I see people making a big thing out of the ‘companions are not even asking Rook how they are doing, it’s just Solas when he is being manipulative’ twitter post.

And you know what? I stand by that one. While companions are always concerned about Rook’s well-being, there is something deliciously heavy in the vulnerability and risk attached to the fact that Solas IS the one asking directly and receiving a direct answer back.

The companions show time and again how much they care (they are even ready to pierce the Veil for Rook), but there is a heaviness in avoiding the direct approach throughout most of the game. They show care and concern by sharing with Rook who they are, by making Rook a part of their personal lives, by allowing Rook into what makes them happy: Neve shares her favourite spot in Dock Town, allows Rook to be part of the one habit that clears her mind. Lucanis takes Rook to the one place in Treviso that offers him peace and makes him reconnect with his own life, he takes Rook for a stroll in the Market as an insider, not a passerby, in hopes that what relaxes him can work for Rook too. Emmrich shows Rook the beauty of the Memorial Gardens. Davrin, repeatedly, takes Rook out for a breath of fresh air, much needed when they are drowning in impossible odds. Bellara allows Rook to mess around with the Archive, the one thing that keeps her focused when she’s navigating through her emotions. Harding spends time with Rook outside the Lighthouse. Taash takes Rook out for drinks and into their home. They all offer Rook numerous opportunities to unwind and to open up if they need to. But none ask the question directly because Rook is what keeps them together, so the answer to that question can’t be anything but ‘I am fine, we got this.’ It’s a mix of fear for what the potential answer could be and the realization that Rook won’t ever admit when they are out of their depth.

And then there’s Solas. When he checks in on Rook, it never is out of concern. It’s either because he relies on Rook to understand what is happening in the world or because he needs to make them lower their guard. And Rook can call him out on that on almost every occasion. But it’s also precisely what allows Rook to openly receive and answer that question, if they want to. Solas doesn’t depend on them, Rook doesn’t owe him anything, and that’s liberating. No need to put on a strong face because who cares if Solas is disappointed? And I think that’s such a fantastic aspect of their relationship. The distance between them, much like the rift keeping them apart, is also a source of safety for both. I am devouring that dynamic. There is something so liberating, for both probably, in the fact they HAVE to work with the other, and there aren't any emotional strings to pull or feelings to be careful about. Gloves are off, conversations are direct. Until one of them makes it personal.

They are both each other’s lifeline and ankle weight, not by choice but by circumstance.

You know what one of the Solas Banters in DAV should’ve been? Talking to the romanced companion about the romance.

Like there should’ve been a rough patch that you can navigate out of just before the big fight. Solas catches the smad looks the two of you have, if you’ve put them in your party.

-“Davrin, forgive my intrusion-“

“Mm.”

“I… am aware of your… bond with-“

“Don’t, Solas. This is between us, yes?”

“It is. But if I may… waste no time.”

“… this advice is from Wisdom, hm?”

“*Solas chuckles, clearly a little taken aback by being called that* Maybe. Avoid this one regret.”

“… you didn’t.”

Solas doesn’t reply.

“What is it, Solas? You keep… looking at me.”

“I see what Rook sees in you, Bellara Lutare. Your mind. Your spirit. Both are very bright. I am, however, trying to determine what you see in him/her/them.”

“That’s- that’s none of your business.”

“You are right. It is not…”

Then quieter: “When I left Rook in the Fade, he/she/they whispered your name. Not for help… like a prayer. You are important to him/her/them.”

“I… he’s/she’s/they’re important to me. But I couldn’t-“

“Protect him/her/them… I understand. Do you think he/she/they love(s) you less for it?”

“… that’s… why are you saying this?”

“If I could, there is one person I would wish to see right now. Someone I do still believe I am a danger to. But I long to see her all the same. Avoid my folly.”

“… the Inquisitor.”

Solas doesn’t reply after that.

“Professor… you seem troubled.”

“I… ah. Hm. Well. Yes. I suppose I am.”

“… I will not pry. But… I know the feeling of the face you wear. Whatever keeps you from what you want… ultimately it is unimportant. Especially if… if someone wishes to take it from you. Remember, being loved well should be answered in kind.”

After a long silence in which an understanding look is implied, Emmrich

“I will bear that in mind. Thank you, Solas. You are still a Spirit of Wisdom.”

“… scarcely.”

“Spite, you have withheld something from your host.”

We don’t hear Spite speak, we only hear Lucanis. He sounds stunned and then relieved.

“… I… oh. You… you do? Solas. I… why?”

“I have… recently become a bit of a romantic.”

The implied conversation is that Spite not only doesn’t mean the romance Rook harm, but that he adores them also. Allowing Spite and Lucanis to be of one mind where they’re concerned.

I admittedly don’t know the others that well but yall get my point. Also that was kinda fun!

DATV + Finding a Baby Headcanons

go ahead and disagree but this how I imagine the Veilguard being if they randomly came across an abandoned baby and brought them back to the Lighthouse

Neve : Knows how to take care of the baby. Immediately goes into caretaker mode. Is also the most active in trying to find where the baby comes from. Does not do baby talk. The baby probably lives in her room or in Rook's room.

Bellara : Loves babies. Does not know how to take care of one. Will give the baby a ton of affection and will read to them. Will communicate in Baby Talk for weeks

Taash : Also knows how to take care of the baby. Very gentle. Wears clothes pin on nose when its their turn to change the baby. Teaches everyone how to swaddle the baby and talks shit to whomever does it wrong. Does not do baby talk.

Harding : One of the biggest worry-warts when it comes to the baby. Second-guesses herself a lot but does her best. Likes to show the baby plants and what plant is good for what. Goes between baby talk and regular talk.

Emmrich : Another big worry-wart about the baby. Does not know how to take care of the baby but is reading and trying to follow Neve and Taash's example. Does baby talk when alone with the baby. Also reads to the baby.

Davrin : Does not know how to take care of the baby and tries to avoid any type of baby duty when possible. Loves making the baby laugh. Hates changing the diaper. Also active in trying to find where the baby comes from. Finds himself slipping into baby talk randomly.

Lucanis : Does not know how to take care of the baby. Will put the baby on the counter or table in a basket while he's cooking. Sings Antivan lullabies. Makes puree foods for the baby. Will randomly slip into baby talk.

Spite : Talks a lot of shit to Lucanis about the way he takes care of the baby but is not actively helping in any way. Especially when it comes to changing the baby.

Assan & Manfred : They are so excited to be big brothers. Will argue with their dads about spending time with the baby.

thoughts on who of the veilguard companions would be able to build a bed from ikea:

harding - fine sleeping on the couch actually

neve - sleeps on the couch while procrastinating building the bed for 5 months, but ultimately can build it, maybe finally catches a break in the case she's working on while doing so

bellara - takes her thrice as long, but the bed can fly now

lucanis - sleeps on the couch bcos he doesn't deserve a bed

davrin - that one friend you go to when you need help building a bed from ikea

taash - needs a special bed that's fireproof anyway

emmrich - no, but tries his best and is glad to have this new wonderful experience
