I personally like pre-teen interpretations of Frisk. That’s an age where you start to understand things more instead of just accepting what you’re told. Frisk was probably taught how monsters are evil and dangerous. When they fall in the underground they meet Toriel and see that isn’t true. They can choose to blindly follow what the humans taught them or they can to trust monsters and the kindness they were shown.

I think Frisk is about 7 or 8, so yeah pretty young

(dont ask what that stands for). u racebent characters in a way that coheres, situate ur black characters in a specific context, and the story never deludes us into thinking the mere existence of an interracial relationship is enough to end racism. in e2 louis literally says “fledgling sounds like slave, dont call me that” and e3 starts with louis telling lestat the history of dismembering runaway enslaved ppl & placing their bodies on the gates of of jackson square.. in his initiation to vampirism, louis is moved from the historically Black creole treme area he grew up in & is placed into lestat’s townhome in the very white, french, old quarter. vampirism as hes initiated into is a loving, powerful, cruel, and isolating existence for louis. bc of vampirism he is able to kill a racist person and not be lynched for it, hes able to echo the historical dismemberment on the alderman by placing his body on the st louis cathedral, but he is unable to kill racist groups & systems that initiate race riots. his connection to claudia in s1 is not so much by the oedipal, but by both their connection as lestat’s fledglings and as Black [creole] people placed in a part of the city largely alien to them both. this connection can be broken down even further. louis saw claudia as his joychild of sorts, ‘[his] redemption’ for his 5 years of pimping but a big part of her tragedy is that a child being made into a vampire cannot redeem anyone, much less redeem an individual from what was a historical inevitability. claudia is adopted into such a stature that she wouldve otherwise never reached by virtue of being made a vampire, but even then that is conditional. claudia is rendered inert from being anyone’s ‘wife’ forever trapped in the confines of immaturity as a ‘daughter’, only hoping at best to be louis’s ‘sister’ and isnt that resonant to bw.. she’s selectively infantilized both a child ‘meddling in the affairs of her parents’ , ungrateful, arrogant, and adultified - presumed powerful enough to ‘poison louis against [lestat]’ , taking on the role of louis’s ‘knight in vengeful white black’ .. the response lestat has to claudia is characterized by him continuing the cycle of abuse he once faced toward her and with a black claudia who was once a poor girl now adopted into this immortal luxury it takes on a racialized element. “bach is beyond you” and claudia bites back with “yes this french music is hmm. not made for these mongrel ears”. the absence of metaphor is striking!! literally the fact that this show does not shy away from the era its set in is why its so good.

sometimes the portrayals are really good!! but i hate that often, people portray him either as a moody brat or a weak baby. he is canonically a good fighter, especially after the fire, though he doesn’t like to. hes a loner, hes a reader, hes a pacifist, hes a good kid.

you have to remember that the outsiders is literally written in HIS POINT OF VIEW!!! ofc yes he’s a sassy and snarky teenager but he is also so intelligent and smart. hes a loner, but the gang would never shun his company. he has so much depth that a lot of writers often forget. hes a 14 year old kid with thoughts of a adult and can only do so much. thats what makes the outsiders so relatable to alot of people. its his intelligence that makes him and darry argue, because of how darry sees himself in ponyboy

but also on the other side of the coin ponyboy is a fragile character after the events of the book, because he is 14!!! but he has thoughts!!

i feel like people forget his good traits and only focus on the bad (and oh my goodness does this count for darry too!)

besides fanfiction.net and like 30% of the fics on ao3 hes actually a solid portrayal most of the time, but tons of people forget that his relationship with ponyboy wasnt actually that batshit awful. sure theyd butt heads alot and go back and forth but they love each other thats why they did that. hes so much more than just an angry man who happens to be ponyboys brother.

hes a man who peaked in high school (IM KIDDING) and lost it all not because of his brothers but because of his parents. there was probably some strong resentment there for a while until they died. darrys problem or flaw is that he cares too much and his fear turns to anger. its love for sodapop and ponyboy that brings him back when he realizes his anger is doing more bad than good for his little brothers. It’s opening up and allowing his brothers in that helps his character.

that being said, people often focus more on his bad traits than his good traits. its a running theme in the outsiders fandom, i’ve noticed

ehhhhhh, most johnny portrayals i’ve seen are either really good or really bad. kinda ponyboy’s problem, being seen as weak. hes just a dynamic character who is allowed to be weak but also has so many strong traits about him. he is a frightened wounded animal to most but to the gang hes something more than that. also, snarky and ‘over’ johnny portrayals are great.

THE MARAUDERS ERA SIBLINGS

As someone with 5 younger siblings, I refuse to believe that the marauders era characters were almost all only children.

So may i present, MY SIBLING HCS FOR THEM!!!

James- Defo an only child, spoilt rotten and couldnt do anything wrong in his parants eyes. Monty and Effie had him relitively old too, like probably early-mid 40s. Defo a planned baby, they were probs trying for a while but it didnt work so they started to think that they waited too late, so james was like a miricle to them.

Sirius/Regulus- Obviously theyre brothers, feel like they were planned but unwanted. Like, walburga was betrothed to orion, who was lot older than her btw, and they had to consumate their marrage right away, so i feel like sirius was consieved on their wedding night. Walburga wouldve been 13-16 at the time, and orion wouldve been 25-32. Feel like they had another pregnancy right before regulus but it miscarried early on, so when regulus was consived they just pretended that it was the same one. Regulus wouldve been consieved very shortly after sirius bc theyd like as many heirs as possible, like the rest of their family. They wouldve been all disapointed when he was born a girl and i think he wouldve been a difficult pregnency too. After that they wouldve tried again, and had multiple miscarriges before they finally stopped trying.

Remus- Hope and Lyall wanted more kids after remus, but instead they decided that after remus was bitten it woud just be too difficut and not fair on the other kid or remus to be in that situation.

if we're going with the theory that remus was put up for adoption or somthing bc his parants either died or couldnt take him, then i reckon hed have a younger half sister, about 7 years younger than him, and two younger half-brothers, roughly 5 and 9 years younger than him. But either way i feel like hope and lyall had remus young, at like 18 or 20. Defo wasnt planned.

Peter- Peter would've had an older brother by about 10yrs i think. He doesnt see him anymore and hes THAT family member that the rest refuse to talk about for some reason. feel like he also has a 3 years older sister who he was close with, but died in the 1st war a while b4 he betrayed everyone. his brother wouldve been unplanned and his parants wouldve had him at about 21-24. Peter and his sister were both planed tho.

Mary- Girl has a LOT of siblings. Feel like shes a middle child, but the only witch in the family. Has about 6-8 siblings maybe, her being directly in the middle of them all, and also being a bit overlooked bc shes not always home and lives at a bording school, unlike the others who get public school. think she wouldve been rlly close w the youngest sibling before she started hogwarts, but then she started missing them growing up, so they ended up getting distanced. The oldest of her siblings wouldve been unplanned, but after that her parants just decided to go for it and keep having more. They all wouldve been in a relitively cramped flat in south london, probably with their parants in one room, the two oldest kids in another room, three middle kids in another room, and two youngest in a seperate one.

Lily- Honestly i can see it very well how it is, cannon compliant with her and petunia. Feel like they were both planned, and had a pretty mainstream and nuclear family.

Marlene- BROTHERS. Shes the youngest and only girl out of all of her siblings. She has one older brother by about 3-4 years, and then she also has about 3 or 4 older step-brothers from 6-10 years older than her. She was planned, and her parants originally wanted to have more kids after her, but they ended up splitting.

Dorcas- Feel like shes an only child tbh. Possibly has a younger sister, but she would be about 12 years younger than her or something. Would probs still be in hogwarts when dorcas died. Both would've been unplanned, but kept anyway.

Barty- Every ounce of bartys being just screams only child. He was planned, (and regretted) and his mum wanted one more kid after him and close in age, but his dad didnt want any more, so his mum just decided to use the "perfect on 1st try" phrase all the time. Think his parants wouldve been about 27-29 when they had him.

Evan/Pandora- ROSIER TWINS, OBVIOUSLY. They were planned babies, but i hc that their mum died in childbirth, so their dad raised them alone for about 3yrs, before he started dating and eventually married another woman, their step-mum. And about a 7-10 year age gap later, they had their little half-brother Felix. Evan liked him, but pandora LOVED him, and a few parts of him reminded her of regulus too. Felix was defo planned as well.

Alice- Has a younger brother and sister. Her brothers about 2 years younger than her, her sisters about 5 years younger. Her and her brother were planned, her sister was not.

Frank- Has a brother one year younger than him, both were planned.

Xeno- Has a brother 12 years older than him. His brother was planned, but he was not.

i bought this book for my 5 year old daughter. she kept waking me up in the middle of the night for weeks beforehand. it was normal, kids do that, kids are scared of monsters. but i would always read her i spy. we have every other edition, down to the miniature versions and the seasonal ones. eventually, she learned where everything was, though, and the books got boring, so i looked up 'i spy books' for the 80th time this month. it brought me here, and i purchased the book for shipping.

the very next day it was brought here, and i was astonished at first, but once i saw the condition of how it was packed, i figured why it came so fast. it was a wreck, the corners all beat, a handful of packing peanuts and some thin paper tossed cattywompus inside. the shippers mustve played hacky-sack with it before tossing it up to the house

even so, my girl was excited. she had completely forgotten about the supposed monsters, she just wanted the book. it's a unique edition for sure, instead of looking for small items on a small scale, it just looks like pictures of parks or buildings, along with riddles like 'i spy a tricycle, i spy ten cards, i spy a crack in concrete that's hard'. it was a change of pace for me, even- a challenge. but my daughter was doing phenomenally.

the photographer must be local to my area, because i recognized the photos soon. hell, i think i saw the back of my head in the bank one. but it got strange when it came to a picture of a street.

now im thinking, 'maybe it's personalized, it's google maps, and they look up the address for the buyer before they send it out?' but that was... impossible. after i ordered the book it came the very next day, there was no way theyd be able to just cram this page in last second. not only that, but there was the riddle.

at that point she was crying, and i was.. yelling. i dont feel good about it, god, especially not now, but i was tired and scared. thats no excuse. so was she.

after telling her it would be ok, she slept in my bed with me. i held her tight the whole night through, and i would do my research in the morning, i assured myself.

but i didnt het a chance. by sunrise she was gone. not in her bed, in her pillow fort, not in the kitchen, the den, nowhere. i phone the police, and i end up running down the street screaming her name.

as i get back home, though, i felt compelled to that damn book. god, why did i go back to that damn book??

Well. It took some digging, but there's your recommendation. We were able to get I Spy: Housewarming from the crime scene - or, more so, the wreckange. Donna was griefstruck, this adding onto the loss of her husband shortly before this, leading to a burst of arson. The book was recovered just fine, seemingly one of the Leitners that can withstand some flames.

where do i begin..... ill format this as a vague list of 5 so that i dont just ramble on in circles, not necessarily numbered in order of hatred

5 "all the clans actually unite and live together at the end! and nobody has any problems ever"

this is like the most naive liberal bullshit plot point i constantly see people do and its like. something on the level a 13 year old would come up with. like yes i get it people like to do this because it is a conclusion to the first arc and the last hope and a bunch of other subplots but people always approach this idea as a magical solution to all problems of clan society as if the only thing wrong with it is the fact that interracial marriage is not allowed and not like, that every fundamental facet of cat society is war hungry, hostile to outsiders, panopticon-y and of course, broadly fascist. i cannot suspend my disbelief that every cat would come together and agree on living as one unit (or even between open borders) because there are multiple cats in the books that are canonically bigoted as hell and i think that is more interesting than making everyone milquetoast hippies as these rewrites seem to do. theres also a strong attitude about either a) starclan being right and awesome and cool b) starclan being completely abolished which both suck. i want to see the eternal torment of the clans at the hands of the literal personification of their own history.

^ admittedly ive only skimmed through the books and listened to her own videos about it in the backgorund, but its why i cannot vibe with s/unnyfalls oots rewrite whatsoever, trying to put a bandaid on all the weird fascist implications that are in the books by going "no see all the fascist parties are friends and any child can CHOOSE which kind of little fascist they want to be" like thats the kind of thing that works for a children's book series Base Setup, but warrior cats does not have that base setup, and rewrites like hers are very much attempts to make the series way more "deep" which just tremendously fails when paired up with that idea. sorry

one last comment i want to make is that these kinds of conclusions, especially if its a development that occurs after the last hope, it reminds me of a lot of very liberal ideas like "we are all one race the human race.... we are all. one nation. wwe are all the saame" which is just like. Lmao.

tangentially its why i disagree with the idea of having wildly different cultures between clans because i've grown to really like the redundancy in clan tradition and structure while still having the clans be very territorial and antagonistic to each other – thus i think its more poignant that in theory/for short periods of time, the clans CAN unite because they operate in practically identical ways, but they always drift apart in the end due to a sense of righteousness, ego, and the weight of "legacy" and all that bullshit. its not a trope i necessarily dislike though, i actually quite enjoy fleshing out cultural differences between clans and i actually like using it as a in-universe justification as to why the clans cannot ever find peace as a cohesive unit, with cats falsely playing up the differences between the clans as reason for why theyd never get along, etc. i like depicting all the clans as clearly having the same origin point with shared basic mythology, laws and beliefs, but each bearing little minute variations on them due to regional separation. in a sense i want to view the differences between clans as more akin to differences between languages or neighboring countries' folklore rather than completely distinct units

the title of this one is very vague, but i think i can just say "you know when shipping squirrelflight with the dead kid shrewpaw who she was barely best friends with was a big thing, because they talked once, and because people thought that a child getting hit by a car in the midst of a massive starvation event was really sad and the only solution was to retcon his death?" yeah. stuff like that. i suppose with that example it delves more into the "a character's death is erased because people like to delude themselves that so-and-so is more important than they actually are, when the character's death is actually the most impactful and interesting thing about them" which i've complained about in the past with swiftpaw in particular (and i especially do not like retcons where he becomes disabled in lieu of dying, because at that point if youre going to explore that, brightheart literally exists! think of her as a character with her own trauma instead of just as an accessory to cloudtail)

anyway, this was actually kind of a bigger thing a few years back and i think people tend to be more thorough with their headcanons (that are still bad, but at least theres thought put into them) nowadays. it also mostly haunts cats from early arcs now that i think about it. i dont see much of it for like, violetshine or whatever lol

as a tangential thing, this extends to people just making relationships between cats "perfect" and ironing out all the weird implications of them just because it intrudes on the 'wholesome' idea of cats popular to fanon. like biggest example i can think of is yet again brightheart and cloudtail. cloudtail kind of sucks and never listens to her and i think thats interesting to explore instead of being like. Oh yeah. I made this ship GOOD and better than canon because theyre he/him lesbians and nice to each other. Like keep them dysfunctional at least

i dont like brambleclaw either. i hate him. but within the intent of the series, he has so much more going for him narratively as a son of tigerstar who succeeds firestar, his literal enemy, as a similarly benevolent leader. i prefer to chip off the earnest expression of him as a good person and make him much more troublesome akin to the fanon depiction everyone agrees on where hes manipulative and abusive, because that keeps the major part of his narrative purpose intact while also not dodging the implications of his writing (thus my ideal bramblestar is: son of tigerstar who succeeds firestar, his literal enemy, as a leader who succeeds in warrior cat society and seems overall progressive and kind, but is deeply bitter and unable to maintain healthy close relationships, thus still reflecting tigerstar's treachery in a light different to the one firestar saw him in at any point in time. this is because irony is good.)

anyway. that is a preface to say, i think anyone who starts up their rewrite and is like Alright. you know who should be deputy of thunderclan? brackenfur. sandstorm. fan favorite character #89. i literally dont think there is a character more interesting than brambleclaw to immediately succeed firestar's leadership due to the way the first arc builds him up so anything else just feels fanservice-y and skinny in a narrative sense. just like. Oh yeah. this cat could be passable at leading and thats the only qualification we need. people forget that warrior cats is a story and they get way too into the head of how a deputy would be rationally picked by the characters. so they make boring choices.

^as a positive aside, its why i rather like the idea of twigbranch becoming squirrelstar's deputy and its why i was campaigning for that back before ivypool (yuck) was announced. twigbranch had plenty of setup as a cat who switched between clans numerous times, was an apprentice for an extended period of time almost as punishment, tends to be very benevolent and 'outside' of all the conflicts her peers seem to freely jump into.... would she be a perfect candidate? no shes young and uncertain and inexperienced but that wouldve made her more interesting, and i dont think squirrelflight knows ivypool much more than her, so itd still make sense in the story. ivypool was very much a fan favorite pick. and she is very boring as deputy. the only way they can redeem it is if she gets hit by a car in the coming arc and never gets to be leader

anything that focuses on arcs 1-4 view of starclan and makes them overly ethereal and mysterious and not as vital to the living cats' daily lives, which is simply very boring, because i like focusing on starclan as an extended limb of the living that is naturally flawed for giving cats that have barely just died the privilege of dictating the laws of eternal incarceration and interference with the living, because these cats are still reflections of the culture they were raised in and inherently cannot be free of bias, and the idea that magically traversing into starclan rinses you of all the systemic cat racism in your mind is laughable and indicates just how stupid and white the average warrior cats fan is

"we reject starclan" narratives because thats too happy for warrior cats. as i said i want eternal torment at the very physical hands of your ancestors and history as an extended allegory for society and politics and the dominoes that fall down to get a person in the place they are now. you dont get to run away from it unless you run away from your society. simple as that

making starclan too close of an allegory to god or jesus or whatever, i think a very fundamental part of how starclan operates is that yet again it is a collection of previously living people who are simply now dead people with all the biases that come with formerly being alive in a society, and i cannot stress this enough, the fact that it is a collective force that disagrees with itself and sometimes makes the wrong decisions simply because not enough reasonable people were there at the right time. this is why i think things like the trial in squilf's hope and ashfur's takeover of the dark forest in tbc are delicious plot points and very good pointers for the ideal depiction of starclan. the new team is doing awesome with them. thumbs up.
