it rlly is so strange and confusing to me when ppl say jack is canonically a child/toddler or has the mental age of one. did you guys miss the entire apocalypse world war he personally led with Mary? or the community church girl saying that he’s hot? did you just not watch optimism altogether? It’d literally take too long to list all of the traumatic events he experienced that would never have happened if he was actually a baby but I really thought another character blatantly saying he’s hot would’ve been theeee most obvious sign he’s an adult?????? what is the thought process like genuinely. it’s like this entire stupid argument only exists between babyjack ppl and People Who Actually Watched The Show it’s fucking annoying . Methinks,,, if there is no canon indication (in this case the very fucking opposite) of a character being a child, and all the arguments beyond their age that clearly doesn’t matter in universe consist of an autistic trait they express … methinks there is some ableism here that nobody wants to admit to

like i see people say stuff like “rei is a deconstruction of the idea of like the perfect girl in a male gaze-y way” and and i'm ready to agree until they go “it’s because she’s creepy and weird and bad!” like no. rei's a deconstruction of misogynistic ideas of womanhood because they’re ideals forced upon her that damage her, not because she’s in any way “creepy”. like, the fact she’s a fourteen year old girl who was basically used as a substitute wife by her father bc she looked like his own dead wife is not something that is meant to make rei look bad like holy shit.
like both rei and asuka are very obviously like. showing fantasised and misogynistic ideas of an idealised woman don’t work irl yeah. shinji's misogynistic view of them is wrong. but that’s not because rei and asuka are bad people it’s because like. “fourteen year old who's flirty and seductive” and “fourteen year old who's a quiet obedient object” are major signs of abuse and trauma and anyone actually acting in those ways at that age clearly isn’t normal. asuka is desperate for attention in any way she can get it, even unhealthy and dangerous ways. rei is at the very least I has a weird pseudo-incestous enmeshment filled abusive relationship with her father, even if she's not actively being sexually abused. asuka is seeking support, rei is a grooming victim. these are not things that are flaws in their character the entire point of subverting the expectations is to show how those expectations are unhealthy to rei and asuka like. god.
#like. negative fucking media literacy.#like. rei and asuka show signs of abuse in ways very normal for teenagers#every one of the Children in Evangelion is a victim and they react in messy ways#the point of that isn’t to show that they themselves are bad. it’s to show how trauma fucks you up#like none of them are bad people! they do fucked up shit bc it’s normalised to them!#people will just centre rei and asuka’s trauma around shinji and then call the show misogynistic for that like.#woah pal. there’s issues in the show yeah but i think that’s more an issue on your end buckaroo.#like their trauma interacts with him. and his trauma interacts with them. bc the show is literally about human's influences on each other#like the human instrumentality project isn’t there to just be funny it’s a thematic conclusion???#and also like. it’s comparing and contrasting all threes trauma to understand exactly how they got shaped the way they are.#just. think about the show you’re watching. please.#rei isn’t creepy she’s a schizophrenic abuse victim who's probably done the least screwed up shit out of the main cast#shinji isn’t a loser he's a heavily mentally ill young boy cracking under the pressure of toxic masculinity and having his boundaries erode#until he's unable to even respect the boundaries of others and recreates his trauma for a desperate attempt at control#asuka isn’t like. okay i mean she IS a bitch but literally so is every thirteen year old ok.#and it’s bc she fucking despises the vulnerability being kind shows. she despises herself and is overcompensating bc she’s scared and 13#like. god.

Just saw a post saying that Agatha had no reason to be angry and she is a terrible person for being angry at Rio…
Because…
Her child died.
Media literacy is dead. Jac’s work shouldn’t be talked about by people who make takes like ‘how dare Agatha be angry at Rio when her child died and Rio didn’t even go to Agatha to comfort her when she woke up! How dare she!!!!’ (This is a simplification. I shouldn’t have to put that because it’s obviously sarcasm and an oversimplification but… like I said… media literacy is dead and people can’t read context so-)
Note: before people AGAIN take what I said out of context: this is a complex situation. If you can’t see both sides then you shouldn’t be watching this show. The WHOLE point is that in their relationship they are both to blame and not to blame at all. Agatha was a grieving mother. She lost her child!!!! Literally the only thing that has loved her and been there constantly. Rio loves her more than anything but she isn’t. Always. There. That was shown. Agatha clearly wanted something to pour her love into all the time and not be alone
Rio shouldn’t have been pushed away and blamed for it. She was doing her job.
But to diminish Agatha pain completely to support Rio’s side is bollocks. I don’t have kids but I will say this: only people who don’t have kids will make that take. Because to lose a child must be the WORST pain a parent could ever experience. And she had the double barrel of guilt that her body failed her in growing him and not being able to save him due to her destructive magic. DOUBLE the pain.
And then a wonderful point my friend (a parent) brought up: Rio wasn’t there when Agatha woke up or when she buried him. It would be a VERY different story of Rio was there to support her and be with her. Yes Agatha would have been furious but she would have every right to be. But if Rio stayed and comforted we would have a very different story on our hands 🤷‍♀️ sorry but that’s the truth. Rio probably thought she was doing the right thing. Like what some friends do.
When I went through a terrible situation, my friends (who weren’t really friends but that’s not relevant) didn’t contact me or check up saying ‘well I thought you’d want to be left alone’.
No.
No one wants that.
Including the witch who has been left alone again and again. If Rio had stayed for when she woke up it would have been VERY different. (And I can’t think of a reason she didn’t. If anyone can apart from saying ‘doing her job elsewhere’ which to me is bollocks because she could have spared time. She had time to travel the road so that’s not gonna work on me when the love of her life lost their/her child)
So yeah… diminishing the main characters pain is… I’m not even gonna make a joke, fucking mental. Both can be wrong and both can be in pain. Rio lost Agatha. Agatha lost her child and Rio. Both are tragedies

i’m genuinely so tired of the absolute lack of media literacy (and common sense, honestly) from the ppl who say/genuinely believe that gon doesn’t have any insecurities, mental issues, or stuff like that.
i’ve literally heard someone say he doesn’t have the same insecurities as killua, or that his aren’t “as bad” as killua’s, which also isn’t true.
some ppl seem to believe that killua is the only (or more) “mentally ill” one in this duo, when that couldn’t be further from the truth. dare i say that killugon wouldn’t have even become friends and so deeply bonded the way they did if gon were completely mentally stable or “normal” in the first place. 💀 who else was gonna match killua’s freak?
plus, u seriously think a kid who is completely and genuinely mentally stable and “fine” would have had the breakdown that gon did in chimera ant arc? the entire point was that all of his insecurities and his pent-up/prior/current trauma and anger and pain and all of that were absolutely BREAKING him from the inside out.
plus, genuine question, what the fuck abt gon screams “mentally stable” to you?? 😭 the kid literally attempts suicide and/or harms himself (sometimes intentionally and even when it isn’t intentional, he’s still very reckless/careless w his own safety and life) fairly often just to reach his goal, bc if he can’t reach his goal of meeting ging, if he can’t prove himself to the man who abandoned him as a baby and if he can’t be strong and good enough, then he isn’t even worth being alive.
… and some of you rly believe this kid is okay?? 💀 you must have literally watched this show w ur eyes closed.

The Castlevania: Nocturne discourse is stupid
It’s not that Castlevania Nocturne is a perfect show. Not by any means. It has a lot to criticize.
But it also has a lot to praise and grapples with historical AND still relevant issues unapologetically in a way you rarely see in media.
And yet discourse has been so, so stupid.
Why are there gays?
People angry about gay characters, as if vampires aren’t inherently gay as hell. Look at them! Do vampires scream “tough, gender conforming dude bros”? Or Christian good boys?
No! They’ve always been gender bending, rich and bitchy little deviants who will fuck and eat anything.
Annette bad!
People upset a black lady character exists and is allowed to be angry after having escaped literal chattel slavery.
Even though she isn’t some pandering palette swap, she is organically relevant to a story set in the French Revolution dealing with themes of oppression and class.
Richter is a weak soy boy bitch! The downfall of masculinity! Other fragile bullshit!
People upset our protagonist man has realistic PTSD from watching his mother be violently killed right in front of him as a small child.
He represses himself, goes with the flow, and doesn’t lead for himself. Still he is brave and skilled until he is triggered and set on a path to rediscover his agency and true potential. A story of overcoming not with physical strength alone, but with spiritual and mental strength as well.
What do they call such a fleshed our character?
“A little bitch who needs women to boss him around”.
I just…?
Is media literacy THAT friggin dead?
Is it really?
Or is everyone only half-watching the show while on their phones?
I can’t even begin to explain how demoralizing it is to see so many people so upset about mere aesthetics while completely missing the point.
In conclusion…
Nocturne’s pacing is whack and the 3D animation can be choppy at times, which is all the more jarring when the animation gets smooth and gorgeous. Almost as if they’re skimping out on some of those other scenes to save budget for the big set pieces.
Still worth the watch.
There’s an Aztec vampire that can turn into a giant feathered snake and is generally against all factions and just wants to live his best life and I never thought my werewolf-named self would relate to a vampire of all things, but I love him.
Sorry, Richter.

jackie is a mean girl and i don’t get why people defend her nasty ass. girls like her who think they’re pretty so they can do anything piss me off then they all jump in to defend each other for shitty behavior. watching you do that tells me exactly who you are.
WOW! What a thing to say to a stranger!!
The bigger person in me would probably say clearly you’re hurting and that’s making you decide to be just awful and I hope you heal BUT I had a killer month so she’s actually not home today and instead you get my honest reaction, which is probably fine since you sure gave me your unfiltered opinion!!
Jackie isn’t a mean girl. It’s not even a matter of opinion, it’s a matter of who can pay attention to a fucking show and who cannot pay attention to a show and dives into their own stereotypes and throws them around and covers the text with their own bullshit.
You can have a LOT of different views on Jackie (and any other character!) and they can fall into the purview of differing interpretation (I have a lot of specific reads on her character that I know are not popular opinion and I don’t think people are wrong for disagreeing with!), but I’m sick of pretending like this black and white, jackie is an uncaring cruel mean bitch line of thinking is a valid opinion. It’s just fucking not, like you’re just making shit up at this point. And that’s okay! View media however you want! If you want to imagine that Jackie is a mean girl then that’s your right!
But to come into peoples asks and onto their pages and just spew shit like this is suuuuuch bullshit. And I’ve hesitated to straight up tell people they’re wrong before because that really isn’t my style, but you know what? This was fucking mean and WEIRDLY personal and I’m tired, so you come to me with this shit from now on and I will simply tell you that you are fucking wrong and you have really fucking bad media literacy <3
(If you have these opinions on your OWN BLOG AND NOT IN MY ASKS WHILE YOU COME FOR ME PERSONALLY IN THE SAME BREATH I will see it and think damn I couldn’t disagree more, but I won’t comment on it like that because it’s YOUR SHIT, does this make sense to everyone, do we see the distinction?)
Anyway, you don’t know shit about me. And I don’t know shit about you but since we’re making assumptions here, maybe you were treated poorly by someone and you can’t stop labeling other girls and women unfairly based on that experience, but tbh the way that you are so locked onto hating this teenage girl character and so willing to tell me that you know “exactly who I am” and imply that I’m a “nasty ass mean girl with shitty behavior” really leads me to believe that whoever you are projecting onto Jackie might not have even been mean to you! because you seem to be pretty damn comfortable being the mean one yourself!
Anyway to anyone who is reading this, please don’t do this to people! I know it’s just the internet, I know people can turn off anon asks, I know I know. But also? Sometimes people are having really bad days and something like this would really fuck with them and we are all capable of NOT doing this shit! It’s actually sooo easy to not be an asshole in someone’s messages <3 and if someone has sent you shit like this, just know that it says literally nothing about you and everything about the person saying it, so try your best to just brush it off and carry on! <3 <3 <3

Your responses to the Stolas/Blitzo debate are… odd. I agree that Stolas is being hypocritical, overly judgmental, unfair, and ignorant of his own behavior- but isn’t that the point of the show? Blitzo’s also messing up in a lot of ways, he takes jokes/insults too far, he has problems respecting boundaries, he’s acting unfairly aggressive and apathetic. But that’s the whole point of the show, isn’t it?
We are only halfway through season 2 of a 3-4 season show, which means we still have sooo much further to go in the story. Therefore, of course the characters are still flawed. If Stolas and Blitzo were perfect and weren’t being flawed the story would be flat and boring- or if Blitzo was the only one making mistakes. Then there would be no show to watch, no?
Also, I feel like, if Blitzo’s allowed to be ignorant, narcissistic, and intentionally hurting others due to his insecurities, trauma (like being overly rude bc he’s defensive, disrespectful of boundaries) AND he’s allowed to make mistakes on his path to healing and redemption-
then so isn’t Stolas? Stolas also had a hard upbringing and an abusive marriage, so there’s many things he flawed in (like expressing proper intimacy, or properly self-reflecting). He’s not as far as Blitzo right now in his journey to be better but he will get there- as Vivzie has said herself. There’s still AT LEAST one and a half more seasons, in which will contain Stolas’s self reflection.
This is also why I think you might have the perspective that the SHOW itself sets Blitzo up as the bad guy. Because 1. Anyone with proper media literacy can also see Stolas’ flaws but more importantly 2. The show is about Blitzo, and at the moment is focused on Blitzo. Therefore we are seeing every side of him, the good the bad and the ugly. We haven’t entirely begun Stolas’ arc (we’ve like… dipped our toes) and thus the show isn’t putting a main focus on anything about him- his mistakes OR his healing. But those things will start to unravel as this season goes on and into the next season.
If you have the opinion that the FANDOM hates on Blitz? Well I can’t really help that, besides saying idk what side of the fandom you’re on. My side very much stays in the middle and admits they are both wrong.
I just feel you’re being too harsh on Stolas and aren’t really seeing the show for what it really is: HALF of a story about two equally flawed individuals.
Thoughts?
You think I'm too harsh. I will be even harsher. The reason why I am harsh on Stolas is because the crew doesn't realize how much Stolas is fucked up as a person and how realistically in life Blitzo would get the heck out of their with that crystal and leave. Yep, no being gaslighted into a relationship based on a facetious grand gesture but just leave that unapologetic bird. The guy said he was trying to make things right but he never properly apologized nor showed he truly understood the gravity of power he had on Blitzo. Also most of all he doesn't understand how condescending and bigoted he was and even when Blitzo spells it out the doubles down and claims Blitzo is the bigoted one. It's projection on his part and shows he still hasn't learned anything while pretending he is. The problem is he doesn't have he narrative harshly hold him accountable. It doesn't try to correct his behavior but gives him new excuses to feel sorry for him as we groan at the narrative's favoritism towards him and how supposedly he's actually this great guy despite that erasing all of season one. Sorry, but Stolas is worse and the show refuses to admit it because they have fallen so in love with him. Also the guy should expect to instantly be forgiven and be sympathetic for it. That is what shows Bojack called out for which is feeling entitled to forgiveness after you didn't do anything to try to properly heal those around him while Blitzo gets wrecked for the same thing. The show is hypocritical on who it wants to punish and who it wants to reward. And it's rewarding a abuser who thinks he's the victim.

I never really believe genshin players would pass an IQ test until I saw a genshin stan commenting how Kaveh and Al-Haithem weren't POC men when compare to character like Xinyan, Candace, and Cyno.
Notice how they mention the characters with dark skin colors. And not their names.
The bar is low for their IQ.
Adding on to that lurkers would always like to see that wokjak meme about how fans were silent over Yasuke a Black samurai in Japan but complain over the whitewashing of Natlan.
And some of the Japanese responses I get over this Yasuke "debate" is that they wishes it was a Japanese protagonist. Yet if you watched the trailer you literally can play as Naoe a Japanese Shinobi. They literally forgot about her bc these dumb bitches were focus on the Black man in Japan.
At least when it comes to Ubisoft even though they took inspiration off historical events they still represented the culture properly. Even though it's a "fantasy" setting.
Holy shit no cause I saw THE SAME POST
How are you gonna be so… unintelligent to go “oh yeah Al haitham? Kaveh? White guy names.” Like no… no, you’re joking. Don’t even get me started on the “um! Dottore is from snezhnaya!” No he’s not. His name is Zandik, does that sound Russian? No. Like media literacy is dead with genshin fans sometimes, because… no, all the sumeru characters are not meant to be white. You look up the proper pronunciation of their names, and their origins and they’re OBVIOUSLY not white 😭 these people are gonna be saying the same shit witch natlan in a year, just watch.
The whole assassins creed thing, just… blows my mind too- cause I’ve liked assassins creed for years now, and like… isn’t… the point… to show diverse characters in diverse cultures with diverse narratives…? Like? Be so for real right now. Plus WASNT YASUKE A REAL FUCKING PERSON???? LIKE??? BAVAJAH???
That’s Ubisoft though, and Ubisoft has its issues- but like I find the same people complaining about the next assassins creed game are also mad about people giving hyv criticism for their lack of diversity. Jesus Christ too many fucking racists 😒

(This was gonna be really short but I found these topics too interesting sorry)
I was gonna send an ask on how I agree with the point of “fictional characters cannot be harmed” and how that goes into the “it isn’t aren’t harming yourself or others around you” rule of enjoying things. (I mentioned that since this blog doesn’t hurt anyone, though you can make an argument some creeps will take it too far, this blog isn’t one of those cases and it’s way too long to discuss)
But as I was scrolling I realized how fucking crazy it is to mean no one started ranting about the mild, probably accidental, racism in Dungeon Menshi. It was something so obvious to me that when I was watching the episode that first introduced the orcs I immediately knew that it was inadvertently racist and I’m shocked all of the rants against you focused on extremely petty and biased things instead of a very obvious (though still not a reason to get a whole show banned) reason.
Even then in the show, despite the stereotypes, it’s shown that the orcs were oppressed, are still undermined, and are trying to do what they can to survive. I haven’t Dungeon Menshi yet, but I wanted to comment on how people who rant against you yet ignore this obvious point against the show end up showing the fact that they don’t actually give a shit about being “woke” (sorry) or an actual activist or an ally to anyone. They just want brownie points.
Anyways sorry for the rant all the fandom vs illiteracy stuff got me in a talking mood. Keep being awesome 👍
There's a reason I started the Fandoms vs. Illiteracy Series, and It's expanded tag Fandoms and Media Literacy. I wanted to start discussions based on these essays because of the lack of media literacy and this performative activism.
Now, no one has explicitly brought up the fantasy racism in Dungeon Meshi. However, several characters were targeted in that big rant or list of characters someone wanted to be banned because they were blonde with blue eyes, even though a good chunk didn't have blue eyes. After all, every time they won, it promoted white-centric European colonial beauty standards. They used a couple of ridiculous terms along those lines interchangeably. It's a very long, extensive list that is just a giant wall of text I'm trying to transcribe into something legible because I'm organizing it based on fandom. Because I may have deleted the original message, but I took screenshots because it was that wild.
Now, regarding age, because of the crazy stuff people say and how some people take things too far. For proof of this, look at the polls with characters that are drawn in a particular moe style. So even though they're 30, they look 12. The comments and reblogs on those always turn into a dumpster fire and can turn very creepy. So, I will not be lowering the age below high school. There's just no way I would be comfortable in allowing that crazy to be unleashed on anyone younger than a high schooler, even though they're not real. Just the thought makes my skin crawl. I have an entire post dedicated to the crazy nicknames and tags people put on my polls, and they're hilarious. I'll give him that, but I'm not lowering the age. I've seen a million and one reasons why high school's my line. Now, I'm pretty lenient on what I will put in a poll, but I do have my limits right now. There are no mechs, no weapons, and no one under the age of 15 because that is the age of a first-year high school student in Japan. Other people or blogs may have different limits/rules and what they're comfortable with. But those are mine, and I make the rules

I’m scratching at the fucking walls as I watch another person villainize Alain and minimize what Lysandre did to him. I feel like what some people miss is how bad manipulation affects people, especially when they’re young. Lysandre manipulated Alain in a way where he couldn’t question him. Alain trusted and believed him, he wasn’t given a reason not to and we saw what happened if Alain even considered going against him. Lysandre made him believe that he was helping others by doing what he did, that if he followed his lead, people like Mairin and the professor would be safe and Chespie falling into a coma didn’t help Alain, but did help Lysandre further manipulate him.
I’m sick of watching people blame Alain for what happened, I’m sick of people blaming Alain for following Lysandre. He was manipulated to the point he started hurting himself. As small as the scene may feel, Alain punching the ground the way he did could’ve seriously hurt him and it was in response to how upset he was with himself for following Lysandre.
I feel like people blaming Alain for being manipulated have a very shallow understanding of manipulation and the issues it causes. Manipulation is a form of abuse and more people need to realize this. Alain was being abused by Lysandre and it honestly makes me sick when people fail to realize this.
(I just want to say that I am not talking about you. You obviously have a lot of love for him as a character and it shows in the way you talk about him and handle his character. I’m just annoyed with other PokeAni fans.)
Ilysm for this CAUSE OMG. LITERALLY. I COULDN’T PUT IT IN ANY BETTER WAY? Like I even get pissed when I remember he shows up with Team Flare in the intro as if he was some bad guy LIKE OH MY GOD. Genuinely if you think Alain takes part of the blame for everything that happened uhmm.. avoid interacting unless you want me to send laser beams to you through my screen ^_^
Like. I genuinely wonder what anime did they watch because it’s CLEARLY not Alain’s fault and HE ISN’T A VILLAIN? Lysandre used him. He lied, isolated and gaslit her into working for a “peaceful future” AND ALAIN COULDN’T HAVE KNOWN. QUITE LITERALLY. Look me in the eye and tell me Lysandre even showed him a minimal fraction of whatever the hell was going on in those laboratories. LOOK ME IN THE EYE AND TELL ME LYSANDRE EVEN BOTHERED TO SAY ANOTHER FRACTION OF THE TRUTH OF WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH MAIRIN. LOOK ME IN THE EYE AND- (shot down
THE POINT IS. People’s opinions on Alain are like my media literacy test for them ON EASY MODE ‘cause if you think she’s even PARTIALLY TO BLAME you literally did not understand a single thing about her character or arc or backstory. Rewatch the anime for me.
NOT YOU ANON BTW IT’S JUST HOW I TALK 💕

WARNING!!!! CONTROVERSIAL OPINION INCOMING!!!!!
tbh i’ve been reading posts online about tadc and i’m not trying to sound mean but like how…how bad are kids’ media literacy these days? like how bad has it gotten that you need someone to spell out to you that jax will clearly be more than just an asshole in the story?
like ok i’m not going to act like i’m super smart or anything because i’m not i literally used to rely on matpat to tell me the fnaf timeline (embarrassingly enough) but like Still. it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that jax isn’t just mean for no reason (IMO).
maybe i sound like an asshole which is the most likely case, and for that i apologise. i just find it so confusing and crazy that people are going absolutely ballistic talking about how jax is just a jerk and hates everyone because like—he’s clearly going to be a prominent character in the story. why the fuck would he be written so 1-dimensional????? it may or may not be revealed that he’s only like that for some super secret reason or something, or they might show that he’s “not all that bad” OR WHATEVER but the show is going to give him SOME development!!!! (i hope or else this show might just plummet to the bottom of my watch list with helluva boss and hazbin) it is so insane that some people on here truly believe jax is just a boring mean loser based on ONE episode…. i don’t even like him that much (i think his trope is too overused, he just feels like sans at this point) but even i don’t say all the shit some of you goober be saying 😭
ANYWAYS RANT OVER I JUST SAW A POST THAT WAS LIKE GOING IN DEPTH ON HOW JAX IS “NOT AN ASSHOLE” and i was so shocked to think that someone needed a step-by-step tutorial on how to have media literacy

every now and then i think about how, back when i was a teenager and the show was first airing and i was watching in real time, i didn’t really enjoy reading fic where sam was cursed to need to fuck dean, or stories where sam had feelings for dean first.
my reasoning at the time being that it was a foregone conclusion -- of course if sam was cursed and needed to fuck dean, needed anything from dean in order to not die, that dean would immediately and unquestioningly provide. of course if sam fell for dean, it didn’t even matter if dean reciprocated or not, he would stay by sam’s side and this wouldn’t break them apart, just get absorbed into their dynamic one way or another, because there was simply no universe in which dean rejected his brother. even if for some reason they didn’t start a sexual relationship, it would be fine.
and look, i was a teenager and a little uninterested in the layers of complexity there were to unpeel there, and how “will this break them apart” is not necessarily the only element of that conflict worth exploring, and in the 15+ years since then i’ve definitely come to enjoy every potential trope and examination of their dynamic and write them this way too.
but my point isn’t actually about the tropes that writers choose to explore, it’s that -- if you watch in real time without knowing where it’s all going, even to a younger viewer with some critical thinking skills but not a lot of media literacy, the first 3-4 seasons make very obvious that sam has more agency in his dynamic with dean than dean does, and that dean’s decisions are foregone conclusions in a way that sam’s aren’t.
(this is beautifully, necessarily challenged and complicated by the very back end of season 4 and the start and then progression of season 5, most especially their breakup at the start of s5, but that is such an extreme tipping point for them that it’s delectable in its horror and what if offers, and part of why those episodes are painful as hell but riveting)
and anyway i just find that fascinating, because i think it’s something many fans sort of forget in retrospect or something that gets washed out by more recent canon. knowing where the story goes and how the relationships develop can undermine our ability to keep crystal in our memories how they were at that point in time. we get retroactive memory interference.
and i think it accounts for at least some differences in fics written during that 2005-2010 era vs those written later, and for some of the discussions in fandom with different points of view. consuming the narrative slowly over years vs. binging it, watching while knowing where it’s going vs. not, re-watching vs. initial watching, etc -- all of it influences our experience of the story (let alone all of the other stuff like which characters we do or don’t identify with, etc).
which i think is kind of neat, and i like to try and sit back and reflect on my initial experiences of the narrative, because young and naive and media-savvy or not, those first impressions and interpretations in their raw, unfiltered form have a lot of value for me now, still, in understanding the characters and the story.

I had to watch this in high school health/gym one year and I will say that none of us gave a shit about it but a lot of adults around us treated this “documentary” as gospel when it came to healthy eating and it goes to show you what a lack of context/research/media literacy does to people. Yes, he did get sick from eating a shit ton of McDonalds. But also:
1) He was an alcoholic. Horrifically so. The doctor in the movie telling him he was bad off was because of his addiction but it’s edited so it looks like he’s talking about the diet in general.
2) He stated in the documentary that both he and his girlfriend were vegetarian and had been for years. He went from full on vegetarian to eating 2-3 meat based meals a day. That’s a huge change in diet. That’ll fuck up anyone.
3) One of the conditions of the challenge? Test? (I’m not calling it an experiment) Was that he had to say yes if asked to supersize (hence the title of the documentary) so not only was he forcing himself to eat meat after not doing so for years, he also willingly increased his intake. (He also for some reason included drinking pop as part of the challenge, which isn’t exclusive to fast food companies and this has nothing to do with anything just weird in my opinion)
4) I’m not a science guy. But even I know that if you want to conduct this sort of test, you have multiple test subjects and pick people who are actually healthy and don’t have any underlaying issues (such as the aforementioned alcoholism) so it doesn’t skew the results. A group tried to replicate this task and none of them got the same results as Spurlock.
5) If you eat any one thing for long enough, you will get sick. (Insert that Tumblr post about that guy that ate meatballs every day and then got scurvy.)
I’m also just genuinely convinced that this documentary made way for a lot of the diet shit that gets passed around on the internet now. Not just about fast food but just upped the ideals about dieting in general. One of the points about Supersize Me was that it was a diet of meat (specifically processed meat) that was making this guy sick, and after this got released I definitely noticed an uptick in the “meat isn’t good for you” sentiment and vegan alternatives started to gain more traction.
Rest in peace Morgan Spurlock and let us never forget that Super Size Me was an extremely poorly made and completely unscientific documentary that shouldn't be celebrated

bruh it’s infuriating how poor some people’s media literacy is
seeing a bit of a trend as of late with people being all “how come in heart of darkness the only sentient beings on this planet are the amigos and the master and vicious? this isn’t realistic and blah blah blah” (Mefudoka screaming in the background “I had a line of dialogue too you fucking idiot”)
Like I thought it was pretty fucking obvious that the Amigos are the only survivors of the “blight” (sorry I am so sorry) of spectre life spreading across the planet. And they’re like, one poor apple(?) harvest from becoming functionally extinct and they do not appear to have any children in their village and blah blah blah.
So to answer, the Master/spectres have (unintentionally or otherwise) done such a good job at eradicating all the natural life in that world that only this one village of flying creatures that live on a floating island and struggle to find food have survived.
what is with people who want to just completely make something new but insist on it being “HoD” because idk. Reminds me of the people who get into anything regardless of what it is and INSIST on shipping something. Won’t get into a media because it has “nothing shippable” and shit so they’re like writing yaoi about the two male characters that had the most dialogue together in some random old piece of english lit they have to read in school. WHAT.
Like why are people so scared to make their own thing? I can see why big media conglomerates are always making shitty inferior reboots and such but bro with a twitter account and a passion for a completely different form of storytelling too? What???
There’s an opportunity for prequel material that shows what the planet was like before this problem was so widespread. And it would be really cool to make species based off of the sick as hell skeletons you see littered around the world. Mostly draconian in appearance and BIG. But nope. it’s always wanting to add clutter to Andy’s relatively basic straightforward hero’s journey plot. what.
Also I’m going to really try not to go on a tangent about people and their criminally unfitting OCs but something I see a lot is people wanting to just throw furries into the mix.
Listen, I have a fursona. I partake in the furry art. But what in the fuck you guys. At this point make your own thing??? I am reminded of the weirdo with a bunch of really stupid ideas who literally would not stop spamming me in DMs and wouldn’t even wait a day for me to respond before spamming me more who had like this whole bunny man OC idea that I thought FOR SURE was an elaborate attempt at trolling me but apparently it was genuine!!!???
Apparently “if it doesn’t have furries it’s inferior” is ALSO a relatively common mindset a lot of people have and I know this because I was *kinda* like this in my “I won’t watch anything without a dog or a cool weapon on the cover” phase in childhood.
Idk I’m just frustrated and exhausted and pissed off by people with ideas that’d be cool on their own but suck balls and do not fit and would objectively ruin shit in a “too many cooks in the kitchen” way when jammed into HoD.
They always want to “make a reboot/remaster” too. Never a prequel or sequel.
You’d do numbers at disney. You should apply 😒

HELLO, IVE JUST FINISHED WATCHING WEDNESDAY
because i am the biggest dumbest nerd when it comes to the addams family: ive made a crappy list of why wednesday is everything i hoped for and more and why it is absolutely fucking perfect. spoilers.
im not entirely sure on how to start slow with this one so im getting right fucking into it. enjoy reading the disaster of my thoughts on this masterpiece:
AMAZING CASTING. jenna is incredible as wednesday, catherine and luiz are the perfect morticia and gomez, i adored seeing christina ricci KICKING ASS. gwendoline christie was amazing as weems, fred armisen as fester???? lost my shit he was so perfect. i don’t think there was a single cast member i wasn’t amazed with.
no genuinely i loved all of the nevermore students
fell in love w enid so fast omg i was rooting for her so hard her arc was so awesome (her and ajax are so cute too)
rip rowan you would’ve loved wenclair
THING!!!: its not the addams family without thing, and its especially not the addams family if thing isn’t being a little shit stirrer the whole time. perfect beautiful i love him A++
THE WEDNESDAY/PUGSLEY DYNAMIC WAS SO ON POINT they literally have the actual best sibling dynamic
i now know that you have not lived until you’ve seen wednesday addams stuck in a love triangle. she is not a character that you would expect to have a romantic interest but now in my mind she’s just beautifully a-spec and probably demiromantic. yes obviously i love xavier.
don’t get mad at me but i don’t ship her w enid that much?? at least not romantically but hey i would not complain if we had a polycule or qpr!!!
also it was genuinely so cute to see wednesday making friends like. why was i sobbing so much when she hugged enid. holy fuck.
THE DANCE SCENE. SHES AN ICON SHES A LEGEND AND SHE IS THE MOMENT
i am referring to both her actual dancing and ofc “they couldn’t even spring for real pigs blood. its only paint.” so real.
cant even stop myself from mentioning that jenna ortega looks very hot covered in blood which happens a lot in this series. like almost every episode. jesus fucking christ i am so in love with her.
i am a huge edgar allen poe nerd so i fucking adored every little reference to his works. also the idea that he was an outcast is so real to me.
speaking of outcasts: ngl definitely could’ve come up with a better name, “outcasts” just made it sound weirdly like some awkward teen high school drama but you get used to it
wednesday’s visions were so cool??? i loved the whole goody addams thing their interactions were really cool and god i just was not expecting that at all.
ok tbh it was really weird that her name was goody, since “goody” is the puritan equivalent of “mrs.” (its short for goodwife) so idk why they did that but ok i’m still here for it
honestly in general they do a really good job of keeping you guessing. i was suspicious about almost every single character throughout the whole series.
in retrospect i should’ve known tyler was gonna be an asshole from the start cause. i mean. his name is tyler. no offense to my tylers, but be real when have you ever seen a tv show character named tyler that wasn’t a douche. i’ll wait.
i’ve typed tyler too many times and it no longer looks like a real name
episodes are nice and long but i obviously wish the series was longer, but it was super bingable and i’m probably gonna rewatch it 3 million times until the next season inevitably comes out.
not to be dorky but i loved how every episode title was a pun w the word “woe”
i have really horrible media literacy in the sense that i overthink EVERYTHING so to me like almost everything in that was beautifully executed symbolism and maybe it was but when i say i lost my shit when i noticed wednesday stand on enid’s side of the room and fsr thats the only example i can think of rn BUT STILL
overall 5 stars 10/10 show i cant wait for more i love the plot i love the characters i love the cast i will be recommending it to everyone ik and more
