He shrugged a little, shaking his head as he came to the next statement. "Ah, well you see I'm a bit of an edge case. Seein' as Priests specifically exist to hunt and exterminate vampires; they cant really become them, no." He grinned, showing off his fangs once more. "Didn't start out like this, you know. Used to be human; well as human as a Priest ever is. Became this after a hunting accident. Lost the faith, gained a strength I wasn't meant to have."

He chuckled softly, bitterly. "Bein one of a kind really fuckin' bites after a while." So far as he knew, he was the only Vampire of his kind.

It was not easy to scare the witch and even then, her defense mechanism almost always would roll back to humor and sarcasm. And that man, or whatever exactly he was, didnt scare her at all so far besides the first time she laid eyes on him unexpectedly. His face of confusion was clear, hearing how many years he was isolated made things fall a little more into perspective, he was obviously lost in a strange new place but that was not what stuck in Minni's mind, t'was the sence 'When I had them hide me.' Who were them? Why hide him? A lot of questions came to mind for a few moments until his mouth were to open again.

Asked in disbelief, that was the thing that most got to Minerva, not the hunter part or the marking, but the idea of him being a priest priest.

—Wait, can a vampire be a priest?

It is no secret to anyone who knows him that Alastair Carstairs is an exceptional cook. Armed with the knowledge passed down from his mother and Risa, he felt it was his duty to keep the Persian traditions alive in their family, and the only way he felt comfortable doing it was through cooking. Cordelia was the taste tester every time, no matter how burnt or salty or under seasoned his food was. My tongue is burning.’       ‘Oh, this is better than last time! Just needs more chilli, it’s a bit on the mild side.’       ‘Alastair, this is extremely chewy. It’s meant to be softer, no?’       Though he would roll his eyes and pretend to be offended by every one of his sister’s comments, Alastair was glad for it all. It was their little pocket of solidarity in an otherwise distant relationship. Alastair’s own doing, of course, but he felt it necessary at the time.       He was four years old when he first showed an interest, according to Sona. By eleven, Alastair was comfortable enough to cook a couple of simple dishes without any help. By fifteen, he was a self-proclaimed master. Yes, he made mistakes sometimes—as all good cooks do—but he knew his way around a kitchen, just as Cordelia knew her way around Cortana. Naturally it was something he kept to himself: if he had disclosed to any of the boys who bullied him at the Shadowhunter Academy that he, a male, loved and knew how to cook, and was taught how to by the women in his life, it would have given them yet another few reasons to belittle and assault him.       Being his father’s son and a boy with darker skin was already too many reasons. So Alastair kept his passion quiet, known only to his mother, his sister, and Risa. He’s sure Elias never knew, for if he had, Alastair is certain he would have put a stop to it somehow. All it took was one remark to have Alastair give up and push it down. His love for piano and singing, for instance.       But Alastair and Cordelia made it a regular occurrence to take over the kitchen and get under Risa’s feet, in her words. He cherishes those memories, where flour would coat the front of his waistcoat and parts of Cordelia’s hair, and the fragrant aroma of cinnamon, cardamom and clove would fill the entire room alongside their laughter. They were just some of the good things he held onto whilst at the Academy.       But the Academy days are no more, and Elias’s domineering presence has fizzled out through fire and ash. Alastair is free to do whatever he wants to do and be whoever he wants to be, and cooking is only a part of it.

the clave: surely if we teach our young nephilim that emotions are weaknesses/distractions/something to be repressed, they’ll stop having emotions and just be good soldiers, right? what could go wrong?

and they were SO wrong. because what happens when you train a group of people subject to emotion (bc they definitely definitely are! even if you think angels might not be, humans are, and shadowhunters are still half-human) is not that they STOP having emotions. it’s that they never learn to express them in meaningful and healthy ways which can be both detrimental to them and the people around them! (it is fundamentally what the clave wants still, though. people who can’t put what they’re feeling into words are going to have a way harder time questioning authority.)

it’s so interesting to see with alec! he’s not always a super verbal person anyway (#autistic alec ftw) and i think he’s a fairly internal processer. BUT in this scene in 3.04 with magnus, it seems very clear that he’s upset, knows he’s upset, and isn’t really trying to hide it from magnus. but the way he stutters around the words and grasps at them and cuts himself off, he’s not just trying to express how he feels, he’s trying to sort out WHAT he feels in real time.

it’s an interesting parallel to because from what i remember of 3.05 in their fight near the end of the episode, i think he comes off less unsure because he makes broader, more assured statements - he seems more articulated, i guess. maybe because he’s been brewing about it all day. but the conversation goes a lot of places because he struggles to understand, yet alone convey, what he’s actually upset about. and magnus in turn (and i think for fully understandable reasons) does not really get that this issue isn’t as simple or one-dimensional as jealousy, or even as familiar as the immortal-vs.-mortal conundrum. it’s about alec not having ever felt like a first-choice to anyone (which is a bit ridiculous and disasterish because i don’t think he quite grasps how much his siblings adore him, but there are reasons for that) and having finally felt secure and wanted with magnus and now starting to have that—shifted. compromised when the move-in question comes up because now he’s thinking about what exactly he even means to magnus. and he knows that it’s not magnus’s fault that he’ll one day ‘move on’ (a loaded term but i digress) when alec dies. and on a fundamental level, i don’t think alec wants him to Not do that! he wants magnus to be happy, to have a good life after him, to have had a good life before him! it’s just that all that can be true and it can still hurt to feel insignificant (which for the record, alec would be MORTIFIED to ever admit, which i think is why this emotional revelation is particularly hard to articulate) (magnus, for his part, knows that all love is different and would be shocked to hear that alec doesn’t understand remarkable and precious he is to magnus).
