she wore a white dress that day. it was elegant and silver stars were sewn in it. her blonde hair was cascading down her back, a thin silver necklace around her neck, her engagement ring on her finger, glowing on her sleeved hands, her veil covering her face.

delicately taking a hold of it, narcissa pulled it over her head and looked at herself. silver dusted against her eyelids, her eyelashes long against her cheeks, her lips soft and full, two strands of hair framing her face beautifully. she was older now, she was going to do what she had to do.

but was it what she wanted to do? she was beautiful, undeniably; but how could she feel beautiful if it was not alice waiting for her, if it was lucius to whom she would declare her undying love?

this was it, though. she had written the end of it herself. alice's lips had been bitter with regret and salty with tears the last time they kissed. all it took was one last, regretful "i love you", one last "this is for the better of us, alice, my love" (although neither wanted that, although all that narcissa ever wanted was to run away with her; they had talked about the possibility oh, so many times) and they had ended, parted ways, as easily as that; an ugly betrayal on narcissa's part, an ache of alice's heart.

she knew that, when she would step down the hall, her mother would be waiting for her. her mother, who she had been so scared to disappoint, would want her to make her family proud. her father would want her to carry on the name of her; narcissa, such a beautiful name, riddled with the selfishness of narcissus himself, however; but narcissa had been selfish too, hadn't she?

but what about what she wanted? had she had a choice, she would tear away her dress and smear her makeup and run through the august rain, maybe she would find alice again. maybe she could stop lying to both of them, maybe she would kiss alice again, and she'd taste like honey and love, real love. maybe they would be happy, at last.

maybe in another life. because this time, narcissa set her hand on the doorknob and, glancing one last time back to the life she could have had, she opened the door, hoping that, maybe, alice would be the one waiting for her.

but alice had long forgotten her. regret was bitter on narcissa's tongue; their story had been bound to have an unhappy ending, hadn't it? because they never wrote stories about them; narcissa had signed her name that wasn't hers, an anonymous author of another book that wouls be forgotten, one day.

i know this is a reference to the tl4j ot au, but do you ever think about how Ahsoka feels knowing that she -- Anakin's padawan and pseudo-sister who fought alongside him for years and was one of the people -- failed to get through to him? not even failed, she DIED in one timeline. but luke got through to him, luke brought him back to the light and anivader didn't kill luke, he saved him. he and luke barely ever met and were always enemies but he got through to anakin. do you think ahsoka feels jealous? or do you think she wants to feel jealous but every time she looks at him all she can see are the best bits of his parents and how can she POSSIBLY feel anything but love for him?

the wangxian + a-yuan "dads with an adopted son" thing is fine and enjoyable in fanfics honestly but I think we as a fandom are really not utilizing the idea of all of them in unconventional familial structures enough. Like, canonically it wasn't so much that wwx was a-yuan's guardian as that a-yuan was being raised collectively by the wens and wwx was adopted INTO the larger wen family. And lwj got attached to him through that. A-yuan just has these very attached weird uncles/older cousin figures that aren't related to him by blood at all but keep sticking around.

Just think of a modern AU with a lot less death where lwj does as he does in canon and keeps showering a-yuan in gifts as much as he can and when wwx is like "aiyah lan zhan you're gonna spoil him. Not everyone is as rich as you! What's his family supposed to say if they can't buy him all the stuff you do?" lwj just goes "Hm". And from then on out every year once a-yuan's birthday is near the extended Wen family members (well. the ones that are invited that is. No one wants wen chao at a birthday party) wakes up to a wechat payment from lwj.

When your father tried his best to provide for you but he worked all the time and even when he was home he was either tired or stressed and he’s always liked to get drunk to relax and cheer up. When you know he values work ethics and respectability so you grew up to be capable and quiet. And when he says you’re like him you’re sort of puzzled, does he really know you so little, or does he know himself so little? But you like the feeling of your father ruffling your hair so you accept it, and still you stand next to your mother just as silent and just as stoic as her during family gatherings. He leaves again and again and when your mother leaves him nothing changes, really. You wonder if it’s more telling that you know him better than he seems to himself or that you don’t know him as much as you wish you did, or that you don’t think about him all that much these days. Looking at the notes of that Cass name poll and I don't mind people preferring Black Bat for certain reasons, but saying 'Batgirl is not unique/her own name' is not a good argument to me. Yes, it's not unique; that's the whole point. It's a legacy mantle. The power comes from the fact that Cass is linked, through Batgirl, to the people she cares about most. For a girl who was forcefully isolated, who was denied a name (and therefore denied a legacy), Batgirl is the first thing that was ever hers. And Batgirl is not, and has never been, tied to Bruce; the point of the mantle is women carving out their own spaces, forging their own identities regardless of what others have tried to make them. Saying Batgirl is not a good mantle for Cass is also denying what she brought to the name - under Cass, Batgirl became a legacy mantle. Batgirl irrevocably changed her, and she irrevocably changed Batgirl. Preferring other names is completely fine, but it's important not to undermine what Batgirl meant, and continues to mean, to Cass.
