Bored Now (Doppelgangland)

Doppelgangland is a very good episode.

There’s a version of this essay that is nothing but that sentence over and over again, phrased in different ways. It’s a nearly self-evident truth – this episode is uncontroversially and near-universally beloved. IMDB’s ranking has it as the best episode of Season Three, and 8th overall. It’s regularly mentioned as a season highlight by dedicated and casual fans alike. Vampire Willow is one of the show’s most memorable villains, and she only gets this episode to shine at all, after being criminally underused in The Wish. Even Joss Whedon ranks it among his own top 10. Fan ratings aren’t everything – the fact that Restless comes in at #33 is a clear indicator of the voters’ collective lack of taste – but when a fandom so clearly agrees on something, I think it’s worth asking why.

In one way, that question has a very easy answer: this episode is very fun to watch. Alyson Hannigan dazzles as the quietly charismatic Vampire Willow, dominating the screen with a very specific almost-awkward swagger. She then channels her inner Tatiana Maslany and delivers sparkling turns, first as Willow-playing-Vampire-Willow and then as Vampire-Willow-playing-Willow. She gets such joy from playing up the differences and similarities between both characters – perhaps my favourite bit coming in her demonstration of how terrible both Willows are at improvisation acting. Hannigan has been quietly improving as an actor since Welcome to the Hellmouth, and now shows herself to sit comfortably beside Gellar and Head as one of the strongest members of the cast.

And it’s more than just Vampire Willow – the whole show is singing. The humour is bright and zippy. Every character, now settled in the roles they’ll fill for the rest of the season, gets moments to shine. Anya is starting to emerge as a character who is recognisably Anya. The climactic fight in the Bronze is probably the best group action scene so far, and might have a shout to be the show’s best ever. Even the tertiary characters are in form: Devon’s insistence that only “fruity jazz bands” know more than three chords is quietly one of the funniest moments of the episode. This is an episode that starts being fun early on, and never stops.

the 'and will too' part is one of my favorite byler moments because Mike is so gay that he cant stop thinking about will even when he's talking to his girlfriend, the same girl he's supposedly in love with. like... this is them having a 'romantic moment', is it not? so why is Mike thinking about will when he's thinking about romance, huh? like idk about anyone else, but I would definitely not be bringing my best friend into a conversation with my gf that I was trying to make romantic. my guy cant even keep his mind off of will when (making an attempt at) being romantic with El. when he thinks of love, of romance, of caring about someone, he thinks of will.

and this may seem like grasping at straws, but I think that this slide in the byler proof slideshow has a good point as well that adds to this.

oh yeah. and, he almost always chooses to stand or sit with will instead of with el.

Idk, I haven't rewatched the show yet, but I think that it's incredibly interesting how Mike seems to usually have Will set as his top priority. Another thing from the byler proof slideshow (this thing is a great source, it had almost every point I want to make, highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read through it yet)

yet another 'romantic' m*leven moment in which Mike is thinking of Will. Oh and don't get me started on the snow ball.

And then! there's this. idk if you can see it, but Mike is moving towards will here, you can see him shift in direction slightly, forcing El to follow. And while I'm aware that the ship isn't all about color symbolism, I do still think that it's worth pointing out that lumax are both wearing blue and yellow, as well as Mike's yellow belt with his blue outfit.

also, Max's watch is yellow... and it's on the same wrist as the hand that is holding a BLUE BAG is on (at least in this particular scene). Will's shirt is a similar color to El's here. Max's outfit is the most obviously blue and yellow here, with her yellow shirt and blue shorts, and when Mike and El leave, while Will says it's gross, Max says that its romantic. So, while Will's shirt color is matching El's, and he says that Mike and El's relationship is 'gross', Max's outfit is in Mike and Will's colors, and she says 'its romantic'. Not saying any names, just that its romantic. idk I might just be grasping at straws here lol. not to mention the fact that dustin has blue backpack straps with yellow accents on a green shirt. also, on Max's waist is blue and yellow, and Mike is wearing a yellow belt with blue shorts. hmmm interesting.

and, of course, the fact that the only one not stated to have a romantic interest in anyone as of st3 (Will) is wearing a shirt the same color as El, who only showed an interest in Mike after he first acted interested in her. could be implying that she isn't actually interested in Mike, or that will wont choose to tell Mike how he feels until Mike does so first.

im writing this at 3am so im probably just totally delusional rn and need to go to sleep but like LOOK AT THAT!! I just love when I see byler's colors on stuff tbh, especially in scenes focused on mileven.

and back to the topic of light in windows!! Mike is sitting by a closed and dark part of the curtain, and El is standing near an open part with light shining through it. and guess what? THAT CURTAIN IS YELLOW!!! And... the lamp behind El is off. the lightbulb isn't lit... thinking about flickergate a bit now. oh, and, the poster framed behind her appears to be in blues and yellows.

and in season one, which first establishes the roles of the characters, Mike is shown, again and again, to be searching for will, constantly thinking about him, having him influence his words and actions even when they're apart. he finds El in a yellow shirt when he's searching for will, which I do find to be interesting.

oh yeah, and! in season 4, Eddie says...

and you know the kids who have the most important almost deaths or supposed deaths in season one? Mike, will, and El! Mike is being pressured into his relationship with eleven and forcing himself to conform to the idea of being straight and viewed as acceptable by other people's standards, El is being pressured and forced by Mike into entering a sort of relationship with him, and will, oh my poor boy will.

yeah that scene.

i saw a post a while ago about light between couples in stranger things, and it lives forever in my head. and i rewatched this episode recently and one bit really got to me.

there is VERY CLEARLY a window in this room. and, for most of the scene, they’re standing with the window between them. but here’s the kicker, chat.

here’s the kicker: not for ONE SECOND does the camera move to show us the window between them. it’s always framed like this, emphasizing the distance and never the relationship.
