on striped shirts and the softness of common cultural signs in utdr

one of my favorite details in undertale (and i can only assume that by extension deltarune but that's less clear) is how kids - seemingly universally, regardless of if they're human or monster - wear striped shirts.

there's something soft about making sure others know this person is still just a child, that they might need help from others or protection. it's nice how monster kid assumes frisk is a child too because of their shirt and how they're not even wrong, it's not played for a joke. how sans calls them "kid" or "buddy", how undyne addresses them "brat" or "punk", because they know they're young.

there's something about this that screams of an "it takes a village" mentality that somehow transcended the human-monster war that makes me feel all fuzzy. it speaks of care, of making sure others realize the age, and thus fragility, of who they're speaking to. someone had to give a striped shirt to every child who owns it. someone cared enough to make sure others cared too. it just think that's nice.

The way some of yall mischaracterize Ratio as being stoic in chill when in reality he is 24/7 resisting the urge to rip everyone around him a new one is crazy to me like. He cares so much, so much. It’s unhealthy, he loses the idgaf war every time because Ratio is the least nonchalant person ever like

He was this close to breaking character and throttling Sunday like you cannot tell me he wasn’t planning a murder in this scene. Ratio straight up calls Sunday a crazy bitch but everyone brushed it aside 😭

Genuinely, Aventurine is way better at concealing his true feelings that Ratio. Ratio may be acting for the sake of the plan but the way he truly feels about anything he’s doing always seeps through, it’s why he apologizes to Aventurine in 2.0 in their staged argument scene. It’s why he is as mean to Sunday as he can be. It’s why him pretending that he “hates” Aventurine makes him act so silly. Ratio can’t fully commit to the bit, he can’t force himself to not care or to be someone he isn’t, because fundamentally Ratio CARES and that is something he is incapable of hiding, alabaster bust or not.

The problem is that him expressing his care is often done in a rude and/or blunt manner which people tend to interpret as stoicism or apathy when it’s anything but. Ratio’s vial that he gives to Aventurine is short, sweet and gets straight to the point, because that’s the easiest way for Ratio to express his emotions, even if it’s often detrimental for him and anyone else around him. However Aventurine understands him quite well, and knows that although brief, Ratio telling him to ��stay alive, survive this and keep on living” is how he truly feels towards Aventurine, and that’s enough to keep him going.

Underneath Ratios carefully crafted marble facade is a man who cares so much and is so bad at expressing it and I wish the community in general, especially Aventio shippers would acknowledge that more. Ratios true moments of sincerity are brief, but they are anything but stoic. Let the man be soft, it’s in character.

😭😭😭 Finklestein was asking the Decoration Crew MalleusIdiaLeonaVil how they spend their Halloween in their world, and Malleus began explaining that they decorate their own dorms and compete. He claimed that Diasomnia had the spookiest theming last year and the others began complaining because they're just dark and gloomy LMAO.

Idia says they're the best because they had the latest technology, but Leona said the surveys had complaints that Ignihyde students talked waaaay too fast and no one understood what they said. If anything, Savanaclaw's was the best and was popular, but Vil said literally everyone was scared of Savanaclaw and no one dared to go because of the muscle men scaring everyone away. Vil said they were the most beautiful instead, but Idia pffffted and said when it comes to "not understanding anything" contest it's gotta be Pomefiore because of how haughty and "abstract "poetic" they are.

Finklestein then explains that they also get trophies for working hard during Halloween, so the boys need to stop fighting and start working.

Leona: "Well, I'm sure it won't be Mr. Gloomy Lizard over here at least."

Malleus: "Is that so? I believe I'd fair a lot better than some churlish cur."

Finklestein: "Ah. I wonder who'll win the much-coveted 'Scared Stiff Award' this year? Or the 'Clingy as a Leech Award'?"

Idia: "Scared Stiff Award..? What last century boomer even came up with that lame name?!"

Vil: "Clingy as a Leech? There's a category for leeches?"

Leona: "... Malleus, you can have the trophies." 😭😭😭😭

The entire "Danganronpa Kirigiri" series is now available in English.

I don't do Reddit much, which is probably why I only just learned yesterday (courtesy of @vampietears) that Danganronpa Kirigiri Volumes 1-7 have all been translated into English and made available as PDF versions in the past year.

I searched Tumblr for any mention of this and found absolutely none, so I feel confident that I'm far from the only person who didn't know these were available.

CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULES, DR fans! It's definitely going to take me some time to work through the whole series, but I hope (eh? eeeehhh?) to enjoy the process.

I can't begin to describe to you all how AMAZING this feels!

I've spent the past 2 years on what felt like a wild goose chase, desperately searching for this one comic that I wasn't even sure existed.

This all started with me finding a photo on Tumblr of this comic and spiraling into this deep dive. First I didn't know if this was even real, then I found out that this comic series had ceased printing, then I couldn't be sure which book it was actually in.

There is literally almost no information out there about the fourth volume of this anthology series. I've said this before and I'll say it again, volumes 1 and 2 both have full translations that you can download off of other websites, and while 3 doesn't seem to have that, there are a lot of separately translated comics floating around out there, namely on Pinterest.

The 4th volume had NOTHING! No matter how hard I searched or how many links I clicked, no one has really said ANYTHING about this book, which was why this specific comic was so hard for me to find.

But I have all of the books now, so I definitely want to do this again for all of them so that people have easy access to these translations. I'll start with book 4 though haha.

Also, I'm not sure who it was, but HUUUUGE thanks to the kind stranger on Ebay who was willing to sent me the whole series!! I literally don't know where I would be right now if these books weren't with me, so thank you <3

Also, thank you to all of my Japanese teachers that I've had throughout the years. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have been able to understand the comic, haha! One even helped me out in the early stages of this process, so extra thanks to him <3

I feel really passionate about accessible media. I think that everyone should be able to read and find whatever they want. That's part of the reason that I've endeavored on this project. I want everyone to be able to seek out and find these comics if they really want to. And, of course, I want everyone to be able to understand them, too.

I've always seen people shipping the master and the doctor. I've heard people talking about how gay they are. If so, then WHY am I so suprised when the doctor's like "all we've got is each other" and then the master's "are you asking me out on a date?"

What's more, in polish translation the doctor says: "If you want, I will conquer other galaxies with you" and I think it's beautiful.

the odysseus-nausicaa interactions are so special to me. she's my brave little princess and he's so delicate with her. the fuckin, tree at delos metaphor. what is this man thinking. i hope nausicaa is happy!!!

this quote is from book 8 but i'm including it anyway:

3. athena meets odysseus in ithaca, book 13.

athena obscures from odysseus that he's back in his own land, so that she can be the one to tell him, and then she lets him lie about his identity for a full page before she reveals herself.

this is also the conversation where she says "this is why i like you; anyone normal would have gone home to see his wife and children by now!" they are Cronies. she Can Make Him Worse.

2. odysseus strings the bow, book 21.

many parts of the bow contest i love, including penelope retrieving the bow from the storeroom and pausing to weep over it, and telling the suitors she will always remember this house, even in her dreams. but the moment he does the deed after everyone else has failed... hghkgh the narrative tension. Complete With Sound Effects.
