When you think about it the timeline in WFA doesn’t make any fucking sense. Unless - now that I think about it - WFA isn’t technically a sanitized version of post-crisis canon, but nu52 canon (which doesn’t fully uncomplicate things but would make a bit more sense). Because - and hear me out for real - if Jason (at least in season one) was 19 years old but already going under the Red Hood moniker and wearing a “bat symbol” then that means (and I’m specifically talking about Jason but the timeline stuff gets even more fucked up when you factor in Duke and other “newer” Bats) that the entirety of B:UTRH happens in one year. Hell, probably less than that.

Not only that either, but from 18 to 19 he would’ve had to have found and then formed the Outlaws (both versions considering his relationships with Roy, Artemis, & Bizz), reconciled with Bruce, met a ten year old Damian way earlier than in the comics, met Duke way earlier than in the comics (+Duke’s already Signal and has powers so a lot of story beats for him would’ve had to happen in a laughably short amount of time as well), and established himself as a hero under Batman to Gotham and her citizens to the extent that he’s automatically recognized as such.

Now, I don’t like to think about the WFA timeline too much for this exact reason, but I am nothing if not the exact type of person that would take the time out to do just that so whatever. Long story short the WFA timeline gives me a headache because it’s clearly not meant to be thought about and dissected as much as I’m dissecting it but I can’t help myself.

The new 52 angle makes sense for Jason’s personality too, not fully because he’s being sanitized in WFA (like how characters are sanitized in stuff like Justice League: Action or the Batman: Unlimited animations), but way closer a personality match than if WFA!Jason was based directly off post-crisis Jason. Yeah, there’s just no other way.

That would also explain why Cass’s uniform is the way it is in WFA. (Listen, the more I write this the more I realize that I’m probably not the first person to come to this realization, but just let me figure things out at my own speed, OK?)

Question: Is Jason 19 the entire time in the new 52 continuity? Edit: I checked and the answer is yes, but also no? Like, he ages, but the ages are kinda wonky because nu52!Jason dies at 16, but is only gone for (I think) two years instead of five like in post-crisis, but they fit a lot of story and development into those two years that Jason’s “dead” and honing his craft or whatever.

As much as I love the reading of Bleach’s ending as a tragedy, one thing’s always bugged me about it and it’s why Renji has a happy ending. Like out of the core cast (in my eyes this is Ichigo, Rukia, Orihime, Chad, Uryuu, Renji & maybe Byakuya, just cause they’re most consistently prominent in the arcs) he!s the only one that doesn’t have the easy argument that he’s settled or unhappy with the epilogue, like Ichigo & Rukia you can argue their with people that aren’t who they love, Uryuu is a doctor and alone while his friends celebrate, Chad is using his fists for profit, Orihime is still at the bakery and never got to live the dreams she had (also she was probably kicked out of home at post high school because her aunt housing her was dependant on her grades) and Byakuya is tied with Rukia being unhappy.

But Renji is seemingly the happiest he’s ever been, he’s married the woman he’s spent over 80 years crushing on and he has a kid with her. But then it hit me the other day that’s exactly why his ending is one of the worst out of the characters I’ve mentioned. When Renji actually gains some detail as a character we find out he has one major goal in life, surpass Byakuya and save Rukia from the Kuchiki’s (slight paraphrasing). But Renji never manages any of it. He fails to both save Rukia and defeat Byakuya in the Soul Society arc, firstly because he’s too scared to try to go against them and then because he’s too weak (both these goals are also largely dropped here and Renji just kind of floats along as one of Ichigo’s multiple rivals and has no more character growth or change) but Ichigo achieves both of these goals rather easily in comparison. Ichigo unlocks Bankai ridiculously faster than Renji does and then defeats Byakuya and saves Rukia.

Meaning there’s nothing left for Renji to do. Sure he could continue trying to conquer Byakuya, but he never seems to reach his level (especially going by the fact Renji’s still his vice captain in the epilogue.) Byakuya is still the star Renji can’t reach. Same with Rukia, sure he marries her but she’s still Rukia Kuchiki. Hell she’s even a captain now while Renji is still a vice captain, not only is Rukia still as far from him as she was in the soul society arc she’s even further away, he’s just the stray dog barking at the moon he called himself back in the soul society arc. But then just like his goals if you compare it to Ichigo, ichigo does it. Ichigo’s symbolism is the rain is dried by the white moon, the moon is reachable by Ichigo, we’re shown one of Byakuya’s central beliefs of who he is loyalty to Ichigo. But Renji is trapped on earth seperate, never truly reaching the star or the moon.

And with how we’re shown Renji thinks about himself he’d never let himself forget it. Every member of his immediate family other than his daughter is someone he’s separated himself from in his mind and since we never get shown anything to indicate that changes, Occam’s razor suggests it doesn’t. Somthat’s renji’s tragedy in the ending. His entire life is reminding him every goal he ever set he not only failed but someone else achieved. That’s the tragedy of Renji’s ending and really is the final nail in the coffin that no one is truly happy or anything past content in Bleach’s ending.

I love talking about reverse 1999 and how the characters act and why cause Bluepoch put so much effort into setting up the world and making it believable that these characters ARE people. They have all the nuances and inner conflicts a person has and to guess their actions you have to start by asking yourself what the average person would do or feel in their situation. I really enjoy that part of it and it also makes a much more compelling story because when they put so much effort into making everything matter the fandom and players make connections because of it. Something that might’ve been in there as an insignificant plot point for the characters becomes an important piece for the fanbase.

okay but it is heavily implied that tommy regrets the way things were under gerrard and that he was also one of the people reporting his harassment and terrible behavior i cannot at all even a little bit see him telling buck to just take whatever gerrard does and not cause problems and feel like that’s at all in character for what they’ve set up and what they set up in the begins episodes - this is not a shipping thing. when i watched the begins episodes i felt like he must have been reporting gerrard and i had no idea he was the one who buck kissed or dated or anything like that just felt like what they were telling us. he clearly isn’t happy with the person he was so i don’t know why he’d tell buck to regress and become the same thing.

if westeros was created to reflect our modern society instead of being loosely based off of western medieval society, then i think people would understand that these political marriages are for alliances, not love, and would agree that the modern lower class sentiments towards marriage are simply not applicable to these arrangements and both bride and groom cannot and should not expect love from their partner.

if our story occurred in a modern westeros very similar to our own modern society, then a lot of the obstacles our characters face would not happen because, simply put, modern society benefits from equality.

as an example, i am quite (100%) certain that the introduction of gender equality and other modern values and advancements to westeros would only be beneficial to rhaegar and elia, which means that this ideology benefits westerosi society on an individual level.

so, in this modern westeros au, if rhaegar and elia still married for a political alliance, and then had two children like they did in asoiaf, they could then peacefully divorce and write out a contract that secures both rhaenys and aegons inheritances. if lyanna and rhaegar met and fell in love while rhaegar and elia were married then the misunderstanding that sparked a war would never have happened. why? because lyanna would have a say in who she marries in this modern au. also, elia would have possibly been seeing others as well. why? because this was a political marriage and love shouldn’t be expected, so why would anyone be concerned about either party finding love outside of their marriage? plus modern westeros would have dna testing so there’s no reason to question the paternity of their children.

also, if elia had a child with someone else (in this hypothetical scenario, perhaps her lover died) and rhaegar decided to claim that child as his own while knowing that he’s not the real father in order to give this child a better life, then this wouldn’t be a problem either. why? because rhaegar’s in the know. (i’m only bringing this up bc of the rhaenyra and laenor situation. guys… laenor is perfectly aware that biologically those kids aren’t his, yet he still claimed them and loved them bc he and rhaenyra had an agreement. i do not understand why real ppl are even concerned about jace, luke, and joffs parentage. in the eyes of the law those boys are legally laenors.)

however, since asoiaf isn’t based off of our modern society and is instead a society riddled with misogyny, xenophobia and other social issues without the progress and advancements that we in the 21st century have benefited from, i will concede one thing to these antis who harp on and on about how selfish rhaenyra and rhaegar were for loving someone who wasn’t their spouse and for having a child(ren) out of wedlock.

because yes, rhaegar and lyanna’s love can be considered an act of selfishness, and rhaenyra loving harwin and having children with him can also be considered selfish.

but guess what? love in general is a very selfish state of being. you are prioritizing your partner and your desires over everything and everyone else in your life.

one of the greatest love stories of all time, romeo and juliet, is a tale of two selfish lovers who seek to be together despite the immense hatred between their families. selfless and dutiful children would never love an enemy. and yet, despite romeo and juliet’s love story ending in tragedy, no one would ever argue that these two lovers were in the wrong for simply trying to be together even though their love caused their families great grief. why? because the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets was stupid. and the story ends with the characters agreeing that this feud went on for long enough and acknowledging the fact that this petty feud between the families was the cause of their misery and the tragedy that befell them.

though the circumstances of all three love stories are different, it’s undeniable that these lovers were selfish for prioritizing their own desires over their duties to their houses.

to end this little spiel, i’d like to mention that the reason i first brought up a modern au was to remind people that the only reason rhaelya and rhaenyra’s relationship with harwin can be so decisively called selfish is because these characters live in westeros. and westeros is a fucked up society rooted in systematic oppression, violence, and abuse and other forms of exploitation in order to further the agenda of the powerful despite the harm it causes. any modern comforts and progressive ideas hinder the control the patriarchs have over their families and put a name to the bigotry expressed against these unconventional relationships. so yes, their love is selfish because being unconventional in such a backwards society is a recipe for disaster, especially since both of these relationships hinge on a woman deciding to take control of her sexual autonomy, which is a big no no in westeros since a woman’s body only belongs to her father and husband. so yes, these love stories are selfish because these characters are prioritizing themselves in a society that benefits from them losing their autonomy and harms them and their loved ones when they try to take back their autonomy.

to finish off, the reason i brought up the tragic love story of romeo and juliet is to remind people that even though rhaegar and lyanna’s love was selfish, other characters still need to be held accountable for their actions that helped to escalate this misunderstanding into a tragedy that consumed all of westeros.
