🎶 Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans 🎶
At the end of Rampart Street stood New Orleans’ train depot, long one of the centers for the comings and goings of the busy city. It had opened in 1892, when New Orleans was at a zenith of growth and culture. Now it was beginning to show the cracks and wear of age, but every inch of the space still reflected the spirit of a bygone era.
It was filled with the comings and goings of businessmen, new arrivals, families, and those fleeing the city for greener pastures. Intermingled beneath the shadows of the glass roof, they vacillated between hope and fear, embracing in reunion or waving in farewell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Near noon, a train pulled into the station and a shiver of anticipation passed through the crowd. A stream of passengers began to exit, filing into the gilded corridors into the city beyond. On the other side those waiting to embark sat at attention or stepped nearer to the platform, listening for the boarding call from the conductor. Amongst them stood a small family of four, each running through a kaleidoscope of emotions all their own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seemed positively surreal to each one of them that this was goodbye, that it was perhaps the last glimpse they’d have of New Orleans before it turned into nothing but a colorful blur outside of the steamer’s windows.
Perhaps it was easiest for Zelda and Antoine to board the train, for they both knew the moment they stepped off of it there was more promise for them than there had ever been. It was not the first time that Zelda had left her home on such hope, and a small spark of adventure flared up within her, imagining the towering orange hills of fantasy novels that she would get to see. It seemed like a whole new world, the mere thought of which made her feel young again.
Even Antoine, whose path to reach this point had been more difficult than he would ever admit, felt more excitement at that moment than sorrow. A burden had been lifted from his shoulders, one that would only lighten with each bump along the railroad track West.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His sister, although seemingly more willing to leave than he had ever been, held no illusions about what waited for her at the end of the journey. She knew that at the train depot in New Mexico waited a man she loved and who loved her in return, a man who had offered her a life that she was supposed to want, but that she had turned down once before.
But she had never left New Orleans, never knew what it might be like outside of this crescent of sin and memories surrounded by murky waters. She pulled her niece close and smiled down at her, entertaining for a moment that perhaps she was only afraid, and perhaps their lives would be better at the end of their train journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For looking down at Violette, Josephine was sure of one thing: her niece’s eyes held no fear. They stared at the steamer in unabashed, child-like wonder. It was perhaps the grandest thing that Violette had ever seen, grander even than the painted facades of her home city or the glittering electric lights shimmering off of her mother’s dress as she sang.
Why would she be afraid? She was with her family. Her father was with them this time, and he would never leave again, she was sure of it. And the train was there to take them all West, to the seemingly fabled land where her aunt promised her all of her dreams would come true.

"[Elizabeth Woodville] was the only member of [Crown Prince Edward of Westminster's] original 1471 council not already on the king’s council and her name headed the list of those appointed as administrators in Wales during Edward’s minority. [She remained on the council after it was expanded in 1473 and granted additional governing and judicial powers]."
"In 1478 Prince Richard married the Mowbray heiress. Like his elder brother he had a chancellor, seal, household and council to manage his estates. His council, like that of Prince Edward, comprised the queen [Elizabeth Woodville] and a group of magnates and bishops, few of whom were Woodville supporters. [...] It was Elizabeth who mattered, for Richard resided with her and Rivers treated his affairs as their own."
— J.L. Laynesmith, The Last Medieval Queens: English Queenship 1445-1503 / Michael Hicks, Richard III and his Rivals: Magnates and their Motives in the Wars of the Roses
#good👏🏻 for 👏🏻 her#historicwomendaily#elizabeth woodville#15th century#english history#princes in the tower#my post#Reminder that these sort of additional official positions in governance were very unusual (unprecedented) for late medieval English queens#Elizabeth's formal appointment in royal councils (+ authority over her sons) should not be ignored or downplayed in the slightest bit#It should instead be considered one of the most defining aspects of her queenship that spanned over a decade and lasted right till the end#& should also be highlighted as one of the most vital topics of discussion when it comes to broader queenly power in late medieval England#I think it also says a lot about Elizabeth's relationship to Edward IV and the regard he seems to have had for her capabilities#'The only member of the original 1471 council not already on the king’s council' that speaks VOLUMES. Once again: good for her.#It's also really frustrating how some historians (Katherine J. Lewis; AJ Pollard; Laynesmith etc) have incredibly lopsided perspectives on#Elizabeth that fundamentally *do not work* when you remember these actual facts and what they reveal about her power and influence#I'm also still baffled at Lynda Pidgeon's claim that 'Elizabeth's influence with Edward IV was less than with family members who were#part of the king's council or that of her son Edward prince of Wales'. Like???????#First of all - we *already know* that Elizabeth had the most personal influence with Edward and was the one he trusted the most#The case in 1480 & his own will in 1475 (where he referred to her as the one 'in whom we most singularly place our trust') make both clear#Second of all - ELIZABETH WAS LITERALLY ON HER SONS' COUNCILS HERSELF. HER NAME HEADED THE GODDAMN LIST. How have you missed this????????#It's actually bizarre because it completely ignores the fact that 1) Late medieval queens *weren't* generally given positions like this?#If we accept Pidgeon's (false) interpretation we have to claim that NONE of them were influential at all#Which I'm pretty sure nobody agrees with? So why have I seen people agreeing with Pidgeon's FALSE take on Elizabeth based on that lmfao?#2) Elizabeth WAS in fact given such positions. She genuinely was given unusual authority and was an Exception™ rather than the rule#Forget emphasizing her atypical role - Pidgeon has outright erased it in an effort to diminish her#She does the same thing when talking about Elizabeth's role after Edward IV's death and it's equally ridiculous and incorrect#There's stupidity and then there's willful misreading & rewriting of history according to your own imagination. This fits the latter

Aegon is definitely not OOC. He shows off Jaehaerys like a pet but has no idea what time he should be at lessons. It's been three weeks since his coronation, three weeks since he raped Dyana. He hasn't grown as a person at all. We're just seeing different facets of him but people need to be spoonfed every trait of a character constantly to keep from spilling out of their brain. He appreciates the smallfolk because he's spent so much time drinking and whoring with them, but he has no respect for someone who obviously has more experience than him (Otto) and thinks he has more of an advantage being nice to people who were themselves forced to be nice to him when he was among them because he's a royal. He doesn't treat his mother's counsel with any respect either despite watching her rule the kingdom for years on her own. His weak moment of do you love me was just that, a weak moment. As soon as he gets drunk, he turns into a monster. He's stupid, clever, arrogant, predatory and a host of other things. People just don't think critically enough anymore in fandom.
thank you. thank you. thank you. thank you. thank you. you put it perfectly into words. aegon is just acting like a child who's enjoying the novelty of newfound purpose in life. and like most addicts/abusers, he'll have his high days... then he'll have his LOW days. it's been one episode - we'll see him hit his low, probably even as soon as next episode.
this fandom makes me feel like i'm losing my mind like is it not clear that he's kind of doing a bad job at ruling/parenting? or at least, a very superficial job? is it "ooc" or are you not allowing the writers to portray him in anyway aside from the one dimensional image you already have of him in his head ??
We're just seeing different facets of him but people need to be spoonfed every trait of a character constantly to keep from spilling out of their brain.
genuinely i don't know why people just aren't using context clues anymore. just not thinking. or, holy fuck, just WONDERING? 😭whenever a character does something "ooc".... why not WONDER why they're doing it, rather than reacting so shallowly ??? some good writing advice i once saw was "don't ask 'is this action out of character for x', and rather ask, 'what would drive x to do this action'?" people are complex plsss 😭😭😭
also you make an excellent point about aegon aligning himself with smallfolk b/c he was more at home amongst them than with his noble family.
and tbh this is feeling like specifically a hotd issue? every tv show has bad takes but hotd has been genuinely unbearable. i watch other prestige tv or 'layered' shows and people seem to generally have the idea of the characters? succession, interview with the vampire, breaking bad, ozark, etc.
wondering if GOT S6-8 PTSD genuinely has made this fandom lose faith in the writing and they're choosing to take everything so face value now.

where is my lockwood & co. crossover with bridgerton in which lockwood & co. somehow time travel to the regency period and now have to deal with the time era’s bullshit whilst also figure out how The Problem is a thing in the early 1800’s when it hadn’t even existed… this is exactly what george wants to investigate. they get dragged to a time where The Problem was active and yet it has never been documented. meanwhile, locklyle were just getting their footing and being semi-more-flirty each other and now they can’t interact in private without a goddamn chaperone. do you think that stops either one of them— fuck no. but it creates so many fun situations. and in total, the trio goes out nightly more or less every time there’s ghost activity.
#i like to think that it took a while for children to develop the seeing ghosts thing#like some of the kids right now in the regency era can see weird stuff or hear weird stuff but are basically told from a young age#to not ‘act out’ or ‘talk like a loony’ etc#and so they had to kind of push it down#till later in the decades talent just increased more until it was just there especially when the problem came a knockin’#eloise goes insane over lucy. like not only does she look vv similar to her litle sister but she’s COOL#and yes there will be a subtle implied subject that lucy is decended from a bridgerton- most likely franny- but its never like a big thing#its mainly ‘oh fuck one of these arseholes is my ancestor and if they die i may cease to exist. oh well.’#and then its lockwood ‘OH FUCK ONE OF THESE ARSEHOLES IS LUCE’S ANCESTORS AND IF THEY DIE SHE MAY CEASE TO EXIST’#so thats why he takes a bigger interest in protecting them more or less; but it’s never gonna be like a HUGE thing its just a thing#who would george get along with#i havent seen bridgerton in a minute#i would write it but i have zero knowledge about regency era stuff#like ill write lockwood & co. in my sleep but i got no clue how the regency era scandal™️ works#do i have to rewatch bridgerton again; im just gonna skip to the s*x scenes we both know this#and the lady danbury scenes too#like thats all i’d end up rewatching#lockwood and lucy#lockwood and co#anthony lockwood#lucy carlyle#george karim#lockwood & co x bridgerton#hyacinth and george can see ghosts totes but the rest of the bridgertons as well as older teens have pushed the talent down#theyre sensitives and thats it#is that how it works#im making it up as i go#should i make a whole new type 4 that can time travel. is that allowed? can anyone stop me?#should lockwood meet kipps’ ancestor and start the rivalry from decades earlier bc he’s THAT petty

i AM anime critical of so much stuff lol i love to complain abt how stuff is adapted but truly i love it. even if they change so many seemingly minor but important details. and even some clearly extremely relevant ones. would love to see how they fix all of that if they ever adapt the whole series. s15 and they go ah shit. that was actually relevant 13 seasons later. or whatever. because midorikawa IS really good at doing that.

Yeah just so everyone is aware. Almost a decade ago to the month a dumb doodle I drew between classes (I would have been a sophmore in high school I think?) with colored pencil and sparkly nail polish was featured on the Rammstein website. I almost wanna redraw this lol

So I like... I really don't know how I feel about the whole bi-regeneration thing.
Something that sours it for me is like... I was so upset that we were only gonna get the 3 eps with 14 and Donna - ideally for me we would have had a whole season or even a half-season to do them justice. It made me sad that I'd have to say goodbye to them so soon. Tho I did take comfort in that there'd basically be an open invitation for Donna cameos in the future, in a similar way to the Kate Stewart and Unit ones.
HOWEVER. Now??? As much as I fucking adore Donna and David Tennant as the Doctor... I kinda never wanna see them on screen again??? Cause I feel like it sorta cheapens the concept of the 15th Doctor and all the other future adventures he'll have. It was one thing with Tentoo cause he was banished to another universe and was limited to a mortal's lifespan. But having two fully fledged Doctors??? Both with Tardises??? In the same universe???
It doesn't just cheapen the 15 Doctor and all future Doctors, imo it also cheapens David Tennant himself. Because there's a bittersweet beauty in letting go. In saying goodbye. Of accepting the next phase in life. The bi-regeneration doesn't do that. There's no closure. There's no faint loss accompanying the joyous rebirth. It's just.
It just feels very emotionally hollow.
#And it's so so annoying cause I was LOVING the episode till the bi-regeneration thing#But that moment really took me out of the episode#Suddenly I was watching some sort of parody or Red Nose Day segment#Fun maybe but ultimately hollow#And it honestly soured the episode for me#Imo the bi-regeneration never should've happened#Also - it was a beautiful way to say goodbye to 14! A gorgeous moment! And juxtapositioning 'I don't want to go' with 'Alonsy'? *chefs kiss*#We could have had Ncuti finish the episode#Secure to go on adventuring in the Tardis knowing he has his extended family waiting for him on earth for holidays and brunches and whenever#It could have been a beautiful homage#Honouring the past and carrying it with while continuing on to the future#THAT'S how the episode should have ended#Not this cheap parody badly written fanfiction#AND ANOTHER THING - as much as I fucking adore Donna the Doctor HAS slowed down before and had family#He had it with the Ponds he had 900+ years on Trenzalore he had it 24 years on Darillium with River#he had it for decades while at the University guarding Missy#THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE DOCTOR HAS DONE THIS#And to act like this is the First Time™ or the Only Time That Matters™ cheapens the Doctor's journey and all past relationships#It ignores and belittles everything that came after 10 regenerated and in doing so Donna herself is cheapened#Because it puts her on this shiny pedestal above all others that kind of makes me resent her a little even tho I fucking adore her#Like she's my gd profile pic for gods sake but this Golden Child™ treatment really rubs the wrong way#doctor who#dw spoilers#Dw#David Tennant#biregeneration#14th doctor#ncuti gatwa#15th doctor#doctor who 60th anniversary

I mean like. Not to bring the mood down but... you guys know that's because American media is everywhere right? Like the world is unable to avoid some version of American accent on a regular basis. Of course ppl find it easy to mimic. This is absolutely not restricted to ppl in the UK, its really common for ppl who learn English as a foreign language to have perfect 'American actor' accents (cause the reason everyone's so good at the American accent that's expected of them as actors is cause at large there's little distinction between regions in the 'Hollywood accent' that ends up on TV and films and stuff. You guys have massive regional differences in pronounceation, but what makes it on to TV (in 9/10 cases) is a very standardised version of American English.)
But yeah. It's not just actors lol. Most British ppl can speak in a passable american accent, as can loads and loads of people worldwide. I'm not saying this to be like 'you should feel guilty! 😡' but it does always stun me when Americans are unaware of the impact their country has worldwide on all versions of English (and even on use of native languages. Many countries are using English more and more over their native languages and dialects , and yeah, historical colonialism has had an impact there.)
But in the last few decades things have progressed way way faster and that, is thanks to the impact of anglo/american/ect lead capitalism. I'm in no way dismissing the impact the UK has on this, but in recent years, its the US that is largely pushing that train .While the UK and several English speaking commonwealth countries are very involved in this kind of capitalist imperialism, there's a reason that more and more people are speaking American English. Not one of the many UK dialects, not Australian English, or NZ English. Across the world more and more people are increasingly speaking in the same standardised american dialect that's in so much of the media you export. Hollywood based media, with that standardised accent/ dialect and the standardised 'normal american life', has a stranglehold on the world and I just find it crazy that a lot of you guys don't even know.
It's stupid stuff like. So many countries are importing american cars and are widening their roads/ changing town planning to account for it (this is less of a thing in the UK but I see it more and more when I travel). Its the food becoming avaliable everywhere. Its the influence that for profit healthcare has even on countries with socialised health systems. Its houses being built to account for American style appliances. Fashion trends. Worldwide, everything is slowly evolving to be closer and closer to this 'American standard' which honestly? I really don't think actually represents the lives of real American people either. You've been turned in to products, the system has taken an unrealistic snapshot of 'American life' and it's being sold to you all day in day out, but it's also being sold to the rest of us. It's being pushed on us all.
Kids in the UK go through phases of talking only in American accents. Anyone born later than the 90s is carrying round 2 sets of spelling and vocab, cause we're all so used to the American way, that you barely know which one you're using half of the time. In the UK we have always had really strong regional accents yeah, and dialects differ between areas that seem tiny to you guys, I know. But like. Those dialects are being lost cause all UK accents are evolving to become closer to this standardised american and yeah not great, but at least we share a language! US American society is largely rooted in the same foundations as UK society, largely we have the same flaws! But oh my god. What about the rest of the world.
It's global. This impact continues to be seen, steamrollering ahead, in places that had completely different starting points. UK culture isn't that dissimilar to that of the US, so we aren't losing nearly as much as cultures that had something completely different. So much is being lost.
Languages and dialects and everything else is just being wallpapered over so we all meet the same ideal of the 'American life' and it's not even real! It's just a product based on how ppl were actually living in the US, manipulated until it's the most marketable mould. You guys are victims of it as well but like. It's based on your culture so you don't lose as much if you conform to it. Just like how in the UK, if we conform, we lose more than US, but nowhere near as much as countries that had languages, dialects and cultures that were so so different to UK/US culture. The less like the US, your starting point, the more there is to lose.
And look. I said it to start with. I'm not having a go. That's not what this is. But you guys really need to be aware, you need to make an effort to understand the impact that this plastic Hollywood american culture is having on the rest of the world. You need to actively look for it, and make an effort to not pay in to it. Because when Americans see other cultures represented in media and say its not relatable, when you guys go on holiday and make no effort to learn local customs, and try and pay in dollars and spend your time abroad like you're still in America, when you see cultural differences and immediately argue that the American way is better and of course everyone should have giant cars and never dry laundry outdoors and live in American style homes, without any kind of critical thought. Just 'this is how we do it so why wouldn't everyone else do it this way. This is the only way. The American way is obviously best.' When you guys do that you are individually feeding in to this absolute bulldozing of cultures (including American ones!) to allow for better marketability.
It isn't any one individual American citizens fault that things are the way they are, and you guys are victims of the same system, but you need to have some self awareness when it comes to the fact that as individuals you are unknowingly, helping driving this forwards and as individuals, there are things you can do to limit your personal impact (and no arguing that you have no culture is not it!!! Being all self deprecating doesn't do shit. Take some responsibility and accept that individual Americans didn't create this system, but currently, individual Americans really are doing their bit to keep promoting it, to keep pushing it on the rest of the world.
And I've already rambled for an age so I'll stop here but I just want to make clear as an ending note here, that this really isn't about piling on Americans and being all 'boo it's all America's fault. They should apologise. Their culture isn't worth anything.' Not at all this is the opposite of that. The fact that millions of Americans have been convinced you have no culture, all while a mimicry of American culture is plastered on to the rest of the world, and while you as individuals are encouraged to help that happen, often without even realising what you're doing; is a crime. You've been wronged, as have we all.
And America is not the problem. The problem is imperialism and it didn't start with you guys. It started in Europe, and Europeans, particularly British ppl, have a responsibility to push back and be self aware, take some fucking responsibility and not inadvertently keep feeding in to that system, just as you guys do. The US didn't start the fire, imperialist capitalism is a fire that started burning long before the United States was even considered, but its on all of us, to do what we can to not feed that fire. And right now? You guys are the face of it.
This idea of what America is, is the face of imperialistic capitalism, and that means that even if you don't mean to, you guys are feeding that fire more so than the rest of us. You're responsible for spreading it, more so than the rest of us. And if you don't step up and take responsibility, accept that you're gonna get it wrong sometimes and you need to try to do better; if we don't all do that. There will be nothing left. They'll paper over it all, the lives of real Americans just as much as those in Scotland and India and the Netherlands, and 100 other cultures, that are at risk, thanks to this fire, that's currently, largely coming from America.
So yeah. It's absolutely not just on you guys and ppl who act like there's no racism or wealth divide in Europe or anywhere else for that matter are complete idiots, however, this Americanisation of the world (and I hesitate to call it that. Because its not a representation of real American lives. Its simply wearing an American face.) Its real. It's happening.
And we don't tell you about it to make you feel guilty (those of us who aren't dicks at least) ,we are telling you. We are kicking up a fuss. Because it isn't fair. It's not right and while individual Americans ignore that and refuse to take responsibility where they can (small apples. We aren't asking for you to call a violent revolution in our names. Just take some time to learn about the rest of the world. Stop assuming America is always right and examine your biases. When you find them. Stop personally pushing them.) , while that is happening, as individuals, you are contributing to this. It's not even altruism. This system is hurting Americans too. It's hurting us all. All we ask is that you do what you can to not personally contribute, and keep an open mind, be aware. That's all any of us can do.
when a british actor does an american accent everyone’s like “i didn’t even know they were british until they were on colbert.” but when americans do a british accent everyone’s like “they’re supposed to be from east cocksford but their glottal e’s are north dicksford. shameful.”
#so yeah sorry to rant but honestly#I'm so tired of ppl refusing to take responsibility on every side of this#imperalistic cruel capitalist regimes going 'well hey. at least we aren't America. this is their fault.'#meanwhile. Americans contribute to the bulldozing of their own cultures to make room for a capitalist monster wearing them as a mask#and if you call out any Americans or make them aware of something they are doing individually that isn't helping. it's either#refusing to see/ accept their own bias. or just as bad! yes! just as bad!!! america is beyond help. there's nothing worth saving#nothing we can do. that's bullshit and making stupid excuses like 'oh our schools don't teach us to respect other cultures'#'we don't know how.' fucking learn! try! that's all anyone asks of you. nobody cares about your schooling. school is shit for working class#ppl in most countries!#you think the english curriculum is any more balanced? we're subjects of a colonial empire. it's propaganda and its not even competent!#i don't think the average American understands how many more hours of schooling they get vs a lot of places. I'm not saying it's right#but teaching time? you guys have longer school days and you stay in school till youre older. our national curriculum ends the year we turn#16 in the UK. year 11 finishes in June. you can leave school 2 months shy of 16 to get a supermarket job. (and many working class ppl do)#and our government still pat themselves on the back and say its eqv. to high school finishing at 18 in other countries. like for context.#i haven't had a geography lesson since i was 13. my last english lesson? i was 15. that's completely normal here. so yeah. the#'our schooling was shit so we can't use Google to learn a bit of geography' falls pretty fucking flat. sorry.#they should have done better by you but they didn't. join the queue. do what you can and take some fucking responsibility now#the only way out of this is for us all. American and otherwise. to do what we can. be self aware. try to be better. keep learning#because if you fall to apathy? capitalism wins. if you believe the propaganda? capitalism wins. if capitalism wins we all lose#the system is designed to wear you down so you're too tired to remember that it doesn't have to be this way.#that's been happening for decades and it's why things are such a mess now. the only way out. is remember there is a way out#climb towards it. do what you can. it seems like low hanging fruit. it doesn't look like enough to change anything.#but there are more ppl being hurt by this system than those benefiting. 99% of us. if everyone picks an apple. that's a lot!#that's a fucking lot! keep going even when it seems like you aren't making progress. make your voice heard. vote. don't passively support a#system that's on its way to destroying you. destroying us all. do what you've got to do to live. but don't forget that all the things that#seem like they don't matter? really really do matter once you add up everyone's contributions. you can't control other ppls actions only#your own. but your contribution matters. your vote matters. your voice matters. join the union. educate yourself. stay curious. question.#the informations out there go online learning 1 thing. challenging 1 bias is better than all or nothing. i dont have time to learn anything#small apples. low hanging fruit. the oceans made up of billions of drops. the longer you don't try. the longer you've no chance of success#we can do better. we can absolutely all do better.
