I used to despise Eridan and think he was the absolute worst character (barring Cronus ig) but you have shown me the light and completely turned my opinion around and now I think he is such an endearing little freak <3 I read your whole blog already but if you've got any more thoughts on eri or anyone else then I hope you post them bc I'd love to hear more abt it!
i have sooo many controversial opinions about the dancestors you have noooooo idea
#always glad to have another person go 'oh eridan's not that bad huh'#like he IS a freak and there is SO MUCH thats wrong with him#but he's supposed to be an antagonist AND sympathetic AND funny AND pathetic AND tragic#like all these things can be true hes just a complex character#same w a lot of them#vriska equius and gamzee all kind of fall into this boat#yes there is a lot thats wrong with them but they are also 13#let he who was not a shithead at 13 cast the first stone#anyway ive been hesitant about talking about the dancestors because if my eridan opinions are controversial...#but the tl;dr is that almost all of them suck horribly#like collectively they are the worst characters in homestuck and thats on purpose#bc their role in the story is villainous like theyre the reason lord english even exists#if the alternian trolls as a rule are meant to be sympathetic even if they have a lot of problems#then the beforus trolls are like a worst case scenario of 'what if they never address their problems and grow up that way'#theyre the counterpoint to the comics themes of being a kid and growing up#learning to care about each other and become responsible#the beforus trolls are children who never grew up#going through the exact same problems and drama as when they were children#because they never took responsibility for their own actions or their treatment of each other#And That's Terrible

you know what i think is interesting? the way that some people have just flat out decided that aziraphale being in hell during the body swap wasn't even a little bit traumatic.
we obviously know it fucked with crowley (see: the telling jim to jump out a window scene)
but what about aziraphale? sure we have no concrete proof it messed with him, but we also don't have proof to the contrary
"oh but he was just laughing about asking for a rubber duck". when has aziraphale ever actually been upfront about his feelings? he consistently outwardly acts like things are fine even when they very much aren't. i don't know about you but me personally? i wouldn't put it past him to be jokey about it when really it messed him up inside.
sure the holy water isn't painful to HIM. but he's down there knowing full well that it was supposed to be crowley in that bath. it was supposed to be the love of his life melting and dying in that bath. and it was to be put on display for all of hell to watch. in the same way that crowley was up in heaven knowing that gabriel told aziraphale to shut his stupid mouth and die already. the same way crowley knew they were reveling in ending aziraphale's life.
like, idk. i just think that maybe aziraphale also has a lot of trauma to work through and him working through it and his shitty coping mechanisms is part of the growth he needs to undergo in season 3.
#'but crowley was cast into hellfire that must've hurt way more than a bath'#need i remind you that demons straight up drink fire in hell?#as like. a refreshment.#the whole point is hellfire hurts angels not demons#and holy water hurts demons not angels#yeah yeah i'm being defensive but some people are out here painting aziraphale as some kind of villain?#and crowley as someone who can do no wrong#when in fact they are both very flawed and complex characters and that is what makes them good#good omens#crowley#aziraphale#aziracrow#ineffable husbands#good omens meta

I do think Sol has every right to throw Asuka into a wall as few times but I also ask for your proposed reason for why Sol would be making a big ass rocket to vist him. /gen
Oh, you know...
I genuinely don't know what else Sol could possibly be planning to do other than finish what he vowed to do at the end of Begin and at least once in almost every game release before and since haha
#asks#I'll actually be mad if Sol goes up there and him and Asuka are suddenly chill now#Because I think the end of Strive where Asuka removed the FoC from him was really poorly done#They've been building that up since Missing Link just to resolve it and give the impression they're friendly now in like a 5 minute scene#We had to wait for them to put Asuka in the game and glean from Sol's victory lines that he's still mad#I like Asuka as a morally complex villain so I don't want him to die and get removed from the story#But I do want him and Sol to have a wicked cool final battle or something#Sol's gonna be at a huge disadvantage without the FoC though. It'll be interesting#I also want to know what Asuka plans to do with the Flame of Corruption now that he has it in possession#It feels like there's potential there for someone/thing else to get infected with it and become the next villain lol#They could build up an INSANE amount of drama if they ended up in a situation where it's like#The only safe place to store the FoC where it won't fall into the wrong hands is to put it back into Sol until the end of time#Can you imagine...#I like that he's finally getting peace like he deserves but idk what they're gonna do with him in the long run now tbh#Sol ALWAYS gets number 1 on popularity polls so they're at least not going to shelve him anytime soon haha#Excited to see what Dual Rulers brings

not spop-related but i can't post this on my main blog so.
i do find it funny how most of the fan depictions of belos were far more interesting and detailed than s3 belos. i've seen fanart and fanfics of him where he's a complex villain struggling with religious guilt and then the canon is just like.. lmao yeah he's pure evil. kill him.
#i feel like belos is the opposite of catra#a potentially sympathetic villain who is reduced to Evil Man Who Deserves Death™#don't get me wrong i'm not saying he should have been forgiven or anything#he didn't deserve forgiveness#and he didnt really need a redemption arc#but did they have to throw away all of his complexity just to appease the anti steven universe community?#that's what it felt like#fun fact: you can write a sympathetic/complex villain and not redeem them#it's perfectly doable#but oh well#toh critical#toh salt#toh criticism#anti toh#toh discourse#belos#emperor belos#philip wittebane#bad writing#i was so excited for his character at first#especially around hollow mind era because the layers were peeling back#and we were seeing a really interesting and intimidating villain in the making#sigh#my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined

Miss Heed Tries To Guilt Trip Flug After He Again Calls Her Out On Her Shit
Miss Heed ( fake cries): Kenny... I think so very highly of you, I didn’t realize you think so low of me. Goodbye Kenny
[She opens up a trap door but luckily Flug got a jetpack and manages to avoid falling which scares Miss Heed as she runs away from him.]
#villainous#villanos#villainos#miss heed#dr. flug#flug#source: flug#as you can kind of tell i didn't like that line due to how manipulative and tone deaf it was#so it would make sense if miss heed totally said it because she would#i totally see her having this victim complex like stolas that refuses to let her be wrong about what she does#stolas#blitzo#stolitz#stolitz critical#stolas critical#helluva boss#helluva boss critical#anyone who is a helluva boss fan should see heed and she and stolas have so much in common

I'm working on a fic and was like 'how in the hell do you make LINGUANG JUN the least bit redeemable?'. I mean, /Linguang jun/ who tossed a developmentally four year old Mobei Jun to a pack of humans? The kid could have died. And then I saw a translation of the extras. It describes lgj as mbj's 'young uncle', says that he 'wasn't that much older than him (mbj)'. And I just- its a hell of a lot different, a Scar type tossing his nephew to the proverbial wolves than it is for a maybe dumb, maybe petty, maybe developmentally five or six year old to shove their annoying technically-nephew-who-in-age-and-context-is-more-like-a-brother-than-lgj's-actual-brother into a situation that the text implies was more frightening than actually /dangerous/. And that- well I can work with that.
#Yeah yeah yeah I know in text he doesn't have anything going for him#And maybe the translation i found is not perfect#But its what I'm going with#And I think its more compelling than 'I hate your dad and so I hate you'#And what the fuck is svsss about if not deepening the complexity of easily-written-off characters anyway?#Svsss#Mobei Jun#Linguang jun#Scum villain#Scum villains self saving system#Honestly I even like my version better than the 'mbj senior stole lgj's wife' story#Which I think is fanon anyway#But then I have five siblings and we spent most of our childhoods trying not trying to kill each other#And yeah uhuh a nice thoughtful person would feel bad for endangering their sort of little brother#But a person from the world and not from a morality tale (especially a little kid) would more likely grow resentful#And dig in their heels that they'd done nothing wrong and why was little bro such a crybaby anyway he doesn't even deserve to be king#It just makes sense to me in a way that other versions of it that I've read don't#Don't bug me if you don't like the translation#I'm working on fanfiction not on getting canon reprinted

How do I explain this? (Spoilers for Enstars Sanctuary story)
Sanctuary is the story of a guy who woke up in a strange world with weird looking monsters and empty streets with a guy who was his former theatre club president. Except the theatre club president (implied to be a bit of a cryptid except this world definitely has no magic) had somehow mentally regressed back to his five-year-old self, which is fine because he's a genius, and now the guy and his former club president have to deal with this strange place together. But the side story is that two of his friends are being shown around what is basically a cult disguised as an amusement park to indoctrinate people into believing they can become idols and apply to work in that industry. And there's also another side story in which the guy's other friend is being harassed by a middle aged man who's kidnapped their goddess, basically, and is also the mastermind behind the overarching plot in the villainous sense. Also, the former theatre club president's new team, specifically that team's leader, is perpetuating the idol cult because he's got a twisted obsession with idols and believes that to farm them is the only way they won't be discouraged by those with exceptional talent and skill.
But in reality, this is just the story of a lonely teenager who could only find a little bit of freedom to express his abandoned child self in a messed up system that another teenager (who is very smart but just doesn't understand human relationships) created because he cares about nothing but in reality cares about everything and perpetuates a cycle of constant destruction to keep his one obsession alive.
But even further than that, Sanctuary and the whole SS ARC is just a story of a bunch of high schoolers/recent high school graduates who want to sing getting tangled up in a very dangerous mafia-esque world and sometimes realizing that they should call the police or some law reinforcement but forgetting to do so every. single. time.
#note stop getting into media that offers such compelling philosophies that you blatantly disagree with challenge i guess?#i could go on a spiel about how eichi saying 'i need to continue this path of destruction for those victims i destroyed in the past'...#...is kind of self-perpetuating that cycle of destruction and teetering on using victim blaming#sort of like that one story i reblogged a while ago about the villain who counted every person they killed...#...and were brutally rebuffed by the hero#but that isnt to say i hate eichi...honestly i cant help but just feel sorry for him#because he obviously isnt as detached and or as smart as he tries to be#but he also is definitely not as in love with idols as he thinks he is rather than hes kind of obsessed with them which causes....problems#same with wataru (and whats with that mysterious old couple that im 90% sure are his foster parents?)#like i know theyre very complex and annoying and mysterious to the other characters#and they are insane. that i will not deny. if they were real id probably not be able to keep up#but as a reader theyre just lonely and definitely acting way cooler than they actually are (same with ibara sorry guys)#enstars#ensemble stars#fandom spamdom#stuff i say#enstars sanctuary spoilers#also i will say this....wataru and eichi deserve each other but also i want to pry them apart because they are NOT HELPING THE OTHER#by the way i say all of this from a point of deep amusement because this is very fun#dont take me too seriously cause im probably wrong or misinterpreting#need my disclaimer tag again but its not showing up so disclaimer these are all just my personal opinions#anyway i stand by my last post in saying the ra*bits members need a break#AND I DEFINITELY STAND BY MY DECLARATION THAT SOME SORT OF LAW REINFORCEMENT SHOULD BE CALLED#like i know that police arent great but there are CRIMES HAPPENING COME ON????#like take everything ive said on this blog as a complete joke except for that....the amount of times these teenagers have been...#...threatened with death/bodily harm/destruction of their beloved ones is kinda funny when they do it to each other#and kinda concerning when a shady middle aged man im pretty sure isnt going to be *that* bad in the end but fails in talk does it#i have rambled pardon me

that's genuinely so sweet i dont think you realise how much i appreciate things like this
oh bleugh i hate it when people just dont get a piece of media and ur just kinda sat there trying not to rant like 'you're all missing the fucking POINT'
#and the hunger games too? id be furious#something similar happened to me recently#okay so im very ashamed by this considering the fuss i kicked up about it but i CANNOT resist a show with dragons in it#so i eventually pirated all of house of the dragon and low and behold#youd have some of the most detailed worldbuilding ever and beautiful dragons and a ginormous budget for a fantasty world#and youd be enjoying it and then BOOM violence against women for literally no reason#it bugs the fuckkkk out of me but at least hotd has HUGE wlw undertones and the two main characters are actually women#and are COMPLEX? im not giving any compliments for this bc it's just not good enough but still it wasnt as awful as it has been#(*Looks at game of thrones*)#AND ANYWAY there's this woman in it called alicent hightower when i tell you i will defend her with my LIFE#and it's the typical 'female character made strong due to the trauma inflicted upon her by men'#and she is literally torn from her closest female friendship (love interest?) BECAUSE of men#and it becomes the ENTIRE FUCKING PLOT OF THE SHOW god it bugs me anyway#and it's made me superrrrrrrr protective of her bc not only do i adore her but she deserves so much better#like she's supposed to be the villain and the fandom are so thick that they treat her that way but im just like alicent get behind me#AND MY SISTER SAID SHE HATES HER#LIKE WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE SHOW AND MY SISTER JUST OUTRIGHT SAID SHE HATES ALICENT#I WAS LIKE NO YOU STUPID BITCH THIS IS WHAT THE MEN WANT ARE YOU JOKING YOU'RE FEEDING INTO IT#and i didnt know how to EXPLAIN to her why she was so wrong so im just there like why am i always right about everything#and everyone else is always so stupid why why why god im not you're strongest soldier#so yeah <3#ask

Those who do horrible things often don’t have very complex motivations, but they frequently have a strong vested interest in making everyone else think they have deeper reasons and a higher purpose
identifying hypocrisy isn't a good tool for confronting them; hypocrisy is a luxury or a flex, rarely a fatal flaw
“I don’t think that every villain in the world actually thinks they’re being a good guy, but I do think that everybody creates a value system that justifies the actions they’re taking, and and I think there’s a difference between those two things. Not everybody believes that they’re on the side of righteousness, but everybody has a way of justifying the actions they’re taking. Not every villain has to be a misunderstood hero, and in fact I think there are a lot of instances throughout history of people who were obviously doing the wrong thing and probably had an understanding of that on some level, but had some rationale or justification for it. A lot of villains in literature and media have these weird, Thanos-esque philosophies of what it is that they’re trying to do, and I think human motivation tends to come from more primal places than that. So a lot of the villains I write can be brilliant or clever (and, in fact, probably should be), but their motivation tends to be primal. They wanna be rich, they wanna have power, they wanna live forever. There’s something deep down that is, when you break it down, not too complex. Right? If you look at the real world, the people that are doing bad stuff don’t need complex motivations. They wanna rule the world! They wanna be rich! They wanna be unafraid that other people can ever screw them over, so they screw other people over. Evil is boring. Right? I kinda believe in the banality and mundanes of evil. Evil is just selfish impulses, which at the end of the day are really easy to understand. It’s easy to understand why people do bad things. It’s like “yeah, ok, you’re selfish and scared and cruel, I get it”. Being good is complex and beautiful and hard.”

I think the reason why Naruto fans get so passionate and upset about the series is because of how real it can be. Naruto isn’t about paragon heroes outdoing dastardly villains. It’s about human beings fighting tooth and nail to survive in a world surrounded by death. It’s about broken systems made and perpetuated by broken people.
The Hyuga clan isn’t just antagonistic or pretentious, they practice slavery.
The Uchiha clan weren’t just killed by some raging psychopath, they were systematically massacred.
Itachi isn’t just cruel to Sasuke because he’s a bad brother, he’s cruel because he’d been told time and time again that you can only survive by being cruel and he wants nothing more than for Sasuke to survive.
Nagato isn’t trying to take over the world just for the sake of power, he’s trying to take over the world because it beat him down to the point of believing that the only chance at peace there is is the world being forced into compliance through fear.
Iruka isn’t hard on Naruto just because he’s a strict teacher, he’s hard on Naruto because he knows from experience how unforgiving the world is towards orphans.
Kakashi isn’t just some silly and slightly lazy teacher, he’s a contract killer still grieving his loved ones and struggling to do better without knowing how he’s supposed to.
Sakura isn’t just a fangirl, she’s a normal girl in a very dangerous and abnormal world constantly being made to choose between what she’s supposed to do and what she feels.
Sasuke isn’t just some edgelord, he’s a survivor who lost everything then gets repeatedly told that he has to choose between keeping what he’s gained and doing better than his brother.
Naruto isn’t just trying to be the best Hokage there ever was, he’s trying to prove his worth to a society that abandoned him just for existing and, in a way, confirm his worth to himself.
The Naruto story is about humans trying to force themselves into the role of weapons because that’s what they were told they had to be. It’s a story where everyone is a perpetrator but no one is trying to do wrong. It’s a story where everyone is a victim but no one is a perfect victim.
The world and the characters aren’t simple and trying to simplify them only takes away from them. So of course we get passionate about showing off all the reasons why they shouldn’t be simplified and all of the ways they’re complicated. Of course we get upset when we see others simplifying them or selling certain aspects of their characters short. Of course we get upset when the series itself simplifies them. Of course we get upset when the series chooses to abandon them. Because it not only feels like the characters are giving up, it feels like the series is betraying anyone who chose to get invested in its complexities.
#If you ever wondered why I can’t bring myself to really hate any Naruto character#This is why#They’re all trying their best (mostly)#naruto#naruto classic#naruto shippuden#analysis#naruto analysis#fandom analysis#sorta#naruto uzumaki#sakura haruno#sasuke uchiha#kakashi hatake#iruka umino#nagato uzumaki#itachi uchiha#every once in a while I remember why I like this series#and I remember why I think Kishimoto is capable of being a good writer#more serious than usual#my stooff#slight#rambling#anti naruto ending#anti kishimoto#Edit: I worded something wrong

Crafting Compelling Morally Gray Characters: A Guide for Fiction Writers
In literature, there is often a clear distinction between good and evil. Heroes are portrayed as virtuous and villains as wicked. However, in recent years, there has been a rise in the popularity of morally gray characters - those who do not fit neatly into the categories of good or evil. These characters are complex, flawed, and often make decisions that challenge the reader's moral compass. In this guide, I'll help you explore the art of crafting compelling morally gray characters and how to make them stand out in your fiction writing.
What Are Morally Gray Characters?
Morally gray characters, also known as morally ambiguous characters, are those who do not conform to traditional notions of good or evil. They may have both positive and negative traits, and their actions may be motivated by a mix of good and bad intentions. These characters often blur the lines between right and wrong, making them more relatable and intriguing to readers.
Examples of Morally Gray Characters
Some well-known examples of morally gray characters include:
Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series: Initially portrayed as a villain, Snape's true motivations and actions are revealed to be more complex and morally ambiguous.
Jaime Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire series: Known for his arrogance and incestuous relationship with his sister, Jaime's character evolves throughout the series, showcasing his internal struggle between his duty and his personal desires.
Walter White from Breaking Bad: A high school chemistry teacher turned methamphetamine producer, Walter's character is constantly torn between his desire for power and his moral compass.
Why Are Morally Gray Characters Compelling?
Morally gray characters are compelling because they challenge the reader's perceptions of right and wrong. They are not easily categorized as heroes or villains, making them more relatable and human. These characters also add depth and complexity to a story, making it more interesting and thought-provoking.
The Power of Relatability
One of the main reasons morally gray characters are so compelling is because they are relatable. They are not perfect, and they make mistakes, just like real people. This makes them more human and allows readers to connect with them on a deeper level. When readers can see themselves in a character, it creates a stronger emotional connection to the story.
The Element of Surprise
Morally gray characters also add an element of surprise to a story. Their actions and decisions may not always align with what the reader expects, keeping them on the edge of their seat. This unpredictability makes the story more engaging and can lead to unexpected plot twists.
The Exploration of Morality
Morally gray characters also allow for a deeper exploration of morality in a story. By challenging traditional notions of good and evil, these characters force readers to question their own moral compass and consider the gray areas of morality. This can lead to thought-provoking discussions and a deeper understanding of complex moral issues.
How to Craft Morally Gray Characters
Crafting morally gray characters requires a delicate balance of positive and negative traits, as well as a deep understanding of their motivations and internal struggles. Here are some tips for creating compelling morally gray characters in your writing.
Give Them a Strong Motivation
Every character, regardless of their moral alignment, should have a strong motivation for their actions. For morally gray characters, this motivation should be complex and not easily defined as purely good or evil. It could be a desire for power, revenge, or even a sense of duty. This motivation will drive their decisions and actions throughout the story.
Show Their Flaws and Vulnerabilities
Morally gray characters are not perfect, and they should not be portrayed as such. They should have flaws and vulnerabilities that make them more relatable and human. These flaws could be physical, emotional, or moral, and they should play a role in the character's development and decisions.
Create Internal Conflict
One of the defining characteristics of morally gray characters is their internal conflict. They are torn between their good and bad tendencies, and this struggle should be evident in their thoughts and actions. This internal conflict adds depth to the character and makes them more relatable to readers.
Avoid Stereotypes
When crafting morally gray characters, it's important to avoid falling into stereotypes. These characters should not be one-dimensional or defined solely by their moral ambiguity. They should have unique personalities, backgrounds, and motivations that make them stand out as individuals.
Show Their Growth and Development
As with any well-written character, morally gray characters should experience growth and development throughout the story. They should learn from their mistakes and make decisions that challenge their moral compass. This growth and development will make them more dynamic and interesting to readers.
How to Make Morally Gray Characters Stand Out
With the rise in popularity of morally gray characters, it's important to make yours stand out in a sea of similar characters. Here are some tips for making your morally gray characters unique and memorable.
Give Them a Distinctive Voice
A character's voice is an essential part of their identity. It should be unique and reflective of their personality and motivations. For morally gray characters, their voice should reflect their internal conflict and the complexity of their moral alignment.
Create a Strong Backstory
A character's backstory can provide valuable insight into their motivations and actions. For morally gray characters, a strong backstory can help explain their moral ambiguity and add depth to their character. It can also create empathy and understanding for their decisions.
Use Foils to Highlight Their Morality
Foils are characters who contrast with the main character, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. For morally gray characters, foils can be used to showcase their moral ambiguity and challenge their beliefs. This can add depth to the character and create interesting dynamics between them and other characters.
