This is my Uhura month fic which is about Kirk and Uhura going through it™ on an away mission gone wrong, because the ambassador who did their first contact didn't do his job properly and put them all in danger. Dealing with ableism/medical negligence & feat. one very angry McCoy

Following a translator malfunction I wanted the aliens to speak in O-S-V in it, similar to Yoda, but I can't tell if it sounds too jarring/suits the vibes of the fic. Given that one antagonist is a bumbling idiot I'm wondering if I should make the aliens more “threatening”, though “fear/disregard of the other results in unintended suffering” is a pretty decent TOS plotline in itself, so I may keep it.

Bones ignores him, and runs the tricorder over him with an ever-deepening scowl. He shuts it off with a whirr. “Damned medievalists!” Bones mutters. “What?!” “Those so-called ‘doctors’ on starbase nine!” “What are you talking about?” “Just because they couldn't do their job, they-” “– Bones, will you stop yelling at my bio-readings and tell me what's going on?” “Alright. You have endometriosis.” He stops pacing. “Do you know what that is?” Jim furrows his brow. It sounds no more familiar than any of the other diagnoses he received around the time of Tarsus IV. He shrugs. “I've heard of it.” “And you never suspected you might have it?” He hesitates. “I started birth control pretty young. I’ve never really had to deal with this before.” “Well, that might explain why the doctor who prescribed your first batch of birth control didn't realise you had it. It's nowhere to be found in your medical notes…” he grumbles something to himself. “It’s not even in your redacted medical notes.”

The idea that if you don't write gen fics/make gen art where a woman character of color is in a vacuum away from her (male) love interest you are somehow not REALLY appreciating her is reductive, gatekeeping, and absurd.

They don't receive the same fan attention white women do, romantic and otherwise. You cannot apply the same expectations and metrics because misogynoir has its own facets to consider.

Fans don't have to 'prove they care about her' by writing her in a context free of her partner. That's just an attempt to shut down those fans, and when the character is a WoC then they already struggle enough getting fandom to care about them.

You're not fooling anyone with that fake feminist garbage. If you don't want to see a woman of color in a romantic pairing then whatever, but stop saying people who predominantly write about them in that fashion don't 'actually care about her'.

If you're not providing that content either, then neither do you.
