I’ve been thinking a lot about Watcher!Joel lately. I didn’t watch evo so my knowledge is limited to what my friends tell me about it and things I’ve absorbed through osmosis, but in the context of Joel’s Empires season I feel like there’s a lot there for Watcher!Joel (again only from what I’ve gleaned I could be very wrong). I know his finale was largely a joke and Joel being stupid but WHY does he have the most compelling story (I hate him he’s my no.1 enemy). First of all, just the premise of him being the last of his kind, the only god left and making monuments/shrines to remember them is sooo…Then we take his finale where the on of the “lore gods” (watchers) come down and tell Joel how they’ve been watching him the entire time and testing him for his worthiness and deciding he is in fact worthy to ascend and join the overseers of lore (WATCHERS!!!). I just think it would be an interesting thing to explore especially since Joel is so unserious when it comes to lore. Like that could be translated as a loss in disbelief in the higher gods (maybe Joel’s a demigod) and he’s refusing to worship them/participate in the religion. But suddenly he feels called to work on making sure the other demigods, his friends, aren’t forgotten, and losing his friends could be some sick way of the watchers pushing Joel to make some changes and decisions so that he can be molded into the perfect watcher. I’m having thoughts. I’m having many thoughts....

Day 31

So……. It turns out that when I have four hours of free time I go buck wild and spend it on this animation I’m really proud of!

absolutely in shock and awe at how all three of the bad boys' curses went off and remained unbroken in one episode. jimmy's canary curse, grian's 'kills the person he cares most about' curse (as he was the person to suggest that jimmy should push off the tnt minecart; also killed jimmy like three times), and joel's end-game madness curse. like we were all so hopeful for some reason that THIS would be the season where it all ends but no. business as usual. jimmy's dead, grian's sad, and joel is mad. and also dead.

saw a post interpreting this episode as the watchers forcibly dragging grian's soul back to where it belongs and while i love that angst potential there is also immense comedy to be found here. imagine you're joel/jimmy and out of nowhere, your third teammate sighs really loudly and goes "hang on. gods are trying to take me back" and then just goes catatonic. what the fuck do you even do

I like the concept of life series curses being something self inflicted rather than some divine curse of the universe. As in its something that can be worked through if they just learned how, if they just spotted the pattern and moved to correct it. Not that it’s as mundane as Going to Therapy, but it’s magic that reflects a truth about themselves

The Canary Curse is a reflection of Jimmy’s foolhardy determination. The Widow’s curse reflects how Grian holds tactic above connection. 777, the angel number for luck, reflects how Skizz’s friendship is a boon for others at the expense of himself.

If Jimmy just considered how he is doomed, he might take more cautious steps. If Grian just opened up more he could act to protect people instead of damning them. If Skizz recognized that his nature is what ends him, he could protect himself at the cost of others, lasting beyond session 7.

But Jimmy won’t, Grian won’t, and neither will Skizz. And so they are cursed
