Making tortell de reis, traditional dessert for the Three Wise Men holiday (January 6th).
These cakes have a figurine of a king and a bean hidden in them. When the cake is cut and given to the family members, whoever gets the king will wear the crown, and whoever gets the bean will pay for the cake next year.

So usually for 6th of January in Spain there's this dessert, that has a king figure inside and a bean. If you find the king you get to wear a paper crown. If you find the bean, you pay for it.
But finally someone made a Republican version :D.
(In Catalan it says "no king no crowns". Instead there's a caganer and a barretina to wear)

What do amor and alexia do during Christmas time? Do they have any traditions?
Oooo this is a good one
So Amor and Ale’s Christmases growing up were very different
Spanish winter vs English winter are very different and the traditions are very different too
Amor is a little confused over the shit related holiday traditions - mainly the Caga Tió (the pooping log) and Caganer (the Christmas ‘crapper’). Amor defo gets very into it even if she doesn’t fully understand the traditions (especially around Ale’s cousin’s kids and whatnot)
She loves the grapes at New Year’s idea. If she’s at a party she’s 100% down to do it, but if it’s just Amor and Ale she’s not too fussed, if Ale wants to do it, she’ll happily whip the grapes out.
Amor goes all out for Reis d’Orient (the Three Kings) - she always offers to bake the Tortell de Reis and definitely loves getting the pressies for the kids (and Ale)
Alexia is equally as baffled by the British traditions. She’s not really used to a cold Christmas, and that’s definitely something she has to get used to. She thinks Christmas Pudding is vile (so does Amor so that’s not really a loss) and loves a Cracker. She’s not a giant fan of mince pies either.
She doesn’t understand the hype about the Christmas adverts but she smiles and nods along when Amor shows her the John Lewis one (Amor decides that it is officially Christmas when the John Lewis advert comes out)
Ale is not opposed to a roast, but she definitely prefers Spanish/Catalan food. (When they eventually have kids they come up with a Catalan Roast and it’s a random mix of Catalan and British food and it becomes their own family tradition)
They usually split the holiday between England and Spain, usually flying to Amor’s family before Christmas, then coming home and spending Christmas Day in Barcelona doing absolutely nothing (maybe some Christmas sex) before going to Alexia’s family after Christmas. New Year’s is usually reserved for friends/parties/etc. it remains the same when they have kids (Amor’s family before Christmas, the actual day just as a family, and Ale’s side after the holiday)

Is today a bigger holiday than Christmas Day in Spain?
in many aspects, yes. so three kings' day (dia de reis/día de los reyes) is the day traditionally in which spanish households open gifts, so yes it has a lot of importance culturally because children wait all year for this day to open presents (not christmas day!) 🎁
in christianity, the story goes that on this day, the three kings (three wise men) saw a star (star of bethlehem) that led them to the baby jesus. when they saw the baby, they gifted him with gold, frankincense and myrrh. in spain before three kings' day we hold a cavalcade (parade) of the three kings (cavalcada dels reis d'orient/cabalgata de reyes magos) in most cities, towns, and villages around the country. by tradition, the kings on the parade are on their way to deliver presents to all the children and often throw candies and goodies to people watching the parade. (here's alexia on the parade route many years ago! 🥳 )
on three kings' day itself, we open the presents received from the kings and celebrate by eating 'king cake' (tortell de reis/roscón de reyes). what's unique about the cake is that there are two items baked inside: a bean and a tiny king. whoever gets the king is 'king for the day' and whoever gets the bean needs to buy the cake for next year! 😋
so yes, it is a very important day culturally and religiously!

Casca de reis 🍰 a cake made of marzipan stuffed with candied sweet potato, candied egg yolk or pumpkin. It's made in the shape of a ring, a snake or another animal, and accompanied with dragée almonds, dried fruit, anise sweets, candied pumpkin and other candied fruits.
The casca is from the Valencian Country, where it's eaten on Three Wise Men Day (January 6th, the day we get the Christmas presents brought by the Three Wise Men), traditionally either brought by godparents as a gift for their godchildren or as a gift left by the Three Wise Men. Families can choose either this casca de reis or the other traditional dessert for the holiday, tortell de reis.
This recipe is documented since at least the year 1520, when it appears in the recipe book Llibre del Coc by Mestre Robert. The word "casca" (in diminutive, "casqueta") already appears in a list of sweets that are part of a poem by in Jaume Roig's famous book Espill, published in 1460.
