i feel like we also got to address character C and character D and how person C and person D (...and E and F) interact with them because there's still a level of harm that media can inflict, and that depends on the intentions of the author and the type of fan who engages with them.

character C is a character is an offensive caricature part of an otherwise standard show. they are played off as normal through the show, but everything about them is harmful in terms of how the audience engages with them and how they continue to portray (blank) group in offensive lights. the author may not realize that character C is offensive, but to the audience - especially the group that they reflect - it's glaringly obvious. person C recognizes the harm that this character can cause but they also find themselves liking this character in spite of it. person C's engagement with character C is still positive, but due to understanding the problems with character C's portrayal, most of their engagement with the character comes in as mitigation (rewrites, redesigns, etc.), while also acknowledging vocally what is wrong and never condoning it.

person D also likes this character, however they do not recognize what is wrong and continue to play into how the piece of media portrays character C all the way down into intentionally/unintentionally adding in more offensive material because "it fits." person D can go one of a few ways: denying that the text is offensive and continuing to act blindly; acknowledging that it's bad and learning from it to follow person C; or doubling down on their beliefs and even sometimes finding tokens of the targeted group that agree with them to use them to justify their uncritical love of character C. a person D who takes the last route often doubles down on their interpretation and finds themselves at odds with a person C for their denial of harm. they also use the argument that because it's fiction, that they should be allowed to enjoy it when a person C is still enjoying it while acknowledging the arm it can cause and trying to work around it.

you can also extrapolate this into a person E, who likes character C because of the harm they cause. they see character C as emblematic of (blank) group and are often attracted into fandom spaces by a person D who creates enough of a fuss from being asked to be careful, critical, and respectful when engaging with the sensitive topic of character C's design and existence. a person E often first appears as a defender of a person D who comes into conflict with a person C to portray person C as someone who is trying to take away their right to like fiction, while reinforcing the uncritical love of character C, who perpetuates the harmful portrayal of (blank) group. This causes person D to double down, and slowly be dragged into spaces that person E occupies, where they curate harmful ideas through this media (see: how antiblackness manifests in many fandom spaces and how white supremacists and nazi-types take uncritical (mostly white) fans and turn them against black fans in these kinds of conversations).

character D, on the other hand, was intentionally made to be offensive or represent an offensive idea (see: Rita Skeeter being an early reflection of Rowling's transphobia; the entire dichotomy of AoT, Eren's ideology towards the end, and how titans are designed + later revelations about them) and it's difficult to remove them from the views of the author (Hajime Isayama is a staunch Japanese imperialist, and has gone on record to mock and discredit the existence of comfort women during Japan's occupation of Korea; his characters are named and modeled after notable Japanese imperialists). no matter which way you look at them, they are offensive and harmful, and often times they exist to expose uncritical audiences to their rhetorics (often eugenics, transphobia and general queerphobia, the great replacement theory, antisemitism, antiblackness, and pro-surveillance state sentiments (the last two especially in copaganda media). things like misogyny definitely come up a lot, but they're often red flags for much deeper issues that the author fully endorses; if misogyny is the focus here, it's a lot deeper than just shallow sexism and goes into femicide, the glorification and sexualization of sexual assault, and the reinforcement of "traditional" values. antiblackness functions similarly in that it permeates everything shallowly, but the levels of it can be a red flag for deeper issues - like dehumanization, justification for violent hate crimes, etc. - but im also not qualified to get into this too deeply because thats not my lived experience). they can look kind of like character C, but the important difference is that the author did this intentionally. a place of ignorance can be extremely offensive, but the intentionality of it tries to sneak by audiences and trick them into agreeing with them.

person C may like the character in theory, but it's impossible to deny the reason why the character exists as such. like with character C, person C may try to mitigate the damage, but this more comes in the form of talking about how character D is handled in the source material. there isn't a lot that can be done by these fans because again: the character is meant to harm. they may play into a bit of uncritical fandom, but for the most part just talk about them. person D does not recognize the harm that is does and acts similarly with character D as they do with character C. the problem is, character D is meant to cause harm where character C likely wasn't. so when a person C tells a person D that character D is extremely harmful and you follow those three ways a person D could go, you now have someone who is parroting talking points that may even be antithetical to their own views. they're usually the targets of authors who write character Ds so that their rhetorics get broadcasted to audiences that wouldn't knowingly engage with them.

to bring back person E, this is exactly the kind of person and character they're looking for. people who really like character D are usually like person E - or, they use character D as a way to publicly air out their -isms with the plausible deniability of fiction. entirely depends on the angle of character D. if they're an eren, then person E is one of their biggest fans; if they're a rita skeeter, then person E is using character D to air out their grievances about (blank) group through them and they loathe character D.

we can also introduce person F here. they more align with person C, but the crucial difference is that they will not engage with character D on the grounds of the harm. they can acknowledge the writing all they like, but they will never like, engage with fanworks, or anything unless it's criticism of the character and the author. if anything, they think person C doesn't go far enough in condemning the harmful nature of character D by the fact they still engage with fanworks involving character D and the media they come from as person F views positive engagement (even when it's just a tiny bit, like in person C's case) as tacit endorsement. they are explicitly against people like person E, and often try to work to educate people like person D into moving away from that and more towards person C (ideally further), but often are at odds with person D for the reason that they will double down on fiction and fall in line with person E who reinforces their "right" to consume all fiction. Because the important thing to remember here is that character D was made intentionally to broadcast the author's shitty viewpoints. This means the character is meant to cause harm, as media perceptions do skew worldviews, and it's more complicated than just how people engage with a character in fandom spaces. To reconcile with a character meant to cause harm is a difficult thing, and naturally there are people who choose to divest entirely because of the tangible harm it can cause (again: see copaganda and the perceived rate of solving crime (i think it's around ~75-80%) versus the actual statistics (~30% if you're lucky and more often ~16%); see also the military entertainment industry)

And yeah! It's all extremely complicated because people, their beliefs, media, and media literacy are all really complicated! It's way more than just if a bad character is portrayed as bad and everyone reacts to them as bad - sometimes that bad character is the protagonist and the author wants us to view them as a hero and not a genocidal freak like Eren Yaeger is. Because no, that is not how you portray a "fall from grace", given how many people associate him with sigma male goals and im not joking nor using that term out of nowhere - i recommend this video on the subject, but here's the specific part about eren and the idolization of him and a very fun roast since this is about role models for boys, unhealthy power fantasies, and how anime ties in with all of this. FD's got two other videos on this ("two" and "other" are two different links) on his side channel. Eren's just one of the worst case examples of this since his base full of uncritical enjoyers who don't realize that they're in community with literal fascists who idolize Eren's goals. there are other extreme examples that at least thankfully arent as common as the usual stuff (like Wyll's treatment by Baldur's Gate 3 fans and specifically Astarion fans - links to their wiki pages for people unfamiliar with the characters but tl;dr: wyll's a black man, a sweetheart, and literally has the folk hero background; astarion is a white man who tries to kill you upon first meeting, dislikes it when the player helps people, and is frequently manipulating those around him. it's more complicated than that obviously - especially astarion's motivations - but it still stands that people take wyll's traits and act as if astarion is like that, villainize wyll, and the cherry on top is that wyll has 8 hours of content while astarion has the most content out of all of the companions and the devs won't add more for wyll while astarion (and the others) continues to get more. as an aside, lae'zel - a mean woman who isn't conventionally attractive by virtue of being a fantasy alien - was made to be Less Mean because people didnt like her...not being nice, and fans frequently boast about killing her).

Intentionality is really crucial here, and the way people behave with characters says a lot. You're allowed to engage with not-so-great characters, but you also have to keep in mind other factors such as your own biases and the author's biases - whether they got in intentionally or not. to summarize really quickly:

character C comes about from an author's own ignorance to their own biases about a marginalized group. they are harmful, especially in the fact that the text treats this as normal, but their treatment is like any other character (but depending on the marginalization, they may not receive as much screentime as their less-marginalized counterparts, or are more likely to be antagonistic). authors may or may not be receptive to criticism - those that are will adjust character C in future media or even retcon and republish old media, while those that arent may just ignore criticism or double down and attract people who agree with those harmful tropes

character D is intentionally placed in the text by a bigoted author, and their offensive nature may be either overt or covert. the intention of this is to spread their rhetoric to those that consume that piece of media and introduce it to as wide of an audience as possible - one of the most common forms of this being copaganda portraying the police in a positive light and marginalized people as threats to white society (see: how frequently white women are the victims, while black men or arab men are portrayed as extremely violent and often are the perpetrators). it's not like character A who's mostly just an asshole, or character B where they're bigoted but that can serve a purpose in the narrative: character D exists to do harm - be it as an offensive caricature, or as a bigot to be idolized - through their actions in the text and how that reflects real world issues, or how the text informs people on how to view real people that are like character D (eg: idolizing the police or military, or viewing all black men as thugs). the existence of character D is problematic, but what often exacerbates this issue is when people argue that because they are fictional, they can't do any real world harm. if that were true, then we wouldn't be pushing back against examples of minstrelsy in media or continued use of blackface in fiction. positive representation in media is important and also proves that media has an impact on real people - you can't just say that it doesn't affect the real world suddenly when the portrayal is negative. negative, harmful portrayals do impact people just as much as positive ones - if anything, they impact people more when they're negative. to engage with a character D is to engage with the stand-in of the author's views, and to stand by their reason for existence is to agree with the author who intentionally made them that way (again: people who think Eren's right).

person C is someone who acknowledges that characters can be problematic and tries to engage with them as best they can. they try to give the benefit of the doubt in cases like character Cs, and often try to reconcile with canon in whatever way they can to mitigate damage. while character D is harder to reconcile with, they will still talk about the problems of character D while still engaging with the media that character D is from. they acknowledge harm, talk about harm, and will critique their favorite media while still enjoying said media - even if the character they engage with is intentionally or unintentionally a harmful stereotype.

person D is someone who refuses to engage with media critically and take characters like character C and character D at face value and will often defend them and their right to like them. they do not view them as harmful, and will often expand upon the character without thinking about what other harmful tropes they may be adding. a person D can go a few routes: continuing in ignorance or choosing to remain ignorant, doubling down on their views and arguing that it's not actually an issue (and even going so far as to find tokens of that group who agree with them to back them up), or stopping and considering their actions and taking more after person C. the second route can often lead to them becoming more like person E, even without realizing it.

person E is someone who recognizes the harm in these characters and embraces that because these characters line up with their way of thinking and their world views. they prefer a character D to a character C, while often portraying character Cs as worse than in canon. a person D doubling down on their right to like character Ds will often attract person Es, and they will attempt to pull person Ds further to their side. these are thin blue line people who love cop shows; these are antisemites who love Attack on Titan and Hogwarts Legacy; these are transphobes and literal nazis that get giddy at seeing Rowling becoming more extreme in her bigotry with every passing day. if you are in community with a person E, you need to examine why that is.

person F is someone who recognizes the harm that character Cs and character Ds cause in the real world, and while they will openly criticize character Cs and their authors, their main targets are character Ds. a person F will talk about character Cs to try and educate people on harmful tropes and often fall in line with person C here, though they tend to more focus on the author and the harm this can cause to try and get it to change (rather than keeping that change in fanworks only). a person F will talk about character Ds, on the other hand, to get people to drop them. they view the harm they cause as more important to address rather than their own fandom interests. these are people that will abandon media when they introduce a fascistic character to idolize, or when they continue to play into offensive tropes even after being made aware that the author was doing it. they care more about impact than personal enjoyment in fandom, so they measure things in terms of how the text and metatext can impact the audience. where a person C will continue to read AoT while talking about its harm, person F abandoned the franchise well before it ended and only keep up with it from a distance to discuss its continued harm. they often don't think person C goes far enough when it concern character Ds; they can often be at odds with person Ds because of how person Ds prioritize their personal fan experience over harm, while person Fs prioritizes harm over their own enjoyment; and are antithetical to person Es. this does not mean that they don't enjoy media like a lot of people love to accuse; they just would prefer to drop something they like once they learn the harm that it causes - it's mitigation just like person Cs, but to a much more drastic degree.

yeah, you are allowed to like things. and yeah, who and what you like does says something about you as a person. but the problem is that the third factor - real world harm - isn't discussed much, especially with how people engage with things that cause it. because to like and engage something that causes harm is to perpetuate it. you can try and reconcile with the issues in that character or piece of media, but a lot of people ignore it. and to ignore it is to create a space that lets in people who thrive on it and seek that stuff out - your person Es.

character B exists for a reason and the text criticizes them. the text may not criticize everything, but still shows they are meant for critique. character D does the same things as character B, but the text portrays them as correct and that you should like them. person B will like both regardless and end up a lot like person D, but the both of them are susceptible to being pulled further into bigoted ideologies by the existence of person E who seeks out things like character D and anything that looks like them - like character B, and character C.

we need to examine things outside of the framework of "character is bad and text portrays them as bad" more often. it's not as simple as that. there are a lot of things that show someone doing something would generally be considered immoral, but the author agrees with it so it's portrayed as good. there are things that are portrayed as bad, but when you pick apart why it's bad you suddenly realize they're bad because they're marginalized - or, they're a standin for a real world group and made into the bad guys (eg: how many games have "barbaric" "tribal" enemies (like moblins from LOZ or the hilichurls from genshin) which are just offensive anti-indigenous caricatures, or how goblins (especially in harry potter) are used to perpetuate antisemitic sentiments and conspiracy theories). a fascist can be portrayed in a sympathetic light or have their ideologies be repackaged to sound appealing. a civil rights advocate can have their views warped to make them look like a threat to the white majority and be portrayed as an antagonist often by playing into stereotypes around "barbarism" and violence. there's a difference between having a fascist be a hero and is never condemned (jjba, marvel's zeemo), having a fascist be weakly criticized but be considered sympathetic or even your friend when they're an unrepentant fascist (many characters in ffxiv, this is literally the plot of hetalia and so much nazi chic), and having a fascist be held accountable for their actions and sometimes even maybe working past what made them fascistic to begin with and have them stop being one (terran emperor philippa georgiou from star trek discovery i adore you) - and that difference is the intention of the author in creating that character, the intention behind portraying their ideology for a wide audience, and what ends up happening to them in the end. An author can even kill their fascist off and still be in support of them because they frame it as martyrdom and try to make you feel bad for the character (jjba, ffxiv) - so it's not at all simple.

This is why being critical of the stuff you enjoy is important. No one is saying don't enjoy villains, and I'm certainly not because I'd be a hypocrite. What I am saying is: consider how the characters - protagonist or not - are being portrayed and how it relates to real world harm. Consider the intentions behind them, the impact they have had, and how they can be used against marginalized groups to hurt them and change how others view said group. Again: you are allowed to like things but what you like and defend says a lot about you. I do not disagree with OP. I just feel that the facet of harm and intention behind said harm needs to be considered because you may be putting investment into a character you don't realize is harmful (or you're ignoring is harmful). They don't even have to be a villain in the story to be harmful because again: look at copaganda and the military entertainment industry.

What you like has impact outside of you. How you engage with it impacts others around you. Some people try to mitigate, others try to ignore, while others still double down and get solicited by people who intentionally seek out things that support their bigoted viewpoints.

When the character is just an ass and the text treats them as an ass, that's not an issue. When the character is bigoted for a reason to explore and deal with, that is also not an issue. But if you find out that your blorbo is the focus of critical discussion because they were written to be a harmful stereotype/a means of idolizing bigoted rhetoric, you need to ask yourself this: are you willing to take the steps to mitigate harm - even if it means not engaging with that character or piece of media again - or are you going to continue on as if nothing's wrong and risk alienating those around you that are impacted by the harmful ideologies that are inseparable from this character/media?

What I'm not saying: Don't like villains. What I am saying: Every character - regardless of if they're a protagonist or antagonist - has the potential to cause harm because of the author's biases or bigotry. It is on you to recognize that harm and mitigate whenever possible, and choosing not to reflects on you as a person. You still can like villains. But how you like them and for what reasons says a lot about you, and people may choose to avoid you if you decide that your "soft feelings over the imperial leader working to colonize what is now the empire" are more important than understanding why people are uncomfortable with you, your blorbo, and their rabid uncritical fans.

You're allowed to like villains. What you like reflects back on you. You need to take real world harm into account when you engage with media, because what villains you like reflects on you very differently based on the real world harm that those villains can cause.

hot take but i think that "fictional characters are fictional and liking or disliking them have no real life effect" and "the way you treat certain characters can be an indicative of your character in real life" are statements that can and should coexist

example: character A is violent and makes misogynistic comments. they're still charismatic and their arc is interesting to read/watch. person A acknowledges that the character is bad but they still enjoy consuming content from the character and they do so unapologetically. they're allowed to like the character, especially considering that literally everyone the character has harmed is also fictional. they don't pretend the character isn't violent, or misogynistic, they just like the character despite that. they post about it constantly. this is a neutral action that shows nothing about person A.

character B is a white man that makes racist comments, treats a black person in the show badly and gains money through anti-ethical means. they're still charismatic and their arc is interesting to read/watch. person B claims the character is flawed but overall misunderstood and all their actions are entirely justified. they're allowed to like the character, especially considering that literally everyone the character has harmed is also fictional. person B claims the black character that character B treated badly either had it coming or overreacted. all of person B's favorite characters are white men. person B goes out of their way to justify that all of their favorite characters are actually misunderstood and good people, and more people should like them. this shows that person B likely has some favoritism for white men.

just. you're allowed to like fictional characters even if they're awful fucking people but. and im not sure why this is controversial. the way you interact with media says something about you. this isn't necessarily a bad thing. does this make sense please

Cooking and cleaning...absolutely not. I do like to think he'd be good grilling meat...but his diet is almost exclusively meat and he just eats it fresh from a carcass so...

He'd probably laugh at you for eating a salad. I personally don't think he'd get involved with someone who doesn't eat meat. If he does he'd probably try to force you to change your diet.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?):

He's just straight up leave without a word. He wouldn't say anything to you, he'd just disappear and you wouldn't see him again. It's a habit of his. If you managed to see him again after that, he would tease you about being heartbroken and scold you about who he is and how you should've known better.

F = Fiancé(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?):

I don't see him being into marriage. I do think that if he is sorta sleeping with someone, he might remain with them but in a silent, non-official way. Don't bring it up or he will retract a lot from you.

He wouldn't want his partner to be with anyone else if he is with them though, like I said, he's a pretty territorial dude.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?):

Sabretooth is extremely rough by nature, so gentle is...not exactly something he is familiar with. Physically he's just so large, so even touches he might not mean to hurt will hurt. He might try to grab you without meaning to be rough and it just is due to his size and strength.

Emotionally he is just as rough. He never speaks about feelings in a mushy way. He always blames habits on his instincts or primal nature.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?):

Hugs are hit or miss. He doesn't care about receiving them, he will accept a hug and reciprocate with touching your back or head, but fully hugging back I don't see him doing as often.

Hugging him is like hugging a massive teddy bear, he's so big, and he's naturally warmer than most people. When he does wrap his arms around you, it feels very secure without the hard pressure of squeezing.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?):

You'll never catch him saying it. Sabretooth isn't one to express his lovey dovey feelings with words, but he rather does so with his actions.

Letting you be close to him should say enough. Sleeping together, letting you call him by his name, etc.

He will bring you dead things sometimes, as a way to keep you healthy. Things like deer or rabbits so you can cook them and keep yourself fed. If you don't eat meat, he'd still do it anyway.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?):

Sabretooth doesn't get jealous, but as I mentioned, he is extremely territorial. He doesn't like when other men are around you. It triggers him to become more possessive of you.

If he catches the scent of another man on you, he will move close and seem like he's snuggling you, but in reality he is rubbing his own scent over you to get rid of the one from the stranger. He gets really possessive of you when this happens too, and he wants you to be with him at all times.

If the scent is too strong, he will mark you, and he isn't subtle about it. He will ensure you can't cover it up.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?):

Sabretooth isn't a kissy guy, but when he does, I feel like they'd be rough and they'd leave you breathless. He takes and takes, kissing and biting, plus those fangs of his would leave you with a bloody lip, (he licks it after).

He might rather lick, he likes licking the nape of your neck or the side of your neck. He also nips which are his way of kissing. I can also see him biting onto your hand or arm when you touch him, like sitting close on the couch. He doesn't bite hard to bleed or hurt, but firm enough to hold you in place.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?):

Nope.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?):

He is very cat-like so he is naturally more active at night. Mornings can either be spend with him sleeping, or he's still energized.

If you make him food, he will gladly eat it.

Sometimes he is out hunting in the mornings and he comes back with a kill, holding an animal in his jaws or wiping his mouth with the back of his arm from freshly eating a meal.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?):

Like I said above, he is more active at night. So he likes to be out and about. He likes walking around his 'territory' (where his cabin is), and hunting. On nights in, he will sit or lay with you to do whatever. He's pretty open to doing anything, he likes being scratched since he's a pretty hairy guy. Definitely a quality time person.

If you are sleeping, he will sleep curled around you. When he breaths, he makes deep rumbling sounds, almost like purring but deeper. He sleeps closest to the door incase something happens, which is another subtle way of showing he cares.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?):

I don't think he's going to be a very open guy about everything, but he certainly will be upfront with you if you show interest in him. He'd be open about who he is, what he is, and how he is. He wouldn't beat around the bush about his nature, and if you are willing to accept that, then you can't be shocked if he does something in the future that is 'bad' because he warned you about it prior.

I feel like he might make up some lies about his past or childhood if you asked, he might not want to reveal it all to you. It would take a loooong time before he was actually honest about it.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?):

Sabretooth has a bad temper, naturally, he is more primal so he is in tune with his aggression. It's shown in almost every iteration of him that he is prone to aggression and violence very easily.

While I don't think he would harm someone he is 'partnered' with, he might accidentally or in an aggression fit where he doesn't actually realize he does it. He might say things he doesn't mean, or purposefully say something to hurt you. Once his temper calms, he might apologize indirectly by doing something nice or being unnaturally more gentle that day.

He will learn to be more patient with you as your relationship develops, so he tolerates you much more than anyone else.

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?):

I don't think he would make it his mission to remember a lot of little things, but it would also depend on what you tell him. If you get triggers from things like trauma or anything relating to it, he'd probably remember those. Or if you told him about a bad relationship, he'd keep that in the back of his mind in case you cross paths with that ex.

He might remember things like your favorite foods or animals to eat (if you eat meat ofc), and bring you those when he goes hunting.

He will selectively remember things, it all just depends on what it is.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?):

I think he might remember back to when you first met, I can see him teasing you about how naïve you were to let him in, and how sweet and innocent you seemed to be for being kind to him. But secretly I think he likes to think about that a lot.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?):

He is the epitome of protective. No one is gonna mess with you if they know you're with Sabretooth. Just his presence before a lot of mutants and humans freaks them out. Sabretooth will not hesitate to kill in order to protect you.

If you ever ask him about being protective, he will tell you it's a 'territory thing' but he doesn't want to admit anything else to you. Imagine a male lion and he sees his lioness around other males, he reacts about the same which his immediate reaction is to attack.

A subtle way he protects you is sleeping closest to the door, he patrols around his cabin before bed, and he gets his scent all over you if you leave to go anywhere.

Sabretooth himself doesn't need to be protected, but he'd find it cute if you tried to protect him since he's so massive compared to you.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?):

Sabretooth isn't super sentimental. He's more of a subtle quality time type of guy rather than giving you gifts or saying something meaningful. His idea of a good gift is a dead deer on your porch.

I think if the day means a lot to you, he'd at least try to make an effort to spend it with you. He'd probably just go along with whatever you wanted to do.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?):

Aggression. Sabretooth is insanely temperamental. If Logan shows up anywhere near his cabin it's like all logic and critical thinking goes out the window and it's a near death match.

He lives like an animal, while he has a cabin and all that, he isn't super concerned about technology or anything of the sorts. If you want a tv or anything modern, you have to get it yourself. Some people might not find that to be bad, but when his cabin doesn't have an oven or a stove, or running water....it gets a little concerning. (He eventually gets that for you).

He tends to lack empathy, so if you ever get emotional or try to explain something to him that he might've done to upset you, he might not react or take it in the way you expect. He isn't super open to being tender.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?):

Dude licks himself clean so I don't think he is super concerned about his looks.

He will shower at your request lmao.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?):

I mean...maybe? It's hard to say. Sabretooth can be with or without a partner, I don't think he would feel incomplete, but since he can become so attached to you via territorial instincts, he might feel more angry without you. Like he doesn't have something to calm him down, so if you had a fight and you needed space, he would probably become more aggressive in general.

I think overall he would enjoy having a partner. He'd NEVER say that though. Without you around he would be more sulky and tend to me easier to rile up. He'd want space from everyone and he'd be more solitary than normal.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.):

Sabretooth smells like a mixture of fur pelts, pine trees, wet moss, cut wood, and musk.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

If you don't eat meat, he probably won't fwy. He also wouldn't want anyone who would try to change him or tell him what to do.

He'd get annoyed if you got mad at him for doing something that he warned you about at the beginning, whether it be killing or aligning with the 'bad guys' because he warned you, so you should've known better.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?):

Sabretooth sleeps more during the day than at night. He catnaps a lot too, he likes to find secluded places to sleep.

He might find a spot high in a tree to sleep too, like a leopard would do.

He absolutely purrs but will deny it until the day he dies.

Polin's theme - a musical Polinalysis

Alright...I am very rusty with this stuff (I studied music theory ohhh 15 years ago or so) but I couldn't resist delving deeper into the subject of this post. Anyone else with more expertise in this area, I'd love to know your thoughts!

So, we hear a lovely soaring orchestral theme in the background when Colin and Penelope kiss for the first time, yes? To remind ourselves, here's the theme in full.

The actual theme starts at about the 18s mark, but I included those initial 18 seconds because what's going on in the strings at that point helps orient us in the proper key. There's a resolution to a D-flat Major chord around the 5s mark as Colin's starting to lean in. Given that, and the rest of the notes in the theme and how they relate to each other, I'm assuming we're in the key of D-flat Major. (And I'll get into why it's meaningful to know this throughout the analysis.)

The theme we hear in this scene is made up of two main musical phrases. The first goes like this:

The second starts the same but takes a slightly different path at the end. It sounds like this:

What I think is interesting about both of these phrases is that we neither start nor end on the tonic (aka the first) note of a D-flat Major scale (which is D-flat). The phrases start on A-flat and end on E-flat. Why is this interesting?

Think of the tonic note of a scale as "home." If you start a musical phrase on the tonic note, that gives you a good sense of where you are harmonically right off the bat. The phrase will always take you away from that tonic note, but what creates tension and movement in the music is that ever-present desire to return home.

The phrases in Polin's theme neither start us at home nor return us there. In fact, the last part of the first phrase descends within a D-flat Major scale from A-flat to G-flat to E-flat and then hangs there. E-flat is one note in the scale above the tonic. Musically, we desperately want to resolve from E-flat to D-flat, but the phrase suspends us in that desire. The next line, instead of giving us a nice solid D-flat, drops us back to A-flat and starts the phrase over again.

I think this is a beautiful bit of musical storytelling. Just like the music dances around the tonic note without ever grounding us there, Colin and Penelope's relationship at this point is heading into uncertain territory. And just as the tension in the melodic line builds and never quite resolves, we are left at the end of the kiss scene with a dramatic transformation having occurred in Colin and Penelope's relationship and no clarity as to what's next. (Except that we would desperately love for them to keep kissing. 😉)

Then we have Colin's dream. And in the dream, the moment his and Penelope's lips meet, we hear that theme again. But hark! Something's different...

It's subtle, but this repetition of the theme is a half-step higher than the previous iteration. Instead of being in D-flat Major, we're in D Major. I think this is cool for two reasons.

First, it sets the dream scene apart from the real kiss scene in a psychological way—by giving it a slightly higher musical tonality, it has a slightly higher emotional tone. There's a little less uncertainty, a little more freedom.

Which brings me to the second cool thing, which is that, historically, D Major was regarded as the key of triumph and victory. Composers liked to set marches in D Major. The "Hallelujah" chorus from Handel's Messiah is in D Major.

And what could be more triumphant than marching into your crush's firelit garden, brazenly confessing your feelings, and having those feelings returned in a passionate kiss? You can even hear in this variation of the Polin theme that the tempo is a bit more expansive. It feels more like a confident stride with your head held high than the previous iteration, which is just a touch more frantic.

Then Colin wakes up. His world has been rocked. The next time he and Penelope see each other is in the willow scene, and just before they duck under the willow tree's cover, we hear a third variant of the Polin theme (thank you to @i-know-the-endss for pointing this out!!)...

Two things that I think are interesting about this return of the theme are 1) we're still in D Major, and 2) the end of this variation, unlike the previous variations, actually resolves down to the tonic of the key (which in this instance is a D)!

What does this mean? Personally, I think it's a fun little tease. We're hearing the tune the same way it appeared in Colin's dream... Will this first real-life meeting between Colin and Penelope since the dream play out the same way? The phrase grounds us on a D at the end rather than leaving us suspended on the note above with a desperate need to resolve that tension. Does that mean we'll see a resolution to the tension in Colin and Penelope's relationship?

And of course we do not, which is why it's a tease, but I love that the music builds the excitement at seeing Colin and Penelope interact for the first time since their kiss—for the first time since Colin's newfound emotional conflict—in this way. Like dangling a little carrot for us and then yanking it away.

Finally, later in that same episode, we hear the theme one more time at the first party Penelope attends since her self-flagellation in Whistledown.

This time, however, we're back in D-flat Major. Back to the reality of the first kiss, where things were uncertain and unsteady, instead of in the hopeful triumph of Colin's dream.

This is also the shortest iteration of the theme we hear. It abruptly ends partway through the first phrase. In this case, we are left dangling on an F, which is the third note of a D-flat Major scale. Because we are not yet "home" on the third, we still feel a lack of resolution here. However, unlike the very first iteration of this phrase, where we traveled down to the second note of the D-flat Major scale and were left with a desperate feeling of wanting to resolve just one more note down to the tonic, the third note of the scale lacks the same urgency and sense of direction. We are unresolved, but without knowing exactly where we want or need to go in order to achieve that resolution.

I think this is a great bit of musical storytelling, as well. At this point in Penelope's arc, she just wants to move on and find a suitor, and she still does not believe Colin could ever fill that role. Later in that party scene, she makes a connection with Lord Debling, and her objective for a husband is renewed. Colin, on the other hand, is starting to pine for Penelope something fierce, but he's still battling with himself about who he is and what he really wants. The outcome that will bring them both happiness, while obvious to us viewers, is not clear to either Colin or Penelope. Thus, a dangling F in a D-flat Major key without a clear path home.

A couple more notes (ba-dum-tss) about this theme... I speculate in the musical transcription at the top that the first occurrence of this theme is in 12/8 time. This is because the strings that are running underneath the main theme have a dance-y triplet-like quality to them which made me feel like each beat of the theme is actually a quick three-count. I bring this up because the first movement of Beethoven's Appassionata, which Francesca indicates is a particular favorite of hers in her conversation with Lord Petri in ep2, is also in 12/8 time. Not only that, but the second movement of the Appassionata is in D-flat Major, the same key I postulate we're in for the first occurrence of Polin's theme. Nothing profound here...I just think it's neat.

I never write headcanons really, but this is a great way to me to workshop information for my Janitor AI characters as well. Enjoy! Trigger Warnings: It's Feitan, is his own trigger warning. Mentions of blood, torture, etc...

A = Aftercare

At first, when Feitan just pays for sex, he doesn't bother with aftercare. In his mind, that's already been taken care of by the transaction. But when he meets you and realizes you have more needs than just physical, he begins to pay attention to your well-being. He starts by checking your body for any injuries or cuts and making sure they are taken care of. If necessary, he will bandage them up. Afterwards, he'll carry you to the bath and make sure all traces of blood and fluids are washed away. For less intense encounters without any kink involved, it takes a while but he eventually learns to enjoy having his arm around you and nuzzling into the back of your neck. He's not one for talking much, but this is his way of showing that he's there for you if you need anything.

Feitan doesn't spend much time admiring his own appearance, so it's hard to say if he has a favorite body part. But on you, he loves your legs. From your thighs to your calves to the curve of your ass, he will mark every inch of them with his teeth or knife. Most likely both... definitely both.

Feitan may have a fit body, but that doesn't necessarily mean he eats great. Don't expect the taste to be great. It's quite watery, but there will definitely be a decent amount. Cat!Graves and Dog!Shadow Company Thoughts🐈🐕‍🦺🐕🦮🐩

Cat hybrid!Graves who purrs softly as he rubs against his Dog Hybrid!Shadows after a successful mission, both congratulating his boys, but also making sure that his property/territory is properly marked and scented. He’d rather d!e than let another hybrid try and claim HIS dog pack. Back off Shepherd >:(

Cat!Graves who stays up super late doing work until the early hours of the morning. He gets a little bit louder when he’s working in the late hours and especially when he’s tired. This causes some of the shadows to wake up and they don’t like that. So when woken up, they will often drag Graves back with them to a dog pile, where they will keep him till he falls asleep or the morning arrives

Cat!Graves who’s more touchy and affectionate than before, rubbing against people he likes and is comfortable around, hugs more often and takes an extended hand as invite for a hug, stands closer to others while swinging his tail slowly. 

Cat!Graves who picks up habits from his dog pack. Like perking up at the smell of peanut butter, having an unreasonable hatred for squirrels, yowling whenever a howl is started, or hissing at people behind closed doors and windows, but being sweet as sugar when the door or window is opened

Dog!Shadow Company who discovers that laser pointers work on Graves in the middle of a meeting. They were using the pointer to discuss a mission, when Graves suddenly walks over to the screen with his tail lashing and puts his hands over the dot. After a few moments of silence the Shadow using the pointer moves it to the side to put it away, but Graves follows the pointer, batting at the wall. The room promptly erupts into chaos, the mission forgotten. Shadows are trying to grab the pointer, and Graves is chasing the pointer around the room, occasionally wiggling before he pounces on the dot. Papers are flying, Shadows are barking and yelling, some are trying to grab Graves, others are trying to get the pointer to mess with Graves, and Graves is bouncing off the walls trying to catch the dot which is moving erratically around the room. The chaos eventually stops when the pointer gets dropped during the confusion and breaks. :( 

Cat!Graves who has to make sure that no other shadows are in the room besides the ones he training with before he starts :( Dog!Shadow Company cannot be trusted as a pack around Cat!Graves when he’s training. Their prey drive kicks in when they see such a small pretty kitty like Graves fighting and tangling against larger dogs :(( Of course, Graves can handle 1-2 Shadows who are exponentially larger than him, but an entire pack? The poor commander is instantly covered and surrounded by large hybrids who can’t help but snap their maws at his body :( And all the while all poor Phillip can do is whimper and whine while try and wriggle out of the pile hybrids :((

Cat!Grave who has a bad habit of pushing tall things off tables. Specifically if its on his 

Cat!Graves who HATES being cornered.(physically) He needs space to move around and feel free and he can’t do that in a corner. He will hiss and snarl if someone he doesn’t know corners or traps him. The only people he lets into his space is his dog pack, and most shadows treat that honor with all the respect that they can give. If someone starts to toe the line too much, and Graves starts to get uncomfortable, all it takes is a few air bites in the perpetrator’s direction for them to back off. No one makes their boss uncomfortable on their watch. Of course Graves can take care of himself, but he takes a little longer to voice his concerns, especially after being shut down a lot by shepherd on missions

Cat!Graves who left the Marines because the bigger, ‘badder’ species thought it was funny to grab his ears and tail and pull as hard as they could just to get him yowling and hissing. They would berate him afterwards, scolding him for being so loud and being weak. His superiors didn’t even care. They thought a species as lazy as a cat didn’t belong in the military so, they let it happen and even went out of their way to taunt him theirselves. All of this built up until Graves had had enough, and left the marines to start Shadow company. He overworks himself sometimes just to prove that he isn’t lazy, and he does belong in the military, even though he isn’t around them now

Dog!Shadow Company who has a group chat dedicated to Cat!Graves moments, whether it be a video of him quickly scaling a wall, a photo of him eating those cat food pouches, or a video taken from behind a corner, showing a Shadow petting Graves between the ears and him purring happily. Every new shadow is introduced to it, sworn in secrecy. Graves does not know about it, and never will know about it as long as the Shadows have any say in it. 

Dog!Shadow Company who secretly knows where Cat!Graves is at all times, they have trackers hidden pretty much in all of his gear. It’s not for nefarious purposes or possessiveness (well, maybe a little bit of possessiveness for certain shadows) but instead for emergencies. Bring the leader of a well known PMC makes him a target for organizations trying to make quick money, or to get revenge for missions he’s overseen. So they keep trackers hidden on him in case someone’s looking to take him hostage. (This one has nothing to do with dog or cat hybrids but it feels important)

Dog!Shadow Company who gets EXTREMELY overprotective of Cat!Graves whenever he’s had a rough day. They’re already pretty protective of him in general, but someone outside the company is causing their beloved Commander to feel uncomfortable?? OhhhhhhohoHO! Grab your guns and your tracking skills, cause that bastard is going to DIE tonight if Graves doesn’t find out in time. They feel like they owe it to him to protect him, as he gave them all a place to call home and people to call family. He’s pretty much their father figure at this point, and as such they will protect him at ALL costs

Dog!Shadow Company who is easy for Cat!Graves to distract, either it be with bones or treats, if the pack needs a pick me up after a mission gone wrong, Graves is there to help cheer them up/distract them

no its very relevant! Really too early to tell I think, at the absolute minimum I think this conflict could last several weeks, wouldn't be surprised if longer though. Either way the entire regional politic has already been changed forever, and I'm sure there will be defacto territorial change one way or another

Main factors/possibilities (rougly sorted in terms of my perceived importance/likeliness) imo:

A) level of coordination that Al-Qassam & other militants taking part have (idk what comms they'd really have available at this point, particularly with the blackout) as well as how robust logistical supply chains are for deliveries of weapons, personnel, and ammo, but to start out w 5,000 missiles in 20 minutes (though israel claims 2,500) definitely indicates a major degree of planning & coordination, probably months in advance if not more - so many contingencies were probably accounted for

B) how much Hezb'ullah enters the offensive, even pinning down a couple battalions around Sheba farm or the broader Golan heights can be a pretty pivotal, but if they actually are able to take territory that changes things significantly

B-2) how much non-muslim groups in lebanon accept hezb'ullah joining the offensive - israel can escalate here & potentially fracture the offensive by staging a ground invasion/aerial attack into Lebanon, as long as non-muslim groups read that as "because hezb'ullah instigated it" instead of as israeli aggression on them. I have no read on lebanese public opinion here so idk.

C) Whether the Syrian SAF steps up strikes against israeli occupational military targets in the Golan Heights in the next couple days

C-2) amount of explicit coordination between Hezb'ullah & SAF

D) how the situation develops in the West Bank - expect a lot of retributional violence by Israeli civilians here.

D-2) Abbas & his govt have already taken quite a strong stance where they dont quite endorse hamas' operation, but put blame squarely on Israel - if West Bank escalates decisively they might take a much stronger stance.

E) How many israeli political prisoners Hamas has taken (israel has admitted to 130, hamas says "more than dozens") - PIJ also claims 30, how important they are, & how many of their own civilians Israel is willing to potentially kill in order to achieve broader military objectives.

E-2) If Israel arent willing to do that, then that also means a lot of their vaunted air force is largely useless here & combat will largely take the form of urban street battles, which tend to favor irregular insurgent combatants (esp when the regular army is used to unquestioned aerial supremacy)

E-3) what happens during the land invasion of Gaza (said to happen in about 24 hours, and something that would be surprising if wasnt expected by hamas), which is likely prompted by the large number of detained political prisoners. If this ends without something that can be spun as a clear victory for IDF, then this will be a major demotivating factor against their international perceived strength & massively increase morale among palestinian militants & civilians

F) If gazans are able to make a land bridge to the West Bank, then things are going to escalate in a significant way. Sderot is right now the frontline here, about 20 mile straight shot

G) how much more of the barrier around the Gaza strip is able to be destroyed, particularly at checkpoints

I) if the Saudis officially announce a pause in normalization talks

I-2) if other factions in the House of Saud take advantage of the mass-unpopularity of normalization with israel among saudi citizen (ie not immigrant labor) population (~2% support support among saudi youth according to Arab Youth Survey 2023 https://arabyouthsurvey.com/wp-content/uploads/whitepaper/AYS-2023-WP_123_English.pdf - seems like a fair assumption this isn't limited to the young). Even absolute monarchies have limits in terms of unpopular choices.

H) how much of a united front palestinian refugees (across the region but in Egypt & Jordan in particular) are able to mount & what political ends they're able to force pressure on - Sisi has rhetorically genuflected to Israel being the one to provoke escalation while also condemning both sides, but Jordan's Abd'allah has pretty much stuck to both sides so far

H-2) If the youth survey is a good proxy, Jordan would likely be the one where the governing regime would have most difficulty avoiding taking a stand against israel (~6% in favor of normalization)

J) if Israel officially declares military operations against Iran, then that's going to be a major escalation path.

J-2) More likely imo will just step up operations particularly in Iraq against shi'a militants, not sure they'd really want to escalate in Syria at this exact moment

K) how long the Netanyahu-centered Unity Govt takes to form, especially how much Gantz tries to push himself into the center

L) How much the US/european politicians publicly supports israel rhetorically & with guns without public pushback (that's where posting can actually help, particularly politicians). Right now the political class has basically all fallen in line in support of Israel, so normalizing discourse in support of palestine does do something, particularly if it has quantifiable achievement like BDS (particularly S)

M) Now is also when israeli civilians protesting against the corruption of their government would make the most difference. Strangely the recurring protests have been canceled. lol.

Z (wildcard)) Ansar Allah (houthis) or other non-coalition yemeni militant groups start an offensive against the Israeli-UAE occupation of Socotra. UAE alone is still militarily powerful and islands have obvious defensive advantages but scrambling to coordinate a rebuff of Israeli military positions all that way away would definitely start to strain logistics
