Queer Movie Review Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

This film, to me, is an incredibly representation of yearning. You understand Marianne completely, and by the end, you view Heloise in the same way she does. It feels abstract, of course, using metaphors and parallels to showcase the two lover's emotions towards eachother, and to foreshadow their ending. This is a beautiful story, and it frustrates me that I can't put my feelings on it into a cohesive analysis. I'll try my best though. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Women in this film are portrayed from the female gaze, not the male gaze. There's nudity in the film, but it's framed in a casual, nonsexual way. Marianna sits naked in front of a fireplace to warm herself. Heloise is shirtless as she lays in bed with Marianne. But there's never once a sex scene, and any intimacy is handled incredibly well, focusing on tender touches, longing looks, and raw emotions, rather than sexuality itself. It feels so refreshing, and it makes the two characters and their relationship feel so real, and so emotional. The movie is framed from Marianne's perspective, the perspective of an artist. She sees beauty in everything. The concept of her analyzing Heloise for a painting being a metaphor for her yearning is just so beautiful. This is the part I have a hard time putting into words. Because every look the two share in the movie, every touch, every interaction, it all has a double meaning, it's all a metaphor that foreshadows their ending. The use of literary devices in this film is just so perfect. I don't know any other way to word it. The way Heloise's grief at the end of the film is showcased is so beautiful. Earlier in the film, the two discuss how Heloise has never heard an orchestra before, and Marianne plays a Vivaldi piece on the piano for her. At the end of the film, the two both sit across from each other as they listen to an orchestra play the same piece. Marianne sees her and watches her the whole song, and we get a close up of Heloise, we see every expression she makes, and we get to witness the wide range of emotions that she experiences as she hears the same piece performed by someone she lost long ago, someone she remembers clearly in her heart, but knows she'll never see again. And all it would take is for her to turn her head once, she would see Marianne across the theater. But she never does, she preserves the memory of her lost love as is. It's such a beautiful scene. The thing I slowly began to realize as I watched the film was that as Marianne began to see more and more of Heloise, so did I. When she was studying Heloise's basic features for the sake of the painting, I found myself trying to memorize her too. By the end of the film, as she's watching the orchestra play, I felt like I didn't just see her features, I saw her feelings. I saw her emotions as memories of the life she lost played in her head, I saw what that bittersweet smile really meant. You begin to feel Heloise's pain, just from watching the subtle expressions she makes. It was so heartbreaking to watch. All in all, this mildly pretentious explanation is pretty much all I could type up. I can't really reiterate enough how this film made me feel. It's so gorgeous, you really just need to watch it to experience the emotions that I can't put into words.

i give it a 9/10. it's probably my new favorite movie

You’re basically the mother and all that is required of you is that you take care of what’s being given to you or what has already been given to you. Remember, things do take time but it also requires knowledge and nurturing. So expect a powerful change here that’s going to unlock a new world of abundance, wisdom, and knowledge for you. you are taken by surprise just how well prepared the date was (he would literally do anything just to make you happy, no matter the cost or methods needed to achieve it. i mean, ‼️SPOILER ALERT‼️ he literally built a cinema before with futuristic technology to show a possible future you might have, there is nothing this man can’t do)

you could tell he was nervous, after all he has never been on a date with someone. the only experience he has is hearing stories from your mom when she was still alive and possibly fangirling about your father

aside from his well-concealed nervousness that only you were able to observe from his slight change in his normally serene expression, you would’ve thought that he had some sort of experience with this considering how flawless and smooth the entire date went.

The Oscars Hate Animation

First I want to say that I don't hold any animosity towards the films that were nominated for best picture. I haven't seen them all but they all seem pretty damn great (Maestro feels oscar-baity to me but whatever).

What I don't like is how animation is put into its own box. They can't ignore it completely, but they can push all animated works into the animated film category and make sure that none of them can possibly take the main awards. Animation is treated as something for children, or hyper-violent fare for edgy teens.

You couldn't imagine this happening to painters. Vincent Van Gogh was never told that he made nice things for children to look at. Picasso was never told that he could be making "real" art if he switched to photography. A single image is art, but millions in a row to give the illusion of motion is somehow less than art.

It's just all so stupid. Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse is a beautiful movie with such fluid animation, expressive characters and just flush with color. The movie isn't happy with just having a single great art style, instead incorporating new art styles and movements as it switches between universes. It's incredible, and it's given the same amount of recognition as Wish simply because they both happen to be animated. The voice actors were not nominated for their work, neither were the producers, sound designers, editors or even the director. The only recognition it can get is "best movie of this selection that we don't really care about but feel compelled to mention".

If you've never really watched an animated film that you thought was really mature and thoughtful, I've got the just the list for you. Personally I recommend Akira, Perfect Blue, Redline, Angel's Egg, Isle of Dogs and Mad God but most of the movies on that list are pretty great.

I’m just venting and sharing my personal thoughts. I’m normally a very happy person, but right now I’m so mad. I’m permitted to do activities for science, and the teacher said I’m only allowed to do one art based activity for the entire year? But what if my brain works artistically? I tried to dance around this by making a physical model of a flower and showing how it works on the inside and then doing a separate activity where I drew a mushroom’s lifecycle and wrote a little paper on it. Those are obviously different projects that I put effort into and learned from.

I got points taken off both projects because they included art. What the heck? Why does school hate art? How do I even do a project without art? I’m so confused. Do I just write a paper? I get belittled for doing the things I find enjoyment in. “Don’t draw on your paper. You’re not listening”, “I’ll take points off if you do art.”

There was this time when I was in 4th grade and I doodled on my test while I was thinking about how to answer a problem. The teacher started YELLING AT ME. She took my test, and told all of the kids to start listening class and to never draw in class. Then she erased my doodle and sent me to the counselors office because I was crying. Long story short, this teacher had created lots of problems for a lot of other kids and she ended up getting fired later on.

But my point still stands. Art is important? Hello? What if we belittled mathematicians for doing math problems and yelled at scientists for doing experiments? Science brained people have such a clear path to college and so many opritunities. Artistic people have to blaze their own path while everyone’s telling them they’re gonna fail.

Let’s talk about this

Movies would be so dumb without music. Movies are important in culture! Video games are all about art and music. Video games are a big form of entertainment. Life without art is not a life at all. Look outside? THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE IS ART. The trees, the sun, the grass, wow! Yeah you can explain the beauty of earth with science, but I feel like we keep ignoring the clear companion to science which is art.

Why are creative people being attacked by AI and pushed down by society?

I know this sweet woman who is so skilled at art. She was told she wasn’t gonna make it financially, so she switched her major to engineering. She is so depressed with life. And she doesn’t have the confidence to go back to school and look into an animation job. What if rocket scientists were belittled and told to go become painters? What the heck?

This is so wrong. You know what else is wrong? Art class! In most schools, there’s only one art class! And it’s an elective, not a core class! As if they’re suggesting that art and music is optional and a lesser skill. 😡 In an age where movies and media are such a big part of society… don’t you think the arts are— idk, valuable?

My dad had a best friend who sucked at school because he thought strictly artistically. He was an amazing creator with a HUGE imagination! He was told that he was stupid and dumb because he couldn’t do math, and he failed multiple grades— but he was the greatest artist I have ever seen. He is no longer with us because he took his own life due to feeling like a failure. 💔

Don’t get me wrong, math and science is beautiful and extremely valuable! But I just wish that schools would acknowledge the beauty in the arts too. Life without art would be the most depressing place on earth. No murals, paintings, doodles, orchestras, ballads, visuals, concept art, video game characters, etc. Art is good for the mental health, why is it that so many people are struggling with mental health nowadays? It could be that the world is telling people to suppress their creative side. ❤️

My two cents. If you’re a science and math brained person, that’s totally okay and I love you! 💕 One of my best friends is obsessed with neurology and I hold her in a high degree of respect. My brother wants to become a surgeon, and my Dad is a doctor. Science is extremely important! This is not a hate post on right brained people ❤️❤️❤️ I’m just frustrated at how artists are often treated.

Do ya ever think about Andy and Annie's dance during "Rag Dolly" and feel like watching that specific scene on loop AND sorta feeling like doing their little dance with someone at the same time 'cause hhhhh I love it and those sibs a bunch, it's just the somftest and adorablest dance to a likewise comfy song made more so by Andy's singing and I get a genuine burst of serotonin revisiting it (and lowkey that scene/song alone was what got me to watch the musical for the first time a couple years back :> if ya also have knowledge on who animated their dance or any part of Rag Dolly for that matter that'd be cool to learn about too! but I understand if that might end up being a lot to share :0)

AAAH i love love love that sequence so much!! its the cutest dance it has so much character and Andy's voice becoming so gentle and sweet right after singing No Girl's Toy is just the best thing ever. he doesn't even like Babette he's just helping his sister make a good impression.

what's crazy is looking through this whole book - i'm talking about The Animated Raggedy Ann  & Andy - An Intimate Look at the Art of Animation Its History, Techniques, and Artists by John Canemaker (the linked version has no pictures D-:) - Rag Dolly isn't really mentioned that much, despite being essentially the main theme music.

i would love to tell you more for a fact, but i just can't say for sure who animated it, as a lot of scenes aren't credited individually.

for some songs, like Richard Williams doing No Girl's Toy, Tissa David doing Candy Hearts, Art Babbitt doing Blue, and Emery Hawkins doing Never Get Enough, the artists get a section dedicated to them and the main chunk of animation work they contributed. in the credits of the film, Art Babbitt animates the Camel, Emery Hawkins animates the Greedy, etc etc - they were generally in charge of those character-centric scenes, along with a team of inbetweeners, painters, etc.

there isn't one for Rag Dolly, since it's relatively short and bounces between characters. so basically TAKE ALL OF THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT!!!

the ONLY expertise i have is that 1. ive flipped thru john canemaker's book and 2. i love this movie so much

what i CAN do is make wild guesses ^_^ and this first little verse as Ann fidgets with her dress and apron just SCREAMS Tissa David to me. here's a pose from that sequence side-by-side with one of her famous (and one of my favourite) Raggedy Ann drawings.

here's something she notes about Ann's first action sequence of falling off the chair (she was set to work on candy hearts before anything else, to really get to know the characters):

and here's a fantastically convenient gifset from Rag Dolly. EVERYTHING!!! her hair falling in her face, the movement of the fabric, the wonderful sense of timing. also note the lack of eyelashes, which isnt exclusive to one artist or anything, but does pop up in David's drawings:

now to go on a tangent about an artist who could well have worked on that scene, and whom i wish there was some more info about!!!

"The only thing that Disney never understood is that to animate girls, one must be a girl!" - Tissa David believed (along with pretty much the rest of the team) that herself and Chrystal Russell (whose work is woefully sparse in the book but very much present in the movie) were the best animators of 'little Annie'. she also worked on Fern Gully; you can find her credits under her married name, Chrystal Klabunde! she supported Tissa as the primary actor for Raggedy Ann, and her style appears as this distinctive, adorable, muppet-y look throughout the film. these pics are examples of, if not her own drawings, then her stylistic influence in these scenes:

she's credited as animating the playroom dolls, but you can notice her influence in Annie come through from the beginning ('I Look, and What Do I See?') to the end ('Home') of the whole thing. like i said, the credits are never too specific, but if i had to GUESS, then this looks like her stuff. we also know for a fact she worked on the first song because of this lovely set of drawings in the book!

here's the sweetest photo of Didi Conn (Ann's voice) and Chrystal together with some clean-up sheets of a shot right before Rag Dolly - when Ann introduces herself to Babette, 'my name is Raggedy Ann, and this is my brother, Raggedy Andy,' (i still can't confirm whether they're her drawings but i wouldn't be surprised!):

anyway tl;dr: i have no way of knowing for sure who was in charge of it, and no doubt a whole team of artists were involved, (and i'm in no way trying to discredit anyone if i'm wrong) but my best guess is you can thank Tissa David for the first part, and Chrystal Russell (now Chrystal Klabunde) for their dance together - the animation changes subtley between those shots. i wish i had more artists/resources to look at, or god forbid a full breakdown of that scene, but at this point i would bet money on David's part in Annie's little introduction.

i had so much fun playing amateur detective so double thank you!!! again i'm probably wrong about ALL of this but it was a blast to reread sections of the book and rewatch different bits of the movie to sleuth around for clues. i hope whatever i have come up with is of some interest to you, and i hope someone learned something about the wonderful artists behind this movie :-D

It's so weird. I go to art class every week, and have for weeks; Rarely speak to anybody there. But when I do-

Today I spoke to a very interesting man after drawing next to him in silence for far too long.

He studied at one of the most prestigious art colleges in the country, worked in the military as a paramedic in the Airforce for 11 years , all while honing his artistic craft. This guy dumped insane amounts of random wisdom onto me about life, art, the battlefield, and everything inbetween. He told me, he was so grateful for a place to express himself like this. He told me how awesome it was I was doing art at such a young age.

He told me, "keep at it."

Another person I met a bit ago- she used to study under a stained glass painter for years during the 80's. Her instructor , (who was a master of her craft,) was admitted to a psych ward because she would lick the mercury-paint off her brush in order to wet it.... multiple times a day. for *years* Lady never saw her instructor again after she was admitted. stopped doing stained glass painting shortly afterwards. got into pottery a bit, before stopping for 30 years. Just now got back into it- she's so eager and excited to learn. Love her.

A 50-60 year old woman who travelled the country, going to different art schools to hone her craft. Doesn't work. At the beginning of the semester, I disliked her greatly. But after working so diligently next to somebody for so long, a certain fondness was formed. We chatted mindlessly as our brushes created strokes down the canvas. She would recommend me good places to buy supplies, and I would lend her some of my paints if she ran out.

A man in his 20's, who I never spoke to until the very end of the semester. He and I would talk about our techniques, and our favorite movies and characters, despite the decade age gap. When the sky turned sour , thick, and smoky from wildfires, he and I would crack jokes about Blade Runner. He was so cool.

This older woman, a little bit clumsy, maybe mid 40's- Never touched a pencil in her life. I don't know much about her story, but I am currently helping her whenever I see she is struggling. It is small things, but it makes me happy to see her improving each and every week. Maybe it's teaching her how to correctly sharpen her pencil, maybe it's giving her an item she forgot.

Today, she wished me a happy week *and used my name*. Our interactions were minor, but she likely overheard the instructor speaking to me, and remembered it to wish me a nice day.

These are all such small things- But everything about them brings me life.

It's seeing all these different personalities, and not even realizing just how rich they truly are until you are knees deep into a riveting conversation with them.

I think this is the reason I do art.

Okay, here are my thoughts on the Hallmark Mystery movies and Hallmark+ programming!

Hallmark Mystery

🎄 This Time Each Year  Premiere Date: Thursday, Oct. 24 at 8/7c Cast: Alison Sweeney, Niall Matter Premise: Lauren (Sweeney) and Kevin (Matter) were once happily married and thriving as a family but the couple has spent almost the past year in a trial separation and are working hard to co-parent their young son Charlie (Ezra Wilson). Kevin is determined to make their family whole again and it’s clear he and Lauren still care for each other deeply. When Lauren’s mother (Laura Soltis) suddenly comes into town, she asks Kevin to pretend they’re still together as she hasn’t yet broken the news to her. As they try to keep up this ruse, they begin to remember what life was like and Lauren sees the strides Kevin has made to get back on the right path and just maybe, this holiday will be a season of healing and bring happiness back into their lives.

This sounds very sweet.

🎄 My Sweet Austrian Holiday  Premiere Date: Thursday, Oct. 31 at 8/7c Cast: Brittany Bristow, Will Kemp Premise: Charlotte (Bristow) is an American, who has lived in Vienna since inheriting a chocolate shop from her grandparents two years ago. Since then, she has worked tirelessly to grow the business into a successful enterprise. Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year and Charlotte has been selected as one of the finalists for Vienna’s chocolatier of the year. Taking home the prize could provide some much-needed money to fend off a large developer from taking over her grandparents’ shop. Charlotte soon meets and befriends Henry (Kemp), and they bond over their shared affinity for quality chocolate. But a surprising twist of fate just might end their newfound relationship on a bittersweet note.

Let me guess. Is he the developer? I feel like this movie doesn't quite belong in this group. I don't care for Britt but I do love Will so hopefully it'll be enjoyable.

🎄 Five Gold Rings  Premiere Date: Thursday, Nov. 7 at 8/7c Cast: Holland Roden, Nolan Gerard Funk Premise: When New York City painter Audrey Moss (Roden) returns to her small Minnesota hometown for the holidays, she’s met with an unexpected quest from her beloved late grandmother: find the owners of five mysterious gold rings and return them to their rightful homes before Christmas morning, only nine days away. In her bequeathment, Grandma also urges Audrey to team up with local private investigator and childhood friend, Finn O’Sullivan (Funk). From gingerbread house building to the annual Giving Gala, these two begin to bond over more than just their quest. As Audrey and Finn unravel the mystery of the missing rings’ owners, they discover there is more to their relationship than they ever expected to find.

Holland is one of my absolute faves so I'm excited for this one. I love a little holiday quest!

🎄 A Reason for the Season  Premiere Date: Thursday, Nov. 14 at 8/7c Cast: Taylor Cole, Kevin McGarry Premise: In order to earn her trust fund, Evie (Cole) is tasked with granting Christmas wishes to the people who saved her life on the night of her birth. To aid in her cause, she employs Kyle (McGarry), a handsome local attorney, to track down those who helped and attempts to secretly learn what they might want while maintaining her anonymity. With Christmas fast approaching, the heiress and the attorney can’t resist falling for each other’s charms as they ramp up their gift giving efforts. But as time ticks down, will she be able to accomplish the mission and grant all of the wishes by Christmas Eve?

What an interesting plot! I think these two will be really great together.

🎄 A Novel Noel  Premiere Date: Thursday, Nov. 21 at 8/7c Cast: Julie Gonzalo, Brendan Penny Premise: A successful New York City book editor (Gonzalo), who is losing touch with her passion after a few setbacks this year learns she was chosen to run a bookstore in the small town of Saint Ives for the month of December. While realizing a childhood dream, but butting heads with the handsome son (Penny) of the bookstore owners, she comes to realize that her love for bringing out the creativity of others is still her true calling, and untapped talent (and love) can be found anywhere… even in the writings of a cranky business-minded man, especially at Christmas.

Sounds cute and cozy.

🎄 Christmas Under the Lights  Premiere Date: Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 8/7c Cast: Heather Hemmens, Marco Grazzini Premise: Emily (Hemmens) is always reluctant to return home to her family’s animal rescue ranch — but when her mother passes away, her brother Nick requests her help organizing the annual Christmas Carnival. When she arrives, she discovers Nick’s friend, Luke (Grazzini), staying at the ranch — and that Luke was once a successful artist who works with light. Though initially reluctant to collaborate, Emily and Luke work hard to pull off the best, most light-filled carnival the town has ever seen, a healing celebration of Emily’s mother’s legacy and the magic of Christmas — and along the way feel sparks of romance as radiant as the lights themselves.

Planning events is never that appealing of a plot to me but this sounds like it'll have some heart and I really like both leads.

🎄 A Dance in the Snow  Premiere Date: Thursday, Dec. 5 at 8/7c Cast: Erica Cerra, Mark Ghanimé, Vanessa Burghardt, Dorian Giordano Premise: Melanie’s (Cerra) 17-year-old autistic daughter Jenny (Burghardt) is a senior in high school and looking forward to college. After a bad experience her junior year, Jenny is not interested in attending her final Christmas dance before graduating. Melanie decides to surprise Jenny by getting involved in the school’s planning committee to create a welcoming dance for all students. Meanwhile, Jenny and her friends secretly plan their own party, in part to honor Melanie. Melanie works with Jenny’s literature teacher (Ghanimé) on the dance and starts to fall for him while Jenny develops something special with a new classmate (Giordano) at school. When their secrets snowball, however, their plans begin to drive a wedge between the usually tightknit mother and daughter at the holidays.

This sounds really sweet. I love that they want to do something special for each other.

🎄 All I Need for Christmas  Premiere Date: Thursday, Dec. 12 at 8/7c Cast: Mallory Jansen, Dan Jeannotte Premise: Maggie (Jansen) has been trying for years to break in as a singer/songwriter. Now faced with challenges of new apps and social media, Maggie fears she’s outdated and unable to compete in a tech-savvy world. While helping her parents on their farm at Christmastime, she meets Archer (Jeannotte), an entrepreneur who has come back to town to spend the holidays alone. Archer is developing large-scale apps and is a tech enthusiast. At first, Maggie blames him for all of her songwriting woes. To her surprise, he encourages her to get back in touch with music that really matters and write from the heart; tech can be used in a supportive role to help her achieve her dreams without replacing the art of songwriting. Archer is dealing with loss of family, and through her tight family bonds, Maggie helps Archer find ways of moving beyond years of family feuding. In this holiday romance, Maggie and Archer both discover there is merit in preserving the tried and true while making room for new ideas and methods to bring people together and help make dreams come true.

To be honest, this sounds kind of lame to me but I'm sure it'll be cute.

🎄 Trading Up Christmas  Premiere Date: Thursday, Dec. 19 at 8/7c Cast: Italia Ricci, Michael Xavier Premise: Michelle (Ricci) is the dreamer of her family, always brimming with imaginative ideas to make the world a better place. This Christmas, her sister Keri desperately needs a new home, and Michelle hatches a creative plan to help. Starting with just a Christmas stocking, she sets out to trade her way up to something far greater—a house for Keri. While Keri dismisses it as a far-fetched idea, local reporter Dan (Xavier) is intrigued. Assigned to cover Michelle’s story, Dan follows her closely, and as her plan gains attention, he starts to see the world through her hopeful eyes. As Michelle and Dan grow closer, so do their feelings for each other. But when it seems her plan has failed and she fears ruined her relationship with Keri, Michelle is ready to give up. It’s Dan’s love and belief in her that reignites hope just when she needs it most.

I think this is a fun concept and I love Italia. I wish someone would get me a house.

I'm really looking forward to both new fictional shows. I don't care about Wes' show at all. I'm excited about Finding Mr. Christmas. I think that'll be really fun and silly.

When the gala is threatened by a scrooge-like estate owner planning to sell the venue, rumors begin to threaten Tina and Michael’s newfound connection. As Tina works to keep venue’s doors open for the gala, she just might unwrap a new chapter in her life, filled with love and holiday cheer.

I mean... sure. Nothing to get too excited about.

🎄 Unwrapping Christmas: Mia’s Prince  Release Date: Thursday, Nov. 14 Cast: Kathryn Davis, Nathan Witte Premise: Mia (Davis), an accountant at All Wrapped Up, is stunned when local celebrity Beau Cavannagh (Witte), who looks just like her favorite romance novel hero, enters her life. Despite her doubts, Beau, an heir to a wealthy family, proves his feelings for her are real, even as his family disapproves. Mia soon finds herself swept up in a fairytale romance that’s straight out of her dreams.

Okay, this sounds really cute.

🎄 Unwrapping Christmas: Lily’s Destiny  Release Date: Thursday, Nov. 21 Cast: Ashley Newbrough, Torrance Coombs Premise: Lily (Newbrough), the marketing guru of All Wrapped Up, believes the universe guides us to our destiny and it appears that it’s guiding her toward a celebrity realtor. However, when she feels an unexpected spark with journalist Sean Whitlock (Coombs) during an interview, her heart starts to question everything. As her chemistry with Sean grows, Lily begins to wonder if he’s the true match she’s been waiting for all along.

And this one sounds lame.

🎄 Unwrapping Christmas: Olivia’s Reunion  Release Date: Thursday, Nov. 28 Cast: Cindy Busby, Jake Epstein Premise: Olivia (Busby), the gift-wrapping expert at All Wrapped Up, makes a delivery to a remote cabin only to find her ex-boyfriend Benjamin (Epstein) on the other side of the door. After the pair have a minor spat, an unexpected storm traps them together. Neither of them is happy to be forced to spend time together. However as talk turns to shared memories, old feelings and warmth begins to resurface and they are left wondering if it’s possible to get it right a second time.

I do love when people are forced together... but, on the other hand, it's Cindy.

🎄 Season’s Greetings from Cherry Lane  Release Date: Thursday, Dec. 5 Cast: Jonathan Bennett, Annabelle Bourke, Corey Cott, Sarah Dugdale, Shannon Kook, Vincent Rodriguez III Premise: In 1951, a doctor (Cott) wants to make the holiday special for his worried wife (Bourke) before he is shipped out to serve in Korea, but when she suffers a minor fracture to her arm his carefully planned out Christmas Eve plans are upended. In 2003, a newly married couple (Dugdale, Kook) who are always in agreement about everything hosts two sets of in-laws for Christmas Eve for the first time and find that they may not have had as much in common as they thought they did. And in 2024, a couple (Bennett, Rodriguez III) tries to arrange special Christmas surprises for each other but keeping them a secret may be harder than they thought.

I was very skeptical about getting 3 more of these movies but seeing the plan for them now has me interested.

🎄 Happy Holidays from Cherry Lane  Release Date: Thursday, Dec. 12 Cast: Benjamin Ayres, Catherine Bell, James Denton, Erica Durance, Julie Gonzalo, Ryan Rottman Premise: Good Witch reunion! In 1960, Eli (Ayres) and Penny (Durance) take in Eli’s curmudgeonly father, Walter (Serge Houde, Chesapeake Shores), and are forced to navigate some tricky family waters to get through the holidays while also working on a Christmas themed time capsule for son Alex’s school project. In 1998, we see Regina (Bell) and Nelson’s (Denton) first meeting: stuck together when a blizzard strands Nelson in Regina’s home on Christmas Eve. In 2015, Jessie (Gonzalo) faces a big challenge while planning her sister’s last-minute Christmas Eve wedding – the officiant is Tim (Rottman), her high school sweetheart, whom she hasn’t seen in almost 20 years.

I feel like all of these are going to have something different to offer and that's fun.

In 1981, John (Brotherton) and Lizzie (Cahill) learn that this will be their last Christmas on Cherry Lane after John receives a job offer in Michigan and Lizzie finds out she’s pregnant. In 2000, best friends Matt (Page) and Rebecca (D’Orsay) find unexpected feelings developing as they try to find out who is behind a series of Christmas-themed random acts of kindness.

i had to consider this question thoroughly… surprisingly, there’s no artist i’ve ever been really inspired by in a way of wanting to incorporate some part of their style to mine. it’s the particular moments that impact me deeply. it’s sort of visceral, i’ve never had an intention to create my own individual style so i’ve never kept track of influences, but i, of course, do not exist in a vacuum and there’s gotta be things that leave an imprint on my creations. it’s more like i absorb beauty all around and it feeds my creative energy as a whole.

to name people who i look up to:

among comic artists i admire Takehiko Inoue most, that’s for sure. it’s the author of Slam Dunk, Vagabond and Real (the latter is my favorite). he has this impeccable academic-ish skill and realistic art is kinda my realm so i aspire to become as meticulous as him, but not particularly LIKE him.

in other manga artists it’s usually not the style in itself, but individual visual storytelling decisions that make me go crazy. i love Tatsuki Fujimoto’s paneling when it comes to dialogues — these sections of almost identical close-up panels with characters’ faces which expressions are subtly changing with every new phrase. i wholeheartedly respect Yoshihiro Togashi’s versatility when it comes to character design — the nerve he has to interchange detailed and realistic figures with vague, primitive ones. i respect Ai Yazawa’s line work and here i WISH i could do the same but i have distaste for doing line work myself because i become obsessed with redrawing every single dot and it slows the process too bad.

as for painting, i’m completely omnivorous. i watch paintings every day while scrolling social media and i pick up on good artistic moves. if you went to a gallery with me, i’d regard every painting with interest because i’m crazy about picking apart the way painters work with shapes, patterns and colors. after all, composition is my favorite framework, i’m soooo anal-retentive about that. i would call Edward Munch the absolute GOAT in composition.

among my favorite avant-garde artists are Anselm Kiefer, Gerghard Richter, Basquiat, Egon Schiele and Marc Chagall to name a few.

my favorite genre by far is still-life. this is Horst Jannsen:

what truly influences me in real time is art that doesn’t usually have an author’s name pinned to it or this very name is not relevant because the individual artist is a part of tradition. i’m talking about murals, ritualistic objects, textiles, frescoes. i learned a lot from orthodox iconography and eastern christian miniatures. i’m big on East Asia’s buddhist and hinduist art and japanese graphics. i never miss brand new exhibitions at the local Eastern Art gallery.

like, this is my favorite artwork of all time, no cap:

the second huge source of inspiration for me is cinema and documentary photography. i straight up gather screenshots every time i’m watching a movie. in terms of visuals my favorite director is Zhang Yimou. his film “Raise The Red Lantern” is pretty much what i wish my art would look and feel like.

the second best would be Wong Kar-Wai and Paolo Pasolini. also Tarkovsky, i guess🤔

Hello, my friend. I am curious to know what good things Philip V has done for Spain.

Are there movies or shows about him?

What historical events do you wish to see if there are shows about him someday? For me, The Spanish War of Succession, his first years as king, and his struggles.

ah, i love talking about period dramas . I have been a bit sad lately so I am not very into tumblr . May answer later to answers to this post or dms. I think I have more stuff to answer in replies ? I should check out my notifications .

As for good things Philip V has done for Spain — not many, dont think so. I like him for his human side ( which is , to be honest , the most part of him because he wasnt either very interesed in politics , he had bigger conflicts by himself to bother on that stuff ) . I like him as a person but I know people do think of kings who didnt do stuff for their countries as traitors or lazy people . I dont think Philip V as a tyranical king , since he came to Spain he always had doubts and Alberoni and the princess of Urzins had to reassure him to keep being on the throne since he was 17 — which is interesting considering he will later abdicate the throne when his inner turmoil is too much for him .

I personally love french movies . I really like France as a whole so I really liked L'Échange des princesses ( I dont know its name in english , but I know its name in spanish is Cambio de princesas or something like that , I watched it on spanish and french ! Couldnt understand the spanish one tbh ) . It is really good I really really loved it . I love french period dramas I think they are just the best . This is genuinely one of my favourites period dramas . I am not good at summarizing stuff in english but it is about the french and the spanish court around the time Philip V abdicated the throne ( which does happens in the movie ) THE SCENES OF PHILIP ARE SOOOOO EPIC it makes me happy when i remember them . he is so peak . I really liked how they stylized him he did in fact had a big ass wig they didnt exaggerated it . They did a very good job portraying his character but I think he talked too much during the movie and he usually didnt talked that much IRL . He was very shy and anxious when talking to people . But eh it makes sense as he was mainly talking to family . I really liked him nonetheless . Louis XV , Louis I of Spain , some infantes and baby Charles III of Spain appear in the movie . There is also Liselotte !! The duchess of Orléans . I really love her they did such a good job at portraying her too . I LOVE THAT MOVIE I GENUINELY LOVE IT !! This is the only movie I have ever seen about Philip V but I know my spaniard gf likes this spanish series ? which is about people who travel around time as far as I know ? where he appears with a very cheap wig and there is also Isabel de Farnesio which is the star of the show . I dont really know about it but spaniards like it so I guess it must be good . Its called El Ministerio del Tiempo and I only know it because Velázquéz ( the painter ) and Blas de Lezo appear there and I wanted to watch it someday but I dont like this kind of shows . I do know about that one Netflix show La cocinera de Castamar but I dont like it when they use modern hairstyles for period dramas it gives off lazy vibes so I dont watch them . Its a pity cus I love George III but there is a netflix show about him which seems good but I cannot bear the thought of George III being a normal person . May kill myself later .

Shows I would like :3 — I love love love love love loveeee imagining shows and movies I am a cinephile . I have a letterboxd account where I share my elitist taste on movies . I am a boring person who watches very boring movies and love it . I dont know if you are into that kind of period dramas ? the more experimental ones ? like the ones of Albert Serra ( La Mort de Louis XIV , Història de la meva mort , Liberté ) or Ken Russell ( The devils , Lisztomania , Prisoner of Honor ) or Derek Jarman ( Caravaggio , Sebastiane , Edward II , War Requiem ) — I am also super into the ones produced during the USSR , mainly about Ivan IV ; but I am also into normal recent stuff like Mary & George ( I LOVED this one ) and Marie Antoinette ( the 2006 movie and the 2022 series ! I really like anything Canal+ produces ) and well the Napoleon movie . Was it released last year ? Ah I do also liked Jeanne du Barry but people think that one is lame . Not me tho . I loved Jeanne du Barry I am into anything french . After saying all of this yeah I would love a biography movie á la Jeanne du Barry or Marie Antoinette ( 2006 ) or Napoleón . Something that lasts 2 hours and that the public completely hates but I will like it nonetheless . Impossible to make . Impossible to produce . No one would buy this idea . But it lives rent free on my mind . I genuinely love all of Philip V s life iiiiiiiii it makes me so happy to think of him when he was young and then when he was an adult and then when he was just trying to die in peace . Good boy . Would give him a lollipop to cheer him up . AH WHAT WAS I TALKING ABOUT . Ah yes . Ehh I think how he comes to Spain and all the weird things that happen around him — which are a lot , surprisingly , and very weird ? Like I genuinely cannot BELIEVE Alberoni was made prime minister I GENUINELY CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW DID THAT MAN BECAME PRIME MINISTER I CANNOT UNDERSTAND — And so . Eh I think the war of succession would be very interesting yes . It would be a bit too sad . I dont think there could be any way to make that movie with a happy ending or a lesson . I think its a bad idea to produce . But I would love it but it would be a complete failure like Philip V himself ( I love him ) . Maybe I would add him to a Louis XIV series or in the last part of a movie of him , as Philip V himself is a very niche spot in history . Spain its very niche in itself . I dont really think it would ever be a Philip V movie as spaniards hate him , but I think there would be a very interesting opportunity for Isabel II of Spain or Charles V of Habsburg . I really like Ferdinand II of Spain I think they should make a movie about him and Isabel and Juana and Felipe I . Outside of Spain I want a Frederick the great biopic I DONT KNOW WHY THERE ISNT ONE OF HIM ?? ... like there is but its a nazi movie ( lol ) so its super historically innacurate . life is hard . kisses and my best wishes my friend will !! ask for period dramas to you too as i want to watch something lately

There is so much more i would do the Starscream like pick him up with my bare cold hands and shake him like the ginger girl from finding Nemo and force him to watch all Shrek movies while all stars from smash mouth plays in the back non stop. Baking him into a cake is also a great options and the salad spinner with him in is just a great way to stim❤️. Just aggressively making that thing turn around and around. i once broke a salad spinner as a kid because i did it so agressivly breaking the handle and making the spinner fall on the floor and partly breaking into pieces. I imagine Starscream just being a puddle at this point, if so then he goes right back in the jar and then i microwaves him because i wanna know what will happen. if nothing does i would bite his head (lovingly) and rattle him around like a dog with their chew toy, barking while doing so and run around on all four running in circles.

I would squeeze him like those stress toys who's eye pop out dramatically and then throw him on the wall and hope he would stick on it right above my bed, that way when i stare on the celling i can see him before i fall asleep ❤️. Bc he is so cool and awesome he should be the last thing i see when i go into dreamland and also the first thing i see when i wake up❤️.

With the others i can't say my thirst for pathetic meow meows oozes for them. Like Starscream has just this pathetic wet sock, crying in the rain while covered in the mud, hopeing you would take him back as a lover while, i will always love you, plays in the back and you just throw a shoe at him to make him go away. He doesn't tho and looks at you with those big silly eyes, you still take him back because there is just SOMETHING about him you don't find in others, kind of vibe.

He is so pathetic and loving, his dumb stupidity grin that melts your heart while his clownery makes you wanna put him in a potato sack where only his head peaks out and put him in the damp,cold, dark basement. He is so dumb and cute and ratty.

Soundwave is just straight up my loving husband that i would wife up and give all my love without the insanity. The Bot is already dealing with so much he deserves a break and a soft tenderly kiss on the cheek while i tell him how great he is. I would draw him like an old painter draws their lover and muse; full of grace and power, elegance that you don't see anywhere else. The paintings of the time where he still was by my side the only thing reminding me how he looks like while my brain slowly withers away. My mind forgetting how his voice filled my hears like a wonderful song and his touch like the warm rays of the sun. But my heart beating for him and knowing even if i forget how he looks like my it will still remember him. Writing love sick writing poetry about the fuzzy warm feeling i had in the past seeing paintings of this mysterious person i clearly knew in the past. Writing about his beauty that shines from the inside out. Watching the moon, thinking of his dazzling eyes feeling cold and lonely not having him by my side, wishing each day that he would finally be here to fall in love a second time❤️ (but your genius for the things you wrote down).

Same with shockwave, but i have to admit i really wanna bite his mono-boob while skedaddling on his body like an insect. My feelings for shocker is in between of soundwave and Starscream.

I wanna cling on his leg and try to shake him around (knowing it won't happen because he is a THICC BOY). he would need me to put me in those child dog leashes or cages to make me stop fooling around and chewing on him. I would probably just straight up gulp down one of his chemicals to mess with him not caring if i die or grow a third arm. I honestly hope i would be his Starscream ❤️❤️ Him observing me in my silly little jar while i lick the glass like stich at the beginning of the movie❤️

I would be the fluffy cat getting petted sleeping on the lap of the villain as they spin around to face the hero of the story.

I think it’s time to finally write my Madoka magica movie four theory thoughts

MxSquibby's Walpurgisnacht Rising theory thoughts

(Thoughts are based off my knowledge of the franchise so I could be missing vital info)

I think the big premise for this movie is showing off Walpurgisnacht’s lore or some info about her. and like usual she is going to disrupt Homura’s wish. Or In this case her world and probably force homura to make a choice.

by the logic of Homura’s wish.

Three peoples karmic destiny should have been cranked up to a billion since the timelines always converged the most around 3 people.

Madoka(who the wish was for) and her amount karmic destiny is why she was able to make the ultimate wish and become the law of cycles for magical girl kind.

Homura (who made the wish) increased her own amount of karmic destiny which is why she was able to split apart Madoka (and take her memories?) and rewrite the universe to her liking which essentially just what she did in her labyrinth, but with more production value and can change the entire universe and not limited within the confines of her labyrinth and witch magic.

I’m guessing Homura’s got Madoka in what I like to call “The Good Place Season 2”

Which light spoilers for that show ahead but

One of the main characters, Michael, traps Eleanor and the other humans within a time loop. Erasing their memories every time Eleanor figures out what Michael is doing to them. Repeating this over and over. Over 800(0?) times, with each time him slightly tweaking and changing things to try and get a different outcome of her not figuring it out.

I think this what Homura’s doing to an extent. We saw at the end of rebellion, how fragile Homura’s hold on Madoka’s memories was. However all homura really has to do is ground Madoka back down to homura’s rewritten reality and since a part of Madoka does want to stay on earth and live a normal life this helps her forget easily of her god hood. However this very fact is what will always make her remember in the end. If madoka truly starts to enjoy her life on earth, She knows deep in her SOUL that she sacrificed her normal human life for a cosmic duty of Saving magical girls so anytime she thinks to hard about it or just kind of realizes she should only being viewing the lives of normal people not interacting with them she will start to remember and become magical girl god again but homura will just grab her again and reset her memories and then rewrite the timeline. Starting once again… essentially... ANOTHER TIME LOOP. Homura’s favorite thing 😂😭

And I’m guessing Homura’s got to do this a lot. Like hundreds of times. And if sayakas around during one these moments she sure as hell is also going to remember homura being a “devil” so homura will have no choice but to rewrite the timeline again and again. With each time she’s most likely going to make slight changes to the world in attempt to make Madoka not remember. I think it’s why she remembers so easily at first. It was waaaay to similar to the thousands of timelines her and homura lived through (ultimate Madoka is aware of all the timeloops homura and her went through so following that similar time loop structure will probably make her remember faster so Homura is going to start changing things. Which is whyyy we see the girls in different costumes at one point in the trailer. (I think this is why in that old ass concept trailer we saw Madoka being a ballerina, one to resemble Madoka just being part of Homura’s elaborate play now but to show her trying normal human things. Homura's going to help her find her human dreams. Maybe madoka wanted to be a dancer. Then after that fails Homura probaby thinks if she can find a perfect scenario where Madoka find some sense of self on earth maybe she will stop remembering her godhood. Maybe Homura can finally live a full human life with her and watch her grow. Maybe Madoka being a dancer, a painter, a musician, a celebrity. Something right? Will stop Madoka from reaching her magical girl potential. Homura’s so obsessed with giving Madoka the life she shouldn’t have had to sacrifice. So she will try over and over to make her happy. To find the one scenario...timeline if you will, where Madoka will be truly happy within her rewritten world.

Which will be a fun way to show the girls in different scenarios that we usually wouldn’t see them in. So like cool new costumes!!! Like cool bandage sayaka is just one of Homura’s AU’s or a by product of one of the new timelines she has rewritten. And sayaka is probably going to have a bigger part. Idk why I just feeeel it. She has special secretary powers. I believe in her. We saw all that special treatment they gave her in S2E1 of the anime timeline of magia record. Bitches love Sayaka. And like Bebe also has secretary powers I guess lol. But she just wants to hangout with mami and eat cheeeeeeese (yoooo plagg and bebe would be besties)

but This movie is just explaining the 3rd girl who’s karmic destiny was increased by this wish and then background info cause we know like nothing about her…

Walpurgisnacht (the reason homura HAD to repeat timelines)

Walpy (for short) is going to put an end to this loop homura and Madoka are trapped in. Or at least change or add to it.

what is concerning is that Walpy’s karmic destiny was already extremely high to begin with for her to end up looking like that. So logically she should be stronger than devil homura, and the only reason she isn’t stronger than ultimate Madoka is because of the wish of Ultimate Madoka made to erase witches. But since madoka’s slightly nerfed at the moment trapped in Homura’s rewritten reality, no one’s actively checking on the law of cycles. Sure girls don’t turn into witches but without Madoka actively monitoring the cycle this might have given some version of Walpy enough time or power to form or to come back and interfere. So I’m guessing homura might have to choose between keeping her time loop safe (and live her fantasy life with madoka) or let Madoka out so she can defeat Walpurgisnacht from destroying the universe homura has tried gone so far to get control of…. Cause homura, at least historically can not beat Walpy lol. So i'm guessing Walpy will always come back to cause universal destruction unless madoka is back. So will Homura be able to let go of her love for sake of the universe? a choice between keeping her love down on earth with her or letting her go and accepting that she’s nothing more than a universal concept. But like Homura’s crafty. She could weasel her way out of this

I will say a crack in this theory is from my own understanding that Walpy is made up of many magical girls? So either we are dealing with many girls coming in or some fusion magical girl perhaps? Or I guess just one of the girls from Walpy would do right? Perhaps the first girl? Though we don’t know if this was an individual wish, and then she absorbed other magical girls/witches or like a group wish? Kind of like the hospital trio. Like you can do a group wishes I suppose.

ALSO another addition to my thoughts. Homura isn’t the Antagonist. Should state that. Kyubey is. And like i haven’t even talked about this fucker yet. (Well in terms of the franchise as a whole, guessing for movie 4 Walpy is our more traditinal antagonist (She also probably takes the form of homura at first to fuck with her, Why we see two homura's in the Movie Poster but thats just a theory lol) but He? little rat noy. Within Homura’s new world order. He’s Most likely just collecting all despair and probably just collecting and suffering with the weight of all negative human emotions and curses within a labyrinth. Like. She probably just making him and the hive mind know what it’s life to feel emotions, specifically all those negative ones you’ve been putting magical girls through for hundreds of years. But like he could be up to some fuck shit. He technically is like a robot made by an alien race, right? So like they could finally pull up on us or something and be like “what have you done to my robo rat sons, you fucks”

But anyway I’m rambling a bit now but homura isn't the antagonist because she pulls Madoka from the law of cycles for a multitude of reasons, she states it’s for her love for Madoka. Which yes that is true but homura also understands Madoka should have never had to make this wish. The flower field scene conversation in rebellion is what makes homura realize this. Madoka is a normal girl, she just never got the time to figure herself out or to figure out normal human dreams. She was a young naive girl, where in many timelines used her wish to save a cat or make a cake. Because at first glance being a magical girl is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you don’t pass up. So she never got a shot at a real life when she should have. Madoka never wanted to leave behind her friends and family. She loves them. Like the girl don’t got much That’s like one of her core traits, she loves her friends, is a great daughter, and a great big sister, love cute things, is pink like 😭😭 But Madoka was just another cog in the magical girl machine but because of Homura’s wish it gave a Madoka a chance to look at the whole machine and see what the fuck has been going on. So Madoka, with no real dreams or goals, but is given the opportunity and explicitly told by the evil rat himself that she could make literally ANY wish. So when she sees everything and realizes she has the unique opportunity to save all magical girl kind from their souls being tortured for all eternity until murdered by another magical girl well no shit she HAS to make this wish. She doesn’t have any other choice in her eyes. To badly paraphrase Kyoko. "Something something if you have a loving family and good food on the table why on earth would you sacrifice that to be a magical girl? but who knows maybe one day you’ll be backed into a corner and you’ll HAVE to make a wish. If that day comes something something I guess i can approve of you being a magical lass"

So like. Is it fair? Ya know. All this is Kyubey and some alien race’s fault. Why should these girls have to suffer because of him. Who cares about the heat death of the universe. Let it burn, because if torturing magical girls is the only way of keeping it alive then fuck the universe. Like Madoka shouldn’t have to sacrifice her human life to save all these girls from suffering because they shouldn’t be suffering. They shouldn’t be turning into witches. Like 😭 and homura doesn’t think it’s fair that Madoka should be the one to make this sacrifice to save magical girls because Madoka wouldn’t have even been able to make the ultimate wish if not for homura’s wish but like also homura shouldn’t have been turned into a magical girl herself like it’s all fucked and idk what the end would even look like?

So Like a happy ending would be getting revenge on the RAT kyubey… and like idk. I don’t think that’s happening. Like if you want a happy ending for these girls I believe it falls within our little anomaly timeline. Which I like to believe the magia record game timeline is held within a phone. (Cause get it, it’s like a gacha game we play on our phones lol.) and when Madoka touched the anomaly timeline at the end of arc 1? Now the record phone screen is cracked 🫨🫨

I don’t think we’ll get a horrific or completely tragic ending but it will probably be bittersweet or mixed emotions. (Would LOVE TO BE WRONG, GIMMIE HAPPY) But also we won’t see the end end to this franchise for a hot minute lol. Like I’m pretty sure this is technically be advertised as the 4th movie. Though more like the second movie but I guess the movie versions of the anime do count I guess. Idk. The first two movies are fine, best part is just some updated animation and new yuki Kajiura tracks… but yeah i don’t think it’s the final movie.

Now what like actually happens? Fuck if I know. I’m still half expecting mayabu to find infinite iroha and make her pop in to save everyone cause idk. Is homura realllllly gonna let Madoka go. Ya know? Like she’ll probably try to control Walpy or fight her for a hot minute before even considering of letting Madoka go again.

Okay I feel like I covered all my brain theories about the movie... for now… Idk if I explored or finished every thought. I know I be yapping. And I have adhd so And I can YAP about Madoka and then immediately forget where exactly I was at in my Madoka thoughts.

Imagine how more I could yap if I read the wraith arc. (It’s truly laughable how I’ve read all of arc 1 and the other story with it, most of arc 2 (I skimmed early bits so I could catch up faster, then end of arc 2 was happening and I wanted to be a cool kid and read it asap) quite a few events, and the early chapters of scene 0 (now behind lol) BUT NOT the wraith arc. And I know I could pull it up so easily lol. Hell I read the event where ui went back in time to see fart but not the wraith arc I- I read Christmas strings but i wont take my lazy butt to read manga of my fave series within like kind of main timeline. Like i know i dont need to read but I need to read it. cause having a better understanding of Ultimate Madoka's universe and how wraiths work would be cool. and maybe one of these days ill read another story but idk... Think id rather read tart or Oriko first lol

but yeah i've got to stop myself of this post will never end. I'll prpbably re-read it tomorrow and add edits lol
