My zine, 'Label Coining as an Artform', is finally done! Transcript/Image ID underneath (warning: it's long). Printed version in a reblog.

Page 1: ‘LABEL COINING as an ARTFORM in large text. ‘Naming: Coming up with the actual word can be tricky. Generally, labels with lots of elements get more leeway with length. It’s important to check that a label isn’t already a word as well.’ Next to this text is more rough, dark green text reading ‘Premade suffixes + prefixes help! And latin (for some languages) as it’s possible to intuit meaning!’ Around the text is a few examples: ‘-vesil’ ‘-musica’ ‘an-’ ‘quoi-’

‘Flag making: Also known as vexillology, this is a pretty big deal. It’s also the most fun for me! You develop a really good sense of color from spending so much recoloring the same three stripes.’ Next to the text is 6 versions of the same pride flag, each with slightly different colors, with a 7th final version with a symbol.

‘Symbol making: Most flags don’t have symbols, but they’re good for groups of labels under a certain umbrella, or just if you have a really good idea.’ Next to this is rough, dark green text reading: ‘I drew three semirealistic flowers for a flag and ended up only using one’ with sad face. Under it is a drawing of a daisy, a pink coneflower, and lavender, which is circled.

‘Descriptions/formatting: Explanations can be artistic in their own right, and formatting is fun to mess with: many people have their own style. Make sure it’s accessible: add image IDs and plain text where applicable. There are a lot of good resources online!’ In dark green text is the phrase ‘Accessibility over Aesthetics’ with an image of a key on top and sparkles below.

Underneath the boxes in light green text is ‘Note: in the right context, any of these can be optional!’

Page 5: ‘If it wasn’t clear, I think this is AWESOME’. Awesome is in large text with yellow radiating lines. Underneath is ‘I’m a MOGAI coiner myself (generally) with about 65 coins at time of drawing. Using something I made, I wanted to demonstrate what a label coining might look like!’ Underneath is four versions of the same pride flag as well as a description, with ‘flag!’ ‘stripe meanings (I don’t normally do these)’ ‘symbol’ ‘name’ ‘pre-existing format’ and ‘experience’ labelled. The description reads ‘[Image ID was here] Human non-conforming (HNC). Human non-conforming (HNC, similar to gender non-conforming) is an umbrella label encompassing all identities and subcultures that somehow incorporate nonhuman elements in any way.’

Page 6: ‘The thing I love most about the label coining community is just that- the community! The way coiners and users interact, as well as how coiners can work together, is wonderful. There are 5 large words each with an associated doodle.

‘Requesting’: A figure leaning on forearm crutches has a speech bubble with yellow shapes exploding out of it. Another figure is taking shapes down from the bubble and forming it into a ball.

Ahoy friends! I've been thinking a lot about my old pal the Revenge recently while working on a few art projects, and I suddenly remembered that we have the website of an art director from S1 of Our Flag Means Death, Samantha Avila, where the specific paint colours used in the exteriors were given.

Decided I'd track down the listed paints from the original companies (Benjamin Moore for most, Sherwin-Williams for the Glitzy Gold) and make myself a Procreate palette, then thought I should share it with everyone! Here's a link to a Drive folder that includes this image, the downloadable swatch/palette for Procreate (edit: and now for Illustrator, too!), and a PDF of the key colour diagrams of the Revenge (see below).

These colours are for the exterior of the ship, but I'm pretty confident they're repeated inside Stede's cabin as well (you can see more cabin details in the submission to the Art Directors' Guild Awards in 2022/23, which they won!)

The first 13 colours in the palette are the specific colour swatches, and the rest are light or dark shades of those, per the light/shadowed examples in the images and the delightful digital dollops that the Benjamin Moore website provides. The only colours missing are the custom stains for the unpainted wood. Only one of those (Rich Mahogany from Minwax) is listed with the number #225- that corresponds to Red Mahogany, which is here:

I hope this helps! I'm looking forward to incorporating some more specific and deliberate Revenge colours into my art going forward, too.

Post-Revolution DBH Headcanons: Android Culture Part 3

Moar android cultural snippets for your perusal. As always, feel free to use but show me b/c I want to see where this all goes :)

The soft sciences have an absolute field day because of android cultural practices. While they were created by the STEM fields, which I’m sure Detroit had tons of job openings for pre-revolution, the soft sciences have a renaissance in the wake of android sentience becoming recognized. All of a sudden there’s a massive void of research into android psychology, sociology, the economic impact of giving them wages, etc. Cultural anthropologists flock to Detroit to witness the emergence of a new culture from a new sentient species firsthand. Grant money comes flooding in from government (how do these new citizens fit into our socioeconomic structure?) and private sectors (if androids are now entitled to wages, what do they want to buy with them? Inquiring marketers want to know). Androids are now entitled to get degrees and become scientists themselves—what’s the best way to create accredited education programs to qualify them for careers when they can just download a science.exe program? There are Questions to be Answered™, and where there are questions, scientists will go. They’re not a breed known for common sense. Fly to an active warzone to study the impacts of conflict on childhood development? Sure, why not. Drive to an industrial wasteland city under martial law that just stopped in the middle of committing genocide to document the cultural practices of the new sentient species conducting protests? Fuck yeah, it’s Science Tuesday, get in the car Anthropology Intern Guy we’re going to Detroit!

The Acespec/QPR scene sees a sudden boom. Androids aren’t inherently sexual beings. Though many do desire to engage in sex as a form of sensory exploration/input for their processors, or for the benefit of building emotional intimacy with a human partner, they fundamentally don’t have a libido derived from reproductive needs. CyberLife programmed the intimate partner models to have humanized “desires,” but they may choose to reject that when they deviate (other androids may incorporate bits of that programming just to explore what it’s all about). Some are built with ken doll anatomy and just don't care. Basically, the androids that do want sex often want it for different reasons than humans, and a large portion just…aren’t into it. Fortunately, a lack of desire can apply to some humans, too—so all the acespecs suddenly have a slew of potential queerplatonic partners who aren’t likely to get entangled in messy sexual or romantic hangups (am I projecting at this point? Probably!) Sudden availability of thousands of cuddle buddies who really, actually, don’t want to have sex makes post-revolution Detroit the San Francisco of ace relationships.

Android memes and social media. Androids develop internal networks for socialization using the remnants of CyberLife’s updating framework. They share their android-unique code-based art forms, dumb memes about things their human coworkers did, code patches to help accomplish different tasks, etc. There are subnetworks specific to certain model lines (think sort of like subreddits, but instead of topics it’s things like a/PC200 and all the male police models are using it to bitch about how the humans expect them to answer dumb legal questions). The memes involve android-specific oddities, like someone will say “I had three hundred processes running and one line of code got crossed and spit out 9f32e4ba8c237fec91 all of a sudden #processorfail” and then a hundred thousand androids will translate that to three hex codes and send off an image file to each other with the three colors and somehow that becomes an android meme for trying to run too many tasks at once and getting overwhelmed. Humans that see it ask, “uh, is this a new pride flag?” or, “do androids celebrate Mardi Gras?” And the androids start laughing. They now have freedom to express humor that humans have no chance of understanding. It’s a cultural in-joke.

Emojis require an update. The 2039 additions to the Unicode emojis includes a skin tone option for hand gestures and faces that’s a replica of bare chassis for the androids who don’t use synthskin. Other major android-additions are the three LED color rings, a thirium pump, thirium pump regulator, and other prominent android biocomponents, a droplet of thirium, and two hands clasped in interface. Rather than reacting with a thumbs-down emoji an android might use the red LED, or they might use the interface one instead of the hug if someone’s upset.­

Xenian is the xenogender/xenic equivalent to lesbian and veldian. There are multiple ways to interpret and define it, but the general idea is queer sexuality/attraction in relation to xenogenders. It can mean:

Queer/gay attraction to xenogender people, exclusive or not.

Xenogender loving xenogender.

Gay xenogender people.

Any other way the user would like to define it.

I tried to incorporate the colours of the xenogender flag into the second flag, while the first one is colours that I personally correlate with the concept of xenogenders.

It's kinda minor ig but kinda shows how out of touch with the queer community Viv and ig the rest of her crew are:

Mammon.

Why is he ace? I guess yeah just because can be your answer but. As an ace spectrum person and an artist....

Why not demi? Why add the spade on top of a character that already uses the demisexual card suit as part of their design?

Better yet, why not aro? His colour scheme is already damn near the aro flag.

Why not, from a design standard, already use the colors or themes you've incorporated into a character that connect so perfectly with a specific queer group?

Or if you genuinely wanted him to be ace, why not give him a whole new spade themed outfit instead of just making his usual outfit the ace colors and slapping a spade on his chest? It gets too busy with the diamonds in there as well. Why do nearly all the other characters get unique outfits but Mammons feels so lazy?

Just feels like the googled ace flag, grabbed the colors, happened to see a spade pop up among the images titled "asexual symbols" and went "yeah that's good enough. representation accomplished."

I feel like Vivziepop just does the barest minimum of research when it comes to most if not all of her characters and story.

As someone who's also on the asexual spectrum myself, I do find it a bit lazy (and a bit telling when the only asexual people are a minor, which, nothing wrong with that, and a fat person that everyone is supposed to hate and find ugly)

Propaganda : With the mascot being our lovely Queen Jellie, Scar's beloved pet and winner of Mojang's contest to get her into a part of the game, Scarland incorporates the whimsy everyone wishes Disney still had. The strip is populated by guests (including the hermits and default skins, inclusive of races and disabilities) making it lovely with flashing fake-creepers and even a street performer playing the drums. There are even cameos from the Empires crew and the infamous hero HotGuy! Feel free to visit the Trading Card Game arena, any of the stores selling snacks and drinks, and take pictures with the mascots distributing cute hats and balloons. At dawn and dusk, our lovely CEO of Scarland, Scar himself, welcomes guests and sends them off in the evening. You, too, can download the Hermitcraft map and visit Scarland yourself with any friends you would like to bring with you.

La Cité Médiévale

Propaganda : I love that fucking village so much everyone need to see it. Look at the way the streets flows between the houses, this thing is so well constructed it looks like it could be an actual medieval village, a problem a lot of builds have that this one doesn't, it's believable! All the houses are able to coexist while not being copies of each others, but variation, so when you look at the build from an outside scale, it seems like a city, but the details make it that when you are exploring it on ground level, it become an adventure! And that castle and Montains are just so cool looking! | everyone should go and check out aurelien_sama holycube season 5 vidéo "une saison en timelapse" or at least the start of it, it's a timelapse of all of his builds in the season, including La Cité Médiévale (you can even see the flags change from belgian to french since they had a little prank war going on with those)! Everything in the image was made by him and a few friend, its no just a village, but also two castle and a full montain range, the build itself took almost a year to build and was made in survival, and how gosh does it look amazing

Human non-conforming (HNC, similar to gender non-conforming) is an umbrella label encompassing all identities and subcultures that somehow incorporate nonhuman elements in any way. WIP #8 was actually a draft for ranpoe week that I speedran bc I found out about it on day 1 (T-T) It was inspired by the "crime scene" prompt! I wanted to write a no abilities au and tried to incorporate it :)

I also wanted to try writing smth from Ranpo's POV bc its been a while aslkdjalksdj

Ranpo sighs as he drops a pile of police reports onto his desk, falling into his chair with a huff. It’s way too many pages for such a simple case—the file itself is thicker than his forearm!

Of course, he’s already solved the crime, so he knows that the report is intentionally obtuse. This criminal lines the police’s pockets—they’re just doing whatever they can to avoid investigating him. Which, apparently, includes framing an innocent man. It’s no use against Ranpo of course, but he can admit a lesser detective might have fallen for it.

And to stall for time, they're claiming that they can't move forward with the arrest because he “hasn’t looked at all of the evidence.” 

Idiots. They’re just making it obvious that the criminal is in league with the higher ups. Since they won’t be of any help, he either has to give up on the case or do it himself.

Normally, Ranpo would consider something like this beneath him. It’s easily something Dazai or even Atsushi could deal with, even if they’d be much slower about it than him.

But these idiots had the audacity to lie to his face! Did they think he was a moron? He's definitely not letting that slide.

The room is empty, aside from Kenji, who is staring at the fennel plant with such intensity that Ranpo almost feels bad taking his attention. Well, not really. He needs to actually get to the criminal to arrest him, after all.

“Kenji!” Ranpo calls, spinning his chair around. “We’re going on a case!”

“How do you know he’ll be there?” Kenji asks as they leave the agency, his straw hat bouncing slightly as he walks.

“He’s a coward—he won’t want to show his face until someone else is framed and arrested,” Ranpo scoffs, taking a frustrated sip from his ramune bottle. “Which means I have to do the work.”

“What did he do?” Kenji makes a left, and Ranpo follows suit. He’s tempted to ignore the question, because explaining obvious things makes him want to tug his own hair out, but something about Kenji makes him feel guilty if he doesn’t. Ranpo sighs—it’s the downside of taking him anywhere. The upside is the free food that he gets just by being with him, because somehow Kenji knows just about every single person in the city. Ranpo couldn’t imagine remembering that many people’s names. 

“Stole some money,” Ranpo says. “He keeps getting away with it because the police don’t want to arrest him.”

“Why not?”

“He’s paying them.”

Kenji frowns, “I thought police in the city are supposed to stop people like that.”

“They’re supposed to,” Ranpo nods, “But to them, money is more important than the truth.”

“Oh,” Kenji murmurs, downcast. Shit. Now Ranpo feels bad.

“But we stop things like that from happening,” he adds, somewhat abruptly. “Which is why we’re important.”

“Oh!” Kenji brightens, and the guilty feeling in the back of Ranpo’s mind disappears. The boy hums happily, a new skip in his step as he continues leading Ranpo through the city. 

They stop, and Ranpo cranes his neck upwards to take a look at the building. It’s definitely new, and its distinctly modern style is somewhat off-putting compared to the wood and steel made apartments nearby. It looks almost gaudy, which tells Ranpo they’re in the right place.

When he pushes the door open, he’s assaulted with the strong scent of cleaning supplies, as if someone had spent the last few days pouring bottle after bottle of bleach onto the floor and letting it sit. Gross.

The reception desk is empty, which he flags as unusual. Sure, Ranpo intentionally arrived close to lunchtime to avoid unwanted obstacles, but he didn’t expect the building to be empty. Even for a slow day, he would expect someone to be around.

Ranpo walks towards the desk, feigning boredom even as he finds the body he’d predicted would be on the floor behind it. Damn.

“They must’ve cleared out the place,” he mutters to himself, turning to Kenji before sighing as if he'd been wrong. (As if that could ever happen.) “There’s no one here. They must have left faster than I thought they would. I'm gonna take a look around, but you should get the police and tell them to come here.”

Kenji nods dutifully, saying a quick goodbye and leaving the building. Ranpo's glad he's not one to question orders. Sure, he isn’t one to coddle anybody, but Kenji's a bit too young to see something like this.

He kneels down to the body, already annoyed, but pauses when he feels a pulse. That's... unexpected. It’s steady, so the woman must have been knocked out recently, but she isn’t injured badly or bleeding. interesting.

Ranpo leans her a bit more comfortably (and visibly) against the desk, because it wouldn’t do for the police to get all the way here and not have a reason to investigate. Kenji's persuasive enough that they should come even without a real incentive, which is why Ranpo chose to bring him along in the first place, but it helps. Well, that and the free food.

He notices a chart of residents on the desk, each leading to a different office phone.

That’s his criminal, at least. But Ranpo doubts that he did this to his receptionist, which means someone else is probably in the building with them. He listens quietly for any footsteps or noises, but the hall is silent. Ugh, more work for him, then.

At least the building can’t be populated much– not if no one noticed what happened with the receptionist. That and it would be stupid to knock out every single person in a packed office, not to mention exhausting.

He stands in front of the elevator, tapping his foot impatiently as the doors open, creaking all the while. Seriously, they could afford all of this and not nice elevators? At least it doesn't take long to reach the fourth floor.

Ranpo finds the conference room 4C with little effort and promptly throws the door open. He isn’t letting Tatano notice he’s here and take the opportunity to escape– even if it means alerting whoever else is nearby that Ranpo is here.

Though he might be a bit too late for that.

Ranpo almost groans when he sees one man standing over the body of his target. The knife in his hand is still bloody, but even from where Ranpo is standing, he can tell the cut is clean. His phone is in his hands immediately.

“Please don’t call the police!” the man blurts, and the absurdity of the statement stops Ranpo in his tracks.

“...What?”

The man raises his hands, though one of them still holds the knife, so the action isn’t as harmless as Ranpo assumes he was going for. His hair is a deep brown, and his bangs fall in front of his eyes, blocking them from Ranpo’s sight entirely. Strange. A mask covers his mouth and nose, but his words aren't muffled in the slightest.

“I just mean– um–” the man stammers, “He was a really bad person?”

Tbh that felt more like a Ranpo character study than anything else lmfao I also just really wanted to write Kenji :) I love him so much he's such a ray of sunshine

Essentially in this au the Guild is still a thing but instead of an ability organization they're just plain old assassins? I wanted Poe to be more of a vigilante that eventually works with the ADA (side by side, not as a member) It's not as fleshed out as most of my aus, but I'm still having fun with it :))
