Watching Mikoto's magical girl story and about a third of the way through it thus far? I'm enjoying it. I haven't seen Hanna pop up yet, but I had some thoughts.

Something I rather like is the way it plays with the theme of a personality based in mirrors. Mikoto wants to be loved so bad. She wants to be thought of, appreciated... understood. But she's so afraid of being seen and being judged that she doesn't let people see her at all. She hides herself behind lies and a positive cheery demeanor because she's terrified that people will get a look behind the curtain and judge her for it. And she doesn't want that.

She's afraid of not finding love, so she settles for being liked by everyone instead. And to do that, she has to get rid of her personality, becoming what other people want to see instead-- a mirror.

Of course she doesn't find the salvation she's looking for in this. People don't like her. They like what they see. They like what she reflects... But that means she's never herself. And thus it doesn't matter when she forces people to love her through magic-- they can't. Because she's never herself, and those people never get the chance.

It strikes me that the first time we see Mikoto force a person to view her as their daughter through magic, they were already opening up to her about their own loneliness and offering Mikoto a meal and a chance to open up. But Mikoto doesn't see this. All she sees is an opportunity to force acceptance, never realizing it was right there to begin with, and she ruins any actual chance of the bond she's been searching for.

I can relate a little to this, especially when I was younger. There's a joke about people pleasing: "yeah you're a people pleaser, but how many people have you actually pleased?" Which is funny, but I think it kind of ignores the truth-- people pleasing isn't based in a desire to be liked, but out of a fear of being disliked. And that's something I can see in baby Muffin and in a bit of Mikoto thus far.

And as sad as it is to see a person so afraid of others that they kneecap themselves, I think this magical girl story (thus far, again I haven't finished it yet) does a good job showing the pain a person feels while also showing the very real negative side of it: this is ultimately a form of manipulation. Granted-- this is a very literal case because Mikoto can magically mind control a person. But we even see it in the beginning, where Mikoto is lying to people and presenting herself as cheerfully and neutrally as possible to be liked. These little lies are manipulations to keep yourself as safe and liked as possible.

But we see how it hurts her too. The first set of parents she mind controls doesn't make her happy, because they are forced into loving her... loving a person who doesn't actually exist. They make her greasy food that Mikoto doesn't like and talk about hobbies that Mikoto doesn't have. This is, again, based in mind control-- I assume that the parents are talking about a child they had in the past-- but I think it demonstrates the pitfalls of becoming a human mirror. You might make people like you, but they don't like you. And it won't make you happy. Every time they compliment you, every time they do something for you... you become more and more aware of the disconnect that exists between the person you are and the person you're pretending to be.

Guys. Not to be dramatic or a crazy theorist (who am I kidding, i clearly am) but

I think Exedra takes place after Walpurgis Rising (or inside some pocket dimension created by it)

This all happened because my mentally ill ass was like: "mmmh, I remember Mami's swimsuit variant having a way uglier costume top..." while watching the new Exedra unit release, so I went to check and, guess what, Mami DOES have a different costume top! Since the new wnk trailer dropped as well I went and rewatched the older ones... And started noticing some very suspicious details. We all know by now that in the upcoming movie our girls will be wearing slightly modified versions of their costumes... And the point is that the summer variants of the holy quintet that we can see so far have liiiiittle details recalling those same costume changes! Let me illustrate:

Mami's the most egregious one, having the same cut and buttons, even having a yellow undergarment under the white "blouse"

Sayaka's one is pretty noticeable as well! Just look at her sleeves (or lack thereof). Plus if we want to look into the most stupid details too I think they changed the pattern on the bottom half to match Oktavia's music theme

Madoka's one instead is almost invisible, but if you look closely the pattern on her "belt" is almost exactly like the one on the new outfit's skirt! I also think there's something going on with the more yellowy colors and the little frill on her chest.

Whew! That sure was a "theory"... Knowing how meticulous the madomagi crew is with details I know damn well these are not coincidences. Please let me know if you found this interesting and PLEASEEEE TALK TO ME ABOUT STUPID MEGUCA STUFF MORE PLEASEEEEE

Witches, Bros, Nonbinary Hoes…. Walpurgisnacht Rising (Walpurgis No Kaiten) is almost here!!!

And can I just say, look how fucking biblical this movie looks! Such a gorgeous reference to the “Creation of Adam” and god, look how beautiful this is. It feels like a renaissance painting. Really hammering in the Gerter/Faust references. I really need this poster hung up on my wall immediately. Such a work of art.

We’ve gotten so much new information from just a 30 second trailer. Now it’s theory time!!!

I think all the phones surrounding Madoka (A lot of phone imagery in this movie- I think communication or the lack there of is going to be a huge theme of the film) will be the Magical Girls she can’t save due to being cut from the Law of Cycles attempting to reach out to her for salvation.

It seems like Madoka will be on a trip to figure out who she really is while Sayaka is investigating the truth about Witches. Showing Octavia bursting out of her eye, it seems like her wrappings are hiding her “true” form.

And we finally got to see the fully designs for the Holy Quintet, and god they look SO GOOD. Don’t get me wrong, I love their OG designs but these designs really feel like they’ve grown and changed in this new world. Seeing the new magical girls as well is so hype! They’re definitely the girls from the concept movie! My theory is that orange-hair is bear girl/quitterie! She seems to be working alongside orange hair and Kyubey, potentially being swayed to aid Kyubey in whatever evil deeds it has planned. While Green-hair seems more focused on Mami from what I gather from the trailer, and she’s seen threatening? Madoka with Paola’s familiars. I did initially think that green-haired was Gertrude but now I’m not so sure. She has yellow ribbons in her outfit so perhaps she’s Candeloro? I have no clue but I’m excited.

Sayaka is facing the horrors TM while Mami is simply ✨vibing✨

I really think we’ll see some different worldviews come out between the different members of the Quintet. Keep Nagisa safe at all costs!!!

Also- Amalgamation Girl & Walpurgisnacht have been incredibly absent to these most recent trailers. From the subbed audio we see Homura in her new Magical Girl outfit talking to some calamity and naming is “Walpurgisnacht” and I can’t wait to see the potential formation of Walpurgis.

Also, Magia Exedra News! So many gifts and quality of life updates to the game, really making it go bigger and better. I was able to pull Doppel of Silence- Iroha (Yay!) and I’m hoping to pull Summer-Mami. Really happy the Scene 0 pt.1 has been added to Main Story as well!
