puella in somino (girl in a dream) is homura’s theme and you could just leave the title’s meaning at how the viewer is first introduced to homura through madoka’s dream. but if you look closer, dreaming is associated with homura throughout the series, not just in the 12 episode series. in the flower scene in rebellion, homura presents the events of the shows’ 12th episode as an awful dream. later in rebellion, homura’s reality that she unconsciously created for madoka is referred to as a dream reality. in “your silver garden”, which is the ending theme of rebellion, the narrator sings “the dream in my arms has locked away the lies and grief of a kind person”. this is a reference to how homura rewrote reality again to keep madoka from suffering. then, in the new movie’s latest trailer, the final line was “and so, let the curtain rise on tonight’s dream.” the motif of dreaming in this series is used as a means of finding both hope and escapism (2/2)

Since a trailer for the next Madoka movie was announced a few days ago, I wanna do some madoka screenshot redraws to celebrate because I was waiting for this moment for so long and because I wanna draw my favorite magical girls-

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion is literally just the Nutcracker

its christmas time so i'm sharing somthing thats been banging around my skull for the past 4 years.

So this movie right?

you know how it all goes, but theres somthing i discovered that i have never seen (and trust me i've looked very hard) anyone mention about the imagery used in this movie

so to start, we all know by now that this series loves to use old fairy tales as source material, the most obvious being Sayaka and the little mermaid stuff. But for years and years the one thing that always stumped me was Homura and all the tooth imagery

what the hell did that have to do with anything? Well years ago finally i found stuff online about her Witch form once being able to crack nuts but then losing its jaw and so on and was still like what does that have to do with anything?

nutcracker? what. does. that. have. to. do. with. anything But heres the deal friends and neighbors:

The nutcracker story most of us know? Its the ballet right? But did you know that play is based on a story?

this is the true Nutcracker fairy tale and the one that the Madoka series is drawing inspiration from. Why does this matter? Because the play leaves out the depressing as hell origin story of the nutcracker, how he got his curse from trying to save the princess, and how she cast him away once she was cured and he became ugly. The whole thing parallels Madoka's and Homura's story: Hom being the nutracker and maddy the princess, Hom going back in time again and again to "crack" fate and save Madoka, Mado becoming the Law of Cycles (princess being cured) and "abandoning" Hommy

Crazy thing, i actually knew this original story, i just didn't know it untill i started doing research. It was in a movie from the 90s that used to be on the disney channel every xmas! I just always thought this segment was created wholesale just for this one movie!

so having explained all that, we get to what this post is really about:

and how the movie is fucking jam packed with christmas imagery, they just hid it really really well

Baseless speculation time:

Given how much focus Homura will obviously receive, it would be interesting if we end up with a reversed situation from the anime. In the sense that Madoka is there, not the central focus, but popping up in tense and opportune moments in the narrative with us none the wiser regerding her thought process...Only to be revealed she's been regaining her memories for a while now and has been acting undercover as not to scare off Homura and approach her peacefully
