I love the Doctor and Donna because they really are Best Friends. From the start, she is on equal footing with him, where Rose and Martha are more in awe of him and pining after him.

Whenever they're mistaken for a couple, they always correct the person, and it doesn't feel like a set-up for a romantic arc. Donna shuts him down when she thinks the Doctor is propositioning her ("You're not mating with me sunshine!") and just generally gives him perspective and brings him down to Earth (or whatever planet they're on.)

And The Doctor always looks out for Donna. He doesn't ignore pleas of "just save someone" even though it would've been easy to shut her down and say that he can't.

I'm really glad they got their happy domestic ending together as a family.
