Okay, I'm going to try to explain a concept called purchasing power parity by something called the Big Mac Index.

A Big Mac costs $5.69 in the US.

A Big Mac costs ₹230 in India.

Now, if you can buy a burger in the US with your money, you should be able to buy a burger in India with the same money.

If 1 US Big Mac = 1 Indian Big Mac

$5.69 = ₹230

$1 = ₹230/5.69

$1 = ₹40.43

This means that 1 US dollar (USD) is equal to 40.42 Indian Rupees (INR), right? So if you have $5.69 with you right now, and you go to India,

You convert that $5.69 to INR and you get ₹230.(5.69 x 40.43 = 230)

Enough to buy one Big Mac in India too.

This is the same if you have ₹230 in India and you got to the US, you get enough to buy one burger.

But wait. This is Burger exchange rate. What is the actual exchange rate?

Wait.

If you have $1 with you right now, you get ₹86.29 in India? ($1 × 86.29 = ₹86.29)

So if you have $5.69 with you right now, you get ₹490 in India? ($5.69 × 86.29 = ₹490)

That's enough to buy two burgers!

But

If you are someone in India going to the US. And you have ₹230, enough to buy one burger in your country. And you convert that to USD

What???

So you get only $2.67?

Not even enough to buy one burger in the US?

This is why having one price (of a single currency, say USD) in multiple countries is not great. It gets a little wacky too if there's taxes or import duties involved. In my personal experience:-

Just look at the delivery costs!! ₹39 locally versus ₹2,126 globally. And the reason its ₹2,126 is cause the price is probably 23.58 EURO which is being put through the converter to display in INR. (The ₹650 delivery cost one is a local company that imports so the shipping is definitely lesser than if you bought from a directly from a foreign store, but still substantial!)

Official manga has become so much more affordable since viz media decided to tap into our market. But I remember a time when the only buying option was to order on a foreign store site. If you want you can factor in having to setup PayPal (which is not used here) or some equivalent to make the purchase too.

So in conclusion,

i think the most annoying part of dog food discourse is how many people will act as though proplan/hill’s/Royal canin diets aren’t extremely and prohibitively expensive and that THAT is the reason so many people look into healthy alternatives.

People complain about corn being in the first five ingredients on most of those feeds because, regardless of other factors here, that is not an expensive ingredient. But it makes up a large chunk of the dry food. So the dry food should be fairly affordable, right?

Oh… with tax you’re spending about $100 for one 45lb bag of food where the third ingredient is wheat and the fourth and fifth ingredients are corn.

Oh… well! It’s slightly cheaper! But the second ingredient is rice, third is wheat, fourth is corn, and then fifth is poultry byproduct. None of those are very expensive so this just must be the low end cost of dog food unfortunately. The vets recommend it so surely that means prices aren’t inflated, right?

Oh? This one has similar ingredients with the only real difference being no corn? And it’s half the price?? Well surely that’s just a fluke.

Oh. Oh no.

This one even has CORN in it and it’s $20 cheaper?? Wow!

Like listen at some point I don’t care if your dog food has the ichor of the gods in it, I’m not spending $100 every five days if there are cheaper options with just as many “good” ingredients in it. If you think I’m a dog abuser because I can’t afford this overpriced garbage, that’s too bad. I don’t care. My dogs are perfectly healthy with the food I give them. Great weight and great coat. People giving dog food recommendations that aren’t those top three hyper-expensive dog foods aren’t trying to epic own those dastardly vets half the time, but I really don’t blame the ones who do lose trust in vets when the only heartworm protection they recommend lately are expensive triple-action brands like Simparica Trio that costs $120+ as opposed to the other heartworm protections that are only about $40-$60 on average, which is still cheaper even if you add on a $20-$40 flea and tick protection separately, and only recommend dog food that costs $85+ a bag even if your dog doesn’t have specialized dietary needs.

Those top three foods are GREAT at making competent prescription diets, I don’t deny that. I do still have to criticize the pricing of those prescription diets though because I have spoken to DOZENS of people who had to pull their pets off of a prescription diet and struggle to find something comparable because they couldn’t afford the food, and that’s terrible! These are not poor companies! Purina, Royal Canin, and Hill’s can ABSOLUTELY afford to lower their prices to make their food accessible to people who need it for their animals but they don’t. They probably never will. Because at the core they are run by greedy corporations. It doesn’t matter how many good nutritionists are on board if the company is run by people who put profits over customers and make the food impossible for people to afford.

I feel like books and videogames have such a personal aspect you just can't get with other mediums, like their kind of a Forever Media, where one game or book no matter how old will still feel Fresh years later, they'll even go through a few re-releases and special editions, some will get tv shows or movies or comic book follow ups too and idk you just don't get that with movies, even with re-released and special editions or when the theatre runs an event for a series or studio, videogames are forever, movies feel kind of churned out and if they do have a follow up it's just to make bank, theirs alot more creative freedom with a videogame. Not to say all movies and tv shows are soulless corporate greed I just mean that games and books are a semi-accesable medium to get into for the fun of it and create things people will love for years to come, as well as moderately accesable to consumers as well

Listen. I know people might disagree and I know no one asked for my opinion, but on this I’m giving it because I think it’s something that more people should be talking about. At least enough of us to get it noticed.

Make healthier foods the cheaper option. I’m someone who likes to eat healthy, I like to take care of the body I was given. But as someone who is going to school full time, eating healthy is really hard financially. It can he very stressful.

People talk all of the time about “the problem of obesity” and how no one really “takes care of themselves anymore” (you’re beautiful/handsome no matter what you look like and don’t let them tell you otherwise, it’s what’s on the inside that matters the most) but they’re not making it easier for people to get foods that are actually beneficial to them, and provide them with basic nutrients we need in order to keep us as healthy as possible.

You want a healthier population? Make healthy foods the cheaper option.

Eating healthy should not be a luxury reserved only for the upper crust of society.
