Here's something that occurred to me about The Rebellion Story.

When Homura first begins to emerge from the illusion and notices that something is off, the person that she confides in and goes to for help isn't Madoka, the center of her universe.

Nor is it Mami, the team leader and the one whom you'd expect a mindwiped Moemura to turn to for advice.

It's Kyoko.

Now, in a vacuum that makes sense. In the show, Kyoko was the one who Homura respected and trusted the most (albeit graded on a curve here) and had the least amount of beef with.

But this version of Homura wouldn't know that. Her memories were only just starting to reemerge. So why would the team's introverted new member go to the scrappy and boisterous mid-range melee fighter who was basically just the girl dating her crush's childhood best friend? I mean, I'm sure they got along, but I can't see them hanging out on their own.

Well, Homura tells us why. It's because Kyoko's behavior is most at odds with her returning memories and perceptions.

Now, let's examine that for a moment.

The Kyoko that Homura originally knew during the timeloops was a jaded darwinist who had spent two years locked in survival mode thanks to the trauma of what happened to her family.

This Kyoko wasn't like that. While I'm sure the tragedy was still taken into account, this Kyoko had a strong support structure of friends who loved her. She had a regular home now. She had regular meals. And, as my KyoSaya loving heart must point out, a caring girlfr-roommate. Yeah.

Anyway, that means that this Kyoko had returned to what I presume to be her actual personality: that of a happy go lucky goofball who loves spending time with her friends and lives for the moment. She's not stupid, as a lot of depictions tend to make her, but she is still quite silly.

So all that to say this.

Kyoko actually being happy was so at odds with Homura's perception of the world that it cracked her out of her own self-imposed illusion.

And I can't decide who that is more tragic for.
