(Passion •2) The sunlight was touching him lightly. He opened an eye. Slowly, he looked at his wound. He could see it shimmering but the blood had stopped leaking. He had no idea how much time passed since he passed out. He could still feel the pain but was more numb than suffering. He tried to stand up, howled in pai, his back legs were shaking. He knew he wouldn��t go far not fast. It’s fine, he said in his mind. He looked around at his lair, grinding a little, and went out, stopping a few meters, laying down again and bathing in the sun. (Passion •1) Wounded, dripping blood, the lone wolf has returned to his lair. In the darkness, he walks in circles, ignoring the pain inflicted at every step. He feels the fire in his soul more than the suffering. The fire that he is so proud of has helped him through life. Somehow age has caught up with him. The fire is still here but he doesn’t seem to be able to live up to it. He has used it for too long without enjoying it as much as he should have. He finally stops circling, and just lay down calmly at the entrance, hidden from sight. He hears the silence. He focuses now on the searing pain. The fire slowly dies as life is escaping. The old wolf closes his eyes, senses some fresh air slightly caressing his hair, hears howling in the distance. walkingincircles was/is a flash game made by web designer Jordan Stone in 2002. A unique take on the “room escape” genre of flash game, the player assumes the role of a “walkie”, a visitor to the walkingincircles cyberspace environment searching for a password which allows access to the site proper. During this task they meet an alien amputee, a mysterious drunk, and three employees of the company which runs the site. The game differed from others in the escape genre in that it was hosted on a unique domain and not on a flash game site.

I remember in 4th or 5th grade being completely fascinated with walkingincircles. The background sounds and sky color would change as the game cycled through night and day while you played. The flickering light effect of the shadows brought a strange dimension to the virtual world. It was possible to communicate with others playing the game through a chat feature on the player’s PDA. I also remember being really interested by the heavy “y2k” aesthetic of the in-game employee quarterly magazine.

The fact that the game was on its own site, coupled with how the characters would frequently reference that the “actual” site was behind the password check made me intensely curious about what waited beyond the game. I know now, of course, that there wasn't anything “else”. After discovering the password, you're taken to a hot tub where the employees from earlier are waiting for you, and that's it. But 10 year old me didn't know that, and the mystery of the game kept me in wonder. 

Reportedly, Stone had the in-game password periodically changed in order to thwart players from simply looking up the answer in walkthroughs. The game's domain expired in 2013 and an edited version was uploaded to Newgrounds by Stone in 2014. The game’s original version still exists via the internet archives’ wayback machine, however it is unwinnable (as far as I have found) because it will freeze at a number of key interactions.
