When you think of Eastern European Jewish cuisine, which words come to mind? Light? Healthy? Plant based? Probably not. Heavy, homey and meat-centric are more like it. 
Fania Lewando died during the Holocaust, but had she been given the full length of her years, Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine may have taken a turn to the vegetarian side and we might all be eating vegetarian kishke and spinach cutlets in place of brisket.
Lewando is not a household name. In fact, she would have been lost to history had it not been for an unlikely turn of events. Thanks to a serendipitous find, her 1937 work, “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook” (“Vegetarish-Dietisher Kokhbukh”in Yiddish), was saved from oblivion and introduced to the 21st century.
Vilna in the 1930s, where Lewando and her husband Lazar made their home, was a cosmopolitan city with a large Jewish population. Today, it is the capital of Lithuania but it was then part of Poland. Lewando opened a vegetarian eatery called The Vegetarian Dietetic Restaurant on the edge of the city’s Jewish quarter. It was a popular spot among both Jews and non-Jews, as well as luminaries of the Yiddish-speaking world. (Even renowned artist Marc Chagall signed the restaurant’s guest book.)
Lewando was a staunch believer in the health benefits of vegetarianism and devoted her professional life to promoting these beliefs. She wrote: “It has long been established by the highest medical authorities that food made from fruit and vegetables is far healthier and more suitable for the human organism than food made from meat.” Plus, she wrote, vegetarianism satisfies the Jewish precept of not killing living creatures. 
We know little about her life other than she was born Fania Fiszlewicz in the late 1880s to a Jewish family in northern Poland. She married Lazar Lewando, an egg merchant from what is today Belarus and they eventually made their way to Vilna. They did not have children. 
Lewando, to quote Jeffrey Yoskowitz, author of “The Gefilte Manifesto” was “a woman who challenged convention;” a successful entrepreneur, which was a rarity among women of the time. She supervised a kosher vegetarian kitchen on an ocean liner that traveled between Poland and the United States, and gave classes on nutrition to Jewish women in her culinary school. 
“The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook” was sold in Europe and the U.S. in Lewando’s day, but most of the copies were lost or destroyed during the Second World War. In 1995, a couple found a copy of the cookbook at a second-hand book fair in England. They understood the importance of a pre-war, Yiddish-language, vegetarian cookbook written by a woman, so purchased it and sent it to the YIVO Institute’s offices in New York. There, it joined the millions of books, periodicals and photos in YIVO’s archives. 
It was discovered again by two women who visited YIVO and were captivated by the book’s contents and colorful artwork. They had it translated from Yiddish to English so it could be enjoyed by a wider audience.
Like many Ashkenazi cooks, salt was Lewando’s spice, butter her flavor and dill her herb. The book is filled with dishes you’d expect: kugels and blintzes and latkes; borscht and many ways to use cabbage. There’s imitation gefilte fish and kishke made from vegetables, breadcrumbs, eggs and butter. Her cholent (a slow-cooked Sabbath stew) recipes are meat-free, including one made with prune, apple, potatoes and butter that is a cross between a stew and a tzimmes.
There are also some surprises.
Did you know it was possible to access tomatoes, eggplants, asparagus, lemons, cranberries, olive oil, Jerusalem artichokes, blueberries and candied orange peel in pre-war Vilna? There’s a French influence, too, such as recipes for mayonnaise Provencal and iles flottante, a meringue-based dessert, and a salad of marinated cornichons with marinated mushrooms. 
“It’s hard to know who the target audience was for this cookbook,” said Eve Jochnowitz, its English-language translator. “We know from contemporary memoirs that people in Vilna did not have access to these amazing amounts of butter, cream and eggs,” she said. “Lewando was writing from a somewhat privileged and bourgeois position.” While many of these recipes may have been aspirational given the poverty of the Jews at the time, the cookbook demonstrates that it was possible to obtain these ingredients in Vilna, should one have the resources to do so. 
While the cookbook is filled with expensive ingredients, there is also, said Jochnowitz, “a great attention to husbanding one’s resources. She was ahead of her time in the zero-waste movement.” Lewando admonishes her readers to waste nothing. Use the cooking water in which you cooked your vegetables for soup stock. Use the vegetables from the soup stock in other dishes. “Throw nothing out,” she writes in the cookbook’s opening essay. “Everything can be made into food.” Including the liquid from fresh vegetables; Lewando instructed her readers on the art of vitamin drinks and juices, with recipes for Vitamin-Rich Beet Juice and Vitamin-Rich Carrot Juice. “This was very heroic of her,” said Jochnowitz. “There were no juice machines! You make the juice by grating the vegetables and then squeezing the juice out by hand.”
Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, a Jewish scholar and Jewish cookbook collector, describes Lewando as “witty.” “She is showing us,” she said, “that once you eliminate meat and fish, you still have an enormous range of foods you can prepare.” Lewando is about “being creative, imaginative and innovative both with traditional dishes and with what she is introducing that is remote from the traditional repertoire.” She does that in unexpected ways. Her milchig (dairy) matzah balls, for example, have an elegance and lightness to them. She instructs the reader to make a meringue with egg whites, fold in the yolks, then combine with matzah meal, melted butter and hot water. Her sauerkraut salad includes porcini mushrooms. One of her kugels combines cauliflower, apples, sliced almonds and candied orange peel.
There is much that, through contemporary eyes, is missing in “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook.” The recipes do not give step-by-step instructions; rather you will find general directions. Heating instructions are vague, ranging from a “not-too-hot-oven” to a “warm oven” to a “hot oven.” Lewando assumes the reader’s familiarity with the kitchen that today’s cookbook writer would not. 
Lewando and her husband were listed in the 1941 census of the Vilna Ghetto but not in the census of 1942. It is believed that they both died or were killed while attempting to escape. “She really was a visionary,” said Jochnowitz. “It is an unbearable tragedy that she did not live to see the future that she predicted and helped to bring about.”But in cooking her recipes, said Yoskowitz, as dated and incomplete as some of them may be, the conversation between then and now continues.

How to follow a Mediterranean Greek diet
The Mediterranean diet naturally expands throughout the coastal countries of South Europe, North Africa and the Middle East but there are some small differences between their cuisines. So here I am writing specifically about the Greek version of the Mediterranean diet, known for its delicious, natural flavours and its significant health benefits.

Eat daily:
Olive oil: the pillar, the liquid green gold of the Mediterranean Greek diet. Olive oil should be used ideally exclusively for all purposes. It's dressing salads, it's used in cooking and in fact it's traditionally what is used in frying too. Replace all types of oils, butter and margarine with olive oil even when making pastries. The only problem here is that outside of the Mediterranean basin olive oil can be pricey, however that's the foundation the diet is based on. If you are interested in following the traditional Greek diet for taste or health purposes, it is good to really incorporate olive oil in your daily cooking. If it’s not possible to afford buying olive oil all the time (although you could balance it out by not buying other oils and butter), a non-Greek-typical but equivalent alternative could be avocado oil. However, I doubt avocado oil or any other oil can remotely compare to olive oil in health properties, taste or in any other positive quality 🫒
Vinegar: Just like olive oil, vinegar is a very important ingredient and is also used in natural remedies However, it can hurt a sensitive GI tract if consumed in large portions. A little bit of it added to meals frequently is very healthy. Apple cider vinegar is also very loved and used in salads often 🍇
Vegetables: no portion can be too much (wild greens, garlic, onions, cauliflowers, cucumbers, eggplants, beets, peppers, spinach, artichokes, zucchini, peas, lettuce, the list never ends). Tomatoes and broccoli are recent additions to the Greek diet however they were integrated perfectly to the Greek cuisine. In general, all vegetables can be enjoyed freely with some moderation in the potatoes, especially when fried 🥗
Fruits: grapes, berries, apples, melons, cherries, figs, prunes, sour cherries, peaches, pomegranates are the most historically loved fruits in the Greek diet. Since the middle ages citruses like the orange, the lemon and the mandarin are more and more loved. Greeks nowadays use lemon almost more than vinegar and both have become integral components of the Greek diet. Obviously, tropical fruits like, say, banana, mango, grapefruit are not present in the traditional Greek diet, however all fruits are good fruits and you can enjoy them freely 🍎
Legumes. Eat freely to the tolerance of your body. Legumes can be too heavy for some GI tracts. Legumes are a great source of protein and fibre. Choose brown lentils, white beans, fava beans, chickpeas, giant beans and black eyed peas the most 🫘
Nuts, seeds: almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, peanuts etc. Eat as much as your body can take, because everybody is different 🥜
Mushrooms: mushroom it up! A great healthy way to have them is grilled with herbs and plain or apple cider vinegar dressing 🍄‍🟫
Whole grains: this is the traditional way to eat grains. Brown bread, oats, whole wheat pasta 🌾
Fish and seafood: find and eat them fresh. Instead of buying them deep frozen from the big markets, find local fish stores if your place is coastal and has them. Eat both large but especially small and medium sized fish. Some fish like salmon and tuna should ideally not be consumed daily due to their high levels of mercury and fats 🐟🎣🍤
Herbs and spices. Feel free to use as much as you want however if you are interested also in the flavours of the Greek diet besides the health benefits, a tip is that Greek dishes do not contain extremely hot spices 🌿
Water: A lot of water daily and, mind you, plain clear mineral water. No flavoured water, definitely not sparkling water and ideally no other liquids in place of the water. I mean, sure you can have liquids but you should ALSO have plain water 💧
Eat a few times per week:
Poultry: Poultry and lean meats entered the Greek cuisine mostly after the Middle Ages however they are nowadays enjoyed as part of the Greek Mediterranean diet because they are tasty and healthier than other types of meat. Chicken has become especially popular in the Greek cuisine. Other birds are the pheasant, the quail, the turkey and more sparsely the duck 🍗
Eggs: eggs are healthy and should be consumed a few times per week but not daily because they can cause a rise in cholesterol levels 🥚
Dairy: Greeks LOVE dairy products, especially the various types of cheese, however they are often irritating to the GI tract and they are linked with rises in the level of inflammation in the body. This is why you should ideally limit them to a few times per week. One exception is the yoghurt, which is fermented and can be perhaps consumed more frequently due to its beneficial properties. Important note: if you want to follow the Greek diet, you should ideally opt for milk and other dairy products from goats and sheep! Cow milk is not traditionally used in the Greek cuisine often and sheep and goat milk are significantly healthier and more nutritious. The only drawback is the stronger smell, however if you can get past that, it is strongly advised to switch to those instead of cow milk. Another note: what is known as “Greek yoghurt” in western countries is not in fact a true Greek yoghurt. What you call Greek yoghurt is to us simply a strained yoghurt, a yoghurt from which the whey has been removed. Sometimes in western markets (and in Greek “modern” dessert yoghurt products) butterfat and powdermilk is added to them and they are mostly made of cow’s milk. Again, a traditional Greek yoghurt is made of sheep, goat milk or a mix of both and is unstrained. It also has a trademark thickened skin on its top (dunno if this is the actual term lol) which is in fact the part of the yoghurt that contains the most nutrients and personally it’s the tastiest part of the yoghurt but apparently it is not for everyone. As an example, a study showed that an unstrained sheep yoghurt has more protein, more omega-3 fatty acids and minerals yet fewer calories and fats than a strained cow yoghurt 🍦🧀
Wine: in small portions, like a small glass up to a few times per week and always in combination with your meal. You don’t drink it to get hammered, you drink it for the health benefits it has in very moderate quantities and for the reasonable mild euphoria it causes before it becomes harmful. The GI tract is linked to the brain and is detrimentally influenced by negative emotions. This is why it is important to try to be in a good mood, relaxed and peaceful when you sit down to eat. A sip of wine now and then can be good for that 🍷
Eat once per week or ideally less:
Red meat like pork or beef. In fact, beef should be the one most avoided not only because it is indeed the rarest of the common meats used in traditional Greek cuisine but also because you can’t separate the fat from the meat as easily as with pork. To follow the Greek style in a healthy way opt for goat, then lamb or pork and make beef your most occasional meat dish 🥩
Processed meats should be eaten rarely. If you are in a mood for it though, opt for Greek style sausages with herbs in or bacon at most. Cured meats like ham are better to be avoided but turkey is the healthiest of them. They are not a part of a traditional Greek cuisine though.
Refined grains can be enjoyed weekly but should not replace whole grains
Pastries. What’s new, pastries are not ideal for health. However, if you are yearning for something sweet, if you want to keep it healthy as much as possible in the “Greek way”, opt for desserts made of healthy ingredients like honey, nuts, olive oil and fruits. Chocolate came to Greece in the 19th century, however it has become an integral part of confectionery since then. Opt ideally for dark chocolate, combined with nuts or fruits such as oranges and prunes. Greeks especially love chocolate combined with nuts.
Soft and sugary drinks. Avoid them overall, especially the processed products in the markets. If you need a sweet drink really bad, you can keep it traditional by making your own sweet lemonade, sour cherry, pomegranate etc drink at home. You could also enjoy small quantities of lemon or mastic liquors which are good for digestion.
BONUS TIPS & PHILOSOPHY:
Try to find mastic if it’s available where you live. The mastic is a resin produced from the mastic tree, a species endemic to the Greek island of Chios and a small part of the opposite coast of Turkey. It has numerous beneficial properties, especially for digestion and gut health, and it combines them with a very pleasant fresh and sweet flavour. You can find it in gums that boost digestion, in drinks, in pastries and even in non-edible products like toothpastes. Learn about it and give it a try, no matter if you are interested in following Greek diet or not.
Greek cuisine does not go berserk on as many ingredients as possible (however Greeks typically add more ingredients than, say, Italians and perhaps fewer than the Middle Easterners). Don’t worry about adding as many foods and nutrients in one single dish. The most important thing in Greek cuisine philosophy is to pick the finest ingredients. Avoid deep frozen or precooked and processed ingredients. Pick whole fruits and vegetables from your local small grocery store. For example, don’t buy a watermelon slice in a zelatin bag from the supermarket. Take the whole freaking watermelon home. You heard me right. It’s heavy, yes, but you would be surprised how much tastier and healthier it is this way. Go to the butcher for meat. Go to the specific cheese shop for cheese. Go to the fisherman for fish and seafood. Go to the pastry shop and get a nice dessert instead of buying candies from the market.
Remember that in moderation you can eat most of the foods you desire, especially if they are not processed foods. There is nothing about the Greek diet that is restrictive in terms of its philosophy - historically the intake of various foods was regulated only based on availability and price. There are no foods you should limit due to any perception of them being “bad” and you should never feel guilty the moment you are actually having the food. Just work slowly and progressively by building gradual appreciation for healthy foods and prize less nutritious foods as occasional taste bud rewards.
As said above, a good mood is crucial when you sit down to eat. In the history of the Greek society this translated into eating with friends and / or family, maybe with the occasional sip of wine, ideally in a pleasant environment and always taking your time with your food. If some of these are less feasible than others, try alternatively to improve the setting in which you eat, to eat in an environment that calms you down. Schedule your meal so that you won’t eat in anxiety or hurry, if this is possible. Think of pleasant memories and feel grateful for your food. Cheers! Or, you know, εις υγείαν!

This week has been incredibly busy for you. Every day until summer will be spent harvesting your spring crops and preparing for the transition to the new season. After selling a massive haul to a delighted Pierre, you barge into the clinic with determination.
“Is it too late for a coffee?” You ask, handing your thermos out to Harvey.
“Never,” he replies, placing his mug in front of you to pour into. “What would you like in return for this surprise gift?”
“Hey now, I don't always ask for something in return.”
“True, but your coffee offerings always come with a request or an apology. I assumed the former,” he smirks and takes a sip.
“Ok fine, you got me. I have a favour to ask of you, but it's totally okay if you don't feel comfortable doing it.”
“I'm listening,” he raises an eyebrow with intrigue.
“It's Shane’s birthday today, and I want to throw him a mini surprise party. But I know he won't come over willingly, so I was hoping you might give him a call,” you look up at him and gauge his reaction.
“Oh. I know where this is going,” Harvey rubs his temple under the arm of his glasses, “you know it's incredibly unethical for me to fake an injury, right?”
“I know, you can say no. Hear me out though, I just need Shane to think he needs to help feed Kiki tonight. He'll do it, he's soft when it comes to animals. It just has to be for a good enough reason, like I passed out from exhaustion and need an IV or something. You know?” You say hopefully.
Harvey looks at you, pondering his options. It's a bit of a stretch asking him to do this, he's completely justified in refusing your request. He twirls a pen around his fingers and sighs heavily.
“I just know he won't take it seriously from me, but if you ask him-”
“Fine,” Harvey sighs in defeat.
“Really!?” You clench your fists in excitement.
“Yes, for you I'll do it,” he chuckles, “when should I call him?”
“Hmm, around 6 maybe? In case he comes over right after.”
“Sounds good. I'll let you know how it goes.”
“Thank you! You're the best,” you wave and quickly exit the clinic, energized for your birthday mission.

You're just about finished frying the last batch of pepper poppers when Harvey’s call comes in. You quickly answer it and tuck your phone between your cheek and shoulder to keep your hands free.

Harvey chuckles on the other end. “Apparently I'm a more convincing actor than I thought. He was pissed, but he's on his way.”
“He’ll get over it soon. Thanks for doing this Harvey, I really appreciate it.”
“No worries, have fun tonight.”
“See you soon,” you end the call and fish the rest of the snacks from the oil, adding them to a tray in the oven to keep warm. Between these and the pizza you got from Gus, the smell coming from the cabin might give away the surprise.
You quickly tidy up, set the table and scatter some cheap decorations to finish the gift. You turn off the lights and sit quietly on your couch to wait for his arrival.
Shane's footsteps approach a few minutes later, and he tentatively tries the door. You always leave your door unlocked, so he slips in and calls out for Kiki, who comes trotting up to greet him. He gives her a few head scritches before standing to hit the lights.
“Surprise!” You jump up with your biggest smile, earning a jolt and a death glare from Shane.
“That explains the smell. You’re unbelievable, you know that right?”
“Honestly, you should expect this from me at this point,” you laugh, leading him to the kitchen, “Happy Birthday, Shane.”
Shane grumbles, but inspects the table with curiousity. You pull out the pizza and pepper poppers from the oven, and grab a large growler of your homemade pale ale from the fridge.
“There's no one else lurking in the shadows, is there?”
“Nope, just me.”
“Good. I don't have to share.”
“I'm glad you’re hungry, I was hoping to catch you before dinner. Did you have any plans tonight?” You pass him a mug of beer.
“I was just about to throw in a frozen pizza when Harvey called. The game starts soon,” he glances at the clock on your wall.
“We can watch it here if you like?”
“You like Gridball?” He raises an eyebrow.
“Truthfully, I don't know anything about it. But it's your birthday, so whatever you want to do I'm game.”
Shane ponders his options for a moment, staring at the spread of his favourites you prepared for him. “Yea alright.”
“Sweet,” you toss him the TV remote and pile a plate with food while he finds the right channel.
“I can't believe you put Harvey up to lie like that. I didn't think he was capable of it.”
“That man will do anything for a cup of coffee, I swear,” you laugh, “what did he say?”
“He said Marlon found you passed out and carried you to the clinic, and that he was worried about your new kitten. I almost refused, but he said you trust me the most when it comes to animal care,” he rolls his eyes.
“Nice, Harvey. Pulling at the one heartstring you have,” you grin cheekily.
“Yea yea,” he takes a big bite of a pepper popper, visible steam escaping from it. “FUCK that's hot,” he struggles to avoid dropping it.
“Oh yea, I just fried those,” you laugh, “good though, right?”
“So good,” a tear streams down his face, unclear if primarily from pain or pleasure.
The two of you stuff your faces while watching the game, Shane happy to answer your questions about the rules and add quips about the players. It's nice to see him so enthusiastic about something other than chickens.
When halftime rolls around, you tidy up and pack away the leftovers for Shane to take home later. He brings your plates for the dishwasher, and refills both of your beers.
“So..” he looks at you tentatively, and you raise an eyebrow at him. “Aunt Marnie told me Sebastian was here when she dropped Kiki off.”
You tense up for a moment before continuing with your task. “I was wondering if she would. What's the rumour going around about us? It hasn't come back to me yet.”
“There isn't one. I managed to squash it for you, you're welcome.”
“Really? How?”
“She asked if I knew anything about the two of you, and I said yes. She barely knows anything about Sebastian, other than he tends to stay up late in his room. She thought it was weird he was there so early, so I told her he often hangs out with you when he can't sleep and that you’re good friends.”
You flop back onto the couch and turn the volume down while the commercials ramble on. “And she just took your word for it?”
Shane joins you on the couch. “Yea. She's uh, really team Harvey for your romantic interest,” he takes a sip of beer, glancing at you for your reaction.
You lean your head back on the couch with a groan, putting your palm on your forehead. You slide your hand down your face and take a few big sips of beer.
“Those women need to get a hobby. Seriously, why does everyone think we’re going to date? We barely hang out, sure we're friendly with each other but come on, it's not like we're openly flirting,” your frustration is evident in your tone.
“Harvey is kind, and well respected. And so are you. They want him to be happy,” he shrugs.
“I want him to be happy too, but I don't want to be responsible for his happiness,” you furrow your brows, taking another angry sip.
“Touchy subject, eh?” Shane smirks, and you glare at him briefly. “Why are you so mad about it?”
You stare into your mug and sigh, unsure how to answer.
“...Maybe you and Sebastian are more serious than you think after all?” He says tentatively.
You sigh, and meet his eyes. “I don’t want to be responsible for Seb’s happiness either.”
“What about your own happiness?”
This is easily the deepest conversation you've had with Shane. It's a nice change of pace, being able to talk openly with someone who knows about you and Sebastian. You reflect for a moment before answering him. “I want to be happy on my own first. What about you?”
“Yea, me too. I got a lot of issues to sort out still,” he stares into his beer.
“Can I be honest with you?” You turn slightly to face him.
“When are you not?”
You grin briefly before returning to a serious expression. “I…I feel conflicted. About giving you alcohol. Ever since that day…” you trail off, memories of his limp body by the cliff flashing in your mind.
Shane fidgets slightly, avoiding your eyes. “I'm feeling better, truly. I don't rely on it as much any more. It's still a problem, no doubt about it. But I feel…much more in control, now. It's not an everyday thing that consumes my every thought.”
“That's good to hear,” you place a hand on his knee for comfort. “Let me know how I can support you. If you decide to quit for example, I'll remove any sign of it from your sight.”
“Thanks. Counselling has helped a lot. And so has the time with your chickens,” he smiles softly. “Now shut up, the games back on,” he grabs the remote and cranks the volume. You smirk at the abrupt end of your heart-to-heart, straightening up and resting your feet on the coffee table to enjoy the game.
The game ends later than you anticipated, Shane’s team squeaking out an overtime win as another little birthday present for him. You grab the leftover pizza from the fridge and hand it to him as he gets ready to go.
“Thanks for everything, Farmer. This was…really nice,” he smiles warmly at you.
“Awe, you’re welcome,” you lean in to give him a big hug, but your attempt is thwarted by a hand on your forehead.
“No. No, none of that,” he stands firm, resisting your attempts to lean forward and break his strength.
“Let me…hug you…dammit!” You grunt as you lean further into his palm.
“Fucking hell, why are you so freakishly strong?” He sighs, removing his hand. You flop into his chest suddenly, and he grunts as he catches you for a one-armed embrace.
“Oof!” You’re startled for a moment, but quickly squeeze him tight. Shane pats your back a few times, sighing dramatically.
“You’re a good hugger.”
“Don't get used to it. Now let me go, would ya?” Shane feigns annoyance, but his smile remains when you break away from him.
“See you in the morning,” you wave him off as he walks home, pleased with yourself for how well the evening went. It'll be hard to top that gift next year, you chuckle to yourself.

Five years after the Brazil oil spill, fishing workers deal with losses and hopelessness
The state's failure to take measures, climate change and real estate speculation are exacerbating the situation

Five years on from the oil spill that devastated 11 of Brazil's coastal states, especially parts of the northeastern area of the country, the consequences of the disaster continue to affect fisherpeople, shellfish gatherers and other workers who depend on coastal fauna. The impacts can be seen in the income and hearts of coastal populations. That is what artisanal fisherman Erivan Bezerra de Medeiros, who has spent almost 50 years fishing and five years frustrated by Brazil’s lack of measures, says.
“This is the fifth year we've come here to Brasilia to demand our rights [in the face of] this absurd crime that happened in the country – one of the worst in Latin America so far. There has still been no reparation, either for the fisherpeople who were affected or for the riverside communities, traditional communities, Indigenous peoples and quilombolas,” laments the fisherman, who lives in a community on the southern coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte where around 200 workers were left out of the aid announced by the then Bolsonaro government. Medeiros says it is no longer possible to measure the personal and professional damage caused by oil.
The fisherman's statement tallies with the figures: at the time of the oil spill, the Bolsonaro administration promised financial aid for 300,000 coastal workers, but the benefit only covered an average of 60,000 to 80,000 people, according to the Fishing Workers's Pastoral Council (CPP, in Portuguese). In northeastern Brazil, from the state of Bahia to Maranhão, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture counts 460,000 fisherpeople. Formally, the category of artisanal fisherpeople includes shellfish gatherers, rafters, riverside dwellers, quilombola fisherpeople, Indigenous people and other workers.
The spill, which began on August 30, 2019, and lasted until March 2020, affected all nine states of northeastern Brazil and also extended to the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. More than 3,000 square kilometers were affected, according to projections by the federal executive branch's environmental technical staff. Today, Erivan Medeiros is involved in the “Sea of Struggle” campaign, which seeks compensation for the population affected by the spill. He says the lack of justice in the case has caused a series of problems for the sector. “Many people have fallen ill because of oil. Some are getting blind, others have committed suicide because they haven't been compensated, and so on. This is our fight,” he says.

As a fish keeper i have so many questions, first. HOW THE HELL DO YOU USE MINERAL WATER IN YOUR FISH TANK. How are their fish not all dead what the hell. that’s fucking crazy. I keep fish and i had a heart attack when i saw that fucking test strip
as someone who works at a pet store, understand the average customer is dumb as hell who have no clue how to look things up and research for themselves before they come in. The only thing I can do is try my best to give them a crash course, make suggestions what to buy, and refuse to sell to anyone I don’t feel comfortable with.
Fish, especially fucking anything related to aquatic life, is met with this casual, sickening level of indifference and ignorance. So many people think you can just put one in regular ass tap water, or worse, fucking mineral water Ike in that post, and it’ll all be honky dory. I’ve blown so many minds when I say you’re basically starting your own ecosystem and I run the gamut of setting things up so they’re under no illusions what they’re getting into. I don’t get a commission off the shit the store sells so I have no personal benefit to sell anything. I take customer service seriously cause I don’t want people coming back complaining that I didn’t tell them this or that. Fish, especially because they’re probably the hardest type of pet to take care of, is where I spend a lot of information. If someone walks away from a conversation with me realizing it’s too much work to keep aquatic life, I did my job. Corporate should pay me more if they want me to sell snake oil.

Hey babes we have 3 months before the summer! It is time to tighten up! This is the time to work on your physical and mental I know we all want to be hot girls this summer so now is the time to prioritize ourselves!
Routines
♡ Routines are super important. they are your key to success and living an organized life. If you have not created a routine already I created a blog post on how to create a productive routine. This is the time to stick to your routines in the morning and night and adjust them if needed. 
Physical 
♡ Hygiene. Consistency is key for your facial care routine to work so be consistent in applying all your products. If you aren't seeing results with a certain product you have been using for over 3 months maybe try and find a better product. I recommend using a gua sha three times a week there are so many benefits in using a gua sha blog post coming soon! Don’t just focus on your facial care focus also on your body care use African exfoliating net sponges, shave regularly, apply lotions and body oils, and use feet masks to peel dead skin.
♡ Diet. For my girlies who are on a weight loss journey and want to be snatched before summer, it is time to be dedicated to sticking to your diet. I don’t have any specific diets to recommend do what works for you. If you struggle with Binge Eating Disorder like me I have a book that I can recommend that will help you work on your ED and also help you lose weight “The Binge Code” by Allison Kerr and Richard Kerr. This book has been a game-changer for me!  For my babes who aren't focused on weight loss, it is still important to try and eat healthier try including a variety of whole foods into your diet and drink waterrr!!! Water is so good for us from our skin to our digestive system try and drink at least 50oz but aim for 100oz of water daily.
♡ Movement. Try and include some sort of movement daily we must move our bodies daily. Figure out what type of exercise you like walking is very simple and costs absolutely nothing. Start small with 10 minutes of outdoor walking daily. Natural light is so beneficial for our mental health and mood. Yoga and pilates are such amazing slow and impactful forms of exercise. I've been including yoga in my nighttime routine there are so many channels and videos on YouTube you can follow. There are so many other forms of exercise you can try some free and some that cost money.
♡ Supplements. Help and maintain our overall health they can also help with our daily requirements of essential nutrients. I will be listing a few supplements below <333
Multivitamin. Find a reputable multivitamin and take it daily or as instructed. Multivitamins can boost energy and give you vitamins and minerals you might be deficient in.
Magnesium. Improves mood, sleep, exercise performance, regulates blood sugar, and so much more. Magnesium is overlooked by many but so beneficial for us. I've been seeing the bedtime magnesium mocktail I have yet to try but I plan to.
Omega 3(fish oil). Helps with typical brain and eye development. It can fight inflammation and help prevent heart disease and the decline of brain function.
Vitamin D. A lot of us during the winter time have a deficiency in vitamin D because the sun is not out a lot so vitamin D supplements are a must-have they help with regulating mood, reducing depression, healthy bones, and so many other amazing benefits.
Vitamin B Complex. Helps boost energy levels, brain function, digestion, and cell health. There are so many other benefits.
Probiotics. Helps improve gut health, puts healthy bacteria into our gut that in turn helps our digestive system, and inflammation, and can even help aide your weightless journey. 
Mental 
♡ Sleep. Our bodies function so much better when we are getting a good amount of sleep. You think clearly and your mood is better. Try and set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it. I had to sleep train myself at the beginning of the semester it was so harddd but I'm reaping the benefits now I have energy during the day, my mood is better in the morning, and my brain functions better during the day.
♡ Journaling. We have a lot of emotions that we carry throughout the day and it is important that we let them out and journaling is the best way to do so. I have three journals. One journal is for my emotions, another for gratitude journaling which I highly recommend you get into, and finally my last journal for shadow work. You do not need to have three journals but I like to have everything separate it helps me. 
♡ Book. I love reading and listening to self-help books. We all have issues that we need to fix and thankfully we have so many self-help books dedicated to so many different issues people face on a daily. I have so many recommendations I’ll list below.

I recommend that you use better help. For my NYC teenagers between the ages of 13-17, there is a website called talk space that offers free online therapy for NYC teens NO REFERRAL IS NEEDED. If I find more websites that offer free therapy for other teens around the world I will let you all know<3.

Lord Byron responds to criticism of his poem Don Juan:
“The air of this cursed Italy enervates—and disenfranchises the thoughts of a man after nearly four years of respiration—to say nothing of emission. As to ‘Don Juan’—confess—confess you dog and be candid that it is the sublime of that there sort of writing—it may be bawdy—but is it not good English? It may be profligate—but is it not life, is it not the thing? Could any man have written it—who has not lived in the world?—and fooled in a post-chaise? in a hackney coach? in a gondola? against a wall? in a court carriage? in a vis a vis? on a table?—and under it? I have written about a hundred stanzas of a third Canto—but it is a damned modest—the outcry has frightened me. I have such projects for the Don—but the Cant is so much stronger than the Cunt now a days, that the benefit of experience in a man who had well weighed the worth of both monosyllables must be lost to despairing posterity.” (Letter to Douglas Kinnaird, Venice, 26 October, 1819.)
Francis Cohen remarked: “Lord B. should have been grave & gay by turns; grave in one page & gay in the next; grave in one line, & gay in the next. And not grave & gay in the same page, or in the same stanza, or in the same line… we are never drenched & scorched at the same instant whilst standing in one spot.” (Letter to John Murray, 16 July, 1819).
Byron replied to the critique:
“I will answer [Cohen] who objects to the quick succession of fun and gravity—as if in that case the gravity did not (in intention at least) heighten the fun. His metaphor is that ‘we are never scorched and drenched at the same time!' Blessings on his experience! Ask him these questions about 'scorching and drenching’. Did he never play at Cricket or walk a mile in hot weather? Did he never spill a dish of tea over his testicles in handing the cup to his charmer to the great shame of his nankeen breeches? Did he never swim in the sea at Noonday with the Sun in his eyes and on his head--which all the foam of ocean could not cool? When you think of Eastern European Jewish cuisine, which words come to mind? Light? Healthy? Plant based? Probably not. Heavy, homey and meat-centric are more like it. 
Fania Lewando died during the Holocaust, but had she been given the full length of her years, Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine may have taken a turn to the vegetarian side and we might all be eating vegetarian kishke and spinach cutlets in place of brisket.
Lewando is not a household name. In fact, she would have been lost to history had it not been for an unlikely turn of events. Thanks to a serendipitous find, her 1937 work, “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook” (“Vegetarish-Dietisher Kokhbukh”in Yiddish), was saved from oblivion and introduced to the 21st century.
Vilna in the 1930s, where Lewando and her husband Lazar made their home, was a cosmopolitan city with a large Jewish population. Today, it is the capital of Lithuania but it was then part of Poland. Lewando opened a vegetarian eatery called The Vegetarian Dietetic Restaurant on the edge of the city’s Jewish quarter. It was a popular spot among both Jews and non-Jews, as well as luminaries of the Yiddish-speaking world. (Even renowned artist Marc Chagall signed the restaurant’s guest book.)
Lewando was a staunch believer in the health benefits of vegetarianism and devoted her professional life to promoting these beliefs. She wrote: “It has long been established by the highest medical authorities that food made from fruit and vegetables is far healthier and more suitable for the human organism than food made from meat.” Plus, she wrote, vegetarianism satisfies the Jewish precept of not killing living creatures. 
We know little about her life other than she was born Fania Fiszlewicz in the late 1880s to a Jewish family in northern Poland. She married Lazar Lewando, an egg merchant from what is today Belarus and they eventually made their way to Vilna. They did not have children. 
Lewando, to quote Jeffrey Yoskowitz, author of “The Gefilte Manifesto” was “a woman who challenged convention;” a successful entrepreneur, which was a rarity among women of the time. She supervised a kosher vegetarian kitchen on an ocean liner that traveled between Poland and the United States, and gave classes on nutrition to Jewish women in her culinary school. 
“The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook” was sold in Europe and the U.S. in Lewando’s day, but most of the copies were lost or destroyed during the Second World War. In 1995, a couple found a copy of the cookbook at a second-hand book fair in England. They understood the importance of a pre-war, Yiddish-language, vegetarian cookbook written by a woman, so purchased it and sent it to the YIVO Institute’s offices in New York. There, it joined the millions of books, periodicals and photos in YIVO’s archives. 
It was discovered again by two women who visited YIVO and were captivated by the book’s contents and colorful artwork. They had it translated from Yiddish to English so it could be enjoyed by a wider audience.
Like many Ashkenazi cooks, salt was Lewando’s spice, butter her flavor and dill her herb. The book is filled with dishes you’d expect: kugels and blintzes and latkes; borscht and many ways to use cabbage. There’s imitation gefilte fish and kishke made from vegetables, breadcrumbs, eggs and butter. Her cholent (a slow-cooked Sabbath stew) recipes are meat-free, including one made with prune, apple, potatoes and butter that is a cross between a stew and a tzimmes.
There are also some surprises.
Did you know it was possible to access tomatoes, eggplants, asparagus, lemons, cranberries, olive oil, Jerusalem artichokes, blueberries and candied orange peel in pre-war Vilna? There’s a French influence, too, such as recipes for mayonnaise Provencal and iles flottante, a meringue-based dessert, and a salad of marinated cornichons with marinated mushrooms. 
“It’s hard to know who the target audience was for this cookbook,” said Eve Jochnowitz, its English-language translator. “We know from contemporary memoirs that people in Vilna did not have access to these amazing amounts of butter, cream and eggs,” she said. “Lewando was writing from a somewhat privileged and bourgeois position.” While many of these recipes may have been aspirational given the poverty of the Jews at the time, the cookbook demonstrates that it was possible to obtain these ingredients in Vilna, should one have the resources to do so. 
While the cookbook is filled with expensive ingredients, there is also, said Jochnowitz, “a great attention to husbanding one’s resources. She was ahead of her time in the zero-waste movement.” Lewando admonishes her readers to waste nothing. Use the cooking water in which you cooked your vegetables for soup stock. Use the vegetables from the soup stock in other dishes. “Throw nothing out,” she writes in the cookbook’s opening essay. “Everything can be made into food.” Including the liquid from fresh vegetables; Lewando instructed her readers on the art of vitamin drinks and juices, with recipes for Vitamin-Rich Beet Juice and Vitamin-Rich Carrot Juice. “This was very heroic of her,” said Jochnowitz. “There were no juice machines! You make the juice by grating the vegetables and then squeezing the juice out by hand.”
Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, a Jewish scholar and Jewish cookbook collector, describes Lewando as “witty.” “She is showing us,” she said, “that once you eliminate meat and fish, you still have an enormous range of foods you can prepare.” Lewando is about “being creative, imaginative and innovative both with traditional dishes and with what she is introducing that is remote from the traditional repertoire.” She does that in unexpected ways. Her milchig (dairy) matzah balls, for example, have an elegance and lightness to them. She instructs the reader to make a meringue with egg whites, fold in the yolks, then combine with matzah meal, melted butter and hot water. Her sauerkraut salad includes porcini mushrooms. One of her kugels combines cauliflower, apples, sliced almonds and candied orange peel.
There is much that, through contemporary eyes, is missing in “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook.” The recipes do not give step-by-step instructions; rather you will find general directions. Heating instructions are vague, ranging from a “not-too-hot-oven” to a “warm oven” to a “hot oven.” Lewando assumes the reader’s familiarity with the kitchen that today’s cookbook writer would not. 
Lewando and her husband were listed in the 1941 census of the Vilna Ghetto but not in the census of 1942. It is believed that they both died or were killed while attempting to escape. “She really was a visionary,” said Jochnowitz. “It is an unbearable tragedy that she did not live to see the future that she predicted and helped to bring about.”But in cooking her recipes, said Yoskowitz, as dated and incomplete as some of them may be, the conversation between then and now continues.

I believe that beauty and health go hand in hand so I got a complete blood work-up to figure out what vitamins and minerals my body was lacking, and I make sure I'm taking my them daily. On top of that, I take various supplements such as Collagen, Fish oil etc but I swear by my 10-gram daily collagen regimen. I take its powdered form right before going to bed and have noticed its benefits within a short time - My knees used to sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies when I bent down, but after a few days of collagen, the crepitus is gone. Plus, my hair is growing faster and my skin is looking plumper. It's done wonders for my joints, giving me a healthy glow, and making me look way more refreshed.

You know what's a major beauty tip that most people sleep on? Sleep!! Forget about slapping on expensive creams and doing a gazillion steps in your skincare routine. You gotta start with the basics, hun. Get your sleep game on point, eat right, and manage your stress. Now, I know we all have different needs when it comes to sleep, so I won't give you a specific number. But trust me, beauty sleep is not a myth, it's legit! I turn on Night Mode on my devices at 6:30, pop my sleeping pills at 9:30, and hit the hay an hour later. Oh, and I'm not afraid to take a nap during the day if I need to. Don't underestimate the power of a good night's sleep. It's the secret to looking and feeling amazing.
Growing out my eyelashes!

I take pride in my long and voluminous lashes, they're one of my best features and one of my most complimented features. However, my natural lashes were not always this way, they became longer through regular lash serum usage. I do not really need wear mascara and after a lash lift, my lashes appear as if I'm wearing extensions. While Latisse has worked wonders for me, it's important to note that the product does come with potential side effects such as orbital fat loss and irritation. Thankfully, I did not experience any adverse effects. Another caveat is that the product only works as long as it is used consistently. THE BEAR S3 Predictions
Just a mental note I'm putting out here to be able to revisit it when the time comes to check its level of accuracy. I have the feeling that S3 is going to be the season of the reconciliations.
The relationship between Richie and Carmy is completely broken after the walk-in incident and Richie walks from The Bear. He happens to get some kinda job offer and accepts it just to prove Carmy wrong. They will later spend a good portion of S3 trying to repair their bond. By the end of S3 (hopefully sooner) there should be a reconciliation of some sort between them and Richie should go back to The Bear.
Nat gives birth to her new "cub" and this brings the family together. There is a reconciliation with Donna, which in some capacity benefits not only the siblings but the entire team, the restaurant as a whole. Not exactly sure how this will play out, but Donna will quit being this negative and toxic influence on everyone. Maybe she gets clean because she takes this baby as a new chance to start over and be a better grandmother than the mother she was. IDK...
Marcus' mother dies and this juxtaposition of new beginnings, births, endings, death, etc is going to be a theme throughout the whole season, that is why I actually think this funeral will be the opener.
There will be some kinda flashback episode, like 7 Fishes or a montage of some memory that has a huge impact on one or more characters. I have my $ put on the Sundays, Mr. Adamu and lil Syd would spend at Mr. Beef's. I strongly disagree with the weak argument that just because the Berzattos are catholic, their restaurant didn't open on Sundays. The gastronomic industry cares very little about those traditions especially if the place is struggling. I bet they were open every Sunday part-time, just for lunch, to get all the demand of those who went to church just because business-wise it makes total sense.
Carmen will apologize to Claire. Not sure what she's gonna make of that apology, whether she's gonna accept it or not, I hope she doesn't. I'm pretty sure there will be no reconciliation here. I don't necessarily oppose Carmy having a romantic partner and as much as I ship SydCarmy like nobody's business, I'm 100% sure they are not gonna happen any time soon. Maybe and this is a HUGE maybe, they could be the perfect cliffhanger for S4. But that would be a stretch. Not that Store & Calo couldn't pull it off, but still. So, basically, I am all for a new love interest being presented to Carmen just to see how he responds to it. After Claire he should go back to his old lone-wolf ways, I need to test that behavioral theory though, so I need a new female character to do it.
Last, but certainly not least, Miss Adamu needs her man and I'm not talking about Bear. I want to know more about Sydney's past and see her letting her hair down, putting her records on, and all that jazz. So, maybe an old flame can re-appear in her life and they can try to "reconcile". This reconciliation shouldn't work either because she's now devoted to making The Bear work and is basically a workaholic and both, Carmy & her get into this synch of type As on Speed and Red Bull, non-stop working machines, well-oiled now that they had already learned from their mistakes and The Bear succeeds but Sydney's relationship with her guy from the past fails, again. The guy feels like a 3rd wheel and lets her know that she's not in a relationship with him but with her job. Sydney understands the subtext, and this break-up is actually a wake-up call for her. She starts seeing what we all shippers are already seeing. It's not just about work for her. Yes, The Bears are too absorbing and demanding, both, the restaurant and the chef, but she doesn't mind. She loves it. Love is the operative word here. This realization should hit her hard by the end of the season.
The background of all the things I just mentioned above will be the BOH, fast-paced, chaotic, and working like a Swiss clock, just like Carmy likes it.
Am I missing something? Probably. Can't wait to find out.
Bonus tracks: I am pretty sure the wedding will either be Teff's or Fak's.
And lastly: When Sydcarmy happens, it will "officially" start with something small and inane like Syd accidentally finding out Carm has been drawing portraits of her all along... CHECK THIS OUT, I think Storer & Calo have something like this in mind or along these lines, and it should come along in S3, minus the sex part.
