i made the post complaining about uhura in aos that you said was racist. I’m deleting it now because it was honestly stressing me out but I genuinely do not understand what I said that was racist, and if you feel like explaining then please do. I love Uhura in the original series, and the post was essentially something I was thinking about in the moment I made it, not a comprehensive detailing of every reason I disliked it. I just hoped the reboot movies would have explored her character more, and I was disappointed when the first two diminished her role in the story (in my opinion). I have nothing but respect for Nichelle Nichols and again if you want to explain I am more than willing to listen.
(but also I don’t appreciate being blamed for the political state of my country over a post about star trek. I am a trans minor and several years from being able to vote, and I was terrified when trump won.)
sure demand a disabled woc do your work for you instead of lord forbid doing your own research start here:
also as to the being blamed for the political state of the country its my country too but I'm out here educating myself about my lightskinned privilege. have been for years.
you sound like the same idiots on booktok that are annoyed that people canceled them for voting for Trump. just because you're trans doesn't mean you can't be racist.

New Star Trek headcanon: Chekov thinks McCoy is from Georgia (country) and not Georgia (USA) and keeps calling him "neighbor" because Russia's next to Georgia. McCoy is very confused.

I do think it would be very funny if, instead of sonic showers, vulcans cleaned themselves via sandblasting. every starship shower has two modes: "water" and "get pelted with rocks," and woe betide poor ensign who doesn't notice that someone changed the settings in their shared bathroom.

Today I continued my Star Trek journey by rewatching Star Trek (2009) and boy howdy do I have some thoughts.
Tumblr media
So first off, I saw this for the first time when I came out in 2009. It wasn’t my first experience with Star Trek, but it was probably my first with Kirk and Spock and that gang. I remember liking it a lot.
Now that I’ve watched all of TOS and a few of the movies with the original cast my feelings are a little more complicated.
Overall, fun movie! I imagine they had to have felt the weight of recasting and redoing such iconic characters, and in a lot of ways they succeeded. It certainly got younger people like me interested in the franchise!
💫 Spock: I do love this version of him. His “live long and prosper” to the VSA is perfectly bitchy and I’m obsessed with it.
Tumblr media
💫BONES!! if you’ve read any of my other posts you’ll know that somehow Bones snuck up on me as my favorite character. I love his intro here, and I think Karl Urban gets the tone just right. This really is a buffet for the McKirkers out there, I can see how this led to 1000 academy era fics of them.
Tumblr media
💫Kirk: oh Jim. Jimmy Jim Jim. Baby boy. What are you doing. How did being played by Chris Pine (who is incredibly hot) make you LESS attractive??
Obviously this Kirk suffers from some Kirk drift and the added trauma of losing his dad. He’s so much angrier, so much less sweet and nerdy. Rewatching this now I can see why I was so hesitant to like him in TOS because he’s a lot less lovable here.
Tumblr media
💫 I get it’s an emergency and they had to for plot reasons, but almost all of Pike’s staffing choices make no sense. Sure, Spock as acting captain, I get that. But everyone else?? Imagine being one of the other people there who has been with starfleet for years and seeing him hand Kirk the role of first officer. The ship can’t be entirely cadets can it?? Imagine the group texts going around after like “thank god he didn’t die because I really need to bitch about this.”
Tumblr media
💫 I love all three Uhuras (tos, aos, and snw) and I get why they made her Spock’s love interest here because they’ve got fun chemistry! They have a lot in common, they’re both hot and smart, I get it. But cmon guys, that man is a 6 on the Kinsey scale. You keep pairing him with women and it doesn’t work.
Tumblr media
💫 I feel like they worked in lots of little references to classic trek, from plot stuff to smaller details like when Spock enters from the turbolift at the end in a very TMP way. I love that, it makes me feel like the people making the movie really care about the stories and the characters. When Spock Prime says good luck I felt all the weight of his relationship with his Jim and how it changed him. So lovely and touching.
And just how close they made Kirk and Spock stand, especially towards the end of the movie. They were always glued to each other in TOS and JJ must have known us Spirk shippers needed something to latch on to 😅
Tumblr media
💫 There’s too much action in this movie for me. We didn’t need to see Scotty beamed into the water tank. The best sf stuff is always story based, I don’t need extravagant fights and cgi shit. I’m sure there are people who watch science fiction for the spectacle but I’m here for the ideas and the feelings.
Tumblr media
💫 goddddd everything with Vulcan and losing Amanda. Rip all our hearts out why don’t you. Spock’s mom dying is just heartbreaking. I know they had to lose someone we knew to make the destruction of the planet more real to us as viewers but so crushing to see it.
Tumblr media
💫 Old Spock 😭😭😭
He knows right away who Jim is and expects that Jim found him on purpose.
Old Spock just launched right in to the mind meld huh. To me this really says that he and his Jim are on very casual mind meld terms and he’s not fully understanding that this Jim is not his Jim.
Think about how fucking weird all this must be for old Spock. How heartbreakingly strange it would be so see a young version of your husband and send him to a young version of yourself. Meeting all your old friends young selves, years after you’ve lost them all.
Tumblr media
And from here out it’s just miscellaneous thoughts I jotted down while watching that don’t fit great anywhere else:
⭐️I love when the redshirt is so excited to get the Romulans and Kirk gets this look like… that’s why you’re here? Dude the battle not the appeal here. A nice glimpse of how this Kirk is similar at heart to TOS Kirk.
⭐️Love you Sulu and your fencing skills
⭐️I love when they stop the lift for emotional reasons.
⭐️“Our destinies have changed” goddddd great speech Spock
⭐️Jim has the look of a man who is frequently escorted places by security
⭐️Spock wants to break Kirk so bad 😂
⭐️When Jim slaps Spock’s back and Spock has a look of “I think that just awakened something in me.”
⭐️Spock you’re calling him Jim already? You slut. (Delighted, affectionate)
Overall I think it’s a fun movie but it misses a lot of what’s at the heart of the classic Trek I love. They try to do everything too fast and it just doesn’t work as well for me. I’m excited to rewatch the next two and see how these versions of the characters change!

I agree tenfold with the final sentences of Mod M's response.
@purpleshirtofkittens , Uhura being of African descent has EVERYTHING to do with her being a love interest. A Black woman as a love interest is a very good thing. Also, Spock and Uhura never truly broke up (except for maybe that brief parting in the 3rd reboot). And being a love interest IS NOT REDUCTIVE TO HER CHARACTER AT ALL.
BLACK FEMINISM IS DIFFERENT FROM WHITE FEMINISM.
She is still very much her own person, who IS NOT AFRAID TO STAND UP FOR HERSELF and advocate for herself WITH HER OWN VOICE. That very thing is what Nichelle Nichols couldn't even do, with all that she had to endure. And, that is what Uhura is doing in the scene in the first reboot where she confronts Spock about her posting. She's REMINDING HIM of her qualifications and TELLING HIM "I deserve better" WITH HER OWN VOICE. She's asking him why she is being denied the very thing that he has been given: a posting that befits her skillset, grades and qualifications. She's not "whining". From the comics, we see that she aced the Advanced Phonetics(?) class. She doesn't fuck around, she WORKS for her grades, she's a high achiever.
And you know what? He likes that about her. Her fire, her willingness to stand up for herself. She is no pushover. She's an equal.
Black feminism is different from white feminism.
As with the Qo'nos "argument" scene from the 2nd reboot, she spent several scenes in quiet and private moments in the comics trying to get Spock to talk about his trauma. HE'S GOT PTSD, suffering nightmares, losing sleep, LITERALLY THROWING HIMSELF INTO DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WITHOUT EXPLORING ALL THE OPTIONS as if his life wasn't worth living anymore. Everytime she tried to talk to him, to get him to realise how HARMFUL his actions are, he practically brushed it off. We see her becoming INCREASINGLY FRUSTRATED because he is LITERALLY GOING TO GET HIMSELF KILLED.
So, when the events of the 2nd reboot film come around, she needs to change her tact and picks the ONLY MOMENT SHE COULD FIND IN A FILM WITH A LOT GOING ON. Her change of tact is the shifting of focus from him onto herself. AND IT WORKED. He finally talked. It wasn't the setting that she would have preferred, but it was the only chance she had. So she took it. And, after all of those events in that film were over, I'm sure they would have taken the steps to help him cope with his trauma in a much less HARMFUL way. Together.
And, since you don't want to listen to Black fans or Fans Of Colour, I'm telling you as a white person: BLACK FEMINISM IS DIFFERENT FROM WHITE FEMINISM. White fans need to take a back seat and listen.
And, yes, I realise this thread is several years old, and yes I'm mad.
Kirk: I am Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise, and this is my First Officer Spock, and this is Spocks beard, Lieutenant Uhura,

On Greta Danesti...
Tumblr media
I'm just taking this time to correct a certain anti-Black, (and anti-Romani) sadly typical fandom troll's misogynoir fuckery in the tag and establishing who Greta Danesti is in canon Castlevania animation lore. This is Greta Danesti's official character sheet:
Tumblr media
She's the village headwoman of Danesti a few miles away from Alucard's castle. This is what her voice actress, Marsha Thompson looks like:
Tumblr media
It's pretty obvious her character design took cues from the actress, who is Afro-British. In show canon, however, her family escaped from the Roman city of Carthage, which today, is located in the African country Tunisia. Alucard correctly speculated where her people are from while conversing with her, here (s4 e5):
Tumblr media
Greta then confirms that her people did escape the Romans, but she now fully embraces her "family" in her village who are "from all over" and the responsibility of taking care of them.
This same troll used the g-slur to insist that she is Romani.
She is not. This troll used an early character design here, to make her case.:
Tumblr media
And though it does have similarities to Romani clothing... It also looks like it takes cues from Tunisian clothing and likely local and non-local European clothing of the era with "fantasy" elements sprinkled in, as well, which would match the fact of her village's people coming from all over:
Tumblr media
There definitely should be more Romani rep in media as it is so often whitewashed, but Greta is not Romani.
FYI, these women actors actually *are* of Romani descent: Fairuza Balk of The Craft, Oona Chaplin who played Robb Stark's wife in GOT (she's also Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter[!]), and Noomi Rapace from the Swedish movie, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo says her father may have been of Romani descent, as well.
And because I can predict it, as people like to find ways of discounting blackness in every way...
Yes, there are plenty of non-Black indigenous POC in North Africa, including within Tunisia. Another fun fact... Africa has more indigenous human genetic variation among its peoples than every other people on the planet has with everyone else on the planet[!]. All this to say non-white POC AND Black people are indigenous to Tunisia.
I feel I have to say that because there is a lot of anti-Black anthropological fetishization of North Africa. Egypt is a major example of that (see: Rami Malek, an indigenous Coptic Egyptian who self-identifies as African man of color and has likely had to clarify that *often* because people keep wanting to mislabel him as an Arab, but I digress...) And sadly, there is a decidedly anti-black movement to totally disconnect certain North African countries' identities from a continental African one, and to largely see it as mainly a part of the MENA world (it is both kiddies, BOTH). Here is an informative article (linked in the image) about that struggle:
Tumblr media
So, this got heavy...but between the post insisting that Greta is NOT Black and the one saying she's not bisexual because that same troll is purposefully and maliciously being obtuse about how words go together... I figured clearing some things up and educating folks might be helpful. BTW, the fact of those issues in the article makes her blackness all the more resonant as rep in pop culture. And hey, poly folks have disagreements, just like the het folks do... -Still bi. I'm gonna end here with two images from the linked article of anti-racist Tunisian protesters (MENA and Black):
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
P.S. I also side-eye those keen to make her muscular... I mean yeah she wields a big-ass hammer and shortsword/dagger, but the tendency to masculinize black woman characters deserves a hardy eye-squint. Especially, given that the show has *no problem* making muscular women look like that and they DIDN'T for Miss Greta.
See: Zamfir and the Berserk-style sword-carrying Vampire warrior, Striga. Both of whom had that flex going on.

Umm...I've stumbled across this, and...
https://at.tumblr.com/elvhenkind/watching-strange-new-worlds-and-what-the-fuck-did/dgxc8mqwxoqc
I feel like I can't say anything as this user is a Person of Colour (and I'm not), but I want to say something? Having being teased for sporting short hair (also, having an old man literally tell me I'm "ruining my life" just for the way I look), it kinda stings to see this commentary about SNW Uhura.
Ok so I answered it and we'll see what they said I've come at it from the angle that I'm feeling the most sensitive rn... like if my mom loses her hair because of the cancer I think I should shave my hair off too. I don't want my mom to feel ugly you know? anyways followers please help me come up with other relevant points! on the post!

Does anyone else feel like SNW was super low-key throwing shade at the Kelvin timeline movies Kirk Drift in that Uhura assumed Kirk was hitting on her when he wasn’t. He just wanted to see if he could be a friend cuz she was visibly stressed out while also being entertained by Spock playing chess?
Cuz I feel like it was, maybe, just a little

“Ensign,” said the new security officer next to her, recently assigned to Enterprise just that week, the only other Starfleet officer in this delightful room they were all trapped in. “Your purpose to this conference was assisting in diplomacy.” “Officer,” said Nyota. “Diplomatically, everyone needs to shut up.”
Uhura and Rand meet (cute) and accidentally solve a minor crisis in trade negotiations.

Leapin' Lenin, they forgot Chekhov!
Actually, they didn't. They just couldn't afford him.
In fact, the budget for Star Trek: The Animated Series was so low that George (Sulu) Takei and Nichelle (Uhura) Nichols were not going to be hired, either. The plan was to have James (Scotty) Doohan and Majel (Chapel) Barrett-Roddenberry provide those characters' voices.
Leonard Nimoy put a stop to that as soon as he found out. He found it unconscionable that the two actors of color from the original series were not coming back. So he threatened NBC and the producers: hire Takei and Nichols, or I walk.
Obviously there could be no Star Trek without Spock, so his demands were met. But there wasn't enough money to bring Walter (Chekhov) Koenig back. Chekhov was replaced with the alien navigator Lieutenant Arex, who was voiced (as were many, many characters on the show) by Doohan.
The producers did manage to throw Koenig a bone: he was able to sell a script, The Infinite Vulcan, which was the seventh episode of the animated series' first season. This also made Koenig the first Star Trek actor to write an episode for the, then in its infancy, franchise.

Like how you called linda park pretty. usually many women of color are never recognised for their great beauty in comparison to their white counterparts. she is korean, sadly now with nu trek, the show is obsessed with making women of color very ugly and masculine. look at the new uhura from strange new worlds, she is made to look like a man and is very unattractive. a far cry from the iconic nichelle nichols from TOS, Who became a ground breaking female character. so just want to say from a star trek fan thank you for praising the beauty of women of colour.

before i go to bed bc i have been doing a lot of research- it’s *intensely* funny people whine about “gene's vision” whenever star trek is mildly transgressive like. i mean for one the dude stuffed the series with as much sex as he could in the time periods he was alive if he saw modern star trek and what’s possible on the air nowadays he'd probably say it needed to be way hornier lol. but also like. gene was progressive in his time outside of his fucking ridiculous level of misogyny. and even with that people who were Not Gene because turns out multiple people are involved in production of a whole tv show were often progressive in that area including women who obviously didn’t share the nightmare sexism gene had. and the series heavily reflected that, even if it’s not obvious today (since progressive for the 60s is usually intensely bigoted now). if the series wanted to be accurate to that it should actually be way more transgressive to the point it makes blunders bc the writers are tired from arguing with network executives. where’s the equivalent of the first interracial kiss on television guys ur playing it way too safe.
