long legs at the bottom. Meanwhile Tom Baker is awesome, Peter Davison is neat, Patrick Troughton is cute, Paul McGann is handsome, David Tennant is astonishing and Matt Smith, which was my first Doctor before I even got into Doctor Who, is cool. And because of him, I slowly spiralled into a world full of wholesome british TV and movies - specially the British Broadcasting Corporation, the responsible of the TARDIS' landing! And he makes me appreciate the UK even more. I am really proud of how long he has come. I just hope the Doctor never turns into a mass of energy sparks. By the way, the TARDIS was hard to line up, I had to trace her from a 3D model (not all of it, her doors are made by me). Coloring her was a bit easier though... BUT THE SPACE, WHICH I DREW MYSELF, WAS A BLOODY HELL OF A PAIN. And please no judging about every Doctor's position, specially since I wanted space for the logo and to make it symmetric. At least I won't get attacked for putting Hartnell in the middle... This took me about five hours, so... Hope you like it! Happy 60th anniversary to every Timelord that's ever stepped on Gallifrey! And keep it up, Tennant! We love you, Crowley! '“What? …What?” were David Tennant’s first words when, to everyone’s surprise, including his, he regenerated out of Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, and not Ncuti Gatwa, as we all expected. For three episodes the 10th Doctor is back as the 14th, before Gatwa takes over at Christmas, and in his first proper episode – after a neat appearance in a Comic Relief sketch – he has moved onto “Why?”
Allow me to help you there, David: falling ratings.
Oh, you feel bad for Jodie Whittaker, a great Doctor unfortunate to be trapped in a wormhole of so-so episodes and constantly under attack from galactic sized fury-bots, slamming down their GB News mugs (filled with good, white tea, love) and taking to the social medias to cry about the bloody woke mob at the BBC filling our children’s heads with stupid ideas about tolerance and being nice.
But really, the problem, to my mind, was that while showrunner Chris Chibnall threw everything at Whittaker’s Doctor, he didn’t truly hit upon a transcendent stone-cold classic episode, and the whole thing felt like it was trying too hard; it lacked a bit of easy-to-watch magic. Something which is immediately back with “the one in the skinny suit”, under returning showrunner Russell T Davies.
As Dr Who’s 60th anniversary approaches, this should turn into something of a celebration of Davies, the man who kickstarted the new Who back in 2005 with Christopher Ecclestone as the Doctor, before hitting absolute gold with Tennant. While Chibnall was working on multiple meta-levels leaving us all trying to keep up, Davies pitches this first episode as more like E.T. in Eastenders. This sense of bringing things down-to-earth is helped further by the return of Catherine Tate as Donna, easily the funniest of his companions.
Taking place in London – and I do love Davies’ London, he was a pioneer in showing positively, and accurately, a city remarkable for its peaceful diversity (don’t believe the hype) – The Star Beast sees a cute little Furby-like alien called The Meep ‘crash’ into the city, which falls under the protection of Donna’s daughter, Rose, as some other ant-like aliens hunt it down.
The Doctor is back to help, with the catch being that he has to prevent Donna from remembering who he is, otherwise She Will Definitely Die. Without getting too bogged down, the last time we saw Donna, she basically had to have her mind wiped for her own protection, after she took on Time Lord powers that were too strong for her human body – her tragedy, heartbreaking at the time, was that she’d have to live her life without remembering her time with the Doctor.
However, as we all know in post-Marvel entertainment, there’s always a way around She Will Definitely Die – but the particular way this episode plays out is really going to upset the Woke Police. For Donna’s daughter Rose is trans, people – cue GB News mugs smashing against flat screens – and her trans-ness is very much central to the plot as well as the thematic ideas of identity crises and Otherness (not least with regards to the Doctor) and what do we do, attack these people or rally around them. Oh boy, is it going to drive people mad.
It's actually an almost touching move by Davies in the way it backs up the seriously upfront progressive humanism of Chibnall’s tenure, and comes in defiance of those who thought featuring Rosa Parks in an episode was the end of the world. What people seem to forget about Doctor Who, both the Woke Police and those other furrow-browed joy deniers, the Fanboy Police, is that it is a family show, designed to be watched with kids.
Yes it should be clever and mind-bending but it’s not supposed to be careless or cool. You need a bit of Horrible Histories, you need a bit of future thinking around humanity, because, well, this is science fiction – it’s the nature of this game even more than dressing up as Klaatu.
Anyway, the truth is this episode is a little bit thin, the big twist around The Meep pretty obvious (though not to my shocked 8 year old), and the saving of Donna does end up being really quite clunky. But it doesn’t really matter.
It’s about the magic: the chemistry between Tennant and Tate is winning, the laugh out loud moments hit double figures (I particularly like Donna’s repeated disses to the cutesy Meep – “space rat”, “ferret from Mars”), the Tardis has had a rather natty Modern House renovation, and the Disney money now coming into the show is well spent on set-pieces that manage to be Spielberg-ian in uniting the spectacular with the suburban.
It’s a hoot, and as a way to drum up attention and goodwill towards the series in the run-up towards Gatwa taking over, it’s quite irresistible.
Gatwa will certainly have a lot to live up to, mind. For Tennant truly is the best Doctor ever. Yes, yes, I know you liked Tom Baker when you were a kid, but really, you're wrong: Tennant is the best. Like a Tex Avery cartoon trapped inside Camus’ Meursault, he’s an existentialist hero for all the family. Saturday night must-watch TV is back, and it’s Woker than ever, folks...'
