How dexterous are phocid hands? I I know they’re fully capable of various works like weaving, intricate tattoos and stone carvings but is there any special aid they use to do this or are they comparable to a typical human and improve with practice and time at a similar rate to us? I’m wondering things like how writing utensils and other tools are shaped! I imagine a pencil would look different for lots of different creatures.
Phocids are actually quite unique among sirenians because their hands are, mechanically, completely unaltered human hands. They've got a blubber layer and different skin composition but the hand bones and the ability to grip and manipulate tools are completely comparable to a human hand of the same size. When the aquatic Sirenians were being engineered, phocids' hands were not changed from the basic human blueprint because there was no need; they were models of tail-driven aquatic locomotion.
^ phocid hands. They have four fingers each consisting of three phalanges, an opposable thumb with two phalanges, and fingernails (fingernails are very important for tool manipulation). because phocid hands are not really designed to bear weight despite them being quadrupedal, they can suffer from wrist and elbow pain if they spend a lot of time on land.
when working with slender tools they would need expanded grips (like the padded pencil grips you can get to reduce wrist pain)
Just to see what I could come up with I made an ink-pen with an expanded bowl for phocids to grip onto. The bulb part is the refillable ink reservoir. Obviously this type of writing cannot be done underwater. I think most writing utensils would need to be adapted to phocid hands not because of how they work mechanically but just because of their size.
Underwater, the main writing system is woven. Signs are made using knotted and interwoven lengths of waterweed which can be read at a glance, but also read by touch, as well. This is important to phocids because their necks are quite long, their arms are quite short, and sometimes they can't actually look at what their hands are doing. So most reading and writing is done without even looking; they make a cat's cradle kind of web of fibres and knit out a message. sitting back to read a nice book is, for a phocid, a matter of unrolling a tapestry scroll and running it between their fingers to feel the tactile woven pattern.

The room was dimly lit, the city skyline painting fractured light across the sleek, polished floor. You found yourself in the lion's den—a private meeting room in Bonten’s high-rise headquarters. You weren’t sure how you’d ended up here, caught in a game far beyond your comprehension. But one thing was certain: Mikey sat at the head of the table, and his presence was suffocating.
Around him, the other executives watched you with unreadable expressions. Sanzu twirled a knife between his fingers, a wicked grin playing on his lips. Kokonoi leaned back in his chair, scanning you with a mix of curiosity and mild disinterest. Rindou and Ran exchanged glances, like they were betting on your survival odds.
Mikey, however, didn’t move. His black eyes seemed to pierce through you, stripping away any pretense of courage. “You’ve been following us,” he said, his voice as soft as silk and twice as dangerous.
You stiffened, the weight of their gazes making your knees weak. “It’s not what it looks like,” you stammered, clutching your bag tightly. “I—I was just delivering something. I had no idea who you were.”
“Lying won’t help you,” Kokonoi said lazily, his tone carrying a warning.
Sanzu chuckled, leaning forward with a gleam of mischief in his eyes. “She’s trembling. Cute.”
“Enough,” Mikey’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. His tone wasn’t loud, but it silenced the room instantly. “What were you delivering?”
You hesitated, but the weight of his gaze made it impossible to resist. You reached into your bag and pulled out a small, wrapped package. “It’s...just a package. I don’t know what’s in it. I was paid to deliver it, that’s all.”
Mikey extended his hand, and you hesitantly placed the package in his palm. He unwrapped it slowly, revealing a stack of documents. His expression didn’t change as he scanned them, but you could feel the shift in the air. Whatever the papers contained, it was enough to make him lean back in his chair, his gaze settling on you once more.
“You’re either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid,” he said after a long pause. “Do you have any idea who you’re dealing with?”
You shook your head, words failing you.
“You belong to us now,” he declared, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Until I figure out who sent you and why, you’ll stay close. Very close.”
Mikey’s declaration hung in the air like a noose. The room was silent except for the faint hum of the city outside. You didn’t dare move. Your pulse raced as his dark eyes bore into you, unwavering and unreadable. His command had been absolute, leaving no room for negotiation.
“You’ll stay here,” he said coolly, gesturing to the room with an almost lazy flick of his wrist. “I’ll decide what to do with you.”
“Here?” you blurted before you could stop yourself. The word slipped out, shaky and uncertain, and you immediately regretted it. Mikey’s expression didn’t shift, but the slightest tilt of his head made your stomach churn.
“Did I stutter?” His voice was soft but lethal, like a blade sliding from its sheath. “Or do you think you can tell me no?”
Before you could respond, Sanzu let out a low chuckle from across the room, his grin wide and unsettling. “I like this one. Got some fight in her. Let’s see how long that lasts.”
“Not your call, Sanzu,” Mikey said without looking at him, his tone colder than the steel glinting in Sanzu’s hand. It was a subtle reminder of the hierarchy here. A reminder you were now a part of, whether you liked it or not.
Kokonoi leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table as he regarded you with a speculative gaze. “She’s trouble, Mikey. Trouble wrapped in a pretty package. If we’re keeping her, she’ll need watching.”
Ran smirked, brushing his long hair back casually. “I could volunteer. She seems my type.”
“Enough,” Mikey cut in again, this time sharper. His attention returned to you, his eyes dark and calculating. He rose slowly, and the weight of his presence grew tenfold as he approached. His steps were silent, deliberate, the kind that made you want to retreat but froze you in place instead.
When he stopped in front of you, you couldn’t bring yourself to look up. Your heart hammered as his fingers gently tilted your chin, forcing you to meet his gaze. His touch was surprisingly light, almost teasing, but the power behind it was unmistakable.
“You’ll stay under my watch,” he murmured, his voice low and intimate, like he was sharing a secret. “And you’ll follow my rules. Understand?”
Your breath hitched, your mind racing as you tried to process the dangerous intensity in his eyes. You managed a nod, your voice barely above a whisper. “Yes.”
“Good girl,” he said, his lips curling into the faintest smirk. The words sent a jolt down your spine, equal parts fear and something you didn’t want to name. He straightened, letting his hand drop, but the warmth of his touch lingered, an unspoken reminder of his control.
“Take her to one of the suites,” he said to Kokonoi, his tone businesslike now. “And make sure she has everything she needs.”
“And by everything?” Kokonoi asked with a raised brow, his usual sly smile tugging at his lips.
“Nothing extravagant,” Mikey replied, his gaze still locked on you. “She’s not a guest. She’s an asset.”
Mikey lingered far too close, his dark eyes pinning you in place. The faint trace of his breath against your skin made your pulse race, and though every instinct told you to pull away, you couldn’t move. His touch was deceptively gentle as his fingers slid down your jaw, grazing your neck before he withdrew entirely.
“You’ll do as I say,” he murmured, stepping back with an air of calm authority. “And maybe, just maybe, you’ll get out of this alive.”
The unspoken threat made your stomach churn, but before you could respond, Mikey’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his eyes narrowing as he read the message. The air shifted immediately, tension crackling like a live wire.
“Sanzu,” he said, his voice sharp and cutting.
As if summoned, the man appeared in the doorway, his ever-present grin faltering slightly at Mikey’s tone. “What’s the problem, boss?”
“Someone’s been playing games,” Mikey said, holding the phone up for Sanzu to see. Though you couldn’t read the screen, whatever it was clearly serious enough to darken Mikey’s expression further. “Our visitor might not be here by chance after all.”
Sanzu’s gaze flicked to you, his grin returning, but now with a dangerous edge. “I told you she was too interesting.”
“Find out who sent her,” Mikey ordered, his tone low and commanding. “And make sure they understand the consequences.”
Sanzu’s laugh was unsettling, like the crackle of flames. “Oh, this’ll be fun.”
“Wait,” you blurted, panic rising in your chest. “I told you, I don’t know anything! I’m not working for anyone—I’m just a courier!”
Mikey turned back to you, his expression unreadable, but there was something cold and calculating in his gaze. “If that’s true, you’ll have nothing to worry about.” His head tilted slightly, almost mockingly. “But if you’re lying…”
He didn’t finish the sentence, but he didn’t need to. The implication hung heavy in the room.
“You’re staying here,” he continued, his tone final. “Until I know who you are—and why you’re really here.”
Before you could argue, Mikey turned to leave, Sanzu following closely behind. But just as Mikey stepped out, he paused in the doorway. Without looking back, he said one last thing that sent a chill down your spine.
“Don’t get comfortable. This is just the beginning.”
The door shut behind him with a resolute click, leaving you alone in the eerie silence. Your heart thundered in your chest as you stared at the closed door, the weight of Mikey’s words settling over you like a storm cloud. Just as you took a shaky breath, the phone on the desk buzzed—a single, ominous notification lighting up the screen.
It read: "We know where you are."

i lied lol im also dropping some s4 thoughts. i've been doing some thinking about s4 vitalasy & zam recently (when am i ever not thinking about s4 vitalasy & zam) and fairy tales . from vitalasy's perspective they're in the crane wife story, or a similar story. from zam's perspective they're in bluebeard. in both cases you've got one partner keeping a secret in a secret room, and as soon as it's discovered everything collapses and they can't truly stay together anymore. but in the crane wife the secret is self-sacrifice and in bluebeard the secret is hurting others. (notably these are also both gendered--the self-sacrificial victim is the wife, the murderer is the husband. and in lifesteal they're obviously both men and are not playing out traditional fairy tale gendered dynamics lol. this is part of why there isn't a clearcut answer to which of them is right about which story they're in.) either way there is a question hiding in the margins: if the secret is never revealed, will the wife die or will they stay together happily? we don't know. they don't either. they have to open the door. this is how the story goes. there is no version of the story where they don't open the door. the important thing is that the one you love has a room they are hiding from you, with a secret that they know will tear the two of you apart, and you enter it anyway, and things are never the same.
#mcyt#lifesteal#princezam#vitalasy#zam#......#vitalazam#you could argue that vitalasy is 'right' about the story he's in in that he does in fact kill himself & not zam#but notably! he did in fact at least sometimes have a plan to finish the prison and put zam in it!#and his ORIGINAL plans were neither of those things#and the literal [what was in the vault] was in fact a threat to others more than to himself yk#so. eh. idk. i do think about this though#and i think a LOT about the song Stranger by the Mechanisms & vitalazam#this was never planned/you were never meant to know....#that actually might go in my s4 vitalasy web weave. if i ever make it#therapists dni#any british ants in the chat?#from the house that we made our home#anyway idk if this 'actually' 'works'#luckily things dont have to work. for me to chew drywall abt them

web weaving is my favorite kind of poetry because so many people have just enough similar experiences that you can take that and make something more out of it. so many people have felt things and maybe they're separated by time or by distance or by some other cosmic thing but you get brought together anyways!!!! it's like you're threading the human experience!!!! you are creating life out of life!!!!!!!!
#puppytxt#GRAH sorry its 1am im crying over them#i want to web weave but i dont know where to even begin...#im a secret sucker for poetry that takes something that has already been made and morphs it into something else#like what ive just mentioned and blackout poetry GRAH its so good

Hooking rugs that look like dogs
Here's how I do it:
The process I use is called rug hooking (not latch hook or punch needle or tufting, though it is the forerunner of the latter two techniques). Rugs are hooked by pulling loops of fabric strips or yarn through the holes of a base fabric with a coarse open weave, like burlap, or linen, or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the fabric with a squat-handled hook whose business end is shaped like a crochet hook. There are no knots and the loops aren't sewed down in any way. The whole thing stays put just by the tension of all those loops packed together in the weave of the foundation fabric.
This isn't a true detailed tutorial but a walk-through of my particular process. The same information is on my web page, emilyoleary.com .
I hook with yarn, rather than with cut strips of wool fabric, which is what many rug hookers use. I can get a looser, more organic distribution of loops with yarn than I could with wool strips, which are hooked in neat lines.
Mostly I use wool yarn. In terms of yarn weight, I can use DK, worsted, or Aran. If I'm using thicker yarn, I leave more holes un-hooked; if I'm using finer yarn, I hook more densely or double up lengths of it. I particularly like using single ply yarns (like Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride or Malabrigo Worsted). I don't keep count, but I think I usually use around two dozen types and colors of yarn per dog.
This is my yarn wall in my apartment. Mostly brown and gray yarn!
I start from a small drawing in my sketchbook, then I head to FedEx office to use a copy machine, blowing up the drawing repeatedly and experimenting with how big the dog rug should be.
After transferring the image onto my linen, I immediately go over it with Sharpie, because the Saral is really difficult to see and really easy to rub off.
The rug is held taut by a PVC quilting frame that I set on my lap.
I push my hook down through the fabric with my right hand and my left hand stays below the fabric and guides the yarn while I pull it up and through with the hook. Not every hole in the fabric is hooked. Hooking every hole would make the rug too dense. I do hook pretty densely, though-- If you pick up one of my rugs you’ll see they have a slight curl to them, which is because they’re hooked pretty tight. I'm using all different weights and types of yarn, so it's a challenge to keep the overall tension even.
I hook my loops at varying heights to create a very low relief. Sometimes I trim the loops to make them fluffier or wispier or to shape a particular part. I look at a reference photo while I work and pull out and redo sections a lot.
My q-snap frame can accommodate the growing dog rug. I have extenders to make it bigger and I can clamp around my hooking.
The back of a rug looks like lines of little stitches. The lines are little worm trails snaking around because lines of hooking are not supposed to cross over each other. It's important to start a new length of yarn rather than cross over a stitch you already made! I read this when I first started and took it to heart. It makes it much easier to undo and redo hooking if you have to (and I redo sections A Lot). It also keeps the back from getting too bulky and resulting in uneven wear on the back of a functional rug that gets floor use.
When I’m done hooking everything I turn the rug over and brush watered-down Sobo glue on the edges of the dog, making sure to get one or two of the outermost lines of hooking. I do a couple coats of this thinned out glue. I'm careful not to use so much that it seeps to the front of the rug. When the glue is dry I cut the rug out, but I don't cut so close that the loops don't have any linen to keep them in.
It generally takes me at least several months to finish one dog rug. My hooking frame and yarn bag are very portable (though bulky) so I can hook out and about at coffee shops or the library or a brewery if there's enough space and light.
Hooking in the wild makes me an ambassador for making things in general and rug hooking in particular. I answer people's questions and always emphasize how relatively easy it is to get started hooking. Sometimes I get anxious that other people will hook rugs that look like mine but better, but I think that working in a traditional medium means you should share your knowledge for the good of the craft.

okay so I was doing a Research™️ about ancient Greek etymology as one does and I found some Things that made me want to Violently Claw My Arms Off please allow me to force feed you my discoveries
So there are 2 words for "not" in ancient Greek, depending on the context: ou and mē. Having introduced himself in the Cyclops episode as " ou tis", or No-man, he then stabs Polyphemus in the eye. When Polyphemus' brothers come to check on him, they say this:
"... surely no man [mē tis] is carrying off your sheep? Surely no man [mē tis] is trying to kill you either by fraud or by force?"
Right after this, after the other cyclopes ditch Polyphemus, Odysseus's inner monologue goes something like this:
"Then they went away, and I laughed inwardly at the success of my clever strategem [metis]." (pronounced mEH-Tis)
Now, there's a difference between mē tis and metis. [mē tis] (pronounced mEH-Tis with a space between the syllables) is the literal translation for "no man". Metis is a word for extreme intelligence/cunning, which is something Odysseus is famous for.
Now, there are several examples of abuse of metis/intelligence in the Odyssey, but I think the juxtaposition between [mē tis], or the concept of anonymity, and metis, or extreme intelligence, is REALLY interesting. Odysseus's adoption of the title "No-man" was characteristic of metis--it was a really smart move that simultaneously hid him from the cyclops and avoided any future consequences. It was a highly effective strategy all wrapped up in a nest little package with a bow on it.
But when he revealed himself as Odysseus of Ithaca, effectively throwing off No-man (anonymity and [mē tis]), that was characterized as idiocy--he's essentially doxxed himself, and now he's doing to (spoiler alert) get tossed around the Mediterranean by Poseidon for the next 10 years.
This is really interesting because it lets you see the parallels/codependency between metis(intelligence) and humility. When Odysseus refused to allow himself to go unnoticed (hubris) he suffered for it. BUT when he declined instant glory/satisfaction (kleos) in order to achieve the long term goal of survival, he was rewarded with Athena's favor (pay attention. This part is important).
And this situation repeats itself MULTIPLE TIMES in the Odyssey--the EXACT SAME THING happens near the end of the book, with the suitors. When. Odysseus is dressed as a beggar and the suitors/Antinious are abusing him, he ACTIVELY CHOOSES not to react--he doesn't stand up and rip off his disguise and start hollering "TIS I, ODYSSEUS OF ITHACA! FEAR MY WRATH"
No. He sits there patiently and waits. He plans and schemes and quietly orchestrates their downfall without alerting them of it. Why? Because he learned his lesson the first time this happened. He buried his rage and adopted what was, according to Grace LA Franz, a more feminine form of metis, weaving a web of destruction for his enemies that ultimately resulted in their total annihilation (see Weaving a Way to Nostos: Odysseus and Feminine Metis in the Odyssey by Grace LaFranz). His patience allowed him to win the whole prize--no questions asked, no 10-year-long-business-trip strings attached--just the sweetness of a full victory. And he is, once again, rewarded with Athena's favor--both in the battle with the suitors and in the aftermath (cleanup/reuniting with Penelope).
This really reinforces the idea in the Odyssey that Odysseus's defining characteristic is not just his intelligence--it's his ability to learn from his mistakes. He used what he learned at the Lotus Eaters Island against Polyphemus--the Lotus Eaters drugged his men, so he drugged Polyphemus. He used what he learned from Circe and Polyphemus against the suitors--Circe used false sweetness and honeyed words to lure his men into a trap, so that's exactly what he did to the suitors. His hubris on Polyphemus' island cost his whole crew their lives, so he intentionally left well enough alone until the right time. He didn't just learn from his failures--he turned them into BATTLE STRATEGY.
i don't care what anyone says that is completely totally and objectively awesome
