Churchill in Moscow
So I went to see this last night. Mini review below. No real spoilers but obviously don’t read on if you want to see it completely fresh..
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed the play, it’s well written and has a very strong cast overall. As with HIA it’s very wordy and is quite a lot longer, running at 2h15, but it keeps a reasonable pace throughout.
Roger has incredible stage presence and is compelling to watch. Thankfully he doesn’t do a corny Churchill impression but he is really convincing in the role and looks the part too with the bald cap.
The actor who plays Stalin is equally strong and their rapport on stage is great.
I expected his voice and projection to be good (which it is) but his physicality in the role is also really good and I found it so interesting to watch him in such close proximity. It’s what’s so amazing about the OT - that it’s so small it’s almost like watching a TV performance as you can see every nuance and expression.
There’s some really funny parts in the play and Roger’s comic timing is fantastic… (actually all the cast have brilliant comic timing). There were bits that brought ‘Cabin Pressure’ and The Thick of It to mind and some bits really are laugh out loud funny.
Also a shout out to the two translators who add some perfect comic elements to the role but also manage a depth of characterisation that gives added tension and depth at key moments. I didn’t know either of the actors in these roles but they were fab.
The only weak link (for me) is Svetlana (Stalin’s daughter) - both in terms of the script and to some extent the acting. There was honestly little point to her role in my view and it would have been just as good without.
The intimacy of the theatre is amazing and it’s another play that really benefits from being up close and slightly claustrophobic. The set design - as for HIA - is really simple but very effective. Also watching Roger act that close up is pretty special
Definitely worth a watch on streaming if you get chance

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972)
"Come children, Uncle Alan's going to curdle your blood."
"Uncle Alan already does. Turns my stomach, too."
#children shouldn't play with dead things#1972#horror imagery#horror film#bob clark#american cinema#alan ormsby#valerie mamches#jeff gillen#anya ormsby#paul cronin#jane daly#roy engleman#robert philip#bruce solomon#alecs baird#seth sklarey#bob sherman#curtis bryant#carl zittrer#a pretty rough and ready indie horror film about a theatre troupe who fuck around with the occult (and‚ naturally‚ find out)#this hasn't a whole lot to recommend it on its own merits; it's most interesting as a formative work by filmmaker Clark his first stab at#the horror genre. juat a few years later Clark would helm the superlative Black Christmas‚ sincerely one of the greatest slasher#films ever made‚ but Children... is if anything a testament to just how much his style progressed in a short span. there are moments here#that pack a visual punch‚ tbf‚ and once the dead begin to rise it improves considerably. anything with the impressive looking 'Orville'#corpse (third and final pics above) is great. the problem is more in the script‚ cowritten with star and frequent Clark collaborator Ormsby#it's a turgid mess‚ with an hour of bitchy bickering between the theatre group before anything really happens. there's some great snark in#there and it's pretty entertaining at first‚ but my god does it go on (and on) until you're willing the zombies to tear everyone to shreds#in the zombie canon this has obvious debts to Romero's NotLD as well as more traditional folklore‚ but its emphasis stays frustratingly on#the unlikeable characters and their incidental conversations rather than exploring anything more interesting.

I cannot stop thinking about “The Meek Shall Inherit” from the fords theatre production of little shop.
DURING SEYMOUR’S SOLILOQUY MUSHNIK COMES OUT DRENCHED IN BLOOD HOLDING ORINS HEAD, AND HE JUST WALKS TOWARD HIM. THE GHOSTS OF HIS CONSCIENCE REPREMANDING HIM, WARNING HIM, REMINDING HIM OF WHAT HES DONE.

I’ve been thinking about the music arch again (just kidding it’s always playing in my head in a loop) and I still can’t get over how INSANE it was for iruma to go up to Eliza and act as if he was confessing his love to her. Like, that’s some theatre kid shit. And I know that because that’s exactly the type of shit I would pull in high school. Pretending to be in love with my homie, dressing up in a fancy outfit to propose and do a performance for them? Only to be super happy and amused when they catch onto the fact that this is a bit. That’s exactly the form of humor you have to have as a theatre nerd.
When I saw him roll up in the outfit and get on one knee I was hooting and hollering. It’s so cringy and embarrassing and I see myself in it way too much. It’s the type of fun you can only have when you are closely bonded, close enough to joke in that silly way knowing you won’t receive mean words about it. Sure, your friends WILL tease you about it but never in a cruel way. You have to be able to trust the people you play off in this way. Is Iruma in love with her? No. But he heavily admires her. And while goofing around, he still wants to make her happy. There’s a playful loving energy. These little “I’m in love with you” jokes happen because you do care about each other. And sure, in love maybe not. But willing to make a fool of yourself to make them smile? Yes indeed :)

Crutchie in my modern au does theatre, and im having trouble thinking what his dream roles would be. Thoughts?
Crutchie in Newsies...! Some of his dream roles would maybe be Seymore from Little Shop of Horrors,Jack from Into the Woods, Dickon from The Secret Garden, One of the gang from West Side Story....Actually there are so many roles I think he would like to play! What do you think? I think he would get cast as Toby from Sweeney Todd and Archie from 13 the musical lol. I think he would maybe face a lot of discrimination because of his disability and not be cast fairly (or at all) I think he would speak out on that.

one of the best moments in Challengers is something only italians will get, i was giggling in my seat when "pensiero stupendo" by patty bravo started playing in the last part of the movie because that's a song about a throuple. genius.
the lyrics saying: and you and us and her between us
and me singing and giggling while they played this in the background of the storm before the match!! sublime!!!! what a movie! and no one in the french-speaking audience around me knew what was going on
here a link with eng lyrics HAHA

"it is the realm beyond, and between, and through, and past the world"
since the release of the character playlists, and the rain road in the arc 1 finale my brain has been absolutely spinning about musicality in the wizard, the witch, and the wild one. and the relationship between music and the spirit realm, and then how that intersects with umora.
because since the beginning there has been this emphasis between the world of spirits and music. eursulon's theme, when we first meet him, before he crosses over, is this beautiful choral music—the first time we hear singing in the show. and then there is your honey is quiet, honey with a note of song. the first diegetic song we hear performed, is sung to honour the spirits.
(edit: eursulon’s breath!!! the thing that brings him back to himself, after it had been lost!!!!)
so i have the rain road on repeat and i'm re-listening to fireside chats and in the one for the first episode brennan describes the world of spirit by saying "it is the world beyond, and between, and through, and past the world" and it reminded me of the scoring. we hear the stories of umora, but beyond, between, through, and past the world; surrounding it, but separate from it is the score. (making me feel like us, the audience, is sitting and existing in the spirit realm. and if it is supernal, if it is what is beyond and between and through and past the world— aren't we?)
but that called to mind eursulon's character playlist, and how it, especially in it's representations of eursulon's early journey, was so instrumental. and that led me to ponder the intersection of music and language. how young eursulon's theme was choral but not lyrical.
the structure of language is the domain of umora.
and how that intersects interestingly with what we have seen of the lingua arcana. suvi's rhythmic somatic components. reflexive indicative and null clef alluding to the structure of grammar and music theory.
and then how the rain road is choral and lyrical, together. the first breaking of that line between the score and the world. connecting, like ame does.
and that is why in the wizard the witch and the wild one ame is a meta narrative representation of musical theatre. in this essay i will—

I’m sorry
#recently have been doing a bit of a musical marathon cause I’ll never stop being a fucking theatre kid (womp womp)#and like#okay so there’s musicals I outright dislike (dear Evan Hansen) but something rotten is in this middle section thats like#you had a cool premise. why the fuck are you so over saturated I’m sex puns and musical references to the point I can’t take u seriously#like I’m supposed to be invested in the romance between Nigel and Portia(?) but everyone of their interactions is just#sex innuendo sex pun sex joke#then there’s nick whos so fuckinh annoying I’m sorry#I’m supposed to feel sympathetic for him meanwhile he’s just like ?? defending a musical about eggs??#and during all of this his brother is clearly spilling his heart out to him#and he just never fucking approved of his love for Portia#even Shakespeare who’s supposed to be the villain or smth is more fun#(and the only British one)#AND NOT JUST IN THE villains are more fun way#but also in the HES ACTUALLY ENJOYABLE#man has a rivarly but still doesn’t want his rival dead cmon that’s interesting#and I’m supposed to be on nicks side durinh all of this#like???? the guy who’s had one song about him being sexist. the one guy who’s being so incosideto this his brother. the guy who’s-#-less enjoyable then the ANTAGONIST#idkkk. idk maybe it’s supposed to be light hearted and I’m being weird cause my favourite musical is falsettos so y’know-#-it’s a character exploration based story#and I know realistically not all musicals want that. but idk it’s just#boring to me#to have a cool premise and fill it with so many jokes it’s like. how am I supposed to take the deeper moments seriously#anyways the songs are good. I hate Shakespeare fucks#and obviously hard to be the bard is great#thank you Christian borle . you just have a knack for playing queer (in this case coded) men don’t you#txt

In short: the biggest musical theatre in the country finally announced the Finnish production of Moulin Rouge! today, and I'm unhappy.
I'm unhappy because they're charging absolutely exorbitant prices for a theatre that gets public funding, and they didn't even have the good sense to announce the cast at the same time to distract from their overcharging.
You wouldn't think "making the Duke proud" is the vibe anyone wants associated with their production of MR!, but somehow, it seems like that's what they're going for here.

orvphil: so real
for example used analysis on the following instances
orville's physical reluctance & difficulty kneeling to propose to jane vs. readily swinging right into such a kneel with phil during 'til we meet again
'til we meet again
(see above) noting the "both immediately becoming So happy to be doing this" and "staring at each other for an unbroken ten seconds after finishing the song which was evidently beyond simply a [hold for applause] thing"
having indeed an adorable little meet-cute, which may not be an integral part of every eventual writer/lyricist & composer partnership
when phil drops in at wingate manor and he an orville have a private little wave to each other like =)
sitting next to each other sharing a hay bale and orville gets drinks for them both and phil walks orville home
lucky day
the choreography where orville's at the piano and phil swings it out while rotating it and orville's "walking" while sitting to one side to help (my analysis: going ohhhhh ;w;)
both simultaneously answering "his" when asked whose song it is like the earnest effortless mutual admiration and appreciation huh fellas
margaret talking about protecting your heart from these theatricals; orville Is one of these theatricals, and he loves it; phil watching him / reacting in this moment including his little "hell yeah" move like he had for orville going off in lucky day
their general enthusiasm together / for each other / enjoyment of being around each other and increased ease of operating when around each other
phil wishing orville could hear his music and talking about how orville ruined his own night to save theirs, then remarking "...what a guy!" mmhm
🌈🌈🌈
#orvphil#summer stock#orville wingate#also everyone was so funny & my god they were dancing & it's so true this show was a delight. i laughed smiled applauded effused enjoyed#shoutout to orville's escaping ''don't do Anything but get married have children'' through theatre; being gay; a little luck#it's so true: william (orville) & veanne (margaret) & gilbert (phil) were all so funny & great individually & in any combo#anthony/tony (montgomery) too lmao his ''....how dare you.'' iconic#shoutout to having orville show up for 1 Sec (in pajamas i believe) for the purposes of villain i have done thy mother. he just lives here#phil is great. trying to hold it together....writer's trick from my momma Use Your Words#and then with orville helping out he can chill out & enjoy his wins & orville can have any wins & enjoy them & chill & Do Things too#and everyone is so cool to him right away. why wouldn't they be. hugging like everybody hey besties#obviously corbin bleu is being his national treasure america's sweetheart leading role & Dancing....all the praises warranted#everyone crushes their role & is a delight. including any little moments w/the ensemble / all Ensembling things. go t.j.#it was great of course & a delight & again the orvphil is extremely real. 100% the textual intention & execution. thanks cheri love you#let's get that summer 2024 show if they can / wanna for real (they want to; let's just see it shake out. summer 2024 is pure speculation)#Oh Nooo if i forgot anything & have to reblog & add to this / rewatch & re/discover any delights

I just remembered back in like 9th grade my high school's musical was Willy Wonka and the Guy who was playing the Grandpa (i dont remember his name) consumed Bubble soap
Someone from above the stage dropped the cap to a bottle of bubbles and it was very obvious but this Guy doesn't miss a beat, picks it up (off of our verryy dirty stage), and pops it in his mouth.
He spit it out and exclaims "disgusting! What kind of things are you making here, Wonka?! You call that candy!"
At the time it was hilarious and he was my theatrical hero

#my girlfriend and i went to see the barbie movie today#sadly it was rather disappointing and neither of us liked it nearly as much as we wanted to or we were hoping we would#also our theatre experience wasnt great cos there were a bunch of little kids (all around ten years old) in the last row#and they were being inappropriate throughout the film but especially at the serious and heartfelt moments#(they were talking and giggling and making gross noises like burping loudly)#and it was clear they did not want to be there cos when the movie ended one of them loudly said 'finally!'#it was just horrible and luckily someone sitting in the row in front of us shushed them during the final serious moment of the movie#anyway i gave it 3/5 stars on letterboxd and did not give it a heart for liking it#between this and everything everywhere all at once (which i gave 3 and a half/5 stars and no heart)#im questioning if my standards for comedy in films is too high#however my girlfriend and i watched yesterday (2019) with my dad well yesterday (it was a rewatch for my dad and i)#and we all really love the comedy in it so riddle me that#anyhoo for the prompt#i added a definition to 'haunt' as i couldnt find it anywhere but i know it is used in the same vein as 'haunting'#but i see this as an opportunity to write about someone who has passed away coming back to 'haunt' a loved one in a gentle and loving way#as a way to look out for them if you will and hence 'sweet'#and im looking forward to writing that#thanks for reading#writing#writer#creative writing#writing prompt#writeblr#trying to be a writeblr at least
