Frankly, I think a lot at 3am about how Hozier's Take Me to Church is an apology for Merlin in SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS
Starting from the most obvious thing, which is that Merlin is almost a god of magic.
But more importantly, this god of magic does not seek to be worshipped, but on the contrary, he has dedicated his life to a mortal, Arthur, so full of flaws and insecurities. To such an extent that he has placed his existence and Identity at the foot of the altar that he himself built for Arthur.
This altar was literally built on lies and was very consciously and voluntarily prepared so that when everything was revealed (when Merlin will reveal his magic, his identity and all the other lies) Arthur could give a verdict of absolution or death (I'll tell you my sins. So you can sharpen your knife)
The chorus is literally them. But there are also other verses where one can make the comparison of the Merlin of the last seasons (the worn-out and morally defeated) who has to tell himself that everything is for a greater purpose to appease his guilt, and his over-enlarged vision of Arthur makes it worthwhile (If I'm a pagan of the good times. My lover is the sunlight)
BUT BUT BUT STOP THERE IS MORE
You can also talk about the part where it says:
No masters or kings
When the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence
Than our gentle sin
Magic and the magical community are not per se affiliated with a king, because their beliefs go beyond politics and the vanity of man's desires. Rituals are the highest expression of their faith and culture. And while there are many who do wrong with magic, magic itself is not bad because it simply is It is a concept that exists intertwined with life itself, like air and water, and it is even in children But most kingdoms see it as the highest of crimes.Beyond the personal vendetta that only one king had against magic, For other kingdoms it represents a threat because you cannot subjugate something that has no will or agenda of its own.Something that is available to the common man That would put them in a position of power that the crown does not want them to have. The people should never feel that there is anything that would make them equal to the real ones (Not my personal thoughts, but rather what the royalty of that time in that universe would think)

What if...Ygraine Returns as a Ghost to Care for Her Son
Servant: Sir, I came to inform you that the knights you sent to battle are all dead.
Uther (sitting on the throne, distracted): Well, send their belongings to their families and tell them they were heroes. And bring more cookies, I'm hungry.
Arthur (six years old, watching the scene with distracted eyes next to a very angry ten-year-old Morgana): Good people die young, so when I grow up, I want to be bad like mom. 😌
Morgana: What are you talking about, Arthur! Your mother was a kind and good woman! Where did you get the idea that she was bad!?
Arthur: Yesterday I heard mom say that her dream was for a manure cart to run over dad so he would die once and for all. 🙂
Morgana (eyes wide in complete shock): Your mother would never say such a thing, Arthur… 🫢
Ygraine (next to Uther, trying to strangle him but unable to because she is a ghost): Don't listen to her, baby, mom hates dad and doesn't support anything he's doing! I still can't believe I married this man, listen to what mom says, Arthur, don't follow in his footsteps!
Arthur (turns to Morgana): Mom just said she hates dad, she's also trying to strangle him, but her hands keep going through his body, I think she's a ghost. 🫠 *slowly losing sanity*
Morgana (realizing that the young prince might be crazy): Arthur, maybe she's just joking…
Ygraine (trying to make Uther trip by stepping on his own cape): I'M NOT JOKING! If I could, I would kill him myself! I just can't because I can't touch him!
Arthur: I don't know if the gods would like so much violence…
Ygraine: The gods don't like your father!
Arthur: Okay… 🙂 *takes a cookie from the tray the servant brought*

Headcannon - When Arthur was a kid he used to sneak into Uther’s room to steal shirts and wear them as nightwear.
He thought that a piece of clothing he wore to sleep, that smelled slightly like his father, is what a hug from Uther would feel like.
He never really found out if that was true because he had never experienced a real hug from the King.
Maybe, when he’s older and Arthur and Merlin are friends, but have obliviously feelings for each other, he steals Merlin’s neckerchief somehow. He doesn’t think or know to ask Merlin for a hug because he subconsciously thinks he’ll be rejected instantly.
So instead, he steals Merlin’s neckerchief and hides it under his pillow until night and while he’s sleeping he kind of just holds close it next to him.

Something i love about Merlin is that, he doesn't try the typical good guy "No! You can be saved!" around Morgana, Uther or Mordred. He's just like fuck you for hurting my boyfriend, I will break your neck and kill you in the most painful way possible.

The problem with recommending people BBC Merlin is that you try to convey how emotionally destroyed the show left you and that it actually has very deep characters with complex motives where no one character is black or white
But there's Uther on screen having sex with a troll and it kinda undermines your point

"his life is worth a thousand of mine" sounds like a line from a tragic romance, classic novel that puts others like it to shame.
and yet, it is literally from bbc merlin, a show about a magic servant that tries to sacrifice himself for the life of his prince everyday.
but tbh, king arthur and merlin are a tale of tragic romance and a classic novel.

merlin being a sorcerer reveal: has to happen while urthur is still king. arthur has to make the choice himself to save merlin. this is arthur’s most important decision.
If he decides not to go against his father, he helps Merlin escape. uther then sends a bounty out for Merlin, and Arthur is under lock and key. Arthur escapes with the help of the gang, and searches for Merlin himself. kind of reflecting when arthur went to find the cure for the poison merlin drank for him. The reason Merlin was found out was because Merlin saved Arthur's life or something like that. maybe merlin gets to reveal all the times he saved arthur's life in front of arthur and uther.

Merlin on his most respectful day.
Merlin: Hey, mom, can I throw away these old things that no one is eating?
Hunith *distracted*: You can, dear.
Merlin: okay, you heard it, Gaius, let's go.
Gaius: 😮
Hunith: No, no, Merlin, wait, son, not that old man🤣
Merlin: Oh, okay then, and can I throw away that old man over there? *points to Uther*
Uther: 😡
Arthur and Morgana: You can throw him away!

"what do you think uther will do to me?" is such a heartbreaking question merlin asks gaius in s3 e1. The thought of getting caught and killed is constantly on his mind, but he doesnt voice it like this very often. Merlin has seen magic users executed at this point, but he knows his fate would be worse bc he isnt just another unnamed (to uther) sorcerer passing through. Merlin has been occupying space in the royal household for awhile now. If uther found out about merlin, it would be a big betrayal, and we know uther doesnt handle that very well at all.

whenever I try to think Uther as a cruel Father, my mind would go to that scene where he carries him, crying. Fuck! The root of the whole problem is that he had a heart! Imagine him as a cruel man, vindictive but he wasn't heartless, if that had been, purge wouldn't have happened. He'd have moved and taken another wife, come to think of it, he didn't take another wife, nobody would have begrudge him, he was the king afterall, and one prince isn't enough to secure the bloodline and the throne. So yeah, Uther did love Arthur and Morgana, Morgana's betrayal was so deep he went mad man! Truly astounding. That a man who committed genocide was a human and had a heart and he loved his children. Truly, too much complexity
