Friend groupchat has been doing TOH finale analysis all afternoon and @thesixthstar made the comment "Luz is the Collector's Azura" and I am going to be rotating that one in my mind for. A long time. Forever maybe.
#the way the collector was used to really dig into/emphasize some of the most important parts of both luz and king's arcs#simultaneously but also uniquely#and didn't as specifically dig into eda's but still did a little because it emphasized her connection to the latter two so well#like the fact that they all walked through their relationship as a story and can share that story with someone else now#very very interesting use of a pretty out-there character concept; i was not sold on them at the end of s2 but like i get it now#(they also made for such an interesting contrast to belos -- someone who caused harm on accident instead of on purpose)#(and thus helped with fleshing out that theme of like. what really is morality/accountability for causing harm)#(which MAN i have a lot of feelings about the episode digging into that with luz given my own brain lately)#the finale was just. such an episode#anyways this post is mostly me doing the will smith hands at sharon's point because she is SO right#toh spoilers#f: us weirdos have to stick together

actually i loveeee overthinking random side characters and i think this time it should be scolippi and how much i think back on his character and how greatly he affected mista. i love their fight and how truly agonizing it is to see him go through it- how scolippi is the only enemy mista shows any kind of desperation to because of a stand he can’t defeat … he has a certain pain in his voice that we haven’t really heard elsewhere.
and i love scolippi, how his own devotion to his stand grants him his own stigmata … how, just like jesus had predicted fate 3 separate times- he predicted the deaths of bruno, abbacchio, and narancia … him being able to bring out such desperation out of mista, and him still showing compassion despite being beaten. i don’t see people often talk about him, but i do think he is an often overlooked pivotal aspect of part 5 in ways other side characters haven’t quite done.
#█ ▌ 𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩. / ooc.#religion //#( i love mista but i was gritting my teeth watching him beat up scolippi )#( but i understand . he was on the verge of tears at the thought of losing bruno )#( anyways more biblical allegories in jojo again yyyaaaayyy ☺️ )#( i fear i eat it up constantly . my useless knowledge finally has reason )#( but his allegories are quite obvious though that doesn’t mean i won’t still talk about them )#( and i see a lot of talk about how out of place the episode feels … but actually i love it )#( i think it’s a great episode. and i love seeing mista become insanely emotional )#( but scolippi was mistas test in a way. to show whether or not mista will let the pieces fall where they may or try to deceive fate )#( and mista was fully willing to die to try and change fate … he did not pass his test and thus sealing the rest of the gangs fate …. )#( it’s a great episode i think about it so often )

Nope, sorry everyone, I like my 8 hour movies and my ADHD brain does not do well with weekly episodes. Team binge for life.
"binge-worthy show" man fuck that
i want my shows one episode followed by a whole ass week of going a little insane over it with the people on my phone, writing fics theorizing and going over every single scene through amazing gifs and meta, before the next ep drops and the cicle begins anew
#I do agree with the show production point but that’s not an issue with binging that’s an issue with production/streaming companies#people still used to not watch as episodes were released and thus not contribute to the numbers or not watch to the end of the season as#released and then shows wouldn’t get the final ep ratings they needed. it’s about greedy impatient companies not how you deliver the product#also there were always people who hadn’t seen the latest ep so you couldn’t discuss the show the next day at work. this is still the case

There are a few later-seasons trgb eps I wish had been made when the show was still good, but "spacebusters" has gotta be one of my top picks. I know there already was a space-themed episode in season two but I honestly think this one has a more compelling plot and it could have fucked so hard if a) the animation was done in the first few seasons' style so it could have a more legit creepy atmosphere; b) the writing was a little more competent in places; and c) we didn't have to have slimer around constantly killing the tension with his interjections. That said, I don't think even the better era of the show would have given me what I really want, which is to spend more time on the fucked up survival horror scenario winston was in for however long it was before the others got there
#like imagine. you're so excited to go on this trip and fulfill a lifelong dream (...never mind the previous time you went to space)#but then people start vanishing right out of their spacesuits#something is hunting you down one by one and you're trapped on this space station without any real way to defend yourself#and the people you normally rely on as partners aren't there. then finally it's just you alone on the station#only surviving thus far thanks to a piece of technology you have but that mysterious thing is still on the prowl and hungry#and when your partners do show up they don't immediately believe it's really you!!#like that's some horror stuff right there dude. it's fucked up. i want to explore that in detail#wish more of it could have been shown rather than just told about. y'know?#and like i say even the early seasons probably wouldn't have delivered on quite such a thing#BUT if it was a better episode it might have inspired fanworks that would properly delve into the space horror potential of it all#who's to say

like i see rex and wolffe and go yay! because i know they are still alive in 10+ years. but there is not one hide nor hair of that man my best friend in the future and it does scare me
#if he shows up just to have an emotional conversation with one person and then die in a passion i will also be upset to be fair#but the implications of rex thinking obi-wan's dead thus leaving empty the world in my head where cody goes and finds him do scare me#as well#sorry the thing is that this show is not technically about him but the fact that he was in one episode has ruined me until the series finale

I was talking to my coworker today about my deep belief that more media should be finite. Some of the most disappointing endings in TV happen because there wasn’t an end goal that the plot was working toward all along. Ironically this came up because I was lamenting Arcane only being two seasons, a decision I admire, respect, and mourn.
I was juxtaposing How I Met Your Mother with The Office. The whole conceit of HIMYM is that the story is supposed to be leading toward this woman who haunts the narrative with her absence but because they set out with no end goal the finale is ultimately so unsatisfying. Nine seasons of build up for someone who could never have lived up to the hype because she wasn’t chosen beforehand or included early on.
Contrasted the The Office which was nine seasons that only ever claimed to be about the daily lives of office workers. Things get a bit looney tunes at times but ultimately the finale feels correct because there wasn’t some stated goal they’d been working toward narratively all along.
I then stated that the best and most elegant storytelling for TV was on The Good Place, in which every episode furthered the understanding of moral philosophy, advanced the plot, and was funny. It set out with a clear story and wrapped up exactly where it intended in one of the most satisfying conclusions ever that makes me cry every time.
My coworker then said, “What’s The Good Place?”
I froze. I frantically ran back everything I’d said thus far for spoilers and concluded that I had not ruined the plot. “You haven’t seen it?”
“No, it’s pretty good?”
“It’s. Really good.”
He mused about watching it with his partner or alone. I know he doesn’t like to rewatch media but I still suggested, “Watch it alone first, and then rewatch it with her. Trust me. The twist at the end of the first season will recontextualize everything and you’ll get to watch her reaction.”
I hope I get to hear him talk about it when I work with him next. I’m excited.

Ok here's an updated timeline of the Rat Grinders based on the new info we got this episode:
Freshman Year
On the first day of classes Kipperlily and the others meet and form their adventuring party. Kipperlily comes up with the name the High Five Heroes.
Kipperlily excels academically, but the High Five Heroes only go on easier adventures, presumably to ensure they will succeed rather than fail at something challenging.
Ruben is primarily an acoustic/soft rock musician.
Kipperlily begins to have childish rage and resentment towards Riz and the other Bad Kids, which start out petty but gradually grow in intensity over the next couple years.
Sophomore Year
An increase in hostility, one of the first meetings Kipperlily has this year is being jealous that Riz's dad was killed by Kalvaxus, that if a person has suffered immense magical hardship it is an unfair advantage in adventuring.
Kipperlily tries to find evidence of conspiracy with her parents and is enraged that they are boring.
A week after spring break the High Five Heroes go on their first quest to the mountains of chaos, chaperoned by Jace Stardiamond.
After this, the High Five Heroes seem to undergo a shift where their rage is amplified. Kipperlily's counselor files become much more venomous towards the Bad Kids, Ruben shifts to emo music, etc.
At some point after this Ivy and Oisin propose changing the name to the Rat Grinders. Kipperlily opposes this and Lucy is on her side, but Ruben votes against her because it makes her upset and Mary Ann also votes against her but doesn't explain her reasoning.
A piece of paperwork is submitted for Lucy to change her god, but another piece of paperwork is filed afterwards rescinding that application, presumably by Lucy herself changing her mind.
Towards the end of the year, after grades are finalized but before classes are over thus avoiding the pass/fail penalty, Lucy dies in the far haven woods near Aguefort. Presumably, she could have been resurrected in service of this unnamed rage god, but chose not to. She "stuck to her guns".
Kipperlily's rage towards the Bad Kids has transitioned from childish to venomous, she "hates them".
Junior Year
At some point between the end of Sophomore year and the beginning of Junior year, the Rat Grinders specifically request Buddy Dawn join their party as a cleric.
At 8:01 am, the first day of classes, Kipperlily goes to Ashgrove to dig up the rogue teacher's grave, thus forcing her to reveal herself and granting Kipperlily a pass for all her rogue classes for the year. Presumably she was aware of the rogue teacher's grave beforehand (information only available in Arthur Aguefort's office) but waited until the start of Junior year so she could pass all her classes for the year.
Kipperlily announces her bid to run for student council president, with a platform based on equity, equanimity, and fairness.
Kipperlily asks Jawbone about the creation of Yes! and the events of prompocalypse
Her counselor notes become extremely enraged, with her straight up wanting to kill Kristin and being angry that she can't get to her thanks to Fig's protection.
Oisin, Ivy, and Buddy are seen at Fabian's house party during the first week of classes. Kipperlily is not seen but is possibly there invisible. The Bad Kids are asked to do drugs but decline. That same night, mephits steal part of a cloud rider engine kept in Seacaster Manor.
At the school assembly the following day Principal Grix reveals he was notified of students doing drugs off campus, meaning its possible the Rat Grinders tipped him off in an attempt to get the Bad Kids in trouble.
Ruben performs presumably some kind of ritual at the Frosty Fair Folk festival, with the other Rat Grinders conspicuously absent. Simultaneously, Yolanda Badgood falls dead in the same place where Lucy Frostblade died, after Yolanda had been made aware of Lucy's change in god and was investigating it. Yolanda also refuses to be resurrected in service of the rage god.
The Rat Grinders are seen at the assembly addressing Yolanda's death and how all clerics would be moved to pass/fail. Most look bored, Mary Ann isn't paying attention, and Buddy is unconcerned.
Kipperlily and Oisin get caught trying to sabotage the Bad Kids' Last Stand exam, and Kipperlily kills Buddy. Ten minutes after the Bad Kids plane shift away, Buddy is revived by an unknown figure and he pledges his allegiance to the rage god.
Now the Rat Grinders are scheduled for another trip to the Mountains of Chaos and are on complete lockdown, hiding all of them from Adaine's divination magic.

It just occurred to me that if the back half of Dungeon Meshi sticks to the pacing of the comic as closely as it has thus far, like 50% of the episodes in the final cour are going to be devoted to covering a sequence of events that takes place over a span of in-universe time about as long as the episodes themselves, and I'd be fascinated to see how the show handles that.

"When you lose everything, you're finally free." is an absolutely perfect line, because it's nonsense with everything else Qimir tries to lure Osha with in this episode. He plays on how she feels like she loves people too much, like oh she loves people and that makes her a bad Jedi (never mind that Jedi have always said that loving people is a good thing), she loves people who will never love her back, implying that if she became a Sith she could love people all she wants, she could be with people who love her back the way she wants them to love her back. But then follows it up with losing everything is freedom, which means having no connections to anyone is freedom to him, having no one to care about is freedom to him, having no one to love is freedom to him, and, yeah, that's the Sith philosophy right there. You say that you'll be able to love people, except you hurt all those you love because that's what the dark side does. You live on fear and anger and hate, you try to clutch onto them so tightly that you break them and yourself, you lose them because you refuse to ever let go, that's the message of Star Wars, that you need to be able to let go when the moment comes, you can't own someone, you can't live and die based on that love consuming you. The Sith philosophy is saying, come to the dark side, you'll be free. But that freedom is a freedom from everything, it's a freedom that has nothing, no one to love, no one to share things with, to only ever desperately crave more and more and more, but nothing is ever enough, nothing ever satisfies. It sounds alluring because the freedom to do "whatever you want to do" sounds great--right up until you don't owe anything to anyone and thus they don't owe anything to you and suddenly you have nothing. But, hey, you're free right? Man, no thanks to that.

Episode 7: Beignets!
I rewatched S2E2 of Helluva Boss ("Seeing Stars") and got hit with that BANGER of a line from Loona about dads having issues and messing up all the time but still caring. VIVZIE, I am sensing a THEMEEEEEEE.
And thank you for all the lovely comments thus far! I'm so tickled to see how many folks connect with this, whether you're from the American South or not. Food is such a core love language for so many people.

Description under the cut!
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Radioapple comic
PANEL 1: (Lucifer sits atop a barstool-like chair on his balcony at the hotel. He's curled up in on himself, quietly crying with his head in his arms as he slumps over the marble balustrade and his tail curled around his ankles.)
PANEL 2: (Alastor gently sets a large platter of fresh beignets next to Lucifer's arm, and Lucifer glances up, looking miserable.) Alastor: (offscreen) You're not a bad father, you know.
PANEL 3: (Alastor strikes a jazz-hands pose as a canned laugh track emanates from his cane.) Alastor: Granted, YES you did fail spectacularly! You fail A LOT. But...
PANEL 4: (Closeup of the lower half of Lucifer's face as more tears fall down his cheeks.) Alastor: (offscreen) ...you're consistently, SINCERELY trying. And that is incredibly important.
PANEL 5: (closeup of Alastor's right eye in profile) Alastor: It's certainly more than my father ever did.
PANEL 6: (Alastor reaches over and places a hand on Lucifer's, which is still clutching at his upper arm. Though we can't see Lucifer's face, he's sitting a little straighter, looking up at Alastor.) Alastor: (offscreen) Or yours, for that matter.

Being Baby Blue
Rise Ramblings #313
Leonardo Hamato is…an interesting individual.
As a middle child, he doesn’t have to shoulder the responsibilities of the oldest, nor is he fawned upon or babied over like the youngest. Therefore, he ends up having more of a lackadaisical approach to life.
In his free time, instead of training like Raph, Leo can normally be found reading comic books.
And for good reason! Someone has to be up on the latest issues of Jupiter Jim and his space odysseys.
But, other than being a Jupiter Jim superfan, who is Leonardo Hamato?
If you ask Leo, he's...*takes out a list*: “Primetime,” “First,” “The Best,” “Number One,” “The Champion,” or some other iteration of all of the above.
...Huh. Anyways...
Of course, the first thing Leo would tell you is that he's the team's "Face Man."
As the "Face Man," he’s the one that turns up the charm when they need to schmooze their way out of, or into, something.
He's the face of the group! It's a very important title, right?
Well, in this scene with Hueso, we learn what Leo really feels about his place on the team.
"There's no team with just a face man." "I'm nothing without them."
Hmm. If he thinks that he is nothing without his brothers, then what's the deal with all of this "Number One" and "Champion" talk?
I believe that Leo is exhibiting a form of Reaction Formation.
Reaction Formation is a primitive defense mechanism that involves transforming one's unacceptable feelings or emotions into the opposite.
"Solicitude may be a reaction-formation against cruelty...romantic notions of chastity and purity may mask crude sexual desires, altruism may hide selfishness, and piety may conceal sinfulness."
Leo has been creating these grandiose titles and this larger-than-life persona for himself as a means to cope with his feelings of insecurity, his anxieties, and combat his self-deprecation.
Gee, forming a larger-than-life persona to counteract their suppressed feelings also reminds me of someone else we know…
But, I digress...
Behind the fabrications, his insecurities, who he pretends to be, and who he wants to be, the real Leo is still on display, starting as early as the first episode.
He's attentive, he understands the team's strengths and weaknesses, he assesses situations, he comes up with great plans on the fly, and he is a voice of reason.
These are all the characteristics of a great leader.
However, something happens when he’s actually appointed as such.
There he goes again. He's cocky, arrogant, and act's as if he's unphased even by the prospect of loosing his brothers. If this is Reaction Formation, then what is he trying to mask with these behaviors?
Previously, he was masking his insecurities, his anxieties, and his self-deprecation, but with the faces he pulls when he thinks no one can see them, I want to say the newest emotion is fear.
He is terrified of being the leader and floundering under his new responsibilities. He's scared of the consequences of his actions, and what those consequences may mean for his brothers. However, instead of voicing his insecurities, or communicating with his team, he doubles down and falls back into old habits.
The "Face Man" persona is turned up to an 11, and things get worse and worse until...
His greatest fears have been realized.
He has failed as a leader. He has failed his brothers. He has failed to stop the invasion, and they are all going to die because of his failures.
Now he's faced with the harsh reality of his own mistakes, thus he finally faces himself.
"It's scary to be responsible for the lives you protect, your team...your family. But we do it anyway because that's what it means to be a hero."
He may be speaking to Raph, but he's talking about himself.
His words are his true feelings, the same feelings that have been holding him back this entire time. By opening up, he's able to surrender to himself and let it all go.
And it's the breakthrough we all have been waiting for.
What Leo doesn't know is that through letting go, he's able to become the true face of the group he is destined to be.
He's the face of hope.

If I could inject just a little positivity to the news...
Season 2 has a lot of filler and stretches out a pretty simple mystery to six episodes. That's the appeal to some, I get it. But tightness and focus was not its strong suit. I remember feeling like it wasted a ton of time on side characters and it's possible shaving the story down to 90 minutes will skim things down to its most essential beats and be stronger for it. Basically, S2 got a lot of time given to it, and this is obviously my personal opinion but I don't think it used all of it well. I think S2 itself could have been half the length simply by employing more efficient storytelling and we'd not mourn too much.
A lot of S2's weaker plotlines feel built around people that Neil wanted to work with again, with so many recurring actors (I'm thinking of the zombies specifically, when that minisode could have easily been tighter without them). A lot of s2 to me feels like Neil just making work for the people he likes and wants to work with and a movie has to be more accountable to things like that.
Lots of entire fandoms exist around single movies. 90 minutes is not nothing. It's enough for many, many films to tell a complete story with cute character interactions and satisfying emotional arcs, especially when A&C are the only real significant connecting threads between both seasons thus far.
I don't think there are as many loose threads that absolutely need resolving as people may be thinking. Would I like to know why Aziraphale did the '40s apology dance? Would I like to see his bookshop gun? Sure. Are either of those necessarily essential to closing out the story? I don't think so. Really, what needs resolving is the second coming and, directly connected to that, Aziraphale and Crowley's rift. To me, not knowing the story obviously, that seems super reasonable to do in 90 minutes?
I don't think anyone involved in the final season can possibly be blind to the appeal of the show being Aziraphale and Crowley over anything else. That's certainly the reason why their roles were expanded to begin with from the book and why the second season was, nominally, all about them. They also now have to pay MS and DT for appearing in a movie rather than an ensemble show, there's no way they won't be front and center. Amazon wants a show that will make money and market itself; there's a reason why all the promo material for S2 was of Crowley and Aziraphale, because people engage with that stuff, reblog it, make art that promotes the show, etc. It makes no artistic or financial sense to make a movie that sidelines them.
GO is at its best when it has Terry's voice most strongly in it. That's why to me, S2 was a weaker, more meandering season overall (that, and I think the minisodes, while fun, just make the season feel comprised of different voices not always working in tandem towards a common goal). If I was a writer hired to condense a season into a film, and one of the authors had been rightfully disgraced, I would go out of my way to ensure the clearly Terry stuff is most significantly emphasized. It's telling to me that the Pratchett estate is producing and it's possible that the end result will result in more Terry, less Neil.
Think of it this way: everything we've gotten after S1 has always been extra. Imagine telling a fan of the book in the 90s that not only will you get a six episode adaptation, you also get a totally new second season, AND a movie?
Basically: I know this is disappointing but I think a lot of the pleasure of the Good Omens fandom was ALWAYS people picking up on and expanding on details, and y'all managed to do that just fine when A&C were only ensemble members in S1. You can and will do that with a movie too. And this solution both a) ensures first and foremost that Neil won't be involved or the allegations swept under the rug, and b) gives an opportunity for the heart of the story to be emphasized with greater focus, clarity and less filler.
Will we lose good stuff? Probably. But it's also possible we will get a tighter, more condensed, focused version of the best bits, the Terry Pratchett-est bits. I can easily see a 90 minute movie that, knowing they HAVE to focus on the important stuff now, is more Crowley and Aziraphale centric than ever.
#good omens#don't despair guys#i'm not quite as 'in' this fandom as others but perhaps that helps me see the hope in this outcome#of course it makes sense to be sad#but don't despair--it may even end up better for being scrubbed of neil's influence#or at least satisfying#my point is that more isn't always necessarily better
