heir to the house of black only because sirius is a boy, but sirius isnt a boy, shes a girl, and not only does she disagree with everything her family stands for, she doesnt feel like she can be the heir because shes not a man. and she would never tell her family that she feels that way because she knows what they would do to her, but her mother walks in on her experimenting with makeup, and what can sirius possibly say? how can she smooth this over? it doesnt matter, because walburga black is a skilled legilimens and discovers exactly how sirius feels about herself. walburga does her best to torture these unacceptable and unnatural feelings out of her child, but of course it doesnt work. and this is sirius' breaking point, because this was the moment she realized she couldnt live the rest of her life as a boy, but she couldnt remain a member of this family as a girl, either. so she runs away to her best friends house, and james and his parents take her in without question. and several months later, when she tells her new family that shes a girl, not a boy, they accept her without question in a way that her old family never would have dreamed of doing

but also - the more i think about it, the more i think remus would 100% be butch. maybe she spent the first couple of years after she came out dressing as hyper femme as possible, expensive makeup and growing her hair, long nails and short skirts. fast-forward like six months into hrt and she starts wearing briefs and cuts her hair into a mullet, and stops wearing bras when her tits start to grow - shaves her face and chest but not her legs.

she never got to be a tomboy as a kid, and masculinity felt dangerous when it was something that was expected of her. then she came out and the pendulum swung in the opposite direction and she just -doesn’t want to think about it anymore. stops measuring her womanhood by cis people’s standards and finds other lesbians who get her and everything fits together, then.

Marauders/Emeralds Era Characterisation/Builds/Backgrounds in my fics

-I’ve seen a few newbies looking for head-canons to try out in their fics. Feel free to use any of these.

-there is some variation, of course, plus some of my fics are set at the younger Hogwarts ages, but usually in this order from tallest to shortest as adults:

Remus Lupin (6’ 1”-6’4”) - typically an inch or two taller than James, but rarely quite tall. Lanky, long-limbed with curly dirty blond/light brown hair. Sometimes, he’s stronger than he looks, other times he’s a wet noodle. Disabled (usually physically, but sometimes with Tourette’s or Epilepsy). Introvert. Classic literature/fantasy novel buff. Neutral Good. Welsh. Bisexual with a preference for men. Smokes occasionally, prefers weed.

James Potter (around 6’) - athletic with strong upper body, solid but rarely super muscular. Wears glasses, intelligent, and has ADHD. Chaotic Good. Messy curls. Wide open music taste, but always Queen and a sucker for a ballad. Deep voice. Extrovert. Deeply romantic. Usually Desi via Euphemia, but love the Latinx James hc. Bisexual>Pansexual (used interchangeably for James). Non-smoker.

Barty Crouch Jr. (around 6’) - athletic, but slim. This man has no arse. Stronger than he looks. British, but love the hc that he’s Italian. Burnt out gifted kid, occasionally tech savvy. Heavy-metal and emo fan. Usually has ODD. Extrovert. Chaotic Evil. Omnisexual or Bi with a preference for mascs. Often with tattoos and/or piercings. Heavy smoker.

Dorcas Meadowes (5’9-5’11) - athletic, or slender with some curves. Black, British, and the most intelligent of the group. Long braids. Ambivert. Love her characterisation as a good Slytherin. True Neutral. Listens to R&B, but secretly loves pop music, mostly sapphic artists. Occasionally has Depression. Neither butch or femme exclusive, bit of both. Bisexual or Lesbian. Non-smoker.

Evan Rosier (5’9”-5’10”) - painfully average floppy-haired blond white boy with a tan. Neutral Evil. Solid build. Grunge music fan. Piercings rather than tattoos. French or British. Ambivert. Demisexual. Prefers edibles or shrooms to smoking.

Regulus Black (5’7”-5’10”) - usually a hair taller than Sirius, but he was shorter by a bit once or twice. Chin-length wavy hair. French. Writer (poetry) and/or musical prodigy. Introvert. Slim to average build. Lawful Evil. Anxiety, OCD, and/or Autistic. Classical music or jazz, nothing with lyrics. I have written him as intersex (or trans in a few WIPs), but usually a gay cis man. Non-smoker, mostly. Social drinker, but overestimates his tolerance.

Sirius Black (5’8”-5’10”) - most attractive amongst the guys. Usually slim, but strong and flexible. Highly intelligent, but easily bored and uninterested in academics. Artistic (painter) and/or musical (percussion instruments). Rock/grunge junkie. Shoulder-length hair and tattooed. Chaotic Good/Chaotic Neutral. Sometimes ADD, often emotionally stunted with abandonment issues. Heavy drinker, occasional smoker.

Mary McDonald (5’8”-5’10”) - depends on the fic, but always in heels so she seems taller. Curvy queen. Most attractive and socially aware of the entire group, extremely trendy, designs/sews a lot of her own clothes, high-femme. Prefers soulful music and light pop. Popular, but keeps her emotions buried. High expectations. Does not suffer fools. Lawful Neutral. Black, British, and extroverted. Natural hair. Social smoker and drinker. Neurotypical. Aromantic or lesbian.

Lily Evans (5’6”-5’8”) - very curvy to plus-size. Super long dark red hair, often braided with a fringe. Academic overachiever, Lawful Good, pretty, and fiery/defensive when confronted. Fantasy book nerd. Introvert. Neurotypical with anxiety. Pop music girlie. Artistic (usually sketching). Welsh/British. Non-smoker. Bisexual>Pansexual (used interchangeably for Lily) or Femme Lesbian, but rarely wears make-up.

Marlene McKinnon (around 5’6”) - athletic/ stocky queen with thick thighs. Blonde, usually in a ponytail and shoulder-length with fringe. Scottish/British. Music-obsessed (mostly 70-80s rock) and lives in band tees and Docs. Tattooed. Extrovert. Chaotic Neutral. Social smoker, but rarely. ADHD. Butch lesbian who loves eye-liner. Occasional short skirt to break Dorcas’s brain.

Peter Pettigrew (5’5”-5’7”) - stocky/plus-size, straight blond hair. British. Logical and strategic, but struggles with abstract concepts. Chess player, comic book collector, video game/movie buff, and weed fiend, but non-smoker. People-pleaser and supportive of his friends, but ambivalent around strangers. Ambivert. Asexual, unlabeled, Questioning.

Pandora Lovegood (5’-5’3”) - always petite and slim. Long blonde hair, usually loose or in elaborate half-updos (like Phoebe Buffet in Friends). Hippie vibes and high-femme. Usually Autistic. Ambivert -depends on who she’s with. French. Animal lover, compassionate, high-strung, a gossip but rarely maliciously, collects crystals. Pansexual. Non-smoker, but open to experimentation. Rarely drinks.

Why Short Sirius Black Mattered to Me

So I'm having some feelings about the whole "sirius black is tall" discussion that's circling my dash right now, and I don't want to comment on anyone else's posts with my *feelings* because it really doesn't relate to the actual factual information they're sharing, but I did want to put them out there.

At first I felt pretty defensive about how angry people seem over people headcanoning Sirius as shorter than Remus, and I am still taken aback by the level of anger/frustration being felt about this whole thing by some. But I am also a very logical person so I read the posts and I mean, the "sirius black is tall" people are not wrong. It is canon that Sirius is tall, I just read @pommedeplume's post about it that really laid it all out well and with the canon sources (thank you for doing that, btw), and yeah, it's just true. Sirius Black is canonically tall.

But I'm still finding that I feel hurt by the discourse around it (namely, the animosity toward the "short sirius black" idea), and I wanted to flesh that out a bit -- not because I'm trying to tell someone to change their thoughts/opinions/feelings, but just because, maybe this will offer some insight into why short Sirius Black is fanon and means something to some people.

I didn't always imagine Sirius as shorter than Remus, but personally, since returning to the fandom after transitioning to a trans man, I started imagining him as 5'10" (~178cm) or so and Remus as 6'1 (~185cm) or so, mainly because I started reading fics about Trans Sirius Black and they were just so...validating. Trans men try to make ourselves feel better about being shorter and not having dicks by calling ourselves "short king" or "tiny dick solidarity" or whatever, but frankly, it's incredibly dysphoric, especially as a gay trans man. It's intimidating and sucks to know that most of the guys I am attracted to and want to be with will be 5-7 inches (13-18cm) taller than me.

So there was something about picturing Sirius Black, who I already relate to as a person, being able to contain all of his big personality, all of his attractiveness, all of the things about him that make him so Sirius Black in a body that was simply an average height for a man. Not even my height! Just a height that didn't make him feel cosmically out of reach from me. And, really, that's often the driving force behind something that becomes fanon -- a thing that makes the character more relatable to the readers. Because 6'2" (188cm) Sirius Black is not a trans man (I mean, obviously some trans men are that tall, but...clearly that is VERY rare), and doesn't feel like he could be a trans man. And as someone who is a minority and doesn't get that representation ever, it's nice to feel like there are small things about the characters you love that mean that maybe they could be like you, too.

What I'm trying to say is - I think that short Sirius Black came from the queering of the marauder fandom, which as an older queer person who only recently came out, is really cool to see. I definitely don't agree with all of the fandom interpretations of characters that have come from this queering (i.e. femme sirius), but I'm also just...not gonna tell people how to view this character who might be helping them feel more safe and proud about their own identity. Short Sirius Black makes me feel less shitty about being a short guy. And seeing everyone be really pissed at the idea that Sirius Black is imagined by some people as short...hurts. At the end of the day, I know it's about just wanting to stick to canon, and I get that. I am that way about a lot of things. I just wonder if we can be more understanding of why people might be clinging onto what they want to believe is canon. Because I'll be honest, I'm disappointed to have read that it really is canon that he's a tall guy. I'm gonna change how I picture him and Remus (flip their heights basically), and I'll live. But I wonder, at what point can we say that sticking to canon is less important than letting people feel represented by their interpretation of a character?

thoughts on transgender!narcissa?

tbh I have the hopelessly uncool understanding of their characters that their (cis) (birth assigned) gender actually matters A LOT for not only their individual characterizations but also the Black family as a whole. Daughter, daughter, daughter, [years], SON!, second son. It shapes who Sirius is and what pressure is on him. It shapes Bellatrix -- who was heir by default before losing it to her male cousin and then she becomes Just Another Girl, contributing to her real complex around gender. 

(though tbh trans femme Regulus who never gets a chance to really explore that identity because she dies a teenager absolutely works for me) 

I think trans headcanons with the family tend to work better in a modern setting which is not quite so intensely patriarchal and obsessive around having sons. BUT! that all said I do really enjoy them. 

I loveee @siriusly-sapphic's trans Narcissa headcanons. 

Narcissa basically is able to give up on performing boyhood for the family because of Sirius, but she feels like this (transitioning) was the only thing she could ask of her family and so feels this intense internal drive to be the perfect pureblood woman in order to basically apologize for being who she is. She's not having a good time! She's very much like "I'm not good enough so I must Try Harder" so there's a real brittleness and cruelty there -- she's so cruel to herself so she ends up being cruel to others, especially those who fail at performing their social roles well enough. Delicious! Painful! 

I wrote that characterization into my little trans Narcissa fic:

butch dyke bookshop keeper remus lupin meets femme dyke sirius black. thats it. thats the fic. they will talk about gender and sexuality. black sisters (sirius and reg) angst, remus not always passing, them talking about it, sirius thinks remus is the sexiest woman she has ever seen in her entire life, explicit sex scenes but like. in a way where they’re figuring things out together. like the entire fic is just me exploring gender and sexuality and projecting onto lesbian wolfstar. specifically like dyke themes. like they’ll be having very heavy discussions about what gender means to them, what sexuality means to them, lesbianism, trans butch remus struggling with the concept of ”male privelige” while identifying as a woman but not being percieved as one, sirius being the dykiest dyke that ever dyked because shes rebelling against her family, while reg is more of a ”im just a lesbian” and she still wants a traditional wedding and struggling with still wanting to conform to societal expectations even though she’s not even allowed back home anymore, dyke throuple lilyrosekiller, dyke jily exes who were ”good” lesbians. a dog a house and only heterosexual friends. jamie and lils talking about how it hurt both of them to try to have a heterosexual relstionship even though they’re lesbians. lesbian jegulus. and MORE!!!!!!!!

my hp trans fest 2022 faves

canon-adherent--canon-plausible--fics are my thing in general -- ones in which writers take key canon events and details and use them as a jumping-off point around which to weave their own narratives. there's something about that that feels very satisfying, reclaiming almost, especially from the angle of trans fest. anyway -

Lay down your armour (be with me forever) by @bluesundaycake (E, 21k, severus snape/remus lupin) [rb the author's tumblr post!]. A story told over a decade of encounters, where a body feels like a graveyard and another like a battlefield, and names are whispered tenderly until they feel real.

a canon-compliant snupin from the hogwarts-era period through to first war. fantastic severus characterization, what a gorgeously bittersweet romance. an absolute masterclass in first-person POV, made me feel so many feelings.

Damp grass scratches against the napes of their necks, presses into the backs of their Oxfords; the star-soaked night sky blankets them like a soft flannel. The moon is waning, a fat yellow grin pasted above them, and Remus thinks maybe, wildly, that for once it is not mocking him, that its smile is true, that tonight—just tonight—it is on his side.

7 - HOT CHOCOLATE - Tight Spaces by @krethes (3.2k, T) - mwpp-era remus-trauma / remus’ werewolf childhood. lots of hurt but tons of lovely comfort after, and delightful marauders friendship.

Instead, he was jostled in a bone-crushing hug, sloshing hot-but-not-scalding cocoa on the blanket in the suddenness. Sirius buried his head into his shoulder and held him so tightly Remus thought he might snap in half. Remus's cheeks were wet and, embarrassed, he realized he was crying. He hadn't expected such a response from Sirius, who was usually joking or brooding, never something so gentle, so sincere.

hi!! if its not a bother, i was wondering if you had any recommendations for older(second war or post war) wolfstar. i wanted to get into WS since its very popular and there are many fics but i dislike the idea that they dated at all pre PoA. you have such good taste in fics i thought i should ask!

"No, look, it's harmless," Sierra tells her, clearly frustrated with Narcissa for how concerned she is. She takes a bit of the enchanted dye and grabs a random strand of her own curls. She speaks the charm's evocation with a dismissive drawl and the curl turns as white as parts of Narcissa's hair. Sierra kisses the corner of Narcissa's mouth, standing behind her to look in the mirror. Narcissa likes the way her hair looks now — two-toned black and platinum blonde that previously had been golden. Sierra's idea, naturally. She had gotten a tattoo, and Narcissa would dye her hair, Sierra's way of officiating their transitions and their sure to be bright futures. Narcissa thinks it's a little dramatic, but she looks good. Still, she needs to be able to undo this before going home to her mother. "All temporary," Sierra assures her, waving her wand with the intention of removing the dye from her hair. Nothing happens. She silently tries again, avoiding Narcissa's growingly anxious gaze. The white curl remains. Narcissa's anxiety turns to anger as easily as an unconcerned grin appears on her cousin's face. "What did you do?" She hisses, taking her own wand to try it herself. Nothing changes. "Mother will kill me!" "And the rest of the world will think you're hot," Sierra shrugs. "Your mother hates the rest of you already, what's one more thing?" She runs her fingers through Narcissa's dyed hair, kissing her cheek. Despite her anger, Narcissa leans into her touch. "You like it, hm?" She asks, grinning victoriously when Narcissa nods. “That’s that then. You’re welcome, love.”
