Wish you were sober by conan gray for any marauders era ship :) thank you!!
oooh i love wish you were sober!!
lets see how many references you can find :D
~~~~~
The bright, colorful lights blinded him.
The only reason he was at this party anyways was for Sirius.
It was always for Sirius.
Honestly, Remus was convinced he existed purely for the boy with the hair as black as his name. What else could have been his purpose?
So now here he was, standing in the corner of a room, a water made up to look like vodka in his hand.
He watched as Sirius drunkenly stumbled towards him, hand in hand with a random girl.
“Hey, Moony,” Sirius grinned, baring his teeth in an intoxicated smile. “This is Mary.”
“Hello, Mary,” Remus said, nodding curtly. “Why are you here?”
“Because Black over here won’t shut up about you, so I asked to meet you to see if you were as great as he says you are!” she giggled.
“How fun,” Remus said dryly. “I’m not all too interesting, trust me.”
“Oh, but you are, Moons!” Sirius sang, blowing him a kiss. “You’re the interesting-est person here! You’re great! Now bye!”
Sirius ran off, Mary in tow. Remus eyed the window beside him, wondering if he could slip out into the night and not be stuck in the same room as twenty people he didn’t know.
(If it was also because he couldn’t stand to watch Sirius kiss someone who wasn’t him, that was between him and the moon.)
—————
“Moony!” Sirius called over the blaring music. “Hi, can I go home now?”
Remus sighed at the state his best friend was in. “Yeah, c’mon. I’m driving.”
“Great! Thanks, Moons!” Sirius grinned. “Love you!”
It’s just the beer, Remus told himself. He’s just drunk. He doesn’t mean it.
But what if he does? A different part of himself asked. How would we know?
But he doesn’t. He’s straight.
Right. But what if-
Shut up.
Remus walked out of the door, Sirius in tow. He was saying a few goodbyes to the people he had befriended during that whole… situation.
They headed for Sirius’s Range Rover- one of the many perks of being rich.
Remus had the keys in his hand, as Sirius had handed them to him before the party, citing how he didn’t want to accidentally drunk drive and murder an ex or something.
Just as Remus was about to back the Rover out of the parking space, Sirius took his face in his hands and kissed him.
Fuck.
Remus pulled away from what seemed to be the first breath of air in his nineteen years of life. “Sirius, what was that?”
“I love you, Moony,” Sirius said dopily. “You’re just so pretty, I had to kiss you.”
“Thanks,” Remus said stonily.
Internally, it was like Sirius had dropped a bomb in the middle of Remus’s warring mind, leaving both sides reeling from the impact.
He was no longer sure of what to say or do.
—————
Soon enough, they were at Sirius and Regulus’s flat.
Remus got out of the car, waking up a half-asleep Sirius.
“Whazzit?” he asked, looking around. His face brightened when he saw Remus. “Hi, Moony!” he cheered.
“Hey, Padfoot,” Remus mumbled. “Come here, we’re gonna get you home.”
“Oh, I’m home? Thanks, Rem!”
“Yeah, of course.” Remus helped Sirius get upright, letting him lean on his lanky body as they walked up the driveway.
As they neared the door, Sirius giggled. He then turned so that his and Remus’s bodies were close together, and they were face to face.
“Thank you, Remmy,” he smiled, kissing him. “Can you stay for a bit? I think I might be lonely, since Reg is out with James tonight.”
And what was Remus’s purpose other than to make Sirius happy?
He was a weak, weak man, after all.
think about bellatrix x alecto. For a moment if you will please🙏
they could be the death eater power couple just imagine-
okay yes. love that. have not thought much about alecto but i can def see it. i'm big into quillkiller so i'm sorta imagining it starting as a rebound for bellatrix during first war and after she gets out of prison they start up again and get more obsessively and brutally into each other.
moonheavens' (wolfstar) fic recs, Nov 24
hello! since my last list of fic recs is now over a year old (Aug 23), I figured it's about time for a new one, especially on the back of the recent discourse about shouting about work you love, which I'm always happy to do.
so without further ado, here are some fics I have "recently" read and loved and whose praises I'd like to sing, very loudly. please do note this only includes wolfstar or multi-ship Marauders fics.
authors, if you want to be untagged, have your fic removed or have the one line summary changed, just message me.
all recs with ao3 links below the break <3
WIPs
All's Fair in Love and Trivia, by @cancerravenclaw ~75k, Explicit, Muggle. exes to lovers years after a huge, painful break-up. I've been eating this up with a spoon and re-read multiple times so far, it's soooo good. really hot ex-sex, yet also handles the complex emotions beautifully, and I love the group dynamics.
Shorter finished works (<30k)
The Barista, the Burglar, and the Sofa, by orphan_account 21k, Explicit, Muggle. summary reads "the story of how Sirius tries to seduce a man by slowly furnishing his flat" and.. that totally checks out. absolutely hilarious and very sweet, and I too would fold if Sirius Black bought me a bookshelf.
Wishes on Stars, by Quietlemonhush and @theresthesnitch 19k, Explicit, AU. Remus makes a wish upon a star and gains a friend. without spoiling too much, this one is a wonderful journey - so sweet, so beautiful, so poetic, so heart-warming.
After spending some time thinking about Peter Pettigrew, I’ve realized there’s a huge disconnect between how he’s portrayed in canon and how the fandom—especially within Marauders fanon—handles him. Let me preface this by saying, I get it. The Marauders era is filled with beloved, tragic characters like Sirius, Remus, and James, who are all charismatic in their own ways. It’s easy to frame Peter as the villain, the weak link in the group, because, well, he is the one who betrays them. But I can’t help feeling like fanon’s interpretation of him has become deeply flawed and even unfair in its simplification of his character.
Peter Pettigrew, as written in the books, is actually a much more complex figure than the rat-betrayer caricature that fanon often makes him out to be. He’s not some mustache-twirling villain, nor is he just a pathetic hanger-on who was lucky to be in the Marauders’ circle. If you really pay attention to the way his character is written, he’s someone who’s constantly underestimated by the people around him, including the very friends he ends up betraying. He’s not powerful in the traditional sense, but his cunning is what allows him to survive the chaos of two wizarding wars. He’s not a mastermind, sure, but he’s resourceful in a way that deserves more recognition than he gets. Canonically, it’s clear that he isn’t just bumbling around until he stumbles into Voldemort’s arms—he’s making calculated choices, and we need to give those choices the weight they deserve.
This brings me to why I think fanon’s insistence on reducing Peter to a one-dimensional villain is so misguided. There's this huge trend in Marauders fandom where Peter is either villainized beyond recognition or, worse, completely written out of the story. He’s often replaced in fanon with a random “better” Marauder, or he’s ignored entirely, as if his betrayal somehow disqualifies him from being part of the story. And here’s the thing: canon compliance isn’t a crime! In fact, canon gives us a far more interesting story. The tragedy of Peter’s betrayal is that he was their friend—he shared their dorm, their secrets, and their history. His actions were not driven by some inherent evil but by fear, survival instincts, and yes, cowardice. It’s a much richer narrative than reducing him to a monster.
In the fandom, there’s often this hyperfocus on moral purity when it comes to the Marauders, especially when it comes to ships and rewriting dynamics. Peter, however, disrupts that neat narrative, so fanon tries to erase him to preserve the integrity of the fan-created relationships. But that oversimplifies everything. Why should we villainize people for sticking to canon when canon is, arguably, what makes the Marauders’ story so compelling in the first place? The fall of the Marauders—this group of young, talented, promising boys—hinges on Peter’s betrayal. You can't just ignore that without losing a fundamental piece of what makes their story so tragic. He’s not a random character you can swap out. He’s the pivot point.
Peter’s character also raises some interesting discussions about how we view heroism and villainy in fandom spaces. For instance, we’re often quick to forgive other characters—Sirius, for all his bravado, is reckless and cruel to people like Snape, but we don’t hold it against him in the same way. We empathize with his trauma, his tragic backstory. So why is it that Peter, who is also a product of his circumstances, is written off? He wasn’t born evil; he was shaped by the same war that shaped all of them, but his path led him to make different choices. There’s something so fascinating about exploring how someone who was once a friend could betray everything. It’s a conversation about human flaws, not just villainy.
And yes, in a world full of Marauders fan content, it’s fine to like your AUs or write your fix-its. But let’s not pretend that sticking to canon, and appreciating Peter for the complex character he is, is somehow less valid. The fandom would benefit from looking at Peter as more than just “the betrayer” and instead as someone who, like everyone else in the story, is a deeply flawed person whose mistakes have devastating consequences. That makes the story richer, more painful, and ultimately, more meaningful.
forgive me for the ramble but Im going insane with my term paper and my thesis, unfortunately I've been diving too deep into the marauders again
hello miss Carina! I'm not very well versed in the marauders fandom (but I love your works) and was wondering what are the valkeryies?
hello my lovely!! i am SO HAPPY you asked
crescenthistory's introduction to the valkyries
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
since you said you're not well-versed in the fandom at all, i'm over-explaining to be on the safe side, sorry if you already knew all of this 🙏
"the valkyries" is a group name in the same way as the marauders (james, sirius, remus, peter) and the slytherin skittles (barty, evan, regulus, dorcas, pandora) are
unlike the marauders (who are named explicitly in the hp books through the marauders map), the skittles and the valkyries are fandom names for the different friendgroups at hogwarts
(nb, the skittles are sometimes called the emeralds by people who think that name is too silly lmao, and pandora is traditionally thought of as ravenclaw, despite the name being slytherin-centred)
these friendgroups, of course, often over-lap in fan interpretations as we love to have them all as one vast giant family
in OG fanon lore, the valkyries consist of the three gryffindor girls: lily evans, marlene mckinnon and mary macdonald
lily we know a "lot" about from the books; she is studious, fiery, kind/nurturing, stands up for what is right and loves her friends fiercly
mary is only named as a member of the order who did not die and is mentioned by lily in a flashback where she says mary was a victim of a muggleborn hatecrime
thus we as a fandom have concluded that she is muggleborn and kind. from there, interpretations of her vary, but i characterise her as sassy, down to earth, a bit flirtatious yet shy, kind of cottagecore-y
when we talk about the marauders era in a canon compliant way, most people believe that mary survived the first wizarding war and obliviated herself of any knowledge of magic afterwards because she couldn't live with the trauma. she went on to live the rest as a "muggle"
marlene is mentioned only once in the books and is said to have been a member of the order who was killed alongside her entire family
she is generally characterised by the fandom as being incredibly loyal and family-centric (blood and found family), outspoken/brazen, confident, passionate and kind
most people hc her as an avid quidditch fanatic (wants to be a professional player when she grows up, becomes either that or a healer)
these three shared a dorm at hogwarts and made up the foundation of the friendship between the marauders era girls
(either peter or remus is often hc-ed as being brought in as an "honourary girlie" in some of their hangouts because of their quietness and respect)
they are called the valkyries specifically because valkyries in norse mythology are beautiful female warriors who bring fallen soldiers to valhalla ("heaven") -> a poetic take on who they are
they are close friends with the marauders, depending on your hcs
i for one believe that marlene and james are childhood besties (because wizard families and quidditch) and lily and remus instantly connect (because of similar personalities and views), so the friendgroups are kind of merged immediatley
it also makes sense that the two gryffindor groups are connected to some degree -- i don't like the idea of them splitting up into "genders" so divisively, i view the different friendgroups as originating from their dorms and then mixing from there
where and how the slytherin skittles come in, usually depends on your hcs or the fic (as in, you go with what suits your story)
the obvious connection is regulus and sirius as brothers, so in fics where they are close, it makes sense that the friendgroups merge
other than that, the friendgroups usually merge through different ships: james/regulus, marlene/dorcas, lily/james, lily/pandora, remus/regulus, etc.
most people nowadays (ESPECIALLY ME) consider dorcas and (sometimes) pandora as either parts of the valkyries or at least good enough friends with them that they are together a lot
while i see dorcas and pandora as slytherin skittles/emeralds first and foremost, i will usually also include them in chats about the valkyries and will list poly!dorlene and poly!pandalily under the valkyries tag in my masterlist
they become integrated with the three valkyries at some point during their time at hogwarts; the original trio expands
i usually consider the shift to have happened around fifth year, but it's flexible
(if you want to know more about dorcas and pandora, i have a lot of headcanons about them under the slytherin skittles part of my masterlist)
i personally am an avid dorlene (dorcas/marlene) shipper and don't really entertain other pairings for either party, though i know some people are fond of marlene/mary
marylily is a huge other ship within the valkyries and is often considered "complementary" to dorlene
pandalily (pandora/lily) is also growing in popularity from what i've seen
if you want any headcanons for any of these ships (either on their own or poly x reader), i am more than willing 🥸
there are also wider friendgroups and other characters around at hogwarts that are sometimes mentioned or integrated into fics, either to serve a purpose or just for the vibes
some of these that i occasionally use are: the black sisters (reg&sirius' cousins andormeda, bellatrix and narcissa), amelia bones (hufflepuff), emmeline vance (ravenclaw), alice fortescue & frank longbottom, rita skeeter, ted tonks, the Bad Guys in slytherin lol (severus snape, rabastan lestrange, lucius malfoy, mulciber, avery, etc.)
i hope this gave you a better idea of who they are bubs! let me know if you want any more details or to chat about them<33
since any lore is essentially entirely based in fanon, it is very much up to everyone's personal preference and is even subject to change from fic to fic, but all in all the valkyries are lily, marlene and mary + other potential girlies(gn) they drag with them along the way 🤍
I just saw a fanart of Sirius and Snape. What was that? Why was that hot? How the fuck was that hot??? TELL ME ABOUT THEM! I'M NOT GETTING THEM OUT OF MY BRAIN. What is the deal here??!?!?!?
Is the fanart from intotheswollenriver...bc yeah, god they are hot.
It's hot because they absolutely hate each other but they would also wholeheartedly trust each other when it comes to achieving their number one goal, which is protecting Harry. Like their vibes are enemies, so a divorced couple with phenomenal co parenting skills?? Best friend of Lily, best friend of James??
Besides that, I'm pretty sure they have a lot of parellels. Which is why I reallyy love shipping them.
Sirius hated his home life but he was forced to live back there again though it was for a short while, Severus also lived back in his childhood home, though he spent most of his time Hogwarts for his career.
Sirius and Severus had a huge part in the deaths of the Potters, and therefore felt responsible/guilty. "I as good as killed them." (Can't remember the quote) and Severus's...well you know.
Other DEs suspecting Severus to be a traitor and other Order allies actually convicting Sirius as the traitor?? Also the literal ex death eater believes Sirius was a DE and the wrongfully convicted one doesn't even know Severus had a dark mark?? Like??
There's more but I can't remember lol.
Snupin is sad angst but snirius is like...angry angst. Snupin is recovering from their teenage bs and the war but snirius is making it worse. Like... reverting? Relapsing??
Because Sirius says shit like he wasn't proud of his teenage treatment towards Severus, and drops quotes like oh the world isn't black and white harry or whatever and then turns around and says Severus deserved the Prank happening (although I think this happened first) and speaks to Severus like he's the worst scum on earth, even before he finds out Severus was a DE. Like despite how impulsive he is, Sirius does understand, he has logic and everything but literally all of that goes out the window the moment he talks to Severus?? Like, heed your own words bro, why can't you??
Severus gets to be an asshole to Sirius for obv reasons, PTSD and all. I forgive him.
Anyways, they literally get under each other's skin like no other. The only marauders era characters to be written this way. Like it's been more than a decade since their childhood "feud" (/sarc) and they still revert back to their teenage self whenever they fight. It's so fascinating because we know Severus is the rationally composed one. Even Sirius has his moments.
And yet, even though every one of their canon interactions were bitter and heated, Severus handles the unconscious body of Sirius carefully, he doesn't knock his head around on purpose (unlike Sirius with Severus's body) and Severus genuinely did not want Sirius to die. Before they even properly had a conversation, Severus seems to have uh moved on? He was ready to forget the whole "getting back" at Sirius thing, he's over it but all that past resentment, anger and bitterness comes back immediately the moment he talks to Sirius. Which, I don't blame him for. Human response honestly.
At his core, he understands that no matter how horrible Sirius was to him, this is Lily's friend, this is someone Harry cares about. So kind of like Harry to Draco, this guy is a piece of shit but he doesn't deserve death
And this is somewhat similar to Sirius's oh Snape? Hated that Slytherin guy, sucking up to all those horrible slytherins, I wouldn't mind if he died back then lol... what do you mean he was a death eater? Are you sure?
Hence, they are enemies and lovers. I don't think they'll ever move past the enemy phase. So they are both. Their conversations are 100% full of witty quick comebacks and sarcasm. They've lived through experiences literally no one else shares. Like who else would know what it's like to unintentionally play a key part in orchestrating the Potter's death??
Even besides that, how they're written too. Severus is poor, working class, bullied, ugly, greasy hair, goes from the lowest of the barrel and works his way up, rational, and introverted, inherits almost nothing valuable from his pureblood mother. Sirius is rich, highest of the highest elite, peaked in highschool, handsome, gorgeous hair, falls from disgrace—a young man with a huge inheritance to an escaped convict, irrational and extroverted, inherits like?? Everything?? From his family???
Also, there's Severus who hates his name from his father because abusive guy and Sirius who hated what his family represented. Hmm, they're not exactly the same but the vibes....
Like it's so...ugh compelling?? It SPEAKS to me.
Marauders x Batfamily Crossover
So I really want to write a marauders x bats crossover, but I am uncharacteristically lost on the mechanics of it. You see, I love coming up with random au’s for my fandoms, and I have SO MANY IDEAS about interactions between marauders era characters and the bats (specifically around sibling dynamics), and many many ideas for random plot points and scenes, but what I can’t figure out is why they end up in this situation in the first place.
The general idea is that the bats go undercover at Hogwarts during the marauders era to gather information and help with the war against Voldemort. I’m not sure WHICH of the bats it would be, and what their roles in this endeavour would be (is it Tim, Steph & Damian who go, as they’re the only ones in the age range? Or is there some sort of age reversal spell involved that allows them all to attend? Or maybe the older bats are involved, but from the outside, as members of the Order of the Phoenix or Deatheaters or Ministry workers etc., or is it Young Justice who go?), but that is something I can figure out later depending on the mechanics of how it comes about.
What I need to know first is why it’s happening. Whereas in Golden Trio era crossovers the timeline can easily be adjusted to match up, for this crossover it’s very important that the Marauders era is in the 70s, and the bats would have to be from the 2010s+ in order to realistically have the technology they do. Therefore there has to be some sort of time or dimension travel involved. Meaning that this mission has to be entirely purposeful and planned. They have to have a reason to go back in time or travel to another dimension to help with the wizard of war (which also happens to be in England, very far from Gotham and the bats territory).
I have plans for how they get magic, how they get into the school etc., but this part is what’s really bugging me. I need my AU’s to make logical sense, otherwise I drop them.
I’d also like to mention that there are literally no fics with this crossover on ao3, and therefore I, as someone who has been deeply immersed in both these fandoms for a while, feel a moral obligation to fill this tragic gap. There’s just far too much potential for character interactions and awesome plot points to pass up the opportunity.
Also I’d like to put what ships/headcanons I may be including/referencing in this, just as a disclaimer in case anyone feels strongly against them. Just because they’re on this list doesn't necessarily mean they will definitely be included, but this is just what I fuck with and will include if it works for the plot.
•Romantic Ships (Marauders): Jegulus, Wolfstar, Pandalily, Dorlene, Rosekiller.
•Romantic Ships (Bats): TimKon (possibly Timberkon), Birdflash.
•I can maybe be convinced to include others so long as they’re not incest, age gap or anything else horrifying and illegal.
•Platonic Ships/Dynamics (Marauders): Marauders (James, Peter, Sirius, Remus)(obviously), Valkyries (Lily, Mary, Marlene), Skittles (Regulus, Barty, Evan, Dorcas, Pandora), Black Brothers (Regulus & Sirius), Prongsfoot (James & Sirius), Moonwater (Regulus & Remus), Moonflower (Remus & Lily), Marlene, James & Peter as childhood besties.
•Platonic Ships/Dynamics (Bats): all the bats to varying degrees obviously, but specifically, Jason & Tim, Tim & Steph, Tim & Damian, Dick & Damian, Damian & Jason.
I’ve almost definitely forgotten some but you get the general picture. Hopefully.
I have an entire google doc dedicated to what houses I think each of the bats would be in, but my opinion on that changes literally daily. They’re confusing your honour. But mainly I think it would just be hilarious to put Jason Todd in a dorm with the marauders and watch them flounder. Oh and stick Tim in Regulus’ dorm. He’d be such a menace. And Steph in the Valkyries dorm. Someone stop me before I cause too much chaos 😭
Anyway! This crossover has been living rent free in my mind for so long and I would appreciate any and all feedback/thoughts/opinions/ideas!!!!
I’ll probably add more onto this at some point, but this is the general gist. Pleaseeeeee gimme ideas!!!
Oh also fuck jkr :)
You mentioned fanon turning barty crouch jr. into an uninteresting character. I don't know much about what the new fanon characterisation has really done with him, but I'm curious for your thoughts on why he's a canonically interesting character. I agree that he is, but it sounds like you might have some interesting thoughts on it that are already fleshed out.
thank you for the ask, @jamesunderwater, and i'm sorry for taking so long to drag myself around to answering this.
as you may have gathered if you’ve read my views on jegulus or wolfstar, the common fanon interpretation of marauders-era characters and i don’t really get on.
this is not a new development - me and goofy fanon sirius have been beefing for over a decade at this point, i fear - but our enmity has taken on a new form since [roughly] 2020, when the emergence of what we might call the modern marauders subfandom brought with it a whole series of expectations about characters, ships, personalities, and appearances in first war stories which - let me state my position immediately - have absolutely nothing to do with the characters as they are in canon.
i could talk about sirius or regulus or james or snape or lupin until the cows come home - as, i’m sure, could many of us - but i also dislike the expectations the marauders subfandom has around its supporting cast. these characters - who largely fall under the categories of women, slytherins, or both - have names that we might recognise from canon, but they are - to all intents and purposes - original characters.
to do some marauders fan defending, i do understand the rationale behind this. hogwarts is a school, and it needs to be filled with the sort of incidental characters that lightning-era writers can pull from the canon text [shoutout to ernie macmillan, the mvp]. if you’re writing about lily, then she needs friends - why not have them be alice, marlene, dorcas, emmeline, pandora etc.?
[well, because dumbledore isn’t running a child army. it makes no sense for the entire order of the phoenix to be in the same school year - and the idea that alice is probably around ten years older than lily, that pandora is around the same age as narcissa malfoy and isn’t a pureblood, and that marlene, dorcas, and emmeline are hard-nosed ministry bitches in their fifties who can have mad-eye moody quaking with just a look is something which can be prised from my cold, dead hands.]
and if you’re writing about the epic highs and lows of high-school football going to school during a sectarian conflict, then you need some antagonists. which is to say, you need some slytherins.
the issue i have is that the three key slytherins who seem to have been elevated to principal cast in the marauders pantheon - regulus black, barty crouch jr., and evan rosier - get what can only be called the smol bean treatment. that is, that three teenagers who all canonically join a terror organisation are turned into soft and tiny babies who thought lord voldemort was just feeling silly when he said, "my aim is the eradication of the muggleborn population through violent means."
and even fics which do acknowledge that the three willingly become terrorists often go out of their way to provide justifications for this which don’t contextualise their decision [something which is important - you can’t write about snape becoming a death eater without acknowledging the way that poverty, loneliness, and a sense of hopelessness make someone an easy target of radicalisation] but which minimise it. sometimes, their violence is turned into romantic vengeance - i’ve seen a fair amount of suggestions that barty goes to torture the longbottoms because frank was the auror who killed evan. sometimes, authors imply - or even outright state - that there’s no need to see these boys as aspiring villains: voldemort is right; the class system is good and should be maintained; and purebloods [usually james, sirius, regulus, barty, evan and maybe a token woman or two] should stick together while the half-breeds and the mudbloods go hang.
this - like all aristocracy wank in this fandom - annoys me enough with regulus and evan. but it’s particularly grating when it comes to barty crouch jr. because - unlike evan, who is literally just a name in the text, and regulus, who isn’t much more - he actually has a canon personality.
and it’s fascinating. indeed, i would even go so far as to say that barty crouch jr. is the greatest villain in the harry potter series.
[my apologies to lord voldemort.]
after all, even though he’s been imprisoned under the imperius curse for over a decade, barty is still so lucid and powerful that he is able to:
produce magic capable of tricking the goblet of fire, which is treated by all the adult characters involved as unprecedented.
pull off a year-long impersonation of a man whom dumbledore evidently knows extremely well without being clocked until his mission has been successful, even though his opportunities to observe the real moody can have been virtually non-existent. he is in character within seconds of his ambush on moody’s home - after the intruder-alert dustbins are set off - and is able to persuade ministry personnel who can be presumed to have met moody personally [including both amos diggory and arthur weasley, who appear to know him not only personally, but well] that he is the real deal. he maintains his performance even under close scrutiny from the teaching colleagues he has to interact with daily at hogwarts, despite the fact that he presumably can’t get a great deal out of the real moody, since he’s having to be kept deliberately weak and docile under the imperius curse.
manipulate multiple people into become accessories to his crimes, without ever being suspected of doing so. with the hindsight of knowing who he is, the first defence against the dark arts lesson in goblet of fire, in which "moody" deliberately distresses neville by using the cruciatus curse directly in front of him, before swooping in to be the person to cheer him up so that he can plant information which will help harry win the triwizard tournament and deliver him to voldemort, is chilling. he just gets unlucky that harry has the biggest martyr complex in human history.
commit murder on hogwarts’ grounds without ever being suspected of wrongdoing.
execute lord voldemort’s plan to kidnap harry and use him in his resurrection ritual flawlessly. the plan itself may be convoluted - but dark lords are allowed to have a flair for the dramatic, as a treat - but, crucially, it works, and barty succeeds in every respect.
but, i concede, we’re talking about the adult barty here. perhaps he was once a sweetheart who went unfortunately off the rails after his father sent him to prison and then - in effect - drugged him for years. that wouldn’t be a ridiculous suggestion.
except for the fact that - canonically - the teen barty was just as clever, sly, manipulative, and - above all - ardent in his support for voldemort as his adult self.
at his trial in the early 1980s, young barty gives the performance of a lifetime. he screams, he shakes, he looks terrified of the dementors, he is pale and weak and harmless-looking, he begs his mother to help him, he pleads with his father for mercy, he maintains his innocence as he's dragged off to his cell. he gives off the impression of simply having been in the wrong place at the wrong time so well that harry is almost certain that his conviction is illegitimate. so too, it is implied, is dumbledore.
indeed, barty plays the part of the wrongfully imprisoned so well that - as canon tells us - he not only influences public opinion to be broadly in favour of his probable innocence [or, at least, his diminished culpability - sirius suggests that the widespread view was that he was probably there, but that he only ended up involved in what was clearly bellatrix’s idea because of his father’s failure to relate to him properly], but also changes public opinion against the government’s anti-death-eater strategy entirely.
following his imprisonment, his father - a man who never met an extrajudicial punishment he didn’t like, and whose ruthless approach to dealing with the death eaters in the first war [such as his use of internment for suspected terrorists and his order to aurors to shoot to kill] was, we are told, enormously popular with the wizarding public - is forced to resign in disgrace from his role as head of the department of magical law enforcement. crouch sr. is quietly shuffled off into a boring bureaucratic position, his ambitions to be minister in tatters, and his only way forward to free his son from the prison cell where he is languishing for the crime he very literally did.
[as an aside, i do think that we are supposed to read bellatrix as the ringleader of the torture of the longbottoms. but, all too often, that gets reduced to her doing everything while rodolphus, rabastan, and barty just stand there gormlessly. they were clearly performing the curses too!]
now, barty’s unusual cunning can - of course - be explained by narrative reasons. the text needs to conceal that he’s the villain [since, as with philosopher’s stone, it wants to imply that the dark lord’s faithful servant at hogwarts is snape] until the very end - and this naturally requires dumbledore to not think too hard about whether his good judy alastor is behaving even more strangely than usual.
the text also needs to suggest that he's innocent in order to properly stick the landing on the narrative role of his father - barty crouch sr. as with dolores umbridge in order of the phoenix, crouch sr. exists to show harry [and the reader] that the rot in the wizarding world was not caused by - and will not stop with the defeat of - voldemort. his ruthlessness and inflexibility, his lack of respect for due process, his astonishingly cruel treatment of winky [brutal beyond even the standard way in which wizards abuse their enslaved elves] all serve to teach harry that the anti-voldemort cause can become just as easily corrupted as the disillusioned young men in voldemort’s orbit. the suggestion that crouch sent his own son to azkaban without good reason, simply because he would not deviate from his beliefs, is an important lesson to harry about what "justice" actually means.
but, despite this, barty is also able to pull off his deception because he’s spectacularly talented. it’s not all just narrative.
and his talents are caused by characteristics which aren’t good or bad in and of themselves. he’s clearly very intelligent [he got twelve owls, the series’ benchmark for genius]. he’s hyper-observant, creative, adaptable, good under pressure, and possessed of nerves of steel. he shares these traits with other villains in the series - voldemort above all - but he also shares them with plenty of the heroes. harry, for one.
which is to say that all of his personality traits could be put to non-criminal uses. but - as with harry, who is capable of being quite sinister when he wants to be [for example, when he manipulates slughorn into giving up the horcrux memory] - they would give a non-criminal barty an edge. and this doesn’t seem to be present in his standard fanon persona - as sweet and goofy as all marauders-era men - to any great extent.
finally, there is another aspect of barty’s character which is absent from his fanon version - that he clearly has some sort of childhood trauma, but that this does not excuse any of what he does.
even though crouch sr. is right to send him to azkaban, he was clearly also a cold and distant father, who had absolutely no idea how to relate to his son.
[as another aside, this emotional negligence is bad enough without it needing to be written as having been accompanied by extreme physical and/or sexual abuse. there seems to be a real tendency in fanfiction - not only in marauders-era stuff, although the exaggeration of orion and walburga black into despotic villains is one example of this - to make childhood misery "worse", in order to justify a character’s later actions.]
voldemort demonstrably uses barty’s terrible relationship with crouch sr. [and his absolutely flagrant daddy kink] to groom him into taking the dark mark [not least because there’s otherwise no explanation for why he cheerfully informs him that he too is named after his dad], which he may very well end up taking when he’s still at school. my reading is that he’s recruited to inform on his father - since voldemort would undoubtedly wish to keep the head of the department of magical law enforcement under constant surveillance - and that this is why the dark lord pays him the attention he is so obviously lacking.
but, as with snape and regulus and draco malfoy and all the other young death eaters, barty also colludes in his own radicalisation. voldemort is a master at ensnaring recruits, sure, but he’s also a busy man. he only bothers to make the effort because the clever, creative, cunning, manipulative young man - who wishes to avenge himself on the father who never paid him attention [sound familiar?] - he finds before him is very much determined to become a spectacular part of his terrorist organisation. and stories which feature him owe it to him to give him that dark complexity of character
show the series’ best villain some respect.
Based on the discussion over the last couple of days, I feel like Drarry fandom has become very...dour? It seems people are bothered that not everyone on here wants angsty enemies to lovers stories all the time?
Draco's redemption is an important aspect of his character and has been brilliantly explored in hundreds, probably thousands of fics and I've read and enjoyed many of them. But, my god, sometimes I want to read something light or I don't have the time to invest in reading 50k+ words about how Harry is finally seeing Draco as more than just a Death Eater. Sometimes I want to see them just be together without the author feeling the need to insert a tangent about what a good boy Draco has been since the War and how he's totally changed now. I can infer that from the fact that Harry has chosen to be with him, he can tell the right sort for himself, you know?
It's as if we're not allowed to say we enjoy Draco as a character unless we explicitly put him through emotional and moral hell first. Also, I feel like by focusing so much on Draco's character arc, we tend to forget that Harry also has shit to work through, beyond needing to accept that he wants to bone Malfoy now.
This is not about calling anyone out, it's just a general trend I've been noticing with the fic and commentary that's been coming out lately. We can enjoy Drarry, but there always needs to be an asterisk to it, always. Have you noticed this or is it just me using the wrong filters/being in the wrong bubble/losing my mind?
I'm going to be honest with you here friend, I had no idea this was happening. I generally tend to stay away from, like, confrontational corners of the fandom (on account of I really don't have the constitution for it), but I know that sometimes these things have a way of reaching you even when you're not looking for them. For your peace of mind, I recommend maybe trying to curate your fandom experience to be less stressful to you because at the end of the day this is supposed to be fun. If you already are and it's not working, I'm fresh out of sage advice :(.
I do see the trend you've mentioned, I think it comes from attaching too many IRL things to a fictional world and adding complexities where there aren't, sometimes it enriches the fandom experience and sometimes it causes people to judge individual characters too harshly. I am but a passing ship in the turbulent waters of the marauders era fandom but it's something I especially notice there, with strictly segregated factions who each have very exacting parameters.
The problem with fandom squabbles like these is that no-one is wrong because we all are; we're all seeing things that aren't there in a series of books written by a terrible person; for all that we can share the joy of flipping the script on jkr, the fandom is never going to be totally unified because we're all making shit up as we go.
I also don't enjoy overly angsty fics where Draco has to martyr himself in order to be redeemed, because the Draco in my head doesn't need to do all that. The beauty (and curse) of a ship as big as Drarry is that there's multiple accepted interpretations of Harry, Draco and their relationship; hell, there's some fics where I feel like the author just slapped the names Harry and Draco on two OCs and called it a day but that just means said works weren't meant for me.
Curating our fandom experience as best as possible is really the only thing we as readers can do; one of the best strategies I've adapted is starting to exit out of fics the moment I realise they aren't working for me. I don't know how many fics I had to force myself to slog through because they are beloved classics, hoping I'd also see what everyone else is seeing, only to learn I should have trusted my instincts and abandoned ship. Ultimately I had to learn to stick with what works for me, even if it means there's significantly less fandom output I get to enjoy.
I honestly don't know if any this helped,
xoxo
✨ Sirius ships ✨
Yup, it's me back again with my rarepairs bullshit. This year, the pair are even weirder than last. I mean, who would have thought that you could ship Sirius Black with Lily's bitter, horrible sister or his even more bitter rival. Just you wait though, because I have some recs for ya!
1. In the language of flowers by dwellingondreams (T, 78,183, Sirius Black/Petunia Evans Dursley)
(I am the one who says 'fuck you') - Benjamin Garcia, 'Ode to the Corpse Flower'. Petunia drips magic the way she drips anger. Sparingly. Subtly. Nothing overt or obnoxious. Nothing that attracts the stares of other children or the suspicion of adults. Just things that help her. Her dolls line back up after the football Lily was kicking about ruins their perfect symmetry. Her bed makes itself while she brushes her teeth meticulously. Tea that is slightly too hot or too cold settles to the perfect temperature. Magic maintains the realm of order she has built around herself. (A witch!Petunia and muggle!Lily AU, covering the Marauders' years at Hogwarts and the First Wizarding War).
To quote one of the bookmarks: A stunning magic-swap AU that sends Petunia to Hogwarts in place of Lily. Thoroughly spectacular in its attention to the teen girl world of the 1970s and the misfit neurotic who finds herself becoming a heroine. Is it the best Marauders-era story ever written?
As a neurodivergent gal, Petunia in this fic is so relatable. I could see too much of myself in Petunia's feelings and actions throughout the fic. She is messy, sometimes bitter and uncomfortable, but gradually grows into a determined and capable woman with such a sweet relationship with Lily, her Gryffindor girlfriends and the Marauders.
Honestly, Petunia's relationship with Sirius is just one of this fic's highlights. You could truly see how they could fit together as a couple. They're both headstrong and powerful, with sharp minds and even sharper tounges. They don't always get along, but when they do, they're unstoppable.
The writing is so insanely poetic with many memorable descriptions that stay with me long after I've finished it.
One of my best finds this year for sure!
2. Beyond The Veil by Adreamermusing and ashesashesshackles (M, 97,730, Sirius Black/Severus Snape)
In one world, Sirius Black ignored Severus Snape's warning and went to the Department of Mysteries to save his godson's life. He died and went beyond the veil. In another world, Sirius Black stayed back. This made all the difference. An AU where Sirius Black survived and now knew Severus Snape's deepest secret.
Hear me out, you won't regret reading this fic.
Reading this one makes me realize how similar both men are. Both try to run away from their family, both capable, smart yet so traumatised and starved for love and affection. The draw has been there since the beginning, and in a strange twist of fate, that seemingly hostile attraction has the chance to turn into something else when Sirius discover Snape's secret.
Honestly, bravo to the authors for whipping up a fic with such mind boggling emotional impacts. Both men are such a wreck, but once the connection is established, they couldn't let each other go. Yet, their journey is not smooth sailling at all, especially in the backdrop of the war where Snape needs to win a war and Sirius wants to protect Harry so badly.
This fic is so raw and angsty from time to time. The multiple POVs among Sirius, Snape and supporting cast lends this story a very strong voice with many heavy hitting scenes. Even though this fic is not canon compliant, I've gained better appreciation for canon characters and relationships through the authors' interpretation, particularly Sirius and Remus', Harry and Sirius', Remus and Nymphadora's, as well as Dumbledore and Severus'.
We even get the pleasure to see Harry slowly uncovers Snape's hidden aspects beyond their mutual loathing, which helps Harry to understand more about the man behind the notorious potion master.
All of this happen without any of the characters being OOC. The development between Sirius and Severus is slow yet lovely and believable. There was so much bad blood in their past, yet I'm genuinely in awe at the authors' ability to unpack and reconcile it, while showing how much comfort they've found in each other despite everything.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best Snack fic on ao3!
Prongsfoot Week 2024 - Day 1
When and Why did you begin to Ship Prongsfoot?  What makes you Ship it?  Basically, just gush on this ship.
I don't think I can give a date for when I started shipping Prongsfoot. I know the first time I bookmarked a fic with them as the main pairing was in 2020 and I had them as a background pairing in a fic I wrote in 2019, but I've shipped them for longer. I think it's just one of those ships that make sense to me, so it's always kind of been there. But I was mostly actively writing and reading in the lightning era for a long time, then added the next-gen era and it's really only in the past year I actively started engaging with the Marauders-era side of the HP fandom. So I guess when could be answered with both "since I realised shipping was a thing" and also "about one year ago" depending on how you see it.
I've always had a special place in my heart for the best friends to lovers trope, and Prongsfoot is everything I love about it. I love that they're brilliantly clever and use it to create chaos and joy around them. I love how far they go for their friends. I love how they (despite being privileged enough that they could have chosen to benefit from prejudices) decide to put their whole selves into fighting for what they know is right. I love that despite being so good they're also little shits who only really care about what the other thinks of them - and fuck the rest of the world. I love that they're codependent to a point where one doesn't function without the other and wouldn't want to even if they could. I love the idea of choosing your best friend. Of them realising they already have everything they want and making the choice to keep it. I love the soul-crushing angst when they don't choose each other, at least not only each other. I love the heartbreak and loss and desperate, aching longing of canon compliance and the joyful, wholesome and sweet potential of canon divergence and AU's.
I love that it's a pairing that has range from purely fluffy "oh I love him, and he loves me back" vibes to star-crossed, war-torn, broken-hearted, one-sided, MCD, hurt/no comfort angst. I love that canon gives them the most painful story of all and I love exploring that - and also giving them a happier story.
They're just – they're soulmates and they will always be soulmates no matter what relationship they have to express that. But there's something so special about them deciding to just make each other their everything; lover, best friend, family, husband, partners in mischief and business and in life.
🧡💛🖤🏳️‍🌈💀
🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?
Oh! I was going to say oh i can't really think of anything else other then Imperioused Percy but immediately after thinking that my brain went pst pssst Stan-
so yes
Stan Shunpike NOT being under an imperious during the last few books
he's not a bad guy he's just a dumbass who talks to much and said something stupid to a veela while trying to flirt
I know like where it comes from because Remus is all like 'this is war how could you possibly know that Harry you're being naive blah blah blah blah you should have killed him you idiot' *not actually what he said but something like that
but like idk Harry is so convinced of him being under and I believe him it makes the most sense to me also puts more weight to the claims of imperious from the first war if there is a character that we know of going through that
unlike Percy where being imperioused takes away from his arc and makes things just less fun Stan being sent to Azkaban on bs charges and getting broke out just to be imperioused and then have to live with that is fascinating to me
he still was an idiot and said something he shouldn't have but the punishment life throws him is so extreme in a way he really doesn't deserve
and there are so many DE characters that are just DE's that stripping one of the more complicated character situations and just changing it to that is just lame to me
a very boring choice imo
💛: What is a popular ship you just can't get behind, and why?
uhhhh most of them ngl but in specific
I'm not really into any of the endgame ships except like Bluer but Bluer isn't really popular
but to be fair I'm like that in most fandoms canon ships just don't tend to do much for me overall
I'm very picky on my Draco ships and for me Drarry and Dramione are both kind of yeah ok ig
Pretty much every big marauder era ship that is like a nobody characters
Like why would I ship Barty jr. with who ever Evan is when I can think about him wanting to break his dads new toy (Percy)
🖤: Which character is not as morally good as everyone else seems to think?
Molly Weasley I think she tries yes but i don't think she's as good of a person as some people try to act like she is
🏳️‍🌈: Which character who is commonly headcanoned as queer doesn't seem queer to you?
Most characters are inherently Bi to me just because so that's difficult
maybe Pansy??? i guess??
💀: If you had to choose one major character to die, who would you choose?
Hermione
Not that I don't like her and would be like happy that she died but because i think losing someone from the trio would have been neat and out of the choices (Her and Ron) she would be more fun to kill off since Ron already has the scare moment of him abandoning the group that I think would cheapen his death if he came back after that just to die
