i do appreciate the way that we tumblr users have evolved our language to discuss our feelings related to The Character/The Guy. you used to have to just say he was hot or he was making your ovaries explode or he was a precious cinnamon roll even if he looked bad or was just kind of standing there or whatever. now you can say things like “the creature” or “he looks so sopping wet here” or “i want to chain him to my radiator” like it’s just more inclusive and adaptable to the situation

#38 (Fic idea you're most excited to get to?👀)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH THERE ARE SO MANY OMG IMMA LIST

Ok first I'm really excited to finish up the marriage proposal au I'm writing where Ranpo says that if Poe can manage to surprise him with a proposal, they'll get married, but I keep being mean to myself and adding more scenes lmao

There's also an idol au I want to write bc I watched kpdh and loved it so much, but unfortunately my knowledge of idols is limited to ensemble stars so I'm struggling a bit 💀 anyway that one is a fic where Poe is an ex-idol/singer turned manager to Lucy, a newer idol (Poe disappeared from the music scene after a loss in a competitive performance wink wink) and Fitzgerald (his boss lmao) signs him up for a returning musicians/singers/idols (I can't decide if its just singing or actual idols tbh) event bc the Port is bringing one of their most famous retirees (its Kouyou!!) and the Guild can't risk losing their fame. Ofc, when Ranpo hears that "Lenore" is back from hiatus, he immediately tracks him down and says they should make a song (it's more dramatic than that but I'm trying not to make this paragraph longer than it already is lmaooo)

I'm also trying to rewrite the Kamui arc from Poe's POV but bc I love making things difficult I actually started from the Guild's defeat so ig I'll be writing every single scene until the vampire incident (and I'll probably keep going after that tbh)

Then there's a soulmate au I desperately want to write where Ranpo has brown eyes like in the manga but wears green contacts like his eyes in the anime to fit in with other gifteds (bc think of all the ability users with interesting eye colors??) But bc this is a soulmate au (and poe covers his eyes) poe spends all of his time looking for someone with brown eyes and (almost) misses ranpo completely, and ranpo doesnt know poe's actual eye color and he's too scared to find out,, Idk I care about them a lot or something. Anyway I saw someone (spaceace it might have actually been you actually. wait.) post smth about how they changed Ranpo's eyes in the anime and I was like I CAN MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF THIS

But as for the one I'm most excited for that I haven't really started, I really want to write a messy and dramatic battle of the bands au and throw in all of my favorite hcs and ships lmao

kunikida vogue?? is dazai going to sign kunikida up for vogue without his consent????

THAT WOULD BE SO FUNNY.. unfortunately it's not but now that you've said it I kind of wish it was alskdjalkjsd I'm literally imagining one of those fireman calendars but ADA themed which Dazai presents as a very real thing that the agency should be doing in an elaborate scheme to get pretty photos of Kunikida printed out aslkdaslkdj

I kind of need to write that actually 😭

But this fic is like a snapshot fic of Kunikida's moments with the ADA and the ppl he cares about bc I love Kunikida and he doesn't get enough credit lmao

It was originally going to be a bit different and centered around a Kunikida hc where the reason he writes things down is actually bc he has memory problems and he's terrified of forgetting the people close to him, but the fic wound up being a happier one and I figured I'd save the angst for another day 😭 Either way, Ranpo gets Kunikida a camera so he doesn't have to worry about forgetting their faces, and that idea just kind of stuck and developed the whole rest of the fic

So now the fic is just different photos Kunikida takes with people in the agency over the 4-ish years he works there (I hc he joined 3 years before canon, but I haven't read the light novels so I might be wrong) so the 4 years would cover pre and post canon? And then I went wild with it, so I added Poe, Sigma, and Aya (I might add Bram and Ueda, but we'll see) bc they're all very special to me

I want to give two snippets for this one, bc they're smaller, so the first is when Kunikida gets the camera (which still follows the kunikida bad memory hc bc I'm lazy and haven't decided what to change) and the second is when poe gets his picture taken bc I think its really funny

“We live in the age of the internet, Kunikida-kun,” Ranpo says, shrugging. The binder lays closed on his desk, and he isn’t sure he wants to open it. “You don’t need to write things down to remember our faces.”

Kunikida freezes, slowly meeting Ranpo's gaze. Everything in his tone says he’s teasing, like usual, but the glint in his eyes makes it obvious that there’s truth in his statement. Ranpo’s back is to the door of the agency, and Yosano isn’t even in the room, but he feels horribly, monstrously exposed.

Probably sensing that he isn’t going to respond, Ranpo taps on the binder, “I got you some photos to get you started. Use them if you want.” Then, he stretches, turns around, and says, “Happy birthday, Kunikida-kun.”

A little too late, he manages to find his voice. “Thank you, Ranpo-san.”

Curiosity wins out, as it usually does. Still, he opens the binder like it's a live bomb, hands trembling, and finds the faces of the agency staring back up at him. Some of the photos are candid, like the one of Yosano and the president trying to coax a street cat with treats from the corner store, and some are posed, like the official agency photo they took back when Kunikida showed up at the office for the first time, at the president’s request. There’s no order to them, no categorization by size or color scheme, which should be a nightmare but only makes him smile wider.

Oh. He's smiling.

Kunikida’s hair was shorter, then, because he hadn’t quite gotten the courage to let it grow out. He'd still been new to teaching, after all, and he didn’t need to give the other professors a reason to call him out. Not that they would have, he realizes now. His glasses in the photo are different, too, because he'd dropped them trying to apprehend a criminal on the first case he was ever assigned and they shattered beyond repair.

He had forgotten about that.

Yosano's kept the same haircut for as long as he’s known her, which is helpful. Ranpo has too, for the most part. The president looks a bit different, a bit older, but Kunikida suspects that's a result of running an agency like this one for so long.

The infirmary door slams open, “Ranpo-san!”

Yosano stands with her hands on her hips, face scrunched in mock displeasure, “Did you already give him his gift? I said we were going to give them together!”

“You said,” Ranpo argues, pulling a candy from his pocket, “I never agreed.”

“You—” Yosano lets out a shrill hiss, “Fine. Fine!” 

She turns to Kunikida, apologetic, if a bit miffed, “Sorry about that, give me a minute.” 

He hears rustling as Yosano steps back into the infirmary, and it only takes a few minutes for her to find what she’s looking for. It’s a black gift bag, the paper kind, with a tag attached to one of the handles. She looks satisfied as she places it on his desk, right next to the open binder, and Kunikida remembers something else.

“I never told either of you when my birthday was.”

“Nope,” Yosano agrees, “But you did put it on your application form!”

“That’s a violation—”

“It was only the three of us when you first joined, Kunikida-san,” Yosano grins. “And we don't even have an HR to complain to now! So go on, take your gift!”

Kunikida sighs, but even he can tell it’s fond. The bag isn’t heavy, exactly, but it’s weighted, and he carefully places it on his lap. There’s no tissue paper, so he can see inside immediately.

“A… camera?”

“Obviously,” Yosano says, even though in Kunikida’s opinion it isn't very obvious at all. “We can’t exactly give you a photo album and nothing to take photos with. It’s open, though, because Ranpo-san wanted to take some photos to start you off.” 

Her tone is a bit apologetic, which doesn’t make sense either because this is the most thoughtful and generous gift he’s ever received in his life, and he really hopes the choked up feeling in his throat isn’t visible on his face. He knows it is, though, because Yosano’s smile turns sappy, the kind of smile she wears when they get to the happy endings in their ADA-mandated movie nights.

He jumps when Ranpo takes the camera right out of his hands, hopping up onto the desk and holding his arm out. Yosano huffs a laugh, moving to stand right behind Kunikida’s chair as Ranpo calls, “Smile!”

...It’s an objectively ugly photo. The top of Yosano’s head is out of the frame, and the angle makes them look disproportionately small. Kunikida looks incredibly confused, his eyebrows furrowed and mouth open to tell Ranpo to wait, which he obviously doesn’t. Ranpo calls it a “selfie,” and Yosano tells him to never take one ever again. 

And if Kunikida rearranges all of the photos in the binder that night just to put that one first? That’s no one’s business but his own.

Kunikida winds up uploading Sigma’s photo onto the official agency database, mainly because they didn’t have a photo on file other than from their police report, and Kunikida didn’t particularly feel like putting a mugshot on the agency website. It makes him realize something else, though.

…Which leads him to this.

“You’d like to take a photo of me?” Poe asks, sounding confused and a bit frightened. The raccoon on his shoulders makes a curious noise.

“Yes,” Kunikida nods, “We have a photo of every member of the agency online, mainly because Dazai-san decided that for some reason we needed to go digital—” Kunikida stops himself mid-rant, because continuing would surely keep both of them here for far too long. “—No matter. Anyway, I realized that we don’t have a photo of you.”

Poe stares (or Kunikida assumes he does, because he can’t really see the man’s eyes) before smiling awkwardly.

“I’m sorry, Kunikida-san, but… I’m not part of the agency?”

Kunikida frowns, and Poe scrambles for a response.

“Not that I’m not flattered! I just—I don’t want to waste your time, because I’m not a real member, and while—”

Kunikida holds up a hand, and Poe quiets almost immediately, “Poe-san, we have your application. It was approved after the events of the vampire incident.”

Poe tilts his head, just enough for Kunikida to see one eye blink at him, “What?”

“Your application. Ranpo-san gave it to us, saying you were taking Karl to the veterinarian because he was ill—”

They both freeze. If there were a pen in Kunikida’s hands, it surely would have shattered.

Poe is the first to regain his composure, but he still sounds utterly horrified as he says, “I never filled out an application.”

“Ranpo-san committed identity theft,” Kunikida continues, just as appalled.

He can feel his headache coming back with vigor.

I might've posted the second one already, but it's still one of my favorite scenes, even if I'm not quite finished with it :) So far, I've written scenes for Yosano, Atsushi, Aya, Dazai, Sigma, and Poe, but I'm hoping to get everyone in the agency eventually :) This is supposed to be for rarepair week (Kunikida&Everyone) but tbh I have no idea if I'll be able to finish it in time. aku is so used to being rivals with atsushi and fighting over every little thing rooted in the desire for dazai to acknowledge him that he starts somehow pushing the need to be acknowledged onto kunikida too becuz atsushi likes it when kunikida acknowledges him if that makes sense

so aku is always like im gonna prove myself better than atsushi to dazai

but becuz atsushi likes being praised by kuni, combined by the proving myself better, aku starts partaking in activities kuni would approve

akutagawa, breaking into the ada to show kuni that he completed all his paper work ahead of time
