Imagine looking at a character whose entire premise is that in every stage of his life, he's made every version of himself into someone that inspires people to such a degree that EVERY SINGLE VERSION OF HIM has people wanting to literally follow in his footsteps in some way or another.....
And coming to the conclusion that like.....the most important things about him are the sum of all his trappings. His entirely homemade developed from scratch could not exist if not for what he already was and brought with him BEFORE crafting this newest version of himself trappings, with his greatest trait throughout all of it being his adaptability; his ability and willingness to roll with the punches and not try to simply weather any opposition or changes to his life but instead reshape himself as needed to better fit INTO whatever new shape his life and the world around him takes. All while managing to carry the most innate, fundamental and necessary aspects of himself from one version to the next. Thus every single version of himself is different but simultaneously every single version of himself is also undeniably the same person.
The strength of this character, to me, will always be that he can be so many versions of himself, he can become so many things, all without ever actually losing or discarding any of the aspects of himself he considers most essential, the things he's not willing to lose or give up just to keep going. Finding that road not taken by most, usually because most never even think to look for it as an option. But one that he's always able to find because the one trick he's mastered in his tumultuous life is threading that needle of not just digging in his heels in an unproductive way but rather being selective about when and where he makes a stand and decides "this is not a thing I'm willing to compromise about" but here are places and ways I can and will change and evolve and adapt in order to make it possible for me to hold onto these parts and keep them as they are.
And that's why its always so mind-boggling to me that so many writers can't seem to think of anything else to do with Dick Grayson other than invent some new reason for him to just....not be that person, or to like just take the character whose most basic fundamental trait he's NOT about to compromise on is willingly giving up his spot in the driver's seat of his own life.....and make him just a passenger in his own life and stories.
Dick Grayson at age nine....at age nineteen...at age twenty nine....the one core thread running through all versions of him is the only way he's standing back and letting you call the shots for him or putting him on the sidelines in some way is over his dead body.
HOW he goes about that, what that looks like, who he becomes and what aspects of himself he plays up at some times and what traits he lets fall by the wayside at other times when they offer less in service to his primary goal here....that changes constantly. He changes constantly.
But those changes are almost always (or at least they used to be/should be IN MY OPINION) made with the intention of keeping certain things about him or his life as consistent as possible.
That's the duality of Dick Grayson that I'm here for. The inherent contradiction of him that COULD allow for endless conflict and breaking new narrative ground in all sorts of ways if mined properly:
His eternal willingness to compromise....but only ever in pursuit of doubling down on the ways he's not willing to compromise.
Forever walking that tightrope in ways that only a kid born and raised in a circus could ever hope to.
#see also: my grinding teeth when people disparage his circus origins#like the only thing its good for is colorful backstory and explaining his acrobatics#THERES. SO. MUCH. THERE.#theres so much EVERYWHERE in every aspect of his backstory and his preexisting comics and yet over and over we get#....what if we just ignored all that and did what the fuck ever as though this character has nothing integral to him or fundamental to say#to be fair my gripes with Taylor are not exactly interchangeable with my gripes with the previous runs#but I lump him in as an extension of them because while evocative of different SIDES of my ennui with these takes on Dick.....#the thing about Taylor's stuff to me (or the parts I read at least) is that its generic as hell while only retaining superficial elements#of Dick's character and stories in order to point to them and say see these are definitely about Dick Grayson. like....only in very surface#level ways. underneath that theyre basically generic superhero adventures that could easily be retooled to be about a pretty sizable number#of other characters. tbh with the whole alfred inheritance thing it honestly felt from the get go#that Taylor was more interested in writing a kinder gentler Batman like a Bruce from one of the animated shows like#The Brave and the Bold who gets along better with everyone else. even the way the Brave and the Bold largely exists to use Batman's#popularity as a star vehicle to platform his co-superhero for the episode lends itself to Taylor's approach in his NW run#with the central figure - only nominally DG imo - basically existing as a platform allowing for the drafting of any other character he want#to write in any given arc or story in a similar way to how Bruce is utilized in Brave and the Bold#anyway. idk idk. my issues with Taylor are not the same as the others exactly but also they are and also I just plain dont like the guy#so I complain about him at any given opportunity even when its not technically as accurate or relevant as it possibly could be#I Am Flawed. its fine though dont worry about it. its called being nuanced

I say this in the kindest way possible, but I think this style of prose is more appropriate for a personal account rather than an update account. I have no idea who's being talked about half the time. 🥲
[ Tumblr meme via @mikaikaika ]
#QSMP#Philza#Edited#Phil#Let me know if this needs an additional tag#I don't think this necessitates a discourse or neg tag or whatever because I'm being silly but I'm happy to add one if folks need it#I won't post this one on Twitter I don't think because I genuinely don't want to hurt anyone's feelings#but. I feel very strongly about this. It's not helpful#I say this as a fan and as a professional writer (who also worked in the Marketing and Communications field for far too long)#The prose is nice! It's very whimsical and they're having fun! But I don't think it's appropriate for an updates account#I recently turned off notifications for QsmpEN and I'm considering muting them because half the updates just aren't helpful to me#I want to be able to speed read through the update thread I don't want to spend an additional 30 seconds trying to decipher who's who#I don't like posting complaints so I tried to make it a funny complaint#because I do think feedback is good! And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way#but at the same time: these update writers ARE volunteers#(As a side note -- I personally think anyone running a large social media account should be paid)#(I did that for a few years and it was hell. I can't imagine doing that and NOT getting paid for it)#But anyways#They're all volunteers so I don't actually wanna go all pitchforks and torches on them (which I wouldn't do anyways even if they WERE paid)#I'm just venting my frustrations in what is (hopefully) a funny way#but you're welcome to disagree! That's ok too#Portfolio

.... back on my totk rewrite thoughts so, poll time (pls read before voting o3o )
no matter how cute tulins design is, i like teba more and he had at least a little bit more to fall back on from botw than tulin did, given how little time is spent on these characters (and the time that is is just ... so flat, its all so tasteless, no flavor) hes just as much, or little really, as the champions descendants were in botw .. if even, though this game should have been the time to go hard on narrative, sicne the world was established now would have been the time to dig into the story more
im considering making teba the 'sage' (no sages in my rewrite but for understandings sake) and possibly with a .. 'backpack' tulin, they are a team and work as one (doing proper character arcs is hard to do in a game world like botw, given how isolated each area is and how little everyone interacts, id focus more on having some active troubles and dangers- team getting seperated etc. to make it feel like theres actual stakes instead of a flat one scene character 'arc' and then some baby puzzles that i hesitate to even call that)
(i still havent found a workaround for the abilities yet, botws way of doing it was very well integrated and made sense with the story, i dont want to repeat that but also dont want to have the shitty totk way, - killing a character off in the present to have them aid you in spirit is interesting only if not applied to everyone bc then it gets all too samey again, something something items in a way--- regardless of how im gonna solve that issue, i like the idea of them working together just like you are actively traveling with zelda as your companion and it will work whether i give them actual abilities or not)
#ganondoodles talks#ganondoodles rewrites totk#zelda#totk rewrite#botw 2#like i find the idea of them HAVING abilities but not being able to give them to you pretty good#bc then each dungeon and area can be more unique and memorable#i get not getting their ability would be a little sad but it might be worth it considering they are still alive and not dead like the champ#there would be a reward of course or soemthign like an item but that item shouldnt jsut be able to replicate their supposedly unique abilit#also it would help differentiate it more from botw bc its not just the same with again but worse (like totk did ...)#maybe with each dungeon you get something that helps purah improve links shiekah arm#so you might get a weaker version of the ability and then over time with doing more dungeons it will get stronger with each added#(this is stil just a work in progress ... the dungeon rewards are the one thing i have not yet had a clear idea for)#(everything else is largely done ... like the basic story and mechanics are all pretty solidly done by now ....... granted ..in my head)#like what if in the cataclysm .. or in the dungeon even tulin loses a wing and cant fly anymore#but hes more skilled with the bow than teba so they have to work together to be at their strongest#(i know i know- they fire arrows with their feet and that would be hard to do while on the back of another- WAS JUST AN IDEA)

something that will never fail to be amusing to me is when an mdzs college au needs the name of a professor, and then suddenly shen qingqiu is there
#ah yes professor shen we all know him#would love to see a fic that is like. largely focused on whatever mdzs characters are thrown into the college au setting#but you get the impression there's some kind of b-plot happening just off screen#where shen-laoshi is having some kind of weird drama with his former TA#or even just like. in the middle of class or office hours or something#professor shen's absurdly beautiful husband shows up to deliver him lunch#im imagining wwx going into office hours or something#and his brain to mouth filter completely fails him and he makes some comment like damn shen-laoshi's got game!#sqq regrets every decision he's ever made and lbh is having to remind himself that he's not allowed to kill his husband's students#anyway. i think it's silly and i enjoy it#i mostly only see it with sqq but i did read a fic once where one of the random jin kids bullying jin ling#was named luo bingbing and i was like ??#i don't think it was a reference to him but it felt like too strong of a coincidence#i think more scum villain characters should be random background characters in mdzs aus. it's very funny#sqh and jgy work in the same accounting firm or something#lqg is jc's personal trainer. idk.

I mentioned Stoutland as one of DAX's matches and Larry loves his Normal types - This Had to happen#And then the idea of how excitable Kabu and ZEX are and what conversations they could have about Pokemon and humans and just-#It all went downhill from there I really had no choice it just Needed to - so I did!#DAX doesn't really understand this whole Petting Large Dog business but it's not actively trying to eat him so that's a mark in its favour#Would he and Larry actually get along or would they brush up against each other wrong haha#DAX Very serious and work-oriented while Larry's just tired and quiet and wants to relax and eat and pet Pokemon#DAX is passionate in his own way but so blasé about humans and other aliens!#Larry something like a cat in that he doesn't really care so goes off to do his own thing - might be too alike to get along haha#I think Kabu and ZEX would get along really well though :D ZEX tries to make friends with so many people so that's not hard haha#And he would have an awful lot of ahem Learning to offer Kabu lol - but so would Kabu in turn! Pokemon knowledge!#Fascinating conversation to be had :) Maybe if they were forced on enough double dates DAX and Larry could get along pft#I almost definitely drew ZEX too short here - maybe he's hunched a little out of excitement lol#But Dexter and Larry would be about the same height wouldn't they! :0 Huh!#It was quite fun to draw Kabu's Arcanine so happy to be getting so many pets haha <3 Cute lad ♪#Finally following up on Alana's brilliant idea of VUX loving Tangela!! ♥ Zarla also mentioned VUX-Tangela vine/tendril communication and ahh#So lovely such fun <3 A specific kind of trainer-Pokemon understanding that can only be had between specific cultures! Baldur's Gate 3's Potato Chowder - RECIPE
So a few days ago, I found this recipe around the start of act 3, near the kitchen of the Temple of the Open Hand in Rivington:
[Screenshot of recipe as it appears in-game. Exact steps will be transcribed below, within the recipe.]
It looked... honestly very simple and not dissimilar from a Hungarian potato főzelék/stew (which is a very cheap and homely peasant dish I love), so I just made it for lunch today, and guys....
this soup is uh. really fucking good. I tried following it as close to the letter as possible, but since it's quite vague, I did have to improvise a fair bit- but it's very cheap and easy to make, it's warm and comforting while still quite light (there are like. NO spices in there, it's a very European-feeling dish), and I'd say it's surprisingly filling, but it's. It's potatoes, so there's nothing exactly surprising about that.
I tried to write out the recipe in a very beginner-friendly way, so even if you're not super confident in the kitchen, it should be easy to follow! ❤️
Make yourself some video game soup, it's awesome.
INGREDIENTS:
(For about 6 servings)
A roughly egg-sized lump of lard (This can be subtituted with a different cooking fat if you'd like, but I recommend sticking with lard, as it adds a nice flavor, and it's kind of the staple fat for these peasant stews.)
Potatoes (I used just under two pounds)
Half of a medium leek
Small yellow onion (or half of a larger one)
2 cloves garlic
Roughly 1/2 to 1 cup white cooking wine (optional, substitute given in recipe)
Vegetable stock (or chicken- or beef stock, or water)
2-3 tbsp all purpose flour
Salt to taste
1/2 cup of sour cream/créme fraiche (optional)
Shredded cheese and/or croutons to serve (optional)
(Recipe with transcriptions and exact steps under the cut!)
(This is basically all there is in this. Honestly.)
STEPS:
"1. Put your lard in a pot- a chunky one, mind. When it stops being lard and starts being hot lard, add any good-smelling veggies (leeks, garlics, onions) that you've chopped all thin. Please salt this so it doesn't taste of nothing."
This first step is pretty self-explanatory. I sliced the white part of he leek thinly, cubed my onion, and minced my two large cloves of garlic. In the lard melted in as chunky a pot as I've got (make sure it's not non-stick!!!), I sauteed first the leek and the onion with a big pinch of salt, and once the onion was translucent, the leek soft, and they've released some liquid (around 3-5 minutes on medium-low heat), I added the garlic, and cooked it until fragrant.
"2. When it's soft and good-smelling, chuck in any flour you've got and stir the mixture so it don't burn (note for me - it's very important not to burn it, emphasize)"
"2.5. PLEASE DO NOT LET IT BURN THAT'D BE RUBBISH"
Now we make a roux by adding just enough flour to the mixture that it starts sticking together, and looks fairly dry, but no part of the flour remains powdery. (This was about 3 tbsp for me, but since this process goes quick, I did eyeball it).
It's important to keep stirring, as this can and does stick to the bottom of a pot, but it will determine the thickness of the final soup, deepen its flavor, and give it a nice, creamy consistency. I made mine fairly blonde (light tan in color, cooked just past long enough to dissipate any raw flour smell), but it can go to a fairly dark, caramel color before burning if you'd like the flavor to be a bit deeper. (This should only take a couple minutes.)
Please do be careful- it the roux burns, that flavor will be impossible to get rid of, so.... yeah, it would be rubbish.
"3. If you're fancy and have wine (or have a generously stocked temple wine cellar nearby) add a bit of it now and cook it off. When it's done, add some wedged potatoes and a lot more liquid (not wine this time or you'll have a headache in the morning)."
We now deglaze the bottom of the pot with the wine: after pouring it in, with the wooden spoon, we scrape up any stuck pieces of flour or aromatics that there might be on the bottom.
(Note: If you don't have wine, or would prefer not to use alcohol for any reason, a neat trick is to mix about 1 tbsp of white wine vinegar and 1 tsp of granulted sugar into a cup of water, and use this mixture as a substitute for 1 cup of white wine. In most recipes, the wine's main purpose is to add acidity as well as sweetness to the dish- this trick aims to replicate those qualities, and tastes very similar in the end result. I use it often in almost anything that calls for white wine if I happen to not have any at hand. But do make sure to taste beforehand, it's very easy to go too heavy on the vinegar! It should taste sour, but not so much that it's unpalatable.)
Then, I rinsed my cubed potatoes (though the text calls for wedges, those often don't cook quite evenly!) with water to get rid of the excess starch, added them to the pot, and then covered them in vegetable stock. You can use chicken- or beef stock (which would make the soup a bit richer, heavier) or water (if you want it lighter) as well- in this last case you might need to add more salt than you'd think. (Make sure to taste- it should be flavorful, but not salty! Bouillon cubes and premade stocks often have a very high salt content, so if using that, you might find you don't need to add any.)
(It sohuld look something like this.)
"4. Cook for half an hour or so til the potatoes are nice and tender, and mash some of 'em up in the liquid. If you've got any cow products - cheese, milk and the like - add them now for extra delicious results."
From when the mixture starts to boil, it should take about 25-35 minutes of simmering on low heat, covered, for the potatoes to soften- you can test doneness by sticking a fork in one of the pieces, or gently pushing one against the edge of the pot with your wooden spoon. It should give easily at light pressure with both methods.
I then put the sour cream/créme fraiche in a heat-safe container (a mug will do perfectly), and ladled a bit of the hot cooking liquid on top of it, mixing it thoroughly- both to thin it out, and bring the temperatures closer to each other, which should help avoid any curdling. Stirring constantly, I then add the cream mixture to the soup in a thin, slow stream. (Any mildly acidic, creamy dairy product should work here- though I do think yogurt might be a bit too sour, if using that I would probably omit the wine.)
Then, as everything is done cooking and the cream is distributed evenly with no curds, I turn the heat off for safety, and using a very traditional, very fantasy, not at all anachronistic immersion blender, I blitz the entire thing for roughly 30 seconds. You can of course blend it less for more chunks (or remove some cooked potato bits before blending to add them back later), or even longer for a smoother consistency, but I did like that about that much blending left only a few, small chunks of nicely cooked potato in the otherwise smooth and creamy result.
I served with shredded Port Salut cheese and croutons on top- but this is of course optional, and I think just some nice, crusty bread would also work wonderfully!
Go make yourself a video game soup!!!!!!! It's so easy and good!!!!!!!

[image ID: drawings of gem versions of the hermitcraft recap team. pix is a dumortierite, sloy/zloy is an unakite, and lyarrah is an anyolite.]
#hermitcraft recap#gemcyt#pixlriffs#sloyxp#zloyxp#lyarrah#whyy did i decide to make all three of them gems that didn't actually appear in the show lol#i just based their designs on vaguely similar ones#pix is heavily based on zircons and to an extent the rutile twins#sloy is based on a jade bc for the first few iterations i had him *as* a jade but unakite fit the color scheme better#as well as jasper#and the gem-being-the-top-of-the-tie thing comes from the zircons as well#and lyarrah was one of the more interesting ones in terms of inspo bc the thing is.#IRL anyolite is just a less-often used name for a mix of ruby and zoisite#so i couldn't decide whether or not anyolite could only be a fusion#but the fusion of ruby and zoisite would definitely be an anyolite#and we know from garnet and the homeworld garnets that fusions look similar to the standalone gems of the same type#SO ly's design is largely based on garnet and rhodonite#(both fusions involving a ruby and 1 other gem)#whether this particular anyolite is a fusion or not is kinda open to interpretation#if she is then the zoisite gem is on the back of her neck and it's covered by her hair#i have seen variations that pix (and presumably the rest of the recap team) would be humans studying the gems#and as much as i love that idea i also want a team recap fusion so#gem designs :)

Laios fans on this website: Shuro misunderstood Laios' intentions, which can be attributed only to this character's deep-seated vile ableism and not at all to understandable differences in culture, age, education, or personal experience
An almost equal number of people: this poster misunderstood Shuro's intentions, which can be attributed only to their deep-seated vile racism and not at all to a difference in culture, age, education, or personal experience
#like my thing is I agree that people freaked out too much about shuro's very important moment of characterization#and that moment should have happened! it was really important to understanding the history of their dynamics as a group#and why they did what they did#but at the same time seeing someone be mean to a character who is largely treated as having one personality trait by its online audience#(also a bad thing)#and interpreting that as being mean because of the one thing most of the audience associates him with#isn't like a massive stretch for someone casually enjoying that media#dungeon meshi#laios touden#shuro

when you think about it clive and flora are actually perfect narrative foils on complete accident. like what's up with that. professor layton and the completely imagined literary devices
#what did they talk about when they were alone for that one segment of uf . . . humming#i'm sure this post has been made before by someone more eloquent but i don't shut up. ❤️❤️❤️#it's like the fact that they both lose their parents at a young age#both are succeeded by a large fortune#both are incredibly insurmountably lonely in a way they are not equipped to deal with#both develop poor coping mechanisms (though one notably more poor than the other . . . el oh el)#both develop a one-sided codependence on layton (or rather. more like the Idea of him. the concept he represents)#they also both spend a lot of screentime poorly disguised god bless ❤️#flora just seems to shrink inward while clive. Well#flora is seemingly willing to accept any type of mistreatment so long as she's told she won't be left alone again#whether because she can't bear the alternative or if she genuinely believes them every time is debatable#she's fine with being temporarily abandoned because she is used to it. as long as she's kept around some of the time she's fine#but clive internalizes every slight and files it away in some increasingly grandiose and frankly childish revenge fantasy#on a small handful of people that HAVE wronged him and a couple hundred thousand that never will#everything he sees is taken as proof of a worldview he doesn't even seem to necessarily hold himself#that at the end of the day is simply a manifestation of a seeping debilitating loneliness#they both have people that care for them. but not really in the type of way they need or want#i have more to say but . . . alas. not intelligent enough for it#my point: both of these characters ard the same coincidence? i think not. BioWare doing an AMA was always going to be a shitshow but like. The shit they’ve come up with? Idk man but since when have ppl listened to the “canon”. They have two conflicting codexes about Hawke’s staff from promotional material. Cailan’s age has been incorrect since DAO. They added in the Orsino boss fight “to give players something to do” with no further explanation on the Harvester form. Anders’ writer used her own experiences with her ex who had BPD, intentionally portraying Anders and Justice’s relationship negatively. Gaider loves to try to stay relevant and say controversial things, particularly about companions like Fenris and Dorian, and killing them. Ventus, also known as Qarinus in all material published up until 2018, was Ventus all along, didn’t you know? (Don’t look at maps). Redcliffe is sitting in the wrong position geographically. Haven in DAI, also sitting geographically incorrectly. Same with Calenhad Circle. And Kal-Hirol. And Kal-Sharok. They forgot what keeping a genetically similar clutch of griffon eggs would mean for the future until they included it. Breaches opened up all over Thedas during DAI. Somehow only the south had a person with an anchor to rely on, but everyone else was fine and closed them.
And that’s from the old guard writers. Not considering people who’ve come in to the corpse kept alive on 6 second promotional material for the past 10 years. Like. Dang.
#*#idk why anything they say is shocking#and there is a DIFFERENCE between the story in your head and canon#but at the same time BioWare has almost too much going on#it’s all lost#to them trying to slim it down#or they conflict continuously#they can’t do maths#idk I guess largely from outside in on ppl suddenly caring SO much more than 10yrs ago#is bc it has been a long time - I get that#but the story presented was never gonna match the one in your head#and they were going to skip things or ignore things or wave it away#and I mean. hello. human reaper. where tf did that come from as far as plot.#BioWare is cyclical when it comes to TRYING to find continuing plot points#they land on their feet with their first game#and then fall face first

*scratching at the walls thinking about how no one has adapted Peter’s college arcs in a consistent and satisfying way.*
#coffee bean gang#spider-man#I was almost asleep but now I’m thinking about how there isn’t one piece of media out there that checks all the boxes#of adapting Peter in college + the coffee bean gang + doesn’t downsize the group or combine characters#+ does everyone in a decent way even if it’s not strictly comic accurate#raimi trilogy is one of the only ones that heads pretty quickly into the college era and also involves more than just gwen or mj#and as much as I like the films it does not handle the three of them in a way that scratches the itch for me#I mean for one it’s only Peter Harry and MJ. I like those three arguably the most but man the dynamic isn’t the same#especially bc Tobey’s Peter is much more serious and quiet/awkward with negative charisma (affectionately but still.)#MJ is mixed w Gwen’s personality which was disappointing to me bc I like MJ’s weird and super vibrant personality#and Harry loses some of the ‘kind of a sweet guy but very VERY fucked up’ and relies too heavily on Harry becoming the goblin for revenge#I sound super critical of the Raimi versions qhwjrjwkr I DO like them I do but it feels like completely alternate interps of the characters#most focus on spider-man’s origin which I totally get but also. Peter’s most interesting arcs happen in college#that’s why everyone has to adapt them into the high school years#(which they can do bc Peter was largely friendless during that time and was still fighting some truly d-tier guys#in between the forming of the famous spidey rogue gallery)#I mean I wouldn’t even complain if they chose to do the high school years and actually DID those instead of pasting the college arcs on it#I haven’t watch the 90s show but I want to— does Harry exist in that one bc I know they took out Gwen#at the risk of sounding like That kind of tssm fan. the closest we got to that dream was that show#bc they WERE gonna follow it into Peter’s college years and you could see them setting the gang up#it still fell into the ‘everyone is a childhood friend’ thing so the characters could all be there but it’s one of the most bearable ones
