thinking also about ed wearing a string of white pearls and not wearing stede's black cravat - ed wearing a fine thing, ed wearing a beautiful thing like that instead of the more chainlike necklaces he wore in s1. thinking about the pearls being small and imperfect - they're not huge round pearls that have had lots of time to grow, they're newer, they're delicate. thinking about how pearls are formed by an oyster trying to protect it's soft insides, about how it happens when something unexpected slips in between the hard shell and hurts the inside of the oyster, so the oyster covers it to protect itself.

without knowing the context it's hard to say, obviously. but the symbolism i'm getting from it is: i have been hurt and i have been protected. my protection of self is beautiful and worthwhile and is itself a fine thing and i'm still learning how to do it, a bit, how to protect that soft inside of me.

combine that with ed's tied-back hair, the symbolism of his openness and vulnerability, and it's such a great combination. he's opening himself up but he'll protect himself; he deserves to protect himself. he's cautious and learning but he's also trying to put himself out there to be known again.

in s1, ed and stede fall together so quickly, it's such a whirlwind. in many ways, it's falling in love with the mask of each other - stede never opens up to ed, so ed falls in love with stede as a fun time, with stede as a purveyor of fine things, with stede as full of bravado and so much confidence it makes him stupid, and on the flip side, stede is still considering the mask of blackbeard all the way into ep 10. you can't be blackbeard with your blackbeard! he's absolutely lovely--er, and of course, a bloodthirsty killer.

maybe s2 will be about a more careful coming together. about love as a choice - not as a current sweeping them along but as a deliberate step toward each other, and what it means to love. what it means to choose each other. what it means to choose to act with love even when that's hard. what it means to choose to be vulnerable and intimate even if that might get you hurt. to put yourself in someone else's hands like that, and to trust them to keep you.

to let someone in, knowing they can hurt you and trusting them not to, and to choose to see what beautiful thing you can make together.

So first of all, absolutely crying and throwing up over seeing Stede in more "stereotypical" sailor clothes as opposed to his usual attire. Secondly though, he looks to be surrounded by fine things, and it makes me wonder if he's attempting to barter for something? Maybe get a little SPECIAL SOMETHING FOR HIS SPECIAL SOMEONE???

And then this one kills me so hard because it looks like a message in a bottle. Is this an attempt at reaching out to Ed? Have they been trailing and failing to catch up with the Revenge, and this is Stede's attempt at trying to make contact? Or is this a message from Ed to Stede, a heartbroken warning to stay away? Regardless, SCREAMING.

AND THEN THIS ONE. SMILEY FACES. MATCHING OUTFITS!!! Maybe they've paired up with another crew and are temporary members? Like, in order to try and catch up with the Revenge, they had to team up with another ship/crew?

There's a very specific picture in my head of how Ed, Edd and Eddy would celebrate Pride Month/Day.

Eddy would come up with the idea, all excited as usual. He'd be busy getting ready and then would come back to see Ed and Double D. Then there's this iconic scene where Eddy's staring at Double D, who's "ready" but is just wearing his regular clothes and holding a tiny bisexual flag, while Eddy's wearing all kinds of fancy, sparkly and glittery rainbow clothes and accessories, and holding a big gay flag bigger than him. Double D was happy and proud of his little flag, but Eddy was like "Really? That's it?" disappointed with Double D's lack of enthusiasm and interest in showing off (similar to that scene in Steven Universe where Pearl is shyly tapping on a container and asking Steven if she's making enough noise, and Garnet shows her how it's done). And Ed's all covered in paint in the colors of his pride flags (pan, aroace) because he got a little too excited about the paint and made a mess and kinda forgot what he was supposed to do.

Of course Eddy fixed these two and put better clothes and accessories on them. Ed's shirtless and now has his pride flags and rainbows properly painted on his face and abdomen. Double D was embarrassed at first, but gradually he got into the spirit.

MAN i am so close to getting the next part of BU written, im like at the very end of the chapter but im having a hard time wrapping it up, i think because i Know that means then i have to do the pictures 😂

the chapter kinda started off as a freewriting thing, a pwp i wasn't planning on sharing, but then i realized it Could actually be a good filler chapter, and once that happened i was like oh i can't write anymore 😅

but i added a few plotty things, including a conversation i wanted ed and stede to have re: ed's transmogrification which i think is important, and ed giving stede a pearl he finds. he's bringing stede little trinkets like a kitty bringing gifts. mermaids are just big cats 2 me.

When they challenged married couples in their twenty-five-thousand-member congregation to have sex for seven days in a row, “the guys gave us a standing ovation,” said Ed Young in his CNN interview, while Lisa chimed in that “God is the author and creator of sex.”

She sat beside her husband in a leopard-print dress, her long straight hair framing her carefully made-up face; and while she spoke a pop-up caption on the television under her read: “Married to Ed for more than 26 years. They have four children.” In advertisements, she appeared in yet another leopard-print dress, pulling her husband suggestively by the tie toward her on the couch. Sexual prowess became another bit of expected expertise in a megachurch wife’s grab bag of tricks.

There was an accepted cruelty toward famous women in ministry who failed to meet these standards. In the era of “militant feminism,” Ruth Peale begged feminists to stop warring against male exploitation and realize that the “real enemy” was their own lack of femininity. Women who didn’t want to be sexualized, she worried, might make “downright frigid” sexual partners.

Likewise, Beverly LaHaye initially felt sorry for a woman being berated by her husband for looking tired on a date, but then sympathized with the husband for not having a wife with a little more pride in herself. “What a pity to see a Christian woman who has developed her inner beauty but has done nothing to the frame she must house it in,” she fretted.

The common argument given was that men were visual creatures, which made women’s appearance a part of her wifely duties. Her beauty and her sexuality were not her own. When Ted Haggard, megachurch pastor and leader of the National Association of Evangelicals, was caught with a gay prostitute, fellow megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll publicly aired his concerns about “a wife who lets herself go and is not sexually available to her husband.”

Mark had already made headlines on his own accord for having instructed a woman in his church to give her husband a blow job as an apology for not “serving” him. There was always a woman to blame for a man who strayed.

Even the matronly Terrie Chappell, who described herself as a “meek-spirited woman of God” who serves “joyfully and faithfully” by the side of her husband, confessed her enduring wish to meet megaministry’s unrealistic standards. That perfect woman, she wrote, looks “fresh and attractive all the time. Her hair always does what she wants it to do and it’s never flat. Her fingernails are never broken.”

This ideal woman also doubled as a domestic expert who, with a submissive and cheerful spirit, “bakes everything from scratch” and always sticks to her diet. Terrie’s online ministry painted a much more realistic picture of her life as a grandmother who was never far from a prim pearl necklace and a crockpot recipe, who often helped lead an old-fashioned “Ladies Ministry” with classes called “Kindred Hearts,” “Ladies of Today,” and “H.O.M.E.” (Helping Our Mothers Excel). Her book, covered in images of cupcakes, lingered on the trials of putting up floral wallpaper and learning to be patient.

In 2017, the average megachurch wife was around Terrie’s age, wrestling with approaching retirement, and lightly out of step with American culture. She was hardly the sexpot that dominated the marketing of the women in the highest rungs of megaministry, strutting across the mainstage, but audiences still seemed to want her to try.

listen I know this fandom has latched onto every detail of the teaser like bloodthirsty hounds so this might have already been mentioned… but have we screamed about how Ed is wearing the pearl necklace in the scene yet??? no??? cause AHHHHHH 

it’s also the scene where he does this: 

I fully thought that barrel shot was going to be like a Stede nightmare or dream sequence or something at first, but now that it’s clear that they’re all part of one scene and confined to this very specific post-Kraken Ed look, the pearl necklace being present makes this so much more interesting. And I know there’s been lots of buzz and speculation that the man Ed is shooting is Hornigold, so like… okay working theory walk with me here:

Ed reconciles with Stede and Hornigold or whoever this man is (among many others) catches wind of it and reaches out, calling Ed soft, making threats to Stede and Ed’s crew or maybe even offers Ed a chance to work together again or something. But of course by then, Ed will be fully committed to Stede (as evidence by the pearl necklace) so none of this will appeal to him in any way. And the threats make it worse, which is why he looks mildly scared or worked up in that first picture. So he kills Hornigold, symbolizing the death of the past version of himself and of Ed rejecting the lifestyle so many other pirates like Hornigold and Izzy and Calico Jack have wanted for/from him. And, in the process, Ed reminds people (the audience as well as people in this fictional world), that he hasn’t gone soft, and is perfectly capable of committing violent acts but now doesn’t do it for cruelty’s sake, only whe necessary or to protect people he cares about like Stede.

ed is absolutely not dealing with the breakup well. hes shown crying (again), states he had a bad night, and the whole “no more booze, no more drugs and no more stede” part implies he absolutely got high and blackout drunk. when did he do this tho? it could have been the night directly after the breakup, which is possible, but what i think is he did thing at 0:26 and went full blackbeard for a day, then had a super-mental-breakdown at night after he did a bunch of piracy. cmon he had it coming dude got abandoned by the first person to value him as he was and after coping well was promptly told by his like oldest friend to act like the media version of himself again and then killed a guy+ and probably more. 

where did the pearls ed is wearing come from? i think hes wearing them at the scene where they raid a wedding and also above picture, idk. he wasnt wearing them in the last appearance in s1 right? i wish for a timeline when did he get those

what with all the british fancy army dudes and “to is the end of piracy” or something, and now “we have one shot to get out of here”, i think they got captured by the english. blackbeard escaped and broke the act of grace contract, which aint a good look for them. so itd make sense if they were to go after the revenge. now they get captured, as its implied in that part that the crew are breaking out of somewhere.

September/October 1973 Ah, Youth, The Life Of an O’riginal Chainsaw Gal

A deep spring cleaning brought these little gems above to the surface.

In the days following filming Chainsaw ’74, after we’d wrapped, we were all finding our path, looking for ways to make money. I wasn’t in the brutal chainsaw dinner scenes (t’anks gods!!!). I was done and immediately looking for work, any work. Prior to filming I’d been working at Mrs. Robinson’s Restaurant at the corner of Riverside Drive and Congress Avenue in downtown Austin, for two years, paying for classes at St. Edward’s University, and doing well. Simultaneously, I’d been getting leads in all the plays at St Ed’s Mary Moody Northern Theater. After filming “Headcheese’ (Chainsaw ’74’s working title) for two-weeks, with little in the can, we shut down for a week. Then, we got a call that they found some money, filming was resuming. We all signed new contracts, but this time for ‘deferred money’. They’d kindly held my job at Mrs. R’s for the two weeks, but when we extended filming for another month, they had to hire someone to replace me. Drat. No job, no money.

Out of the blue, Daniel Pearl did me a solid. Our Chainsaw '74 cinematographer, Daniel, offered to shoot a portfolio for me with Daniel as the photographer, and Dottie Pearl assisting me with make-up and wardrobe. Both were full of great ideas, completely supportive, and very talented. Back in the day, with no internet, iPhones, computers, etc., we literally snail-mailed our pictures to casting agents and directors. When I think of the time-consuming hours of addressing, stamping, and trips to the post office, I get exhausted. Now, of course, you can scan and press Send.

Think about it.

The Good News: Everything finally worked out. As happens in life, things always change. For the past few years, our Chainsaw franchise has grown exponentially. I am pleased to report we have all grown close, appearing with my remaining cast mates to celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, since our filming and its release in 1974, appearing at various horror cons with my remaining cast members, together with our film crew members, Daniel Pearl, DP, JMichael McClary, ADP, and Ted Nicholaou, Sound Recordist. Fans love it and we love them!

Thanks to Kim Henkel, his son Ian Henkel, and Chase Anderson, we've been enjoying a real reunion to celebrate a little film we gave our hearts and souls to in the sweltering heat of July and August 1973, that went on to put Texas horror films on the map, a trailblazer, and lauded across the planet as a cult-classic in the horror genre. No sour grapes here, just great lessons learned, and thanks to all those who appreciate our work. We thank you.

The top right picture is from a print ad for Suzuki. Daniel had scored a local Suzuki commercial print ad shoot as DP in September 1973. When the director said they needed a girl who rode a motorcycle, Daniel did me yet another solid, he suggested me.🚀

Fifty years later, I’m still grateful.
