so like…this is 100% why ivy had That Reaction to fig disguised as lucy, right? it wasn’t that she saw through the disguise, she just saw her once dead friend now revived (like the rest of the party had already been) and thought lucy finally chose ankarna (chose them)

so much happened in this whole episode but i’m still on fig infiltrating ruben’s dream, making it look like the place where his friend was murdered, and then disguising herself as kipperlilly & repeatedly saying different variants of “somebody needs to take the fall for this, and it’s not going to be me. it’s going to be you.” while adaine as the elven oracle shows up next to her. can you imagine waking up from that, the idea of a horrible truth being pinned on you by your friend to save her own skin while the personification of fate and destiny stands there, almost as a promise that this is GOING to happen to you. we don’t even know if this kid is guilty. my god.

Honestly the pipeline of “reading the-modern-typewriter snippets at midnight on the floor of my bathroom at age eleven so I wouldn’t get caught” to “being a tumblr writer myself” is a wild one.

literally the easiest way to make someone care about a character and make them feel well-rounded beyond basic traits like personality, sexuality, ethnicity, etc, is to give them an actual character arc, and it’s shocking how many people do not seem to fully realize this

you cannot just cram a bunch of tropes. tropes are not the main event, they are tools to tell the story you wish to tell. emotional impact comes from the lead up, so you can’t just jump ahead and expect the payoff to work. “I want this character to just ___ already!” but they’re not there yet. that’s where the arc comes in - how do they get there?

and! most importantly, and this is something I really want people to think about when writing - the most important relationship your character should have, always, is with the world and society around them. defining your character purely through their interactions with other characters are, I find, how a lot of female characters end up feeling flat or not engaging with the themes as much as the male characters, and also how queer and non-white characters wind up as devices for other characters’ development instead of being more fleshed out

you had said something in a previous post about Daniel mixing up memories with Armand and Alice and I entertain this theory too. I think the only thing Armand did was remove himself from Daniel’s narrative. And it isn’t until Daniel is reunited with Armand(Rashid) that he starts to slowly remember. Meeting Rashid triggered the memory of him meeting Armand for the first time and that’s why Rashid with his non freaky ass eyes is the one in his dream and not actually Armand. And I think that’s what keeps happening. Because these tiny memories with Armand have no one to latch onto, Armand is being superimposed onto Alice because there is no where for those memories to go because Armand “doesn’t exist” if that makes any kind of sense lol. Just like with Daniel thinking what Louis said to him post self immolation was some druggie in the drug den he woke up in. That memory had nowhere to go so it was superimposed onto someone else. I don’t think Armand necessarily intended/wanted Daniel to remember which is why he was trying to get the “and then what” Daniel and not the “keep selling it” Daniel and maybe it backfired lol

Oh definitely. I have a feeling that Armand was so focused on keeping Louis from detonating like a god damn time bomb that he didn’t even realize until the scene in 2x04 where Daniel asks about the fire that Daniel was having snippets of memories come back.

Armand doesn’t know what actual love is… he doesn’t know how to spot it. He probably thought Daniel never actually loved him, just was addicted to his blood and wanted to become a vampire. But I think he’s realizing now he was wrong… and that the fact that Armand buried those memories so deep in Daniel… but just SEEING him again triggered them? Like… phew.

Just the way the expression on Armand’s face changes when you see him see the flicker of a memory in Daniel’s mind in 2x04. You can almost HEAR the oh my god he’s remembering me? just in his expression alone.

And Armand is CLEARLY still in love with Daniel, you can see the fondness in his eyes in some moments or the sadness. And then Daniel doesn’t even realize it yet but he’s still in love with Armand… though he thinks it’s Alice (if she even exists - even if she doesn’t) he’s in love with. But in reality…..

I cannot WAIT to see the look on that old man’s face when he realizes.

I also have a theory it was really Armand watching over Daniel this entire time. Louis may have looked in on him here and there… but I don’t think Armand ever let him really go.

I didn't want to make the reblog chain any longer but I just wanted to say I actually don't consider Fyodor's attachment to Dazai as one sided because of this statement from Asagiri: "There are rare moments when Dazai shows his very “human” side. That is when he talks to another superhuman who is on the same level with him. The other is when he talks about his old friend who has passed." But like you mentioned, they're on opposite sides so they're totally doomed hehe. Some fyozai fans like to create AUs where Dazai convinces Fyodor to embrace goodness, but I like thinking about the reverse where Fyodor convinces Dazai to embrace evilness. 😈Imagine how terrifying that would be to have the both of them as antagonists? Nobody would be able to stop them.

And that quote! I’ve never seen it before, that’s so interesting! It recontextualizes what I previously thought about about Dazai’s feelings towards Fyodor. Funny how a certain redhead isn’t included in the people Dazai shows his “human side” to, isn’t it? (I’m sorry skk shippers please don’t kill me.)

To me, it seems that there are two faces to Dazai’s “human” side. There is the part of him that good be traditionally considered “good” and the part of him that could be traditionally considered “evil.” A paraphrased version of a quote I almost remember by heart, is when Oda tells Dazai: “if it makes no difference to you whether you kill or save people in this world, be on the side that saves people.”

In the context of the quote you mentioned and the one I just did, Fyodor represents “kill” and Oda represents “save,” the two ends of the spectrum of what kind of “human” Dazai could be.

With this information, I would consider fyozai’s dynamic requited, but I also think… that’s only if Oda’s character ceases to exist.

I firmly believe that in every universe that Oda and Dazai exist, Dazai chooses Oda. Above Fyodor, above Chuuya, above Atsushi, above the armed detective agency, above the entire world—Dazai will screw up the lives of everybody as long as he can save Oda.

This is evidenced in the Beast universe: a world where Dazai does exactly that.

It could then be plausibly believed that Fyodor and Dazai have a chance at being ride-or-die partners in crime in an alternate universe where Dazai exists and Oda doesn’t—but I highly doubt that. Dazai and Oda’s fates are so intertwined across universes that in every universe where Dazai lives, Oda dies. The opposite is also true; in the only universe that Oda lives, Dazai dies.

Out of billions of universes, the only one where Oda lives, Dazai must die. I argue this shows the sheer extent to which Dazai and Oda’s fate are intertwined, and because they are intertwined, Oda is a central part of Dazai’s character development in every universe.

Of course Dazai being friends with Fyodor and Dazai being friends with Oda aren’t mutually exclusive things, but any kind of relationship Dazai would willingly entertain with Fyodor would always be colored by Oda’s influence, if you know what I mean?

It’s like… having a very memorable ex, even though I don’t ship Odazai.

It is my of my opinion, canonically, that Oda is the only person with the capacity to significantly change Dazai. That is what I mean by Fyodor and Dazai’s dynamic being unrequited—it could be requited, Fyodor understands Dazai, so he could theoretically change him, but it will never be to the degree that Oda changes Dazai. I believe Dazai will always put Oda’s words above everyone else’s, and I believe Oda exists in every universe Dazai exists in.
