Hi! Today, I’m sharing a list of mods that I consider essential for playing historical gameplay in The Sims.

I often have friends who want to dive into the Decades Challenge but aren’t sure which mods to use or where to start. So, in this post, I’m going to share the mods I personally use and think are indispensable for creating that authentic historical experience.

Deaderpool's MC Command Center: This mod allows you to manage and modify many aspects of your game, including handling pregnancies, university careers, and enabling teen relationships so your Sims can marry earlier, among other features. You can also enable autosave and adjust the length of a Sim day.

Lumpinou's RPO: This mod enhances relationship dynamics and expands pregnancy features. It's extensive, with many modules, and once you've tried it, you won't want to play without it.

Pandasama's Realistic Childbirth: Offers multiple realistic childbirth options, including natural bed births and spontaneous labour, adding depth to your Sims' family lives.

MizoreYukii's Arranged Marriages: Allows you to arrange marriages for convenience. Parents can agree on marriages for their children, but breaking the arrangement won’t be easy.

Necrodog's Carriages and Horses: Adds functional carriages, enhancing immersion. While it doesn't work with the horses of Horse Ranch pack, it’s still incredibly useful.

Kuttoe's Enlist in War: It will allow your Sims to enlist in the war. Whether they live or die will be random, but if they survive, they'll receive the Veteran trait, a lifetime pension and some lasting traumas.

JaneSimsten's Regency Romance: Perfect for simulating the Regency era. It adds class differences, property ownership, etiquette skills, new traits and careers, events, and widowhood. Though inspired by the Regency era, it works well for later decades too.

SimKatu's Reading Animation Override: Changes the reading animations, with different ones for men and women, making your Sims’ reading time more immersive.

Zero's Deadly Dickensian Sicknesses: Introduces the risk of diseases like Tuberculosis, Typhoid Fever, and Cholera. It’s incredibly realistic with its contagion system.

Adeepindigo's Healthcare Redux: A comprehensive health mod that adds various illnesses and treatments, including tuberculosis and (early access) cancer. While Sims can buy modern medicines, many illnesses can be cured with natural remedies.

Adeepindigo's Simulated Endings: This mod will enhance everything related to your Sims' deaths, allowing them to take out life insurance and designate beneficiaries, arrange funeral preparations, and introduce stages of grief for your Sims.

MizoreYukii's Functional Broom: Adds a functional broom with its own animation, letting you keep your Sims’ homes clean without resorting to modern vacuums.

Triplis's Quit or Join School: In case you need your teens or childs to quit school.

The Kalino's Farm Animal Set: Expands your farm with more animals, including goats, sheep, ducks and more, in addition to the standard cows and chickens.

JaneSimsten's Write With Quills: Replaces your Sims' pens with quills, adding a touch of historical accuracy.

JaneSimsten's Sidesaddle Override: Allows female Sims to ride horses sidesaddle, as they would have in the past.

JaneSimsten's Parchment Computer: Replaces modern computers with parchment and quills, complete with their own animations—perfect for pre-typewriter eras.

Frankk's Language Barriers: More realism to sims being from different worlds.

Rs4ella's 1920s Grade School Homework Override: Changes the look of the kids' homework book to a 1920s style, but it works well for earlier periods too.

Xbrilliantsims's Toddler Bathtime Overrides: Replaces modern bath toys and sponges with more era-appropriate items when bathing toddlers.

Lunamoth's Historical Infant Carriers: Swaps out modern baby carriers for fabric slings, suitable for any historical era.

Lunamoth's Rope Pet Leash: Replaces the modern pet leash with a simple rope, making it look more appropriate for historical gameplay.

300yearschallenge's Historical Baby Bath Override: Changes the baby bath seat to a more suitable design, or you can opt for

Sassymissollie's Invisible Infant Bath Seat to remove it entirely.

JaneSimsten's 5 Day Work Week: Choose Your Own Work Hours: Lets you adjust your Sims' work schedules for a more realistic experience.

JaneSimsten's Marksmanship Skill: Adds a marksmanship skill, allowing your Sims to practise shooting and hunting, with the hunted animals available for cooking.

Littlbowbub's Ye Olde Cookbook: Enables your Sims to cook historical dishes, perfect for low-income Sims in older settings.

Basemental's Basemental Drugs: Although mainly known for adding drugs, it’s commonly used for its smoking features, letting your Sims smoke cigarettes and cigars like a proper Victorian gentleman.

MizoreYukii's Children/Toddlers Can Die of Anything: Allows your child Sims to die, useful if your storyline requires it.

Ayoshi's Phone to Notebook Replacement Mod: If phone elimination mods are causing issues, this mod might help. It replaces the mobile phone with a small notebook, which could pass for a mini Bible or an old-fashioned notebook.

JaneSimsten's Extra Cross-Stitch Patterns: Adds historically accurate cross-stitch patterns.

There was one moment on the road that Antoine always dreaded. It occasionally landed somewhere between the music and the ever growing serving of whiskey that helped him to sleep at night. Josephine referred to it as “networking.”

From the moment they stepped foot in any saloon, she started the process. Talking easily with patrons or sipping her own whiskey slowly, spending nearly every moment he played eying the crowd looking for anyone worth her time. Most nights, she deemed that none of them were, and so with a tip of her cigarette Antoine knew to pack up his guitar case and make their way out of the bar. But on other nights, the nights she explained would one day be their lucky break, she would nod at him knowingly, signaling that his case was to stay in its place. Then it was time for him to smile for the circus.

Locals with money. Competing bar owners. Small-time politicians. She could spot who would be useful to her while the rest of the patrons laughed and mingled amongst themselves to the constant stream of music he played. This is how you make it, mon frère. This is how you get on a real stage. One day will be the day.

Yet for every fake smile and insincere handshake he exchanged, it was harder to remember what kept him on the road at all. A real stage. Surely that was it, wasn’t it? The reason why he left his family and felt his life draining away from him one mile at a time.

A real stage.

Through the deafening sound of his own music still ringing in his ears, Antoine could hear Jo saying something to him in a lacquered voice. The words didn’t matter. He could tell from her plastic smile what she really meant. Speak. Speak for the circus. “George here was asking about our days in New Orleans. Said it was a waste not to advertise such a past on your billing.”

Antoine nodded on cue, repeating an anecdote about playing with Louis Armstrong that every white man, woman, and child out here seemed to love. Following his own script, the man slapped his knee and laughed in turn. Jo took the moment his eyes were closed to look back at Antoine approvingly. The perfect smile. The perfect smile for the circus.

Only there was something in her demeanor that made Antoine uneasy. Every movement she made was calculated and dangerously observant. In the milliseconds the man’s eyes were closed, she watched him with the focus of a cat. Only the moment before he snapped them open, the perfect smile returned to her face. It reminded Antoine of someone he couldn’t quite name, and yet the man never seemed to notice at all.

“George here was telling me all about his dance halls while you played.” Even though she was turned in the other direction, Antoine could tell that the words were meant for him. “Seems he has thoughts about their superiority to our friend Hosa’s establishments.”

“Well now missy I’m not trying to step on my dear Mr. Grove’s toes.” He had said the words jovially, undercutting what Antoine could only imagine was a longer and more storied relationship than he had the patience for. “I simply think a dance hall would suit you better is all. These saloons, they’re old fashioned. You oughta have a crowd packed into the place just for you, not servin’ as some backing track to an old drunkard's night.”

Antoine could see his sister’s light arched eyebrow and upturned lip on the left side of her face; she was sure not to let it reach the right. “Well I happen to agree with you. Trouble is we’ve got a contract and a tight schedule at that.”

George’s hands went up, following the song and dance of feigned civility that governed the newly gentile businesses of the West. “Well now no part of me is looking to impede on that agreement you have with Mr. Grove. I can tell you’re a smart girl. No chance you’d be talking to me with any sort of non-compete. Besides, I’m just offerin’ you stay here an extra week. Maybe two. Add some shows. Get yourself in front of a real crowd for once.”

Jo smiled at George and nodded her head delicately, and he understood the gesture without a word. He turned back toward the stage with his whiskey in hand, pretending to give them an iota of privacy while he could actually hear every word they exchanged.

Jo looked over her shoulder and smiled again, before turning back to Antoine and lowering her voice to an accented French. The unexpected lilt of a foreign accent in a desert saloon only made the man's fake joviality and thin impatience all the more evident. 

“Une vraie scène." Her voice wavered slightly and Antoine realized that for the first time all night, the look in his sister's eyes was genuine. “C'est notre chance. Nous serions fous de dire non.”

Antoine knew that she was right - that every other offer she'd leveraged or connection they'd made paled next to this one. But part of him still wanted to say no, to just admit that, God, he wanted to go home. To yell that he had done this to safeguard their lives. To remind her that they had done it. They were secure. He was heard. She was successful. What more were they chasing?

But simmering under all of those questions was one that he knew would follow him to his grave - what if this was it? What if he passed it up and never knew what happened next? What if Jo found some other act to represent and she went on the road alone with men like the one who was tapping his finger impatiently on his whiskey glass?

“D'accord. Mais une semaine. Pas deux. Je veux être à la maison pour l'anniversaire de Violette. Pas de négociation.”

Jo turned back to George and he twisted in his chair. She let a pause hang in the air as he looked at her eagerly. Then she smiled at him again, this time benevolently. “Well as I’m sure you can imagine it puts us in a bit of a pinch. This contract alone already keeps us on the road for months on end. And if he’s going to play without a guarantee of continued work and in addition to the schedule we’ve already set, we’ll need double what we're paid now.”

She stopped, purposefully running her finger along the rim of her glass to let him watch her hand move. “And come on. I know you came here for a reason - just to see him play and find out if he was really as good as your scouts told you he was."

The man chuckled, and Jo smiled in the same way that had unnerved Antoine earlier. Only this time, she let the man watching her see it too. “Plus, I know that Hosa has been pulling significant portions of your clients anytime he has Antoine on stage. He's costing you money. You pay us double and you’re only putting that money right back in your pocket. Otherwise Hosa hears you've been trying to poach his talent and writes in a non-compete. Then good luck finding an act all over again.”

George tried to keep her gaze locked in his but she didn't flinch. Meanwhile his eyes flickered back and forth to Antoine over her shoulder. “Fine, missy. You drive a hard bargain, you know that? Sir, anyone ever tell you your girl here drives a hard bargain?”

Jo laughed triumphantly at his acquiescence, sure to keep the sound just girlish enough so that he didn’t feel threatened. Then she picked up the whiskey that she hadn't touched since he had sat at her table.

Smile for the circus, mon frère. Play the game. We've always done what we have to do. As Antoine picked up his own drink her words rattled around his head like a high pitched drone. He swallowed back a mouthful with the knowledge that he wanted to pummel his fist into the man's gold plated smile. But there his sister was laughing with him, pretending like he hadn't just called her missy, or like he wasn't looking at the hem of her dress whenever he thought she wasn't looking. Antoine finished his drink in one quick swallow, his stomach starting to churn just as the burn tore through his throat.

The dawn of a new century shepherded in a liberated shift in women's hair fashions. The Titus Cut or coiffure á la Titus was a short, unisex hairstyle that boomed in popularity in the first ten years of the 1800s. Coinciding with the turn toward classicism in fashion, the simple style of the Titus was an outward demonstration that the wearer was shunning aristocratic excess. The Journal de Paris reported in 1802 that "more than half of elegant women were wearing their hair or wig à la Titus." CC links and reference images under the cut.

Vladislav Chekov and Yuliana Fedorova were wed early one summer morning in 1890. Officiated by Priest Aleksiy Kordochkin, the ceremony was small and attended only by the couple's immediate family.

As they had agreed, the twins moved their things into the bigger room that had previously belonged to Louis. Niall took them out to his favourite shops, so they could choose some new furniture to fill the space as well.

The most important purchase definitely turned out to be a lavishly decorated divider that the girls put up right in the middle of their room. That way, it was almost as though they had their own rooms after all.

Of course, each of their personalities could thrived much more in their own designated spaces. Dorothy had insisted on a vanity, where she could store her makeup and jewellery and fix her face in the morning. Ruby, on the other hand, wanted a comfy chair to read in, as well as some new books, now that she had more alone time to dedicate to her favourite pastime.

All in all, if anything, this new arrangement was a good influence on the relationship between the sisters. At least this way they would not clash with each other as often, and they could choose more freely when to spend time together.

Meanwhile, Louis moved his things to the twins' old room. He did not need to buy anything new, though, especially because he was only there on some weekends and special occasions. Emma was a little down about the girls leaving behind the elaborate murals she had painted for them, but they were at the age now that they did not care much about it anymore. Louis, on the other hand, actually quite enjoyed them, as they reminded him of the fantastical worlds from his favourite ballets.

Hello friends, long time no see! I'm about to move to Ireland within three weeks and to say I've been busy would be quite an understatement. However, I can always find myself some time to play The Sims 4 (especially when a new EP comes out) and I just HAD to try this new Businesses & Hobbies one, how are you guys enjoying it so far?

I created this beautiful mess of a woman named Barbara Salomon who smokes like a chimney and I'm absolutely OBSESSED with how stunning she looks:

Anyway, I decided she was gonna be a hairdresser and created a 1950s inspired hair salon & laundromant (because hey, why shouldn't those two mingle? lol) for her to thrive as a businesswoman. And so today, I bring you this charming little lot I've spent way too much time on for you to enjoy as well! Here are some screenshots:

Before you go ahead and download it into your game, a few IMPORTANT disclaimers:

The lot is a 20x15. I built it on the Old Torget House lot from the new world of Nordhaven.

I used items from several expansions and packs (sorry I couldn't list them below, I played offline while building it and taking the screenshots), so if you don't own them those items might be replaced with others.

This lot is set as Residential.

Like all my builds, this is a heavily CC based lot. If you don't have a powerful PC, it might get laggy while trying to play with it.

Regarding the CC, I do not own nor take credit from any item included within this lot. All credit goes to their amazing creators.

The .ZIP file (2.21 GB) includes two folders: one for the Tray Files and another one with all the CC. I'm 100% sure all the CC I used is already public for everyone; if it's not, it's been definitely longer than three weeks since it has all been in my game and you (the CC creator) shouldn't be putting content behind permanent paywalls to begin with ;)

I did use bb.moveobjects on while building and have playtested it, so it should be fully functional. Let me know if otherwise.

In The Family Way - A Medieval Pregnancy Kit For Pandasama's Realistic Childbirth Mod

I love a good historical gameplay, and I love Pandasama's Realistic Childbirth Mod. However, for obvious reasons that mod is heavily Modern Era™-coded. But I felt as though there were elements to the mod that could be adapted to my favorite kind of gameplay. This little kit is the result of that feeling. Find the items easily by searching for either [scandisim] or Pandasama in Build/Buy. Please keep in mind before reading any further that none of these work without the original mod by Pandasama, will not even show up in game without the original mod, and all credit for the mod and original items goes to them!

1850s english manor - historically accurate

Hi! Here's the build I've been working on for the past two weeks. I've made plenty of homes for working-class and somewhat well-off folks, but I hadn't shared a mansion yet, so I was really excited to get this one done. It took me a lot of effort, and I had to cut back on the CC usage and simplify the interiors so Tray Importer wouldn’t crash when exporting the CC.

Anyway! This grand house features a beautiful garden, an entrance hall worthy of a mansion, and a library-living room that leads to the drawing room and dining room.

There are two full floors of bedrooms and bathrooms. The master bedroom is on the top floor and is split into two with a small hallway in between, so the lords of the house can sleep in their respective beds as tradition demands.

There’s also a nursery and a room for toddlers. The mansion boasts a large greenhouse and a full floor dedicated to the staff, where you'll find the kitchens and the servants’ quarters.

Violette usually hated silence. She went out of her way to avoid it - staying in rooms where there was a radio, reading aloud rather than to herself, talking to other girls even when she didn’t really want to. The world was simply better when it was filled with noise. That way she knew it was alive, and she wasn’t alone. 

The only exception was here - in the horse stables. Accompanied by the warm breathing of Ozma and Silver, both of whom seemed to need each other's company as much as she needed theirs. Her mother only let her spend this much time with them once dinner was through and her chores were complete. She had a million tiny rules like that. Don’t run after the chickens. Don’t take Ozma out alone. Don’t take the long walk home from school. Every day it seemed like there was a new rule. But not here. Not with Ozma and Silver. 

Except now it was almost sunset, and she knew that once the last ray of light disappeared beyond the dying corn she would have to scurry back inside to a world of loneliness and rules.

Just beyond the barn door the sun began to creep past the roof of the farmhouse. Violette brought her forehead to Ozma's rather than watch it sink any further. "We don’t need anyone except each other do we, Ozma?”

A soft snort came from the corner in reply. Violette laughed quietly, looking over her shoulder at her father's horse. “Except for you Silver. Of course we need you.”

No. There were no rules here. No heavy sadness in the air like there was inside, or the constant count in her mind that she had almost totally succeeded in channeling into the perfect pirouette. No. There was no need to fill her mother’s quiet world with noise of her own making. Only her and Ozma and Silver and…

In perfect unison, Ozma and Silver’s ears stood at attention, listening to the crunch of gravel growing closer from beyond the darkened walls of the barn. It came closer and closer, growing louder through the placid afternoon air. Violette went perfectly still, her own ears imperceptibly perked alongside theirs as she listened carefully and went over the count again. Five, six, seven, eight...

It was over a week past when she had expected to hear that sound, and so her ears had been even more at attention than usual. But she was learning that she could fool herself with hope, and so she was beginning to grow just as cautious as the horses she preferred to spend her time with.

Only the sound slowly came to a stop and then went quiet. A moment later she heard a clear, metallic clink that she knew by heart, following by the ringing of a metal door slamming shut.

Hurried footsteps rang out across the farmyard. They skidded to a stop just as a suitcase hit the sand. “Poppa!”

His response was muffled, spoken onto the top of her head as he pulled her close to his chest. “Happy Birthday, ma petite chérie.”

“It isn’t until Saturday, Poppa. I still have to go to school tomorrow.” Even though her voice was tinged with innocent happiness, the final words had been spoken with a note of impatience. If her eyes hadn’t been closed and a smile spread across her face she would have punctuated the statement with a characteristically adolescent eye roll.

Antoine laughed lightly as he pulled away to look at her. Every time he came home it felt like he had to crane his neck downward a little less. It was hard for him to think that he had missed even a single centimeter she had grown in his absence. “It will fly by, Princess. Especially since I have a surprise for you. Can you guess where we’re going to celebrate?”

She shook her head no and rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet impatiently. “The circus!”

A small, delighted gasp verified that his birthday surprise was more than satisfactory. “The circus?”

“That’s right. We saw the advertisements for it last week. It will be two town’s over, but your Aunt Jo is gunna drive us all out for the evening...”

His words were cut short by the sound of a creak on the front porch. He turned over his shoulder to where Zelda had quietly emerged from the farmhouse. With the sun shining on her back, she brought her hand to her face and smiled. But knowing how much Violette had waited for this moment, she fought to keep her feet firmly in place so as not to interrupt them.

Only to Violette, it seemed like her presence had once again made the world grow quiet. Even worse, she could already feel her father leave again, even though his hands stayed squarely on her shoulders.

Before he turned to leave, Antoine patted her lovingly on the head, reminding her that he would see her tomorrow before school to help with the horses. Then, as her heart sank as low as the desert sun, he picked up his suitcase and walked away.

“Wait!”

When he turned suddenly she felt guilty, like she could sense that his exuberance before had just been a mask for his exhaustion. “Can - can we go out riding? Momma said I can only take Ozma out when you’re home and the sun is still up…”

“We can go after school tomorrow, alright?” He had spoken with a note of joviality, letting her know that he had heard the impatient sarcasm in her voice before. But behind it, no matter how much he was trying to hide it, she realized that her senses had been right. He seemed thin, like his energy and time were more of a precious commodity than ever before.

So she nodded her head sadly, watching him walk away and onto the porch where her mother was waiting. As he looped his arm around her they went inside and he never looked back.

Then, just as quickly as he had arrived, it was quiet again, and the sun in the sky finally disappeared beyond the horizon.

The nineteenth century opened with a fashion landscape that was changing dramatically and rapidly from the styles of a generation earlier. Gone were the overly fussy coifs of the 1700s and in their place came a soft simplicity inspired by the classical antiquity of the Greeks and Romans. Styles were loose and romantic, often with soft curls and tendrils framing the face. CC links and reference images under the cut.

Details:

Ada Sweater Combo - A knitted sweater combined with a cinch belt and full tartan/plaid skirt. Rita Skirt Suit - A wool cropped coat and pencil dress combo with contrast collar and buttons that's perfect for looking smart, but staying warm.

Mavis Dress - A button-down dress in various shades and patterns

Mavis Dress V2 - Same old Mavis, brand new picnic blanket pattern (as someone calls it...they know who)!

Dee Sweater - Knitted roll-neck sweater that's perfect for those colder days

A Historical recolor of Soloriya's newspaper prop! This prop has been very handy for many pose creators so I wanted to add swatches for DecadesSimmers.
