clanmew-ish question here:

if a human were to ever listen to different cats speak clanmew, parkmew, etc. (different dialects) would they be able to tell the difference? does it sound different to them? had say, a human who owns a cat then later encounters a clan cat and heard them both speak, would there be a difference in the kittypet’s dialect and the clan cat’s dialect that the human can actually notice?

are the humans able to decode / kinda of understand what the cats are saying if they pay attention to say, erin’s project? say one cat keeps saying “Krrrp” at a stone then would the humans figure out that “Krrrp” is the cat word for stone? and if they do, can they figure out other cat words? and finally, if they can, can they “talk” to cats like pointing to a stone and going “Krrrp” and having the cat actually understand them?

It's EXACTLY like cetaceans. The noises don't hit human ears quite right unless you're extremely familiar with the sounds a certain pod makes. Orcas have "accents" and you can call a dolphin by playing back a recording of its name, though we haven't proven actual grammar and language yet.

Clanmew is not discovered until sometime around 2030 or later, though, despite the project starting in 2008 when a cat attacks a bulldozer and sets off a chain of events that finally allows a program to get funding. Other languages aren't discovered until much, much later.

Generally though, in-universe, humans have a hard time speaking cat words and vice versa. It's not impossible, but it takes a ton of training and most housecats are just as laidback and uneager to please as their real counterparts.

(Though out of universe, it is possible to speak Clanmew and I make sure all words are technically pronouncible. Because it's more fun that way.)

funeral practices dont come easily for him. he wasnt made to mourn. every death should be celebrated, after all. at the end of all things, thered be nothing left to mourn and no one worth mourning for. but dirge loves, and he grieves, and thus, he mourns.

it is an awkward, bumbling thing. funerals are for the living, after all. there is no body to bury, and he cannot even ask orin if she would want him to mourn her. cant ask how shed want to be remembered. if she wants him to remember her. the entire ordeal is nothing but his own ego, his own desires, his own projections. more guilt on top of it all. but he cant do nothing. cant let her go unremembered

so he theres a lone grave marker, overlooking the chionthar. the river always helped him find peace. its less a resting place and more a place to remember her (dirge knows where she is. there is no rest where shes gone)

i think that a month before his birthday/her death anniversary, dirge picks an art medium at random and spends that month trying to make something in it, and then takes the end product to her marker. leaves it there to show her his progress. and i think he spends the morning just talking. about how his life is going, what hes doing, what hes been thinking about. if hes remembered anything new. explains how he came out. talks about his regrets, his apologies, how much he wishes things could have turned out differently, how much he wishes bhaal didnt steal their lives from both of them. guilt and grief and shame and self indulgence and guilt all over again. doesnt know if shed be happy to be remembered when there was no one left for her, or if shed think it was just one more self serving gradiose gesture. he kind of suspects the latter, but he cant bring himself to stop.

its a private affair. goes by himself in the early morning. he wont ask anyone to mourn a monster. he wont deny thats what she was. but they were monsters together. he didnt deserve the second life he got but he has it anyways. orin may not deserve to be grieved but he loved her anyways. he doesnt ask minthara to come, or to help. wont ask her to remember her torturer. minthara lets him grieve a past he'll never recover, because at the end of it all, he chose her over himself. sacrificed everything, his life, his past, his sister, his power, just to keep her from being victimized at his hands. so if he wants to mourn a monster, she wont stop him. as she well knows, hes made a habit of loving them anyways.

Here's the current draft for Thalamhan's map, including the names of all four cities and Danuas's location! Things are most likely going to change in the future but for now, this is the layout. It's not entirely accurate, for one the scale is probably bound to change and the map presents the colony as very vertical when it's not. I'd probably need to make it in a 3D software for it to be the most accurate it can be, but that can be for another time

When Danuas tunneled into the planet millions of years ago, the series of interconnecting cave systems she left behind would become Thalamhan. Early Thalamites would found Danann, the capital city, and during the Branching Era centuries later, they would expand upward toward the surface, founding the other three cities as well as many smaller towns and villages. Thalamites also live along the tunnels connecting each settlement to another.

Danann is the capital and cultural center of the colony, home to the Sacred Grounds. Beneath it is Danuas, accessed only by the cityspeaker through an entrance known as the Well of the Titan.

Loc Faore is the agricultural capital, a city built around a large lake of the same name. The settlements that surround it are along the streams that come from the lake, home to most of Thalamhan’s farmers.

Astorea is known for its high population of smiths and metallurgists. Its nickname is Little Danann, as it has the second largest cultural scene in the colony, particularly textiles and art.

Tollana is unique for being a mostly vertical city, so most of its population are Thalamites with flight based alternate modes. Many scientists and engineers including some from Danann have residences here, as it is the closest city to the surface, perfect for researching the planet and sky themselves.

The dark regions that surround the colony are the Darklands.
