Heads up! There is going to be a very long and detailed post about making sausages dropping in a few hours.

okay so. jack! jack. what a collection of guys. the overlap between jack and the beanstalk and jack the giant killer, though. that sure is something! sometimes king arthur is there, which always takes me by surprise.

this. specifically. is an idea I've been kicking around. jack and the beanstalk is not a story I've ever enjoyed, as a kid it was probably my least favorite to read. as an adult, I was INTENSELY fascinated by reading j.g. ballard's the drowned giant. I think about it frequently, and somewhere during a re read of it, I ended up revisiting jack.

combining different versions of jack into one character is not a new concept, but it IS a fun one! the version I've been assembling together plays less with the fun elements of a jack story (and adjacent folklore stories), and focuses more on the potential for tragic elements with the addition of the usual grim and jagged narrative edges that I personally enjoy.

jack with the backstory of the devil and the three golden hairs, only jack doesn't find love, he's TIRED, all he wants to do is go home, but there isn't a home to go back to. what is the point of being born lucky if this is what it gets you? jack the giant killer, only he doesn't want to kill giants, jack who saw a body of a giant when he was a small child and cannot bring himself to do as a king commands. jack, who climbs up the beanstalk and stops halfway to look down. etc.

to go back to the drowned giant real quick, both to set the tone about jack seeing the body of a giant as a youth, and also because I've been haunted and obsessed with this excerpt of it ever since I read it:

I realize most of my writings that have most solidified how I currently write their dynamics are still not out yet. I have so much to get out and the most important parts of them I realize still are not public, so people can’t see the characters how I currently headcanon them.

I haven’t even posted anything yet that sets up the AU I’ve developed around them. It’s called Savepoint AU and it’s been in my head since 2023, regarding the tags I left in this post.

It’s very important to the narrative leading up to everything in I Won’t leave You Behind, but I feel I cannot post about it until I get Rain Check and its accompanying sequel Entropy Syndrome out. One group of people knows a little about it and has seen art related to it but that’s it haha.

ANYWAYS these are where Ingo and Akari’s dynamics really shine and I am hoping I can pull it together enough soon to be satisfied with the smaller details and get it out. I don’t want to rush it or I know it’ll bug me forever, as I feel that way about some stuff in HFBE haha. (DW I will fix these eventually)

Kind of wish the Autobots had a better reason for needing to destroy Megatron’s Matrix of Leadership at the end there

Because like, the Autobots have for the most part been the aggressors in this portion of the story. Like they keep crossing the border, which was one of Megatron’s express rules

And I mean okay sure, Astrotrain did shoot Jetfire with the intention of basically death, and kidnapped him and Ratchet afterwards to make sure it worked right this time. And Megatron did point Wildwheel in the direction of the Autobots after trashing his side, and also made sure the shield only worked for his side of the planet, he clearly doesn’t care about the Autobots

And I mean, I get not trusting Megatron to not cause problems or restart the war. But also, he saved your asses from the Quintessons, and his universe hopping adventure seems to have at least somewhat made him better? Again, he came back to save you guys when he had no reason to, that you know of. And he actually agreed to peace for once, to the point where rebuilding cities has actually been happening

Like the Decepticons haven’t really done anything other than that Astrotrain incident and I guess Wildwheel. And that unspace ray wasn’t even for them, but I guess they didn’t know that at the time. But again, they weren’t the ones hopping the border constantly

And it’d be one thing if these were off the books incidents of Autobots breaking protocol. But no, not only is Optimus well aware of these incidents, he’s actively encouraging them

Optimus, buddy. Megatron’s actually agreed to peace this time and you keep breaking one of his main terms. He hasn’t even done anything until the Astrotrain incident, which only happened because Jetfire was in Decepticon territory. You didn’t even have a legitimate reason to distrust him this time

And going back to the Matrix thing because I got carried away there, it was very convenient for Optimus that the eviler Megatron showed up and stole back his Matrix, needing it to be destroyed to save them all. Because of that hadn’t happened, he’d be in a lot of trouble for storming the other’s territory, not just with his forces but with himself, and demanding his Matrix must be destroyed for relatively weak reasons. Like if it had been the other way around, there’s no doubt war would be declared again

I get they needed to destroy the Matrix to get Windblade back, and they want their friend back, but bigger picture here. Megatron needs the Matrix to try and defeat a far more dangerous and malicious version of himself, which the Autobots may not know, but he has not given them a good reason to suspect he’s misusing his Matrix and that it needs to be destroyed. He’s only used it to help them. And yeah Windblade, but she is only one bot and they aren’t in dire need of a Cityspeaker at the moment. Like there’s no way Megatron would have agreed to this, even without the other Megatron thing

If they had some other reason to destroy Megatron’s Matrix, like it being a malicious Matrix from another universe that would have harmed Cybertron if it stayed, or if it being from another universe and being in this one for too long was making it unstable, thus potentially harming Megatron or worse if he continued to have it, then maybe it could be more justified

But like, as is, the Autobots were just being the aggressors here

Fun note of the specific pronoun situation with the translation errors between Wasp and Bugnish: under normal circumstances, Jayde would get automatically assigned he/him in Bugnish, since she uses the standard "non-queen social bug" pronouns that roughly 95% of the Wasp Hive do, which get translated to drone pronouns in Bugnish due to a roughly century-old miscommunication. She gets assigned worker pronouns in Bugnish specifically because those are what Kabbu defaults to with social bugs, and other people picked it up from him during introductions. This Will Be A Point Of Confusion For Her Whenever She Asks About It.
